Hear What Parents Have To Say…
“At 2 years old, my older son knew all his colors. All learned at Inheritance!!!”
Both of our children have attended Inheritance since they were 12 weeks old. Three major reasons: 1. It’s obvious the teachers really care about our kids, it’s not just a paycheck to them. 2. A high quality curriculum. At 2 years old, my older son knew all his colors, how to count into the teens, could tell me the people he learned about during black history month, and at 3 is learning to read. All learned at Inheritance. 3. The cost is extremely reasonable.
– Shelby Harrington

My daughter started the daycare on Monday and as a parent I feel like I made the best decision for my child. Coming from a place that had a lot issues. Inhertiance has double my confidence. Very professional and very organized. My daughter loves it and the teachers made me feel so comfortable with updating me about her day. I’m excited for what the future will hold for my child.

Baltimore Residential Campus – Board of Child Care
Located on a 28-acre campus just minutes from the I-695 Liberty Road Exit, Board of Child Care’s Baltimore campus contains 14 living units and our community-based group home called Gateway. The property offers extensive recreational, vocational, and educational facilities – all nestled behind a quiet neighborhood in Milford Mill.
The Baltimore campus serves several distinct program populations with a total of 109 residential beds. In addition, it is also the organization’s operational headquarters. Also on campus are a recreation and activity center, dining hall, conference center, welcome center, chapel, and the Strawbridge School.
UPPER CAMPUS
Seven houses each have five individual rooms. Total capacity is 35 youth, with a mix of males and females. Youth who are diagnosed with emotional, developmental (including autism) and behavioral disabilities are served in this program.
LOWER AND MID CAMPUS
Our lower and mid-campus cottages serve the widest variety of youth on the Baltimore campus program. Depending on which Maryland county is making the referral, we serve youth from the Department of Social Services (DSS), the Department of Juvenile Services (DJS), and the Department of Human Resources (DHR). Youth can enter our Baltimore campus program as a voluntary placement, but that is rare.
Lower Campus: Five living units, each with 10 single rooms, a kitchen, common area, and two bathrooms.
Mid Campus: Two living units, each with 12 single rooms, a kitchen, common area, and two bathrooms.
THE GIRLS PROGRAM
Launched in late 2015, BCC’s girl’s program is designed specifically to meet the needs of high-intensity, adolescent females. Empowering girls to rise from the ashes of complex and/or chronic trauma through renewal and hope is the goal. Participants are housed on Baltimore’s lower campus cottages. The program implements relationship-based and data-proven interventions for maximum impact upon program participants and their families.
The program is currently considering new admissions until capacity is reached. Admission procedures start with your county’s appropriate DSS representative.
TREATMENT GOALS & NEXT STEPS
No matter how a child came to be in our care, our goal is to create an environment where they can grow to be successful members of their families and communities. It is important to note, however, that the programming for youth served by BCC’s residential program is designed around their ultimate plan for discharge. We know that our team can never replace a family, and we work very hard to structure programming to support whatever the appropriate next step is for that youth.
There are a wide variety of options the treatment team may consider as they craft the immediate therapeutic goals as well as the discharge plan. For example, some youth will ultimately be reunited with their families (either immediate or extended), while others will move from BCC’s residential program setting to another treatment setting. This could be a more intense treatment environment or a less intense one, such as placement in a group home or treatment foster care home.
FAMILY INVOLVEMENT & VISITS
The definition of ‘family ‘varies greatly from child to child. At BCC we define family as anyone who cares for the well being of the youth in our care. All of BCC’s social workers are trained to conduct family therapy sessions either via phone or, preferably, in person. The clinical building on campus has space specifically designed for family therapy. Depending on the discharge plan and treatment progress, weekend home visits can be scheduled for the residents.
Our clinical team works closely with the youth to determine who their sources of support are and make sure they are part of the treatment team. Each youth in care has an Individual Treatment Plan (ITP), and the ‘family’ is invited approximately every 90 days to progress meetings. Youth who successfully progress through their treatment plans have campus home visits scheduled (BCC provides transportation to and from the home).
SAMPLE PROGRAMMING SCHEDULE
The schedule outline below is a sample; each residential campus and group home is slightly different. During the summer months, youth who are not in summer school will be busy volunteering, enjoying the summer camp experience on our campus or finding an internship to gain valuable work experience.
6:30 am Wake-up, personal hygiene & Health Suite appointments.
7:30 am Cafeteria breakfast service

2:30 pm Afternoon snack upon return from school

RECREATION
Increasing self-esteem, physical health and gaining the trust of peers and adults is the goal of structured sports, fitness and club activities at BCC. Our indoor gymnasium (pictured above), fitness room, heated outdoor pool, baseball and soccer fields, basketball and volleyball courts and an adventure-based ropes course (pictured below) are useful and therapeutic.
SPIRITUALITY
Christian-based services include weekly chapel services, Bible study, and community service trips. Attending denominational services off-campus if therapeutically appropriate is permitted.
*All spiritual life programming is optional. You can read more about spiritual life here
SCHOOLING
Baltimore campus residents either continue to attend their home school, local Baltimore County zoned schools or the on-campus Strawbridge School. Read more about the Strawbridge School degree options available for students.
STAFF
A multi-disciplinary professional team provides behavioral health and therapeutic supports. The staff includes child care workers, clinicians, supervisors, and recreational staff. The youth see a BCC psychiatrist and receive medical services from the on-campus health suite

