The first, and perhaps the most famous one, is Cambridge (Cambridge) Middlesex County.

The city is world famous for two educational and research centers, perhaps the best in the world: Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Harvard University is one of the most famous universities in the United States and around the world, the oldest university in the United States.
Harvard University ranks first in the country for the number of billionaires among alumni, and its library is the largest academic library in the United States and the third largest in the country.
Harvard is part of a group of elite American universities – the Ivy League.
The university has the largest endowment in the world, which is $37.
1 billion.
75 Nobel laureates have been associated with the university as students, faculty or staff. The university has graduated from 8 US presidents.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MIT).
One of the most prestigious technical schools in the US and the world. Also known as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Salem or Salem (Salem) in Essex County this is exactly the city
It was here that the famous events took place in 1692-1693.
The local Puritans and the head of the city declared a witch hunt, it lasted about a year and a half. “The Witches of Salem” became a household name.
The town-born writer Nathaniel Hawthorne narrates about the manners of the Salem people of that time in his novel The Scarlet Letter (1850).
Now it is a tourist center. There is still the House of Seven Fronts, immortalized in the book of Hawthorne.
There is a Hawthorne Museum in the house where he was born (built around 1740).
Two houses, Hawks and Derby, are part of the Salem Marine National Historic Site. Several others are part of the Peabody Essex Museum’s exclusive complex.
Salem State College is the largest public college in the state.
But the famous Salem cigarettes are not named after this city 🙂 There is another place in North Carolina.
Waltham (Waltham) is a western industrial suburb of Boston.
The city is home to the headquarters of Raytheon, one of the largest companies in the US military-industrial complex, Morgan Kaufmann Publishers, robot manufacturer Boston Dynamics, and telecommunications software developer NetCracker.

Braintree is home to several prominent figures in American history: Abigail Adams , Statesman John Hancock and General Sylvan Thayer , one of the original superintendents of the US Military Academy located at West Point.

In 1920, the murders took place in Braintree, which led to the trial of Sacco and Vanzetti.
A lot of films have been filmed and filmed in this suburb of Boston. For example ; Tell Me You Love Me, directed by Otto Preminger, The Departed, directed by Martin Scorsese and many more.
If you leave Boston, then the most famous city in the state is Plymouth (Plymouth) – in the Plymouth district of the same name. Along with Brockton, it is one of two county seat. Plymouth’s municipality area is the largest in the state.
Founded in 1620 on the shores of Cape Cod, the city is the oldest European settlement in New England and one of the oldest in the United States. For a long time the city was the center of the colony of the same name. Plymouth is twinned with the eponymous city in England, after which it received its name
Tourism is the backbone of the city’s economy. There are many museums, including open-air ones.
The latter include the famous project Plymouth Plantation (Plymouth Plantation) – a historical and ethnographic complex that includes, in addition to the stationary exhibition, two recreated settlements: the settlement of the colonists of the 17th century and the settlement of the Indians of the same times. Instead of guides, these open-air museums are staffed by people dressed according to the fashion of the time. They kind of make up the population of the villages. Being engaged in “everyday affairs”, which formed the basis of the life of the Indians or colonists, they are ready to answer any questions from tourists.
As part of the same project, since 1957, tourists have been given access to a full-size replica of the Mayflower – Mayflower II, on which the first colonists arrived. The ship is moored in Plymouth Bay.
Plymouth Rock is also a traditional landmark. According to legend, it is the part of the land where the first settlers first set foot.
Not far from Plymouth Rock is a monument to the first settlers, referred to as the National Monument to the Founding Fathers.
The second largest city in the state is Worcester (Worcester) in Worcester County.
The city is named after the English Worcester.

Notable natives composer John Adams
Regular Springfield (Springfield) – where without it in the USA :-)) But this is perhaps the most-most famous. The county seat of Hampden County.
It is the third most populated city in the state and fourth in New England.
Why is this the most famous of Springfields? And everything is simple – in 1891, a local school teacher of physical education, James Naismith, came up with a game for students, which later became one of the most popular sports in the world – basketball.
In 1959 the Basketball Hall of Fame was opened in the city.
Smith & Wesson and Big Y are also headquartered in the city.
Springfield is also home to Forest Park, one of the nation’s largest municipal parks.
Holyoke (Holyoke) is located in Hampden County, between the Tom Mountain Range and the west bank of the Connecticut River.
The city was named after Elizur Holyoak, who explored the area in the 17th century.
City has the highest percentage of Puerto Ricans in the US (outside of Puerto Rico)
Holyoke is one of the first planned industrial cities in the United States. Built in tandem with the Holyoke Dam to utilize Hadley Falls’ hydropower, it is one of the few New England cities to have been built on a grid plan. In the late 19th century, the city produced about 80% of the writing paper used in the United States and was home to the largest paper mill architectural office in the country, as well as the world’s largest paper, silk, and alpaca wool mills. Although there are significantly fewer businesses in Holyoke today in the paper industry, the city is still referred to as “Paper City”.
While operating the Holyoke test artificial canal in the 1880s, hydraulic engineer Clemens Herschel invented the venturi meter to determine the use of water by individual mills in the Holyoke canal system.
Today, the city is home to a number of specialty manufacturing companies, as well as the Massachusetts Green High Performance Computing Center, an intercollegiate research center that opened in 2012.
But that’s not the point. Holyoke is home to the Volleyball Hall of Fame and is known as the “Birthplace of Volleyball” because the international Olympic sport was invented by William G. Morgan and first played here in 1895.
Lowell (Lowell) – a city in Middlesex County

