Park History – Elitch Gardens

Elitch Gardens has touched the lives of most Colorados and is responsible for many of its best memories. Elitch Gardens has always been more than just an amusement park, it has also been:

  • One of the first zoos west of Chicago.
  • Home of the first Denver Symphony Orchestra
  • First Denver Botanical Garden
  • Colorado’s first children’s museum and entertainment center.
  • Site of Denver’s first cinema and…
  • Home of the Trocadero Ballroom, where much of Denver danced and romanced.

Bustling little town Denver was only 30 years old when Elitch Gardens first opened its gates.

1890

Elitch Gardens opens its gates to the public for the first time. John and Mary Elich have turned their farm on the outskirts of Denver into a cool green oasis and zoological park for everyone to enjoy. The Elitches’ friends, P. T. Barnum and Mr. and Mrs. Tom Thumb, were among the crowd on opening day.

1891

John Elitch has passed away. Mary Elitch continues to manage Elitch Gardens and becomes the only woman in the world to own and operate a successful summer resort. Throughout her life, she was known as the “Gracious Lady of the Gardens” and lived in the territory until her death.

1892

The Elitch Theater opens and begins its tradition of a century of first-class entertainment. Actors and actresses over the years have included Sarah Bernhardt, Douglas Fairbanks Sr., Cecil B. DeMille, Grace Kelly, Lana Turner, Mickey Rooney and others.

1909

The log entrance gate was demolished and a richly decorated Greek Revival stucco gate was built.

1916

Denver businessman John Mulvihill buys Elitch Gardens from Mary Elitch and starts a dynasty of four generations of family owners.

1917

The Trocadero Ballroom opens. Over the years, such famous musicians as Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, Guy Lombardo, Gene Krupa and Lawrence Welk have performed on stage. Many Denver residents travel to the Trocadero to enjoy world-class dancing and music.

1928

The carousel, which took three years to make by hand, was delivered by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company. It operates in the park to this day.

1930

John Mulvihill passed away and his son-in-law Arnold Gertler became the owner of Elitch Gardens.

1936

Ferris wheel installed.

1954

KiddieLand opens at Elitch Gardens. Popular television star Hop-A-Long Cassidy presides over the opening ceremony.

1958

Stucco front gate demolished due to 38th Avenue widening. It is replaced by an art deco aluminum arch.

1965

The famous Mister Twister roller coaster is built and advertised “to not have a single foot of straight track.” A replica of the coaster still operates in the park.

1975

The famous Trocadero ballroom has unfortunately been demolished due to the unpopularity of ballroom dancing.

1994

Final $95 million funding package completes and construction begins on new Elitch Gardens in the Central Platte River Valley in downtown Denver. It will be the first amusement park built within a US urban area in over 30 years. After 104 years of success, Elitch Gardens is closing its doors in a prominent location in northwest Denver.

1995

New Elitch Gardens opens at a new location in downtown Denver.

1996

Premier Parks, Inc. acquires Elitch Gardens, ending eighty years of family ownership.

1997

January

In a dramatic statement by Premier Parks, Inc. announces massive multi-million dollar beautification program for Elitch Gardens.

1997

May

Vastly improved Elitch Gardens impresses Denver with three incredible rides: The Mind Eraser, a hanging, inverted roller coaster with a loop; Tower of Doom – a giant vertical fall attraction; and Shipwreck Falls, a family-friendly water attraction.

June

Elitch Gardens introduces Island Kingdom, Colorado’s first waterslide adventure park. Island Kingdom is still free with general admission to the park. Elitch Gardens is now America’s only downtown theme park and water park.

1997

July

The Trocadero is back. Built in honor of the famous Trocadero Ballroom at Elitch Gardens, the new Trocadero Theater seats 700 people and can easily be converted into a ballroom.

1998

May

Another exciting year begins with the announcement of StarToon Studios, a pint-sized playground with cool rides and a multi-story interactive entertainment factory. Plus three exciting new rides and a new 500 seat air-conditioned food court!

1998

Premier Parks, Inc. buys Six Flags theme parks and expands brand to Denver. Elitch Gardens becomes Six Flags Elitch Gardens.

