Kindergarten as a center of gravity :: From the first person :: Articles

Moscow is implementing a large-scale program for the construction of modern social infrastructure facilities. Its results are already visible today: in a number of metropolitan areas, kindergartens and schools have appeared, whose appearance is far from “typical”. Olga Bumagina, chief architect and general director of the PPF PROEKT-REALIZATSIYA workshop, is convinced that social facilities should not be an appendage to residential development, but may well become centers of attraction in residential areas.

At the international festival “Architecture”, which will be held from 18 to 20 December in the capital’s Gostiny Dvor, LLC PPF “PROEKT-REALIZATSIYA” plans to show its completed and under construction projects of schools and kindergartens of a new formation. Among them: preschool educational institution in Kurkino, which won the competition “The best implemented project of 2013 in the field of investment and construction.”

Exemplary objects

Olga Bumagina We started designing educational objects in 2009year. We set ourselves the task of changing the attitude of the Department of Education of the capital and the building community towards the type of public buildings – schools and kindergartens. We believe that these objects are not additions to housing, but should be considered as a public building, which is either the center of residential development or a link between quarters.

If we now consider the length of the distance traveled – 5 objects have been built and put into operation, 10 more are at different stages of construction – I can say with confidence that we have succeeded.

If earlier we could not pass the Architectural Council because the buildings turned out to be too bright, now the attitude is different. Tours are taken to our gardens to show how to design a social program in an existing residential area.

It is no coincidence that the kindergarten in Kurkino on Yurovskaya street, microdistrict 2B, was recognized as the best completed project of the capital in 2013 and nominated by Moscow for the competition of the Ministry of Construction as the best implemented social facility.

We built a pre-school department at school No. 481 in the already existing building on Nizhegorodskaya street, 75. After the garden in Kurkino, this is our second facility put into operation. Initially, it was a block of primary classes, but, as it turned out, the school needed a preschool department more. As a result, when the monolith had already been cast, the object was redesigned. Occupancy increased from 220 to 300 seats. The garden turned out not as bright as the others, because in the neighborhood there is a pink and white old school and brick houses from different periods of construction. We only slightly pushed forward the second and third floors. However, I think this is our most pure architectural project.

Among the completed projects is a kindergarten for 250 children on Svobody Street, vl. 63, which we dedicated to my favorite surrealist Man Ray. The facades here are hinged from fiber cement boards for cutting, on a steel frame. We first used this technology in Kurkino. As a result, a mosaic effect is created, the image is not “painted” on the facade – it is its structural part.

In general, we are interested in designing educational facilities and dedicating facades to famous architects and artists. By this you create an environment for the development of the child, his creative abilities, imagination.

What we draw on the facades or inside the building will be deposited in the children’s subconscious and will definitely help them in the future. Our next step is to show that these are not single objects, so you can build everywhere. We have set a certain bar and we want investors and customers to understand that the product that they will hand over to the city must have the characteristics of an architectural building: an individual appearance, well-thought-out interiors.

Scale and attraction

A public building can be designed to create attraction. As practice shows, the larger the object, the more it plays the role of the educational and cultural center of the quarter.

The school for 825 students was built on the working outskirts of Moscow in Biryulyovo Vostochny, mkr. 3 “Zagorye”. In such areas, as a rule, in their free time, teenagers have nowhere to go. This is how the idea of the school as a multifunctional facility was born, not only as an educational center, but also as a leisure center. Just such a project we did in Zagorye – with two autonomous blocks: educational and leisure-cultural with separate entrances. In the public part there are concert, sports, dance halls, a media library, an Internet club, workshops…

Now, after three months of operation, we can say with confidence: the project was a success. Children and adults spend here evenings long, doing sports sections, circles. Thus, we managed to revive the tradition of clubs – we laid such an idea in the project, therefore we dedicated the school to Alexander Rodchenko and his project of the Workers’ Club.

The next two schools in New Moscow are even bigger. The secondary school in the village of Rasskazovka is designed for 1,650 students (66 classes), and in the urban settlement of Moskovsky – for 1,375 students (55 classes). Like the school in Zagorje, these will be public buildings with educational and leisure functions. In the Rassazovsky school, in agreement with the Department of Education, instead of two assembly halls, one was made, but a large one – for 990 places. In fact, the residents of the new building district will have their own cinema and concert hall with an impressive stage, stalls, mezzanine and balconies. The public block has an autonomous entrance. The school has five sports halls with sliding partitions, with the help of which the 30-meter hall can be divided into two small ones. The dimensions of the building made it possible to realize the idea of a dining room with windows on different sides.

