Education is very important to me and my family. On a daily basis we follow a schedule full of enriching activities. These activities include: Arts and crafts, story time, circle time, puzzles, centers, music, math, dramatic play, discovery, fine and gross motor skills, writing, and language. Nutrition is also very important to us, so we serve healthy meals and snacks.

Hi, my name is Wendy Mundt and I am the Center Director of the Sunshine House in Woodstock Georgia. I have over thirty-two years of experience in the education field as a former elementary and middle school teacher, along with childcare management. I have two master’s degrees and numerous bachelor’s degrees. I am slowly working towards a Ph.D. in African History. In my spare time I love to read, do scrap booking projects and travel with my family to our lake house or weekend sight seeing trips. I am proud to be a part of the Sunshine House family and fulfill their mission to provide every child with high-quality care and education.

Toddler Programs (1–2 Years)

Everything in our toddler classroom is designed for little explorers. That’s
because a lot is going on at this age. When your child is wandering all over the
place, that means they’re learning and discovering new things every day. We’ll
help them explore their interests (and find new ones!) as they play and learn.

Discovery Preschool Programs (2–3 Years)

This age is filled with so much wonder and curiosity. That’s why we offer a ton
of books and toys and bring artwork down to kids eye level. Children in
discovery preschool also begin to learn how we all work together in a
classroom. Simple math and science, pretend play, and group play help them
get used to a more structured school setting.

Preschool Programs (3–4 Years)

This age is all about expression, when kids really start to form their own ideas
about what they want to play and how they want to create. Every day in our
preschool classroom, your child will explore science experiments, create
artwork, and play pretend—all the skills needed for their big next step:
kindergarten!

Prekindergarten Programs (4–5 Years)

When you walk into one of our pre-K classrooms, you’ll see artwork and
writing displayed around the room. Labels are everywhere to help kids connect
letters with words. You’ll also see pictures on the walls that reflect the families
in our community. Your child will also deepen their knowledge in language,
math, science, Spanish, and social skills.

Before- and After-School Programs (5–12 Years)

Music Explorers™ (2 – 4 Years)

KinderCare families are already giving a standing ovation to our newest Learning
Adventures program: Music Explorers! Kids will learn to sing, move, listen, play
instruments, and even create their own tunes. Our original curriculum blends math,
science, social studies, literacy, and mindfulness (think yoga!) for a uniquely KinderCare

Phonics Adventures® (2 – 4 Years)

Learning how to read is a whole lot of fun at KinderCare! We help kids grow to love

Do you support alternative diets?

We strive to be as inclusive as possible. To that point, we provide a vegetarian option at mealtime, take care to not serve common allergens and can adapt menus based on your child’s food sensitivities. If your child has additional needs, we’ll work with you to figure out a plan.

Are meals included in tuition? Can I choose to send my child with lunch?

We provide nutritious meals and snacks developed by a registered dietician to meet the needs of rapidly growing bodies and minds. If your child has special dietary requirements and you would prefer to bring in their lunch, please make arrangements with the center director.

Does my child need to be potty-trained?

Every child begins toilet learning at a different age. Until your child shows an interest in toilet learning, we’ll provide diaper changes on an as-needed basis. When your child shows an interest, we’ll discuss how to work together to encourage toilet learning.

Geography

Canton is located near the center of Cherokee County at 34°13′38″N. 84°29′41″W / 34.22722°N 84.49472°W / 34.22722; -84.49472 (34.227307, −84.494727). ^[7] City is located north of Holly Springs and south of Ball Land. Interstate 575 runs through the east side of the city, accessed via exits 14 through 20. Canton is 40 miles (64 km) north of downtown. Atlanta via I-575 and I-75.

History

Located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge, the site where Canton was to be founded lay at the heart of the original Cherokee Nation. During the first 100 years of Georgia’s history, Northwestern Georgia was generally considered “Indian country” and was bypassed by settlers going west. Georgia made a treaty with the federal government in 1802 shortly after the Revolutionary War to give up its western territory (it claimed the Pacific Ocean as its western boundary) in exchange for removing all Indians within its borders. Although other tribes were expelled, the Cherokee remained. Because it was the center of the Cherokee people, the state and nation did not want to disturb them. But after the Gold Rush in Georgia in 1829In the same year, European-American settlers ignored the problems of the Indians and began to move to the area north of Carrollton and west of the Chattahoochee River and named it the Cherokee.

Many of the Cherokee Nation moved west in 1829, but most remained there until removed by federal troops sent to the area in the summer of 1838. The remaining Cherokee were rounded up and held in the forts until the removal was completed. Present-day Cherokee County had the largest and southernmost of these forts, Fort Buffington, which was 6 miles (10 km) east of Canton. Nothing today indicates its wooden structure, but the area is marked by a large piece of green Cherokee marble quarried near Holly Springs. By the fall of 1838, Federal troops had completed their mission, and the Cherokee at Fort Buffington were sent on a campaign to join other groups on the infamous “Trail of Tears,” a long march through worsening winter weather to Indian Territory west of the Mississippi River.