Licensed Care | Maryland Child Office of Child Care (OCC)
Health Advisory: Get the latest updates on the
Coronavirus in Maryland
Child care providers are required to be licensed and registered with Maryland’s Office of Child Care. Those not licensed and registered with the state are operating illegally and offering potentially dangerous child care.
A provider’s license is important, it indicates they are operating in compliance with Maryland state laws regarding health and safety and are visited regularly by Office of Child Care licensing professionals. A parent should always ask if a program they are considering is licensed, registered or exempt and should expect to see the license or registration visibly posted.
Illegal Child Care
The Family Child Care (FCC) home must possess a certificate of registration from the Office of Child Care and the home must meet the requirements for registration. FCC is care provided to a child 13 years or younger at a place other than the child’s residence and the provider is paid in cash or in-kind. FCC does not require a registration if care is provided to children who are related to the provider or if care is provided on a non-regular basis of less than 20 hours a month.
Child Care Centers (CCC) must possess a valid license from the Office of Child Care. CCC means an agency, institution, or establishment that, on a regular schedule for at least 2 days per week and for at least 2 hours per day, offers child care to children who are not related to the operator.
Choosing a registered or licensed child care program means that your child is being cared for by a child care provider who is regulated and monitored by the Office of Child Care. The center or family home child care:
- Submitted an application to the Office of Child Care at MSDE and been approved to provide child care.
- Has a clean criminal background check on file for every employee and, in the case of family home providers, each adult living in the home.
- Receives an annual inspection to prove the provider meets Maryland’s requirements for health and safety to help protect your child from injury and illness.
Unlicensed and unregistered child care programs have not completed any of these steps to safeguard and protect your child.
CheckCCMD.org is a searchable database of all licensed child care programs in the state of Maryland. On this site, you can search if your provider is licensed and find the results of their inspection reports. Simply go to the facility name input field and enter the name of your child care provider. If your child is cared for in someone’s home you will enter the name of the person caring for your child. If you find your child care provider listed, you can be assured that they are licensed to provide child care in the state of Maryland.
Open your child care provider’s name tab to view the details of their program and inspection results. A summary of their inspection findings and whether any areas of non-compliance have been corrected will be found within. You can also open the entire inspection report.
Perhaps when you search for your provider, you will not have any results. First, confirm that your provider’s name is spelled correctly. You may also search by zip code or by city where the child care provider is located. Find for your child care provider’s name on the list that appears. If after checking for correct spelling and conducting a search by town or zip code, your provider still does not appear on CheckCCMD, it is a possibility that you are not using a licensed child care provider.

A fascinating event will be a visit to the Sears Tower, the tallest skyscraper in the country. Its height is 443 meters, in total the building has 110 floors. The most remarkable object for visitors is located on the 94th floor and is called the John Hancock Observatory. This is a spacious observation deck with powerful telescopes. Everyone can use them to see the main sights of the city.

Cuisine and restaurants
In each national restaurant, visitors will be offered a large selection of first courses: vegetable and meat broths, goulash and fruit soups. For the second, you can order excellent meat dishes from beef, pork, turkey or chicken meat. Fans of spicy dishes may find the local culinary masterpieces a little bland. Cooks rarely add large amounts of spices and salt to meat, trying to preserve its natural taste and aroma. … Open
Traditions and mentality of Baltimore
At the end of May, the city embraces the extravaganza of heavy metal – such a musical event as Deathfest takes place. It lasts 4 days, during which famous death, black, thrash and viking metal bands visit Baltimore. It is the largest festival of its kind in the entire United States. Hardcore metal riffs include the Baltimore Soundstage, Ram’s Head Live, and the Edison Lot. Another interesting music festival is called Moonrise. … Open
Baltimore Guide
Many beautiful historic buildings can be seen while walking around Fell’s Point. Looking at it today, it is hard to imagine that this quarter was considered one of the most disadvantaged and restless in the city before. Numerous entertainment establishments were located here, the main visitors of which were sailors. Today, here you can see carefully restored historical buildings, within the walls of which … Open
Baltimore: holiday with children
Adventure lovers will love the Port Discovery Children’s Museum, which can hardly be called an ordinary museum in the usual sense of the word. Baltimore Tips
5. Telephone calls are best made from the special booths found near every major shopping mall and government office. As a rule, calls from the hotel are the most expensive for tourists. 6. In local restaurants and cafes, it is customary to leave a tip, which is 10 – 15% of the bill. A small cash reward can be left to the concierge and maid at the hotel. 7. For car rental … Open

Baltimore – the largest city in the state of Maryland
Baltimore – the largest city in the state of Maryland, known to most Russians, perhaps, only from the detective series about the “killer department” and the ketchup of the same name (remember the slogan of the TV show “Gorodok”: Baltimore is our tomato sponsor? ).
The more enlightened know that the great Poe lived and published here. In principle, both of them go well with the current look of the city: harsh, tough, concrete.
Once upon a time it was the most “Russian” city in America, since a significant part of migrants from Russia at the beginning of the 20th century settled here. In this city, 11 Russian Orthodox churches were built at different times. To the northeast of the city, just 60 km away is Washington – the heart of the country.
Baltimore’s history began with not one but several villages that sprang up randomly along the Atlantic coast around the 17th century. In 1729 they were merged into one, named after the first colonial ruler, Lord Baltimore.
Baltimore played a key role in the American Revolution of 1765-1783. City leaders, Jonathan Plowman Jr. and others, forced residents to resist British taxes, and merchants signed an agreement not to trade with the English metropolis.
The Second Continental Congress met at the Henry Veit House from December 1776 to February 1777, and Baltimore was practically the capital of the United States during this period.
In 1812, the British declared Baltimore a haven for pirates (like the Caribbean and Bermuda) and, after burning Washington, attacked Baltimore. The year 1814 became the most significant in the history of the city, since the Baltimore fortress heroically withstood a whole day of shelling by the cannons of a British ship. During the siege, Francis Scott Key, a well-known lawyer at that time, while being a prisoner of the British, wrote poems that later became the national anthem.
A few days after the siege, a general battle took place in which the Americans won. Thus, the American War of Independence was won. Baltimoreans remember the feat of their fellow citizens, and in their honor they erected a monument to those who died in the war of 1812-1814.
After this war, a new round of development began in the history of the city. The population began to grow, trade increased, railways were built. The focus of the economy shifted from tobacco plantations to logging, shipbuilding and textile production.
Edgar Allan Poe lived in the city on and off, for a total of only a few years. Here he married his 13-year-old cousin. And in 1849 the writer died in Baltimore.
Baltimore has a very clear division into zones. The northern districts of the city are the quarters of the “rich whites”. And the south is the focus of industrial buildings mixed with housing of the working class.
The best places for tourists are, of course, the center and downtown. Here attention is attracted primarily by the Inner Harbor (“Inner Harbor”), the pride of the city. The docks and warehouses around the water are crammed with art galleries, museums, cafes, designer shops and clubs.
Vessels are also moored here, sometimes quite old ones, which can be visited with a guided tour. In particular, this is a coast guard boat, the Torsk submarine from the Second World War, the Constellation sailing ship. The latter, by the way, can be considered one of the last ships of the Civil War, preserved in good condition and almost on the move. In addition, it is in the Inner Harbor that the main attractions of the city are concentrated: an aquarium, a state science center, a memorial to the victims of the Holocaust, a children’s museum “Port Discovery” and the World Trade Center.
5 things to do in Baltimore:
Explore the Edgar Allan Poe Museum in the two-story mansion on Amity Street where the writer lived for two years. The museum is open on Saturdays and Sundays.
Eat crab cake.
Enter the Cross Street Market, which has been operating here since the 19th century. Buy fresh meats, pastries and flowers.
Visit the Tradestone Gallery, which specializes exclusively in Russian decorative and applied art; in particular – on lacquered boxes.
Drive across the Chesapeake Bridge, better known as the Bay Bridge, which links the eastern shore of Chesapeake Bay with the western shore. It is actually two bridges, each with a movement in its own direction, so you can immediately return back. This is worth doing, since there is essentially nothing to see on the eastern coast. And moving west, you’ll be right in Washington in an hour.
The city’s most famous monument is the George Washington Monument, which was the first in the country and is now the oldest surviving monument. The construction of the monument began in 1815 and was completed in 1829-m. The monument is a more than 50-meter white marble column of the Doric order, at the base of which there is a small museum. On 228 steps you can climb to the very top and explore the city.
The monument is located in Mount Vernon, probably the nicest quarter of the city, north of downtown. Mount Vernon is considered the “cultural district” of Baltimore, originally the most prosperous and respected families settled here, and today the most significant urban cultural sites are located here: the Johns Hopkins University Peabody Conservatory, the Historical Society, the Museum of Modern Art, a symphony hall, an opera, an art school, a library Enoch Pratt and Methodist Church in a beautiful building built in 1872, a fine example of Victorian Gothic.
When it comes to museums and cultural life, in Baltimore, if you wish, you can find opportunities for such a pastime. The Walters Art Museum contains a world-famous collection that was collected directly by William and Henry Walters. The exhibits include paintings, sculptures, jewelry. And the city’s Art Museum houses nearly 90,000 works by artists, ranging from prints and sketches from the 15th century to a collection of Pacific Islander art. Art objects filled not only the museum itself, but also the territory with a landscaped garden around the building.

Baltimore Maryland is a dangerous city.
Baltimore. A monumental city full of hidden charm. Oakland, California
No matter where I go in the US, I always end up in the slums. No, I’m not looking for the slums, they probably find me on their own. I spent a long day in Baltimore on my way from the States to Europe, as I had spent the night in Washington DC and had taken off from the Baltimore airport. It is a fairly large and interesting city with a number of old skyscrapers, a beautiful waterfront and a motley population of blacks, Latinos, Russians, Chinese and Arabs. Those who are richer move to the outskirts, to areas of private cottages and townhouses. Baltimore is not only the second largest trading port on the East Coast of the United States, but one of the oldest cities in the country, founded in 1729.. In the old days, it was the most “Russian” city in America, since a significant part of the migrants from the Russian Empire who arrived by sea at the beginning of the 20th century settled here. To this day, there are 11 Orthodox Russian churches in Baltimore, most of which, alas, lost their parishioners many years ago and remain closed. Trouble came to the city at the peak of the overproduction crisis in the sixties, similar to what happened in Detroit (see), because of which all the very educated and active people who could leave here did it. Today Baltimore makes a strange impression.
Life in this big city seemed to come to a standstill. Cars rushing through the streets are a reminder that the zombie apocalypse has not yet arrived, but the lack of people on the streets in the city center suggests that all is not well.
Old skyscrapers are beautiful, but there are relatively few of them, especially when compared with such giants as New York and Chicago. It is generally quieter, softer and even a little more sincere. Personally, I don’t like people and enjoy it in such deserted cities. It also reminded me very much of another city-victim of the crisis, on the border with Canada and near Niagara Falls.
The city is one of the five most criminal, along with Detroit, Buffalo, St. Louis and Oakland. Your chance of becoming a victim of a robbery or murder is much higher here than in Moscow and is approximately on the level of Nairobi and Rio de Janeiro.
In 2015 Baltimore experienced serious ethnic riots with pogroms, fires, violence and casualties. The reason is quite banal: they arrested a black drug dealer and, while they were taking him to the police station, slightly broke his ribs. After that, the blacks of Baltimore began to smash and break everything around. About a thousand people were injured in the pogroms, several were shot dead by the police, and 500 were arrested.
There is some kind of life glimmering in heavily guarded office buildings, but in general there is a sense of decline –
This is me trying to tell about the city in a positive way, deliberately not photographing crowds of homeless people and trying to choose beautiful angles.
Very simple. Follow me. I just chose the shortest path to the place of interest to me on the navigator and it runs through bad areas. Yes, here most of the areas are “bad”, according to the Americans. They are shy, obviously did not know crises 1993, 1998, 2008 and so on!
Everything is fine, did you see in your childhood shots from action movies with Chuck Norris and other things from the series “Police Academy” and “Robocop”? Great, so these streets are familiar to you –
Our love for deserted streets should not lead to trouble. The fact is that we are not the only ones who love such places. There are other aesthetes who prefer to sell “nonsense” and arrange “shooters” in such dead-end alleys –
Long-abandoned manufactories –
I wanted to turn right, walking along a rather nice street, where all businesses have long been locked up. But there was a company of black guys hanging around, whose guttural “faks” flew hundreds of meters. Seeing me turning around with a camera in hand, they started yelling, like get out of here, this is their street. America is generally famous for its hospitality, and such areas in particular. In another situation, if I had some kind of grenade launcher or a Maxim machine gun on my hands, I would have ignored the aggression of the marginalized public. But today I decided not to tempt fate and passed by –
There are many such rarities in poor areas. Not because people don’t have money for a new car. Buying a used car in good condition in the States is not particularly expensive, several thousand dollars. But they love specific rarities. And I love you too –
Looking from a bad district at the business center, it may mistakenly seem that here is a decline, and there is civilization. But we were just there. It’s just as deserted and it’s better not to walk in the evening –
By the way, the Russian church, one of the 11 mentioned in Baltimore. Opens quite rarely, except on holidays.
In recent years, the city was flooded with immigrants from Latin America, there are incredibly many of them, entire areas –
Guys, this is practically the center of Baltimore, if anything –
Had lunch in a Chinese chafan. America is an amazing country in this regard. Amazing luxury and fabulous prices coexist with African poverty and devastation. In this, commentators on Soviet television programs were right. I had a great lunch at a Chinese eatery for less than $7, including a huge bowl of sea reptile soup, the same bowl of rice with vegetables and beef, and even a teapot. And the invariable cookie with a note. In mine it was written that I needed to take a break and finish what I started. What would that mean?
The very center of Baltimore, where normal people (not like you and I) are walking and having fun –
And I have to go to the famous Baltimore Museum of the Railway. And in order not to miss the plane to Frankfurt!
Do not fall asleep, there will be a continuation.
After a few hours in Baltimore
you will get the impression that you are not in America at all, at least not in North America. The thing is that the streets are full of black people – solid African Americans (64%). Here is such a “dark” city in the USA. Baltimore is an old city, located in the state of Maryland, on the Patapsco River. Due to this location, it is a major port city in the east of the country. It has many interesting sights, entertainment centers, clubs, excellent shops and cultural monuments. In general, the city is interesting for tourists. And today we leave at travel around Baltimore
.
Some facts from history
Baltimore is the largest city in Maryland. In some 10-12 years he will turn three hundred. The city was named in honor of the First Lord Baltimore, an Irish baron, when he, George Calvert, was granted a patent by King Charles I of England to settle land in the future province of Maryland. Thanks to this title, the city inherited the name – Baltimore
.
By the way, we can safely say that there is no other city in America where the English past is so closely intertwined with dreams of independence. It was a port city that faithfully served them until the beginning of the last century.
Where to stay in Baltimore
Baltimore infrastructure
is well developed. There are many hotels and guest houses to suit every budget. You go to Baltimore for a few days, you can check into a small hotel. If you come on vacation with children, perhaps it is better to stay in a luxury hotel.
But most importantly, pay attention to the location of the hotel in Baltimore – choose a safe area, for example, opt for the Little Italy quarter. Here are decent hotels, and the city center, and beautiful picturesque places with architecture of the XIX century. By the way, in this area there are a lot of good and inexpensive restaurants where you can have a delicious dinner.
What to do and see in Baltimore
Baltimore has many interesting places to visit. Did you know that the great master of detectives Edgar Allan Poe lived and worked here
? House Museum Opened in Baltimore Today
of this writer. It is better to get to it by transport or take a taxi, because. the museum is in an unsafe area. We recommend that fans of Poe’s stories visit Westminster Cemetery, where the remains of the writer are buried and a monument has been erected.
Go to Inner Harbor
. It is located in the center of Downtown. Previously, it served its intended purpose. Now it is the pride of the city and a popular shopping and entertainment area. Museums, shops and restaurants are located in places where there used to be docks. If you want to go shopping, visit the World Trade Center of Baltimore. It has many branded stores and outlets with constant discounts on goods.
Significant places to visit include Baltimore National Aquarium
, which presents the diversity and richness of the underwater world of the Atlantic Ocean. It is divided into several thematic zones. Sharks and rays swim in the outdoor pools. There are small pools with crocodiles, turtles and small fish. And on the top floor of the Aquarium there is a tropical forest with lush vegetation and birds. Every day the Aquarium hosts a dolphin show – another exciting event for adults and children.

Maryland
Science
Center
– favorite places for tourists and locals. The latter houses Science Museum
with regular interactive exhibitions. It is located on three floors of the building. And the exhibits of the museum allow you to get acquainted with the natural sciences, make a virtual “journey” through the human body, see a giant meteorite, and so on. The museum has a planetarium and an observatory.
The very same Inner Harbor
is also a open-air museum
. So, on its piers you can see a whole flotilla of ships: sailboat “USS Constellation”, the submarine of the 2nd World War “USS Torsk”, the lightship “Chesapeak” and the coast guard ship “Taney”.
Each of them is open for internal visits. Having bought a single ticket, you can walk along the decks of the ships, learn their history. Of course, the most famous of them is the military frigate “Constellation”, which means “constellation” in English. An interesting fact is that in Baltimore there are many names of streets and buildings that have English names. Moreover, there is a whole block, well restored, with the first urban buildings that the British built. So, this frigate today is the National Treasure of Baltimore and personifies the era of the Civil War in the United States, when it actually went into service.
Next to it is the legendary one, which was hit by more than 1800 shells and bombs during the Second War of Independence, but it still survived. Today it houses a museum.
There are many restaurants and cafes around the harbor. While in this city, you should definitely try the famous blue crab dish – Baltimore Crabcake
. It is a kind of sandwich with crab meat. And in Baltimore, seafood dishes are excellently cooked, for gourmets – a real paradise. The most famous cafe in the harbor – Hard Rock Cafe
.
The main architectural sights are located around the harbor itself. So, in the northern part you will see a 28-storey skyscraper – World Trade Center
. Walking west a little, is Phoenix Tower
, the octagonal tower of the Charles Center
and Bank of America
. Each of the skyscrapers has an observation deck where you can take a high-speed elevator and view the city from above.
In recent years, Baltimore has become one of the most criminal cities in the United States. Don’t go to Elwood Park, Sandtown Winchester, or the Bere. These neighborhoods are simply synonymous with the word “death”, especially for a foreign tourist, areas in which gangs of drug dealers and arms dealers have settled. To get an idea of these neighborhoods in Baltimore, watch The Wire, you won’t regret it.
Stay vigilant when traveling in Baltimore. For your safety, we advise you to visit only tourist areas of the city, such as Little Italy
(Little Italy), Falls Point
(Fells Point), Federal Hill
(Federal Hill) and Mount Vernon
(Mount Vernon).
You can spend more than one day in the latter. It is very elegant, with interesting sights such as the Walters Museum, the Peabody Conservatory (the first music institution in the United States) and the monument to George Washington. These areas are safe. In addition, Baltimore itself
is a piece of America’s colonial history that will send any curious tourist back in time. We recommend to visit there!