These schools are investment objects, so more complex architecture became possible. We used a parabolic dome at the Rasskazovka school and a teardrop dome at the Moskovsky school to create light wells. Thanks to this, indoor recreation on the third and fourth floors will receive additional lighting. There will also be a winter garden, an aquarium with fish. High school students will have a zone of psychological relief…

What was the idea behind the facades? We want to bring historical memory of the architecture of different eras and cities to new microdistricts. Therefore, the storytelling school is dedicated to reflecting the culture of Italy in the architecture of St. Petersburg. St. Petersburg with St. Isaac’s Cathedral, raised bridges is depicted on the main facade, and Florentine courtyards inside. I think it will be interesting for both children and adults. At the same time, the school does not look huge: the length of the building is proportional to the surrounding buildings, it approximately corresponds to the height of two 22-storey buildings located along the building line of the block on both sides of the school, if we imagine them as a “lying skyscraper”.

New Moscow

Rasskazovka will build three kindergartens for 950 children. One of the kindergartens – for 250 places – passed the regulatory commission of the Moscow Committee for Architecture under the leadership of Sergey Kuznetsov. The Architectural Council agreed on a variant with brighter facades. Inspired by the paintings of Marc Chagall, the architects painted a festive fairy-tale world with two-story houses, cypresses, the sun and kites. Such a southern town by the sea. ..

Two more kindergartens for 350 children each are new projects that differ from our already implemented facilities – a kindergarten for 350 children in Zagorye and a kindergarten for 350 children in the village of Yazovo. Since the building was formed, it was necessary to fit in the gardens in such a way as to solve the problem of insolation and organize the urban development of the quarter, dividing it into courtyards. Therefore, the shape of the gardens turned out in the form of the letter “L” – this made it possible to achieve the best insolation of group cells with maximum compactness.

The theme of the first preschool educational institution was Paris-Moscow. In the capital of France, I studied and worked for some time. The feeling of Paris and love for Chagall, for his painting “View of Paris from the Window”, which turned 100 years old in 2013, were reflected in the exterior of the building. On the one hand, we drew a view from the window to the Eiffel Tower, on the other hand, we got “View from the window to Moscow” – the Shukhov Tower, a tram traveling along Shabolovka are pleasing to the eye.

The second object is located in the east of the quarter, so we decided to make it in oriental style with a Japanese garden in the Botanical Garden, cherry blossoms on the facades. It is dedicated to the reflection of the culture of Japan and China in the architectural landscape of Moscow. In all three gardens, painted fiber cement boards were used for cladding. As a result, buildings with bright cheerful facades turned out, I am very pleased with the result.

A new microdistrict is also being built in Moskovsky. The concept of the master plan is based on the motives of the works of the designer Lazar Lissitzky. So, in the 1st microdistrict of Moskovsky, two constructivist projects of a school and a preschool educational institution with our vision of Lazar Lissitzky appeared. Investors accepted these options, but when the school project in Rasskazovka came out, the developer wanted to do something similar. I objected: identical buildings are obtained. Therefore, now we are finishing the third version of the facade solution, based on the recommendation of Evgenia Dmitrievna Murinets, simple geometric shapes are taken.

Construction work is in full swing at Rasskazovka and Moskovsky schools. I personally conduct field supervision, devoting it almost every Saturday. Their opening together with kindergartens is scheduled for September 1, 2015.

All over Russia

All our standard and custom projects are inexpensive due to the fact that they are compact and functional. When you think carefully about the layout, you save money.

This is my main idea – to save on empty corners and unnecessary equipment, but to make high-quality architecture.

By order of the city authorities, we have developed standard designs for pre-school educational institutions for 90, 190 and 220 children recommended for construction in the capital and regions. At the request of the Department of Urban Planning Policy, we also plan to give the go-ahead for inclusion in the federal register of standard design documentation for two facades of preschool educational institutions for 190 places: on Verkhniye Polya street, 40, bldg.