New settlers chose the site for the permanent county seat and courthouse in 1833, naming it “Etowah”. The name was changed to “Cherokee Courthouse” in 1833. In 1834, it was changed to “Canton” (pronounced cant’n), after the Chinese city of Guangzhou, which was then known in English as Canton (pronounced cant’an). The name was chosen because a group of citizens dreamed of turning the city of Georgia into the center of the silk industry, which at that time was concentrated in China. Although Canton never became a significant center for silk production, it did become a successful manufacturing community.

During the American Civil War, Canton, with a population of approximately 200, was burned down between November 1–5, 1864 by the Union Army under Major General William T. Sherman. Canton was destroyed by a detachment of foragers from the 5th Ohio Cavalry under the command of Major Thomas T. Heath. At the time, the 5th Ohio Cavalry was headquartered in Cartersville. ^[11] A written order for destruction was issued on 30 October 1864 by Brig. General John E. Smith. ^[12] Union troops were ordered to burn the city due to attacks by Confederate guerrillas coming from Canton against the Western and Atlantic Railroad near the city of Cassville. The railroad was a vital supply line for the Union Army from the captured city of Chattanooga, Tennessee to the recently captured Atlanta. Union troops identified the Cantonese home of Governor Joseph E. Brown for destruction. The same Union party destroyed Cassville, the capital of neighboring Bartow County, on November 5, 1864, as it was also a guerrilla base. Cassville was never rebuilt, but Canton survived and prospered as it was the seat of the county. ^[13]

Over the years, Canton has evolved from a troubled area into a thriving manufacturing city known worldwide for its “denim canton”. The original 1831 county now includes 24 counties. The city of Canton remains the county seat.

In 1954, the poultry division of Central Soya Corporation established a plant in the area that is now Pilgrim’s Pride. Canton Cotton Mills, which produced the famous “Canton Denim”, closed at 1981 year. Since then, Canton has grown as suburban Atlanta has expanded northward, and is currently experiencing a period of greatest population growth that almost tripled between 2000 and 2010.

City Government

City Council and Mayor

The City Manager is the administrative officer of the City of Canton and is responsible for overseeing the daily activities of all city departments. The city manager is appointed by the city government manager and the City Government Council, the city’s governing body.

The City Clerk acts as Council Secretary and is responsible for the minutes and records of all meetings. The City Clerk is responsible for keeping all of the city’s legal documents.

Infrastructure

Many projects are being implemented in the city, including new construction, reconstruction and revitalization. Canton has received millions of dollars in grants to improve parks and sidewalks in the city. City public buses have established routes and transport thousands of passengers throughout the city from residential areas to downtown, shopping areas, medical district and workplaces.

The historic Cantonese Theater on Main Street hosts plays and other special entertainment events throughout the year that bring life to the downtown business district. Downtown streets have recently been improved with the removal of parking spaces as part of the Streetscapes program, resulting in paved sidewalks with brick, lampposts, lush landscaping, and improved intersections.

In May 2004, the city held a ribbon-cutting ceremony in front of Heritage Park, the first phase of construction of the Etowah River Greenway. The park covers about 30 acres (120,000 m2). ²) and has walking and cycling paths and a natural amphitheatre. During the summer, the Heritage Park hosted concerts and films free of charge for the residents of the city.

City, in partnership with Metro Atlanta YMCA, built an $8 million community center on Valeska Street adjacent to Heritage Park. The now completed community center includes an indoor pool, gym, health center, aerobics studio, day care centers, and the Cherokee Sports Hall of Fame. Although the facility’s construction was approved by a local referendum sanctioning a “free” community center, the city chose to operate it through the YMCA. People must become members, thereby paying a commission for use.

The second phase of the Itowa River Greenway north of Heritage Park consists of softball, baseball, tennis and football fields. This stage includes about 60 acres (240,000 m2). ² ) property.

Bluffs Parkway opened in June 2004 along Riverstone Boulevard. Construction and ownership of the Hickory Log Creek Raw Water Reservoir will be split between the Cobb County/Marietta Water Authority and the City of Canton at 75% and 25% respectively; it was completed in December 2007. This water source will provide 44 million US gallons (170,000 m ³) of water per day and will border a 15 to 25 acre (6.1 to 10.1 ha) park area with a picnic area and other common areas .

In 2009, the newly refurbished Canton Market opened in Canton. It has Super Target as well as Kohl, Lowe’s, Best Buy, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Starbucks and more. Due to rapid population growth, restaurants and shopping malls have experienced an upswing.

Cherokee County School District

B The Cherokee County School District serves grades from preschool through grade twelve, including 23 elementary schools, seven middle schools, and six high schools. ^[14] As of 2010, there were 1,766 full-time teachers and over 28,434 students in the district. ^[15] Schools in the Cheroki district include:

Interstate 575 passes through Cobb and Cherokee counties, passes through eastern Canton (roughly north to south) and ends about 10 miles north of the city. Georgia State Route 20 runs east–west right through the city just south of the Etowah River. Georgia State Route 140 also runs near downtown from the northwest to the southeast.

- Joseph E. Brown, principal, attorney and politician, governor of Georgia 1857-1865 and US senator. From 1844 he lived in Canton, where he became devoted to public education. After the Civil War, he made a great fortune in the railroads and in the mining industry. Brown is the only person to have ever been elected governor of Georgia four times. ^[16]

- Mark Anthony Cooper, entrepreneur, founded Cooper Ironworks in Etowah in 1847. ^[18]
