SUPPORTING FAMILIES
The Salvation Army is committed to serving all families and children, including those with disabilities, by offering enrichment services that help children develop, learn and achieve success.
Our services provide:
- A healthy, safe and supportive learning environment for children from all backgrounds
- An opportunity to understand a child’s individual needs and design a learning experience that help them to grow
- Parent education and parenting support on site at the centers
- Opportunities throughout the year for parents to participate in center activities
- Extended hours to support working families
- Assistance with access to child care subsidies and funding
EARLY HEAD START COLLABORATIVE
The Salvation Army, in partnership with Atonement Child Care Center and Family Based Child Care, provides Early Head Start services to nearly one hundred infants, toddlers and their families. Each child will have the opportunity to participate in an Early Head Start program until reaching his or her third birthday, while attending a New York State licensed child care center or family care provider. At the age of three, children will transition to Head Start and /or Universal Pre-Kindergarten. This collaborative program will include the following enrichment services:
- Enhanced child development interventions
- Specialized caregivers
- Family support, including assistance with diapers and formula
- Parent education and training
- Health and nutrition screenings
EDUCATIONAL PARTNERSHIPS
The Salvation Army is very proud to join many other partners in Central New York to support early learning. We are working locally to implement the National Grade Level Reading Campaign, assuring all children reach grade level reading by the third grade. We are actively involved with the Early Education Alliance and The Literacy Coalition, which supports the Dolly Parton “Imagination Library,” that provides children and their families with a new book each month.
The Salvation Army collaborates with the Syracuse City School District by offering full time, enriched Universal Pre-Kindergarten instruction to all four year olds in our Cab Horse Commons Child Care Center. Cab Horse Commons also offers Head Start programming to three and four year olds through a collaboration with PEACE, Inc.
THE BENEFITS OF EARLY HEAD START
Early education is viewed as the foundation for childhood development. Social and emotional skills are learned, strengthened and considered as basic building blocks that begin to take shape while children are very young through play and with others. Research shows that 90% of a child’s brain development occurs by 3 years of age and children who have access to health resources and early learning opportunities exhibit school readiness skills by age 5. This program supports children’s development of secure attachment with peers and adults.
Infants and toddlers in our Day Care Facilities and the Early Head Start program receive high quality care in a supportive learning environment for both children and families. Teachers help in developing and refining skills to meet developmental milestones with assessments and individualized child planning. The continuity of care through our facilities allow stable and uninterrupted support to families and children. Funding support is available for those eligible.

Briyan and MAIRA BRAIS AND Syracuse, New York State. Brian works as a mechanical engineer, and his wife Mary works as a medical assistant surgeon (physician assistant, this is such a specialty one step lower than a doctor, something like a paramedic or an advanced nurse). Brian maintains a detailed budget for his family, with over 40 separate categories of expenses. “Every morning I come to work and check my bank accounts and credit cards and write down the latest spending on a spreadsheet,” explains Brian McManus. “I try to do this every day – and it takes maybe three minutes.” nine0023
In 2014, they earned an average net (after taxes) of $14,735 per month. Of course, someone may argue that their income is above average. For example, according to statistics, the average income of a family with children is about $7,500 per month after taxes. However, this median income includes very different families – from families in which one spouse does not work, to those living elsewhere in the country with a lower cost of living, and those in which the spouses are not educated. Therefore, the income of the McManus family, although above average, is nevertheless quite typical for families like them – two working spouses living in the state of New York, with a normal professional education, and in-demand specialties. The median income of a physician assistant in 2012 was about 90 thousand per year, and the average income of a mechanical engineer in 2012 was about 80 thousand per year. The tax rate for people in their situation (house, mortgage, 3 children) is about 18% (including federal tax, New York state tax, and social taxes).
The table below shows the monthly expenses in 2014.

In 2005 (before they got married), Mary bought this house for $207,000, where they lived until 2013. The house was with 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms. nodes, a dining room, a living room, a washing room, and a total area of about 240 sq. m. (plus a basement of 500 sq. m. and a garage for two cars).
In 2013, shortly before the birth of their third child, the family decided they needed a bigger house. They bought a 1 acre (40 acres) plot of land for $62,000 and built themselves this house in the suburbs, spending about $360,000 on construction. The money for the construction of the house was taken in a mortgage. The new house is slightly more spacious, 300 sq. meters of living space, 4 bedrooms, 2 and a half bathrooms, basement, garage for 2 cars. Real estate taxes for this house are about 12 thousand a year. nine0028
And here is the photos of the interior of a typical house in their area:
