San Diego, USA City Guide
From time immemorial, these lands were inhabited by Indian tribes of Kumeyai.
The first white man who violated their usual way of life was the Portuguese João Rodrigues Cabrillo. He was in the service of the Spanish crown and was equipped on an expedition in search of new lands. In 1542, a conquistador sailed to the shores of the bay and gave it the name San Miguel, in honor of the holy day. This place was the first visited by Europeans on the west coast of the United States.Sixty years later, the Spanish navigator, merchant and cartographer Sebastian Vizcaino entered these waters. After serving on the coast in honor of Saint San Diego (the patron saint of his ship), he renamed this land after him.
The colonization of San Diego began in 1769, when another expedition established a fort and a Catholic mission here. It was the first European settlement and the largest mission in California, with about 1,400 baptized Indians living there by the end of the 18th century.
In 1821, San Diego became part of the newly declared Mexican Empire, which became the First Mexican Republic two years later. The fort was abandoned, but a city began to grow near the hill. However, by 1830 the population rapidly declined and the city lost its status, since at that time about 100-150 people lived in it.
As a result of the Mexican–American War of 1846-1848, the territory of California, including San Diego, was ceded by Mexico to the United States under the terms of the Guadalupe Hidalgo.
When California was admitted to the United States in 1850, San Diego became the county seat of the California county. This looked like an advance since the city’s population was only 650. One of the problems limiting the city’s growth was its location away from navigable waters.
Merchant William Heath Davis put forward the idea of creating a city on the bay called “New San Diego”, a few miles south of the original settlement. Together with his like-minded people, he bought 160 acres of land, where streets were laid, a large wharf and a warehouse were built. Locals called the project “New City” and “Davis’ Folly”. At first, the enterprise did not succeed due to the lack of fresh water and the hostility from the inhabitants of the old settlements. And only by 1867 the project realized itself.
New San Diego grew and soon eclipsed Old City as the economic and government center. However, it remained somewhat of a backwater town until the advent of the railroad in 1878.
San Diego’s strategic location during the Spanish-American War (1898) led to the development of naval infrastructure. And the First World War finally oriented the city towards the development of the military-industrial complex for the next few decades.
The beginning of the 20th century for the city was marked by the holding of two major international exhibitions here: the Panama-California exhibition in 1915-1916 and the California-Pacific exhibition in 1935-1936.
During World War II, San Diego became a major center of military and defense activity due to the presence of facilities and production of military equipment. As a result, the city’s population grew rapidly. If in 1930 its number was about 148 thousand, then by 1950 it had grown to 333,865 people.
In the last months of the war, the Japanese planned to attack several US cities, starting with San Diego. The plan was called “Operation Cherry Blossoms at Night” and called for the creation of kamikaze planes filled with infected fleas. They were supposed to crash into the residential buildings of the city to spread the plague and kill tens of thousands of civilians. The execution was scheduled for September 22, 1945, but, fortunately, was not implemented because Japan had surrendered earlier.