I can only judge by myself, but I would still venture to suggest that many tourists, especially those who traveled along a complex and eventful route, have encountered ” penultimate day effect. The essence of the effect lies in the fact that if at the beginning of the journey a person perceives everything with redoubled enthusiasm, is ready for heroic forced marches and expressions of admiration for 10 hours a day, then by the end of it such an unbearable burden of fatigue accumulates – both from the abundance of impressions and from endless journeys, that already what remains on the penultimate day passes almost unnoticed. The eye is “blurred”, the brain refuses to accept even one more piece of information about the next sight, the local cuisine makes you sick, and the soul aches and asks to go home.
Why does all this happen on the penultimate day? Because on the last day you begin to feel sad not for home, but for a journey that seems to have not yet ended, but its end is clearly looming on the horizon, and therefore a second wind opens up for a beautiful and memorable finale.
On our big trip, we spent the penultimate day in Baltimore, USA. And this penultimate day was both a confirmation that in the end there is little strength left for new impressions, and an exception to this rule. But first things first.
There are cities from which you don’t expect anything special. They are not well known, rarely grace the covers of guidebooks and travel magazines, and are not included in the top most popular tourist destinations. Another point on the map where you do not dream to go and do not want to return. Baltimore is one of those cities that are most often visited “along the way” – as a convenient, but optional stop on a route consisting of more famous and therefore more expected places for tourists.
Baltimore, the largest city in Maryland, located on the banks of the Patapsco River at its confluence with Chesapeake Bay, was also included in our program as a city along the way. The cheapest tickets offered by the ultra-low-cost Spirit Airlines from Guatemala to the Northeast coast of the United States turned out to be Baltimore, more precisely, Baltimore / Washington Airport (BWI), which, as its name implies, serves two neighboring agglomerations.
But before landing in Maryland, we had to transfer in Florida, at the Fort Lauderdale / Hollywood airport, and a fateful meeting with former compatriots who had long ago moved to the States for permanent residence and quite successfully settled in their new homeland. One of them, Tatyana, helped us a lot, prompting us to visit the Baltimore Museum of Art, which thoroughly complemented the cultural program of our trip.
2
Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI)
Due to a flight delay, we arrived at the Baltimore airport at 1 am, tired, hungry (an ultra-low-cost airline saves on food first of all), angry. Going out into the street and into the fresh air after 12 hours on the road, we instantly chilled to the bone: after hot Mexico and Guatemala, the sub-zero temperature, which is natural in November in this part of the Atlantic, seemed extremely uncomfortable. To top it off, I forgot to order a free pickup from a hotel located in the suburbs 3 kilometers from the airport that provided a similar service.
However, the tourist luck that has been with us all these long 14 days has not changed this time either. The taxi driver of another hotel, who met completely different people here, agreed to give us a lift for free, although he was not obliged to help, besides, our hotel was completely out of his way.
This was not the end of the pleasant things that happened to us in Baltimore, from which we did not expect anything special.
However, at first the city, or rather, its suburbs, made a somewhat depressing impression.
5
The next morning, having slept and rested, we took a free shuttle bus back to the airport, and from there to downtown Baltimore. Logistics BWI-Baltimore airport is very convenient for budget travelers, as there is a surface light rail line between them, and the fare is about $ 3.
1
Tatyana warned us that Baltimore is not the most prosperous and even depressing city, especially against the background of neighboring Washington with its high standard of living and salaries of government officials (this class prospers not only in Russia), security problems may arise (how strange write this not about some Mexican, but about an American city!).
Baltimore is second in the United States after Detroit in terms of the number of crimes and has a rather infamous reputation as the “drug capital”. The criminal side of Baltimore is not as well known as, for example, Los Angeles, New York or Miami, because the city itself is not associated in the mass consciousness as a spectacular backdrop for the fight between cops and organized crime. The most famous series about Baltimore that reveals its dark side is The Wire, which tells about the everyday life of Baltimore police officers who are investigating drug and corruption cases using modern technical devices.
4
Another feature of Baltimore is the predominance of the African American population (almost 65% of the total population), as well as a large number of immigrants. A quarter of the city’s residents live on or below the poverty line, working low-paid service jobs.
2
When we were in Baltimore, did we feel the unsettledness and dysfunction of this city? Disadvantaged by American standards, of course, because even the most depressing corners of the US will be better off than most of the rest of the world.
In the suburbs and on the outskirts, which we had the opportunity to see from the train window and where we walked a little later in the dark, things really look a little sad. We had no obvious security problems, no one asked what the hell we were doing in a foreign area and whether there were money in our pockets. But sometimes a chill ran down the back of the neck, when it seemed that someone’s indifferent look became a little more interested at the sight of us.
7
A truly frightening sign of the recently passed Halloween
No need to make hasty conclusions about the city, judging by its outskirts, most often representing a featureless typical building mixed with residential areas, warehouses and industrial zones.
The historical center is another matter. And just the same, the center of Baltimore rightfully has the prefix “historical”, since quite a lot of buildings of the 19th – early 20th centuries have been preserved in the city, although, of course, here you can also see skyscrapers standard for all American megacities, adjacent to the old brick and limestone houses. The fact is that Baltimore, like, for example, Boston, at one time was badly damaged by fire, as a result of which one and a half thousand buildings were irrevocably destroyed.