1999

Six Flags Elitch Gardens opens with even more sensational new rides and attractions, including Boomerang slides; children’s favorite, Looney Tunes MovieTown; and the Batman Forever Thrill Spectacular.

2000

Six Flags Elitch Gardens opens its 110th season, celebrating years of fun spanning three centuries!

2001

Six Flags Elitch Gardens is adding a brand new spring concert series featuring amazing local and national talent in every musical genre. And thrill-seekers will appreciate the brand new exciting stunt show “Carnival of Chaos” performed by Batman and Robin.

2002

Six Flags Elitch Gardens offers a cure for the usual slides – Flying Coaster! On this first-of-its-kind ride, passengers lie down and fly through a mile-high sky.

2003

Six Flags Elitch Gardens is amazing! In 2003, Six Flags Elitch Gardens is offering the biggest and best spring and fall concert series ever. The top stars performing at the Universal Lending Pavilion at the Pepsi Center delight Six Flags guests.

2004

Who needs snow to snowboard? Six Flags Elitch Gardens features Half Pipe, the first of its kind in North America. Guests can now spin the giant snowboard in countless 360-degree cycles up and down the 100-foot-tall halfpipe. Half Pipe is not an advertisement!

2005

Island Kingdom Waterpark is expanding with the addition of EDGE. This four-story water ride sends water adventurers down more than four floors at a vertical angle. The massive slide gives intrepid adventurers the thrill of “free fall” before they race at breathtaking speed to the edge of the other side. Riders then dive back and forth over more than a thousand gallons of bubbling water before splashing in the relaxing Castaway Creek.

2006

Six Flags theme parks across the country are celebrating 45 years of family fun and entertainment!

2007

CNL Properties acquired Elitch Gardens from Six Flags and retained PARC to manage the park. They dropped the Six Flags brand and returned to Elitch Gardens.

2011

Herschend Family Entertainment (HFE) takes over the management of the park. The history of Elitch Gardens and HFE has much in common and the park is benefiting from many new initiatives.

2012

Three new rides have been added to Elitch Gardens Theme and Water Park. Added to the water park is the thrilling all-enclosed Tube Top slide. The new take on KiddieLand includes two new rides: Rockin’ Tug and Tike Bikes.

2013

New Blazin’ Buckaroo Family Roller Coaster has been added to KiddieLand. A thrilling first run, several fast turns and a top speed of 15 mph make this steel ride the perfect roller coaster for the whole family. Live shows are doubled with animal interactions, magical illusions, amazing acrobatics. Summer has never been so fun!

2014

Brain Drain introduced, brand new 7 Story Steel, Looping Thrill Ride. Free concerts are back as popular artists take to the stage throughout the summer. In addition to the entertainment lineup, Dive-In Movies are featured so guests can relax and watch their favorite family movies while swimming in the wave pool!

2015

Elitch Gardens celebrates 125 years of fun! SlideZilla, a brand new 6-story Hydro-Beast, is joining the water park. Colorado’s first hybrid slide was named the best water attraction of 2014 by IAAPA and features two exciting user features: BehemothBowl and TornadoWAVE. He will spin you, swallow you and spit you out!

2017

Two new exciting rides have been added – one wet and one wild. At Star Flyer Theme Park, this extreme swing ride has 48 guests sitting in pairs in open seats, legs dangling and hair blowing, as they climb to the top of a 17-story tower and fly in circles at over 50 mph At Mega Wedgie Water Park, the tower for extreme high-speed slides. Ride down a choice of 3 body slides from 6 floors up!

2019

NEW RIDE! Take a ride on the wild side… of art. Kaleidoscape by Meow Wolf is a breathtaking journey like no other. Join us on an odyssey of creative discovery through breathtaking artistic landscapes. Kaleidoscape by Meow Wolf is not a roller coaster. This is an exciting journey for the mind. The latest installation from the developers of House of Eternal Return takes passengers on an interactive journey led by artists.

Elitch Gardens’ is celebrating its history as one of the oldest continuously operating amusement parks in the United States in 2020 as it turns 130 years old. Throughout the season, the park will honor its past while keeping the future in mind, providing quality family entertainment that has entertained Colorado for generations.
