Brandon Sanderson is an American fantasy author. The author himself describes his interest in reading and writing: “It all started in high school. Until then, I hadn’t read anything in the fantasy genre, although I did read a lot in elementary school. My favorite books were from The Three Investigators The Hardy Boys” (famous American detective-adventure series for boys, published from 1927 to 1979; several hundred books were printed in total) . Well, as I got older, they tried to let me read other books, mostly realist literature, from which I became bored to the point of yawning. Then I had a wonderful English teacher—how ironic, her name was Mrs. Reeder—who told me that I couldn’t keep giving lectures in class about books I had read that were four grades below my level. Instead, she gave me her copy of Dragonbane by Barbara Hambley. This was the beginning of the end for me! The book struck me: I did not suspect that such things existed. The book captured my imagination like no other before. I read all the books in the library that had the word “dragon” in the title and quickly moved to the bookstore, where I started buying up every fantasy book I could get my hands on. I still remember when Tad Williams’ Dragonbone Throne and Robert Jordan’s Eye of the World came out in paperback. Both books instantly “hooked” me as a reader, and their authors became my favorite writers. I went to college to study biochemistry, but it only took me about a year to realize that I had chosen the wrong major. In 2005, Tor Books published Brandon Sanderson’s debut book, an out-of-cycle fantasy novel Elantris (published in Russia under the title City of the Gods), about a beautiful city from which magic has gone. It was written at 1999, when the author studied for a bachelor’s degree. Following its release, Sanderson was nominated for the 2006 John W. Campbell Award, honoring the best debut writers. The author states that at present he has no plans to continue this book, but even if he ever took it up, his heroes would be several minor characters of Elantris, and the events described would take place ten years after the completion of the first book . “I always wanted my first novel to be off-cycle because I thought that was the best way to introduce myself to readers. Sanderson’s next novel, Ashes and Steel, was published in the summer of 2006 by the same Tor Books. Brandon wrote it after a contract, so it was Sanderson’s first book that he knew would be published. She begins the Mistborn fantasy trilogy. The author says again: “The Mistborn cycle was born from two ideas. First, I watched Ocean’s Eleven and realized that some of my favorite films such as Sneakers, The Italian Job are at the center of Job) is a team of professional thieves who pull off incredible stunts. Thus, Mistborn takes place in a world where the dark lord has won. A thousand years ago, a prophecy-foretold hero rose up to fight against the power of evil and was humiliatingly defeated. Now, a millennium later, our little band of thieves is vexed. The prophecies did not come true, and the world became a gloomy place where ashes fall from the sky, and most of humanity is enslaved. Our heroes, led by a charismatic man endowed with certain powers, decided that they would overthrow the dark lord in their own way: by stealing all his money and outbidding his own armies. At the end of the summer of 2007, the second volume of the cycle, The Source of Exaltation, appeared, and at the beginning of the following year, the final part of the trilogy, Hero of the Ages, came out. Also in the fall of 2007, Scholastic Books published another Sanderson novel, Alcatraz and the Sands of Rashid, which opened a cycle aimed at a teenage audience. In the future, the author’s work can be divided into two major areas: this is an epic fantasy, in particular, Sanderson is known for having completed the Wheel of Time cycle, which is significant for the genre, and work on teenage fiction and fantasy: the Avengers, Alcatraz, Rhythmatist.” Almost two dozen novels and short stories have been written in various genres, both supplementing already published novels and completely independent. In 2010, one of the author’s most important novels, The Doomed Kingdom, was published, which served as the basis for a new, large-scale epic, Stormlight Treasury, which is planned for ten volumes. There, Brandon studied English literature and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 2000, and a Master of Arts degree in creative writing in 2005. What annoys me the most is when you sort through the books on the shelf, looking for some new author to try, and everywhere you stumble upon “the first volume of such and such a series” or “the first book of such and such a cycle”. Without knowing the author, I don’t want to get bogged down in a trilogy (especially not yet finished) without being sure the author can tell a good story. So that’s why I’m not planning on writing a sequel to Elantris right now. I will not say that this will never happen, but, in any case, not in the near future.
I wondered why no one did this in fantasy. So I created a system of magic from sixteen specialized parts and a team of secret rogue virtuosos, each of whom is an expert in one or more aspects of the magic system. The second idea came from the mass of fantasy novels I read when I was younger. It seemed to me that too many of them were stories about a young peasant who left home to fight some powerful dark lord. I asked myself what if… well, the dark lord had won. What if he slapped the little villager, as he probably should have done in all these stories?
Of course, they are drawn into the events much more than they expected, because the story that happened a thousand years ago is actually not as simple as everyone believes.