The J. & W. R. Wing Company, the largest whaling company in the United States, was headquartered in the city.
Herman Melville published his novel Moby Dick, or the White Whale, which begins in New Bedford.
Brockton (Brockton) – a city in Plymouth County
The city is sometimes called the “City of Champions”, mainly due to the success of boxers Rocky Marciano and Marvin Hagler, for whom this city is native, as well as the famous Brockton University (Brockton High School).

Medford (eng. Medford ) is a city in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The city stands on the Mystic River, five miles northwest of Boston. According to the US Census Bureau in 2010, the population of Medford was 56,173 people.

4 Gypsy moth History
Early history
Medford was founded in 1630 as part of the city of Charlestown. The city got its first name “Mystic” from Thomas Dudley, but was later renamed “Midford” [1] . In 1634, the land north of the Mystic River became the private property of former Governor Matthew Cradock, while the land on the other side became the property of John Winthrop, Governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony [2] . There are several variants of the name of the city: it can consist of the words “meadow” and “ford” (eng.
meadow and ford) or comes from the name of the two villages of Myford or Metford in Staffordshire [3] .
In 1637 the first bridge was built across the Mystic River, where Cradock Bridge now stands [4] . It was the only bridge across the Mystic until 1787 and was one of the main routes to Boston (although ferries and crossings were also used) [5] . The bridge was rebuilt in 1880 and 1909 [4] .
Until 1656, all northern lands of Medford belonged to Cradock, his heirs, or Edward Collins. As the land was divided among people from different families, the new owners began to meet and make decisions locally, more independently of Charlestown. In 1674 a City Council was elected, and in 1689 representatives to the legislature were elected. The city got its own religious boardroom in 1690 year and the house of social meetings in 1696 [5] .
Modern Times
The land south of the Mystic River was known as the “Mystic Fields”.
They were given by Charlestown to Medford in 1754 [6] . Also transferred were “woodlots of Charlestown” and part of the town of Woburn (now Winchester) [7] .
The population of Medford increased from 230 in 1700 to 1114 in 1800. After 1880, the population increased rapidly, reaching 18,244 in 1900 [8] . Beginning in the 1840s and 1850s, farmland was subdivided into lots and sold for the construction of residential and commercial buildings. In connection with the increase in population, schools, police, post office, gas lighting, electricity, telephone, railways appeared in the city. Tufts University was founded in 1852, and Crane Theological School was opened in 1869.
Medford was promoted to town in 1892 [9] and became a center of industry producing bricks [10] , roof tiles, rum [11] , crackers and clippers [12] , such as White Swallow and Kingfisher [13] .
Transport

In the 17th century the main roads of the city were High Street, Main Street, Salem Street, Stoneham Road and South Street. But the road system did not start a massive expansion until the 18th century [14] . In 1860 a horse tram was drawn from Medford to Somerville and Charlestown. Trams were replaced by buses in the 20th century. Between 1956 and 1963, the route 93 [15] was built.
Gypsy moth
In 1868, the French astronomer and naturalist, Leopold Treovolt, tried to breed silkworms using the gypsy moth. Soon some of the butterflies were able to get outside and quickly spread throughout North America.
Song Festival
At the end of the 19th century, in a tavern and boarding house on the High Street (Simpson’s Tavern), local resident James Pierpont wrote the famous “Jingle Bells” after watching sleigh races. Another local resident, Lydia Maria Child (1802-1880), wrote the poem “Beyond the River and the Forest”.
Medford and the Law
Some famous crimes have taken place in Medford:
- In 1980, several Medford police officers carried out one of the largest bank and jewelry thefts in world history, robbing the Trust Bank on Memorial Day. The book The Cops Are Robbers: A Convicted Cop’s True Story of Police Corruption “” is based on this event. Today, on the site of the bank where the robbery took place, there is a Salvatore restaurant. A hole in the corner under the ceiling serves as a memory of how the robbers crawled through it and remained intact, and the surviving bank vault door serves as a memory of that event.
- Irish Winter Hill Gang criminal activities took place in Medford, in particular at the Tin Pot Cafe (now the Lighthouse Cafe) [16] .