Baltimore is divided into several dozen districts – neighborhoods (neighborhood: “district”, “quarter”). We spent our only night in Baltimore at Mount Vernon, the oldest neighbourhood, named after the Mount Vernon estate that belonged to the first US president, George Washington. It was from this area that we started our walk around Baltimore. With the weather again, as well as on this trip in general, we were incredibly lucky – despite the noticeable November frost, it was sunny and clear, not a hint of rain.
Mount Vernon’s central landmark is the Washington Monument
– a column of snow-white marble with a figure of the president on top. The height of the column is 54 meters, which corresponds to the height of a 17-storey building. In addition, the column itself is located on a hill, as if towering above the rest of the city. It looks impressive, although, in my opinion, there is not enough free space nearby, like a similar monument in Washington, which allows you to fully appreciate the scale of the column and the harmony of its composition.
3
The Washington Monument at Mount Vernon is the first monument designed in honor of George Washington and the oldest such monument still standing today. At the base of the column is a museum. Previously, it was even possible to go upstairs (I can imagine what views open from there!), But for safety reasons, the lift was closed.
1
George Washington blesses the city
The space around the monument is interestingly organized in the form of an equilateral cross. Each of the four parts of the cross is a small square with monuments to prominent personalities, sculptures or a fountain.
Monument to John Howard, one of the politicians of the 18th and 19th centuries, the governor of Maryland, the general who commanded the Maryland army during one of the campaigns during the struggle for US independence
9
Monument to Maryland-born Roger Brooke Tony, US Attorney General and Supreme Judge
All these names, famous in the context of American history, did not tell us anything. Of much more interest was one of the four squares of Mount Vernon Park, in which four allegorical sculptures depicting War, Peace, Power and Order are located around the lion sculpture.

As for old churches, Baltimore has a lot of them. Not even that – A LOT. The fact is that a significant part of the first wave of immigrants were refugees “for religious reasons”, who went on a difficult and dangerous crossing of the ocean in the hope of freely, without persecution from the authorities, to profess their chosen faith in their new homeland.
The state of Maryland is notable for being the first in America to pass a law proclaiming freedom of religion, so that churches of various denominations can be found on the territory of the state and its largest city – from the first Roman Catholic cathedral in America to one of the oldest American synagogues. Despite the fact that Maryland was originally created as a colony of refuge for Catholics, most churches belong to various currents of Protestantism (which are innumerable).
We were not particularly interested in the churches of Baltimore, but we were lucky to see some of them along the way.
First Unitarian Church (1817), oldest building in continuous use by a Unitarian congregation
4
St. Paul’s Episcopal Church (1854), founded among the first 30 Anglican parishes in Maryland back in the 17th century
4
Zion Lutheran Church (main building – 1808). The community was founded to meet the religious needs of Lutheran Germans – immigrants from Germany and settlers from neighboring Pennsylvania.
7
We do not understand the currents of Protestantism, but we know exactly which churches can be called the most elegant and beautiful. Gothic (and its follower through the centuries – Neo-Gothic) attracts increased attention even of people far from architecture and glorifies longing for medieval romance.
Baltimore has several examples of Neo-Gothic architecture. Directly opposite the hotel we stayed at in Mount Vernon is the slender, sky-gazing building of the First Presbyterian Church (1873).
9
The church is listed on the US National Register of Historic Places and belongs to the oldest Presbyterian congregation in Baltimore.
4
This church has the highest spire in Baltimore – 83 meters (which still did not want to fully fit in the frame), visible far away.
3
Emmanuel (Emmanuel – the name of the promised Messiah in the Old Testament) Episcopal Church, built in 1854 of white limestone, is located near the First Presbyterian Church, on Cathedral Street. Another striking example of neo-gothic architecture.
1 of 4
United Methodist Church (1872), adjacent to the Washington Monument and Mount Vernon Park
7
8
We did not reach the oldest Roman Catholic cathedral in America with its giant dome – it was not on the way, but we looked into a small park, laid out in honor of Pope John Paul II.
1 of 3
All of these churches, some of which are over 200 years old, look like they were built very recently – not in the sense that they look like new builds, but in the sense that their condition and appearance are properly maintained .
And it’s not just the churches that look brand new. The entire historical center of Baltimore is in excellent condition (which I personally envy in white – I would like the same careful attitude to our Russian cities).
If you want to see what Baltimore might have been like before, I recommend that you first go for a walk in Mount Vernon. The spirit of old Baltimore, the city of the American Revolution, has been preserved here, honored, albeit for a couple of months, to become the capital of an already independent state, and a prosperous financial center, where representatives of aristocratic families and financial bigwigs preferred to settle.
Such was Baltimore in the 18th and 19th centuries, and Mount Vernon’s many monuments of architecture and history testify to its former glory and splendor. Today, in this historic district of Baltimore, which is considered prestigious for living, cafes, restaurants, art galleries, offices of various companies, libraries, museums, and hotels are concentrated.
1 of 6
Baltimore was incredibly pleasant to walk around, and that in itself was a surprise in a city from which we did not expect much, given the “penultimate day effect”.
I would never have thought, but in places this city reminded *whispers* of Paris.

