Hundreds of truckers and other motorists who staged continuous protests on highways around Washington, D.
C. headed for the nation’s capital on Monday, slowing down already busy traffic in protest of COVID-19 mandates and beyond.
The Washington, DC Metropolitan Police Department closed a number of streets and highway exits to prevent protesters from entering the city.
Alert DC circulated “Due to ongoing demonstrations on I-395, I-695 and I-295, motorists should expect significant traffic delays to reach their destination” .
“E If possible, you should postpone travel on these routes or use alternative transportation such as the subway,” the city said. – The City Police Department closed a number of streets and highway exits to ensure the safe movement of traffic in the area. These sliding road closures occur in real time as needed and will be canceled as soon as they are no longer needed.”
In a meeting with Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, last week, truckers said they would not leave until their demands were met. They are protesting the federal vaccination mandate.
A group known as People’s Convoy has been in Hagerstown since March 4th.
Previously minimal traffic impact
7News spoke to several supporters who gathered along the bridges to support the group last week as they entered the Beltway.
“I am a patriot. I have always been. I am very outraged by what is being done to the country in terms of COVID, said Lyn Bradley from Bethesda. “I think the truckers dared to do what they did. It was a long trip for them. And I’m very proud of them.”
“I feel that government overreach has reached its peak. And the voice of the people must be heard,” said Cindy Hurley of the Potomac.
Why are truckers protesting?
Hundreds of trucks, many in motorcades, and more than 1,000 truckers and their supporters gathered at Hagerstown’s Speedway stadium and parking lot. Judging by the signs they displayed on their pickup trucks and other vehicles, the message was: Trump is good, Biden is bad, and their protest is “freedom.
”
They started with freedom from masks, but since most states have abandoned mandates, it is about ending the government’s ability to invoke “emergency powers,” writes katu.
Maureen Steele, spokesperson for the People’s Convoy, said of the government’s response to emergency powers: “The cure has been worse than the disease, suicide rates have risen, divorce rates have risen.”
In an interview with 7News, Steele said they never said they were going to Washington.
“If we change our mind, we’ll let you know,” Steele said. “Not at the moment, we are not going to.”
Washington officials say they are prepared for the last month. They spoke with colleagues across the country and locally in Maryland and Virginia about what to expect.
Agencies exchanged information on truck routes, as well as other data, to obtain information on the situation.
According to Rodriguez, motorcades move quickly through populated areas and are generally non-violent.
If a large number of trucks try to disrupt traffic or endanger public safety or health, Rodriguez said DC law enforcement will maintain “tactical flexibility.”