Federal Bureau of Investigation analysts have determined which cities
USA
are the most dangerous
for life. Flint (Michigan), Detroit (Michigan) and Oakland (California) were in the top three in terms of growth in murders, robberies and robbery. Here, on average, there is one serious crime per 50 people per year.
The situation is not much better in other cities. Ranking in the list is carried out rather conditionally. For example, Baltimore (Maryland), being in ninth place on the list, demonstrates one of the most impressive indicators in terms of the number of murders. Last year, 219 people were killed here.
Almost all dangerous cities have high rates of violent crimes, rising unemployment, and a drop in the level of education. According to the Stringer Bureau of International Investigation, FBI experts reasonably see the reasons for the rapid growth of crime in economic problems. The business climate in many dangerous cities has been in a doldrums for years, in some cases long before the Great Recession, says John Roman, senior fellow at the Urban Institute. The 2008 crisis simply exacerbated the negative trends and accelerated the criminalization of disadvantaged regions. In the United States, the consequences of the financial cataclysms resulted not only in persistent and high unemployment rates, but also in the growth of crime.
The FBI found that up to a third of the population lives below the poverty line in dangerous cities, and unemployment is rampant in almost all cities. In seven of them, it exceeded the 10% mark, and in Detroit and Stockton, the level of the unemployed population was more than 18%.
With an average US poverty rate of 15%, in places like Detroit and Flint, the figure is over 40%. Even in Oakland, over 20% of the population lives on the verge of poverty, although California is considered the richest state in America.
According to the FBI, entire cities are now marginalized and marginalized. The story of Detroit, which in 2008 experienced the collapse of the auto industry and the actual bankruptcy procedure, is indicative. Already in 2012, 386 murders were committed in it. According to statistics, every fiftieth resident of Detroit commits a serious crime.
In addition to economic problems, dangerous cities have demonstrated an extremely low level of education among the population. In all of them, the percentage of adults with a completed secondary school certificate does not exceed 80%, while the national average is 86%.
In New Haven (number eight on the FBI list), the police even practice parole for criminals in exchange for a promise to graduate from high school or otherwise integrate into normal life. The criminogenic situation in the cities of the dangerous list is striking not only in scope, but also in a downward trend. Meanwhile, the attention of local authorities is focused not on combating socio-economic causes, but on strengthening police measures.
Thus, the sheriff of Genesee County, where the most dangerous American city – Flint, is located, proposed to the authorities an expensive plan to create a rapid reaction force to counter local gangs. He estimated the content of the police army at $3 million.
St. Louis, Missouri, ranked fourth on the list, is already heavily patrolled and monitoring the current situation. However, this does not make the locals happier: St. Louis ranked 12th in the list of unhappy cities in America according to Forbes.
The full FBI list of dangerous cities looks like this:
10. Cleveland

9. Baltimore

What do you associate the name Baltimore with? With ketchup? Or maybe with the Baltic Sea? But there is also an airfield with the same name not far from Voronezh! But in fact, today we will talk about the largest city in the state of Maryland, which I looked into on the way from Philadelphia to Washington. The port city associated with the life and death of Edgar Allan Poe seems to have absorbed the darkness of his work. Or vice versa – inspired him …
Today’s Baltimore is not the most visited place in America. Although there has never been a special idyll in this city: at first it was one of the largest American ports, where sailors rioted every evening, and now it is a predominantly African-American city in which a third of the population does not even have a secondary education.
Personally, I was primarily interested in places connected with the difficult life of Edgar Allan Poe, my favorite writer. And I also wanted to try the famous local crabcake (more on that!). The rest, I decided for myself, according to the principle – what I can do, I can do it. Therefore, in Baltimore, I allocated only one day in my plan for inspection.
2. It was already dark when I arrived in Baltimore from Philadelphia. The bus station here is located in some ass (while proudly called Downtown Baltimore), from where you can get to the center on only one single bus route. There was no desire to take a taxi. To feel the city, you have to go with the locals!
I took a picture of the interior of the Baltimore bus the very next day. Pleased with the colors of the seats, I would call it “stars in the night.” Pay attention to the yellow ribbons. To signal to the driver that you want to get out, there is no need to run to the button by the door, but you just need to click on any place on the tape.
I was surrounded only by blacks on the bus. This did not surprise me too much, I already knew that 2/3 of the population here are black. The carrier apparently decided to play a trick on the sucker-tourist, and did not stop the bus at the stop I needed, but drove me to the next one. 🙂 Just think, let’s take a walk! Getting off the bus, he took out a map and began to look where to go. Just then, some lady of 50 years old with a dog arrived in time:
– Maybe I can help you?
– Yes, thank you! Can you please tell me how to get to West Madison Street?
– Hmmm… Now I’ll tell you..
I already found it on the map and understood the route, but since I asked, you need to politely wait for an answer. The lady with the dog finally gave out:
– Perhaps the most SAFE (she emphasized this) way is through that street, there to the right, there to the right …
– Thank you!
I scratched my turnips. It turns out that even the big streets of Baltimore are not very safe in the evening. Good start!
3. The surprises continued in the hotel. It turned out that to get inside after 8 pm (!), you need to ring the bell. Ding-don! I was greeted by an exorbitantly cheerful, slightly greeting head waiter. He did not take my passport, but said that he believed in my word that I was such and such. Then, for some reason, he began to assure that this area was safe, safe. Having received the keys to the room, I did not immediately go upstairs, but first returned to the hall to get a better look at it. I usually don’t post pictures of hotels in my reports, but this is a special case. It turned out that everything here has been preserved almost from the end of the 19th century.
4. Wooden stairs, rickety and very creaky. Antique furniture, and obviously not from the store, but from the time the house was founded. Someone’s old portraits on the walls of the corridor. “Probably come to life at night!” – I thought.
After modern, Ikea style hostels in New York and Philadelphia, this hotel, which had not seen major renovations since the time of the king of peas, simply blew the roof.
5. My number. The fireplace, alas, is decorative, but it looks like it was once active. There is no general lighting, only a few table lamps. There are red curtains on the windows, flooding the room with bloody light in the morning.
6. Check out the lamp and phone! My drinking spoils the still life, of course.
My first thought was: “Probably it was in such rooms that Edgar Allan Poe’s darkest works were born!” All evening I sat and waited for a raven to knock on the door or something like that to happen. 🙂
7. But alas, no mystical stories happened this time. After sleeping, in the morning I went to explore the surroundings. The weather 100% met my expectations: for some reason I was sure in advance that it was in Baltimore that the sky would be covered with clouds and it would periodically drizzle. So it actually happened. 🙂
A small street next to the hotel, which for some reason was not recommended the day before by a lady with a dog as safe, looked more than decent during the day!
8. “Can there be some kind of crime here, among this beauty?” – I thought. At that moment, two police cars rushed down the adjacent street with flashing lights.
9. Literally 50 meters from these lovely snowflakes on the windows – a completely different picture.
10. In general, it was difficult to draw an objective conclusion from the surroundings of the hotel about what Baltimore is like. I made my way to the west side of town, to the Edgar Allan Poe House Museum, taking in the surroundings along the way.
11. I had been walking for 20 minutes, and everything around was calm. Except that there seemed to be a lot of policemen in the city. Other than that, it’s a pretty nice place! Here, for example, what a cool cathedral was found here!
12. On the fence, over the main banner on the topic of the cathedral, there is another banner on the theme of the local football club: “Believe it, Baltimore!” Imagine this with us, for example, on the fence of the Elokhov Cathedral: “God save Spartak!” 🙂
The club is called Baltimore Ravens (Baltimore Ravens), and the whole city is crazy about it! I’ve seen stretch marks like this before. Do I need to explain why, in the city that Edgar Allan Poe made famous, the team is named after stern black birds?
13. Cool graffiti with kind kids.
14. Another one with a surly superhero. HOW were they drawn? Well, it was necessary to put scaffolding!
15. Meanwhile, as we moved away from the center, the picture changed. My fat Lonely Planet guidebook warned me that Edgar Allan Poe’s house is in a high-crime area, so it’s best to take a taxi…
crime rate?” I mentally answered the guidebook.
17. But the criminal area in America turned out to be a little different than in Russia. At some point, I noticed that there was no longer a single white man on the streets…
18. More to come. There are posters on the windows with the inscriptions “Stop shooting, start living!” From time to time there are suspicious-looking companies, loudly and with copious use of the word “fuck”, shouting something to each other across the street, and sometimes unexpectedly and loudly addressing you: “Yo man wassup?” when you pass them. Well, in general, such a normal criminal area, just as if he got into his native GTA 3! 🙂
19. The streets are deserted, but burnt blacks are occasionally encountered. I even asked one where the Poe Museum was. It turned out that he did not know such a writer. Who would have doubted… 🙂
20. The right house was found just one block away from the unlucky Negro. Here it is, on the corner, unremarkable. During his lifetime, Edgar Poe remained unrecognized and ended his life in terrible poverty. Several decades passed before French writers, and then the whole world, paid tribute to the great man.
Unfortunately, the museum was closed for the winter!
Nothing! But he looked at another America! By the way, I did not see the police in this part of the city at all. They probably figure it out somehow.
21. Without much delay in west Baltimore, I headed back to the center in transit through Westminster Cemetery. Here the great writer found his peace. Initially, Edgar Allan Poe was buried in a far corner, in the presence of only a few people, and after a few years the grave was completely forgotten.
22. After the confession of the writer, his ashes were moved closer to the entrance and a monument more adequate to his talent was erected. His wife Virginia Clemm and mother-in-law Maria Clemm are also buried here (in fact, family relations are somewhat more complicated here, but you yourself will read about this if you are interested). There are a lot of visitors here, which surprised me.
23. My bus to Washington was scheduled only in the evening, so I could safely walk for a few more hours.
26. At the beginning of the story, I mentioned an unusual word – crabcake. Actually, already from the name you can guess what it is: a kind of pastry with crab meat. The most local dish. Almost every restaurant here serves it, for 20 dollars apiece. But after doing a little research, I found out that the best (many people think so) crabcake in Baltimore is not in restaurants, but . .. in a local Lexington market in some eatery. That’s where I went.
The market turned out to be very cool. Although around it there are again quarters mostly with a black population of low income, in the market itself there is a real American mixture: there are enough Asians and Latinos (in other places in Baltimore you won’t find them with fire during the day).
29. An eatery with crabcakes was found at the far end of the market and turned out to be really very titled, despite the fact that food is put on paper plates here, and you have to eat while standing – at this very table below in the photo.
30. Here it is, the long-awaited meal! For some reason, I didn’t think of taking a picture of him on my plate, I really wanted to eat. The crab cake tasted just as good as it looked! Never tried anything like it! Will be in Baltimore – I recommend.
31. The peculiarity of crabcakes is that they are made from blue crab meat. These live in local waters. It would be better, however, they did not put them on display – it became a pity immediately. 🙁
32. Having satiated my stomach and mourned about blue crabs, I set off to study local transport. Like Philadelphia the day before, Baltimore pleased him with its diversity. For example, the city tram. Just like ours, only with more cars.
33. And most importantly, there is a subway here. True, only one line, but so good. I was surprised by the presence of a full-fledged lobby, for America this is not very typical.
34. At least a few stations need to ride in any way! Tickets are sold in vending machines. For one trip – $1.6, unlimited for 1 day (including buses) – $3.5. I preferred the second option. Beneficial enough.
35. Go!
36. The stations are not so hot, but they don’t look like Philadelphia or New York at all. More like something European.
37. The third city – and already the fourth car interior.
38. The stations turned out to be not completely the same type, which I expected, but even with a hint of some kind of their own face.
39. After riding the subway for a while, I thought that I still need to look at the place that is considered the heart of the city – the Inner Harbor. It has an almost square shape, and along its banks there is almost everything that is usually seen in Baltimore by those who were brought here by a difficult one.
40. There are several historic ships and a submarine in the harbor. You can visit all of them with one ticket, which costs about $20. I didn’t have much time, so I left the ships for another time. And the angular building behind the submarine is the National Aquarium!
41. Torsk – if anything, this is the name of the submarine. Very amused picture! 🙂
42. The aquarium on the other side is all glass, reflecting the office centers of Baltimore. How unlike the neighborhoods around Edgar Allan Poe’s house!
43. The police officers patrolling this part of the city are, I think, the envy of their counterparts in other areas. In general, during the day I saw twice how the police took someone on the streets, and how many times their cars rushed past with the howl of sirens – you can’t count!
44.. What I liked most about the Inner Harbor was the cute old lighthouse. Theoretically, you can go up there for free, but for some reason (we would have written “technical”)) that day it did not work.
46. And, of course, you can’t help but notice here. this hulk with black pipes that betray the former power plant. Now the main part of the former machine room is given over to a bookstore.
47. From the inside, the pipes look no less impressive!
48. The quarters adjacent to the Inner Harbor look nice for modern development.
49. But just a couple of hundred meters away, the picture is sometimes different. Contrasts…
