What to do if a child goes to kindergarten and cries at night

Many parents do not even suspect that their behavior does not calm the child, but on the contrary, makes him even more nervous.

They begin to coax their screaming child, and they do it extremely hesitantly. The child feels their anxiety and concern and begins to sob even louder. It is not necessary to arrange a farewell forever from an ordinary action. You just go to work and leave the baby in kindergarten for a while, so treat this as a simple and mundane action. The child will feel your confidence, stop panicking and worrying neurosis after kindergarten . Many educators and other parents advise to leave the group slowly, while the child’s attention is distracted by something. You should never do this!

The child must know exactly how long you leave him in the kindergarten, and be able to say goodbye to you. Come up with your own ritual. For example, blow him a kiss from the street, which he must catch and calmly leave with him in the group. Explain that everyone has their own work – you go to the office, and he goes to kindergarten, and in the evening you meet and share your impressions, tell how the day went. At home, ask the child to show what new he has learned, maybe cut, make applications or sculpt from plasticine. Let him “teach” you this action. Create for him the perception of the kindergarten as a place where he can communicate, play with peers and learn something new. nine0003

Some children get used to kindergarten very quickly. Literally on the second or third day, they themselves want to stay in the kindergarten for the whole day. Parents are happy, the child is cheerful and calm. However, things can change in two or three weeks. The child begins to act up in the morning, comes up with a lot of excuses not to go to kindergarten, says that he did not get enough sleep, that something hurts him, or simply asks to stay at home. Some babies have night tantrums after kindergarten, when they go into uncontrollable crying for 10-15 minutes, sometimes without even waking up. First of all, stressful situations for a child affect sleep and appetite. Parents should be alerted to manifestations of aggression, capriciousness, hyperactivity or, conversely, passivity, loss of appetite and drowsiness that are atypical for a child. It happens that a child has strong self-control, he tries not to show his parents his concern and anxiety, but at night he still cries. nine0011 All these symptoms indicate maladaptation to kindergarten and require an immediate solution to the problem.

Stress in a child after kindergarten. What to do?

Atypical behavior of the child, night tantrums, stress after attending kindergarten indicate that adaptation is not taking place. How can you help your child adjust to kindergarten?

  1. If you’re not on a tight schedule, or if someone at home can be with the baby, try an individual visitation schedule. For example, give your child an extra day off on Wednesday or a couple of days a week leave him in the garden only until lunch. nine0034
  2. Give your child a vacation, especially if he has recently started attending kindergarten. The schedule can be like this at first: we go for 2 weeks, we rest for 3-4 days, later you can increase the time spent in kindergarten: we go for 2 months, we have a week of rest. Focus on the condition of the child. Usually, children’s behavior is clearly visible when they begin to accumulate fatigue, and they need to rest. If you do not take a break in time, fatigue will lead to a decrease in immunity and to some kind of acute respiratory viral infection or acute respiratory disease, and you will spend the same week or two at home, but not relaxing on vacation, but actively being treated. nine0034
  3. A half-hour bath with chamomile or aromatic oils is good for relaxing after visiting the kindergarten and washes away all the worries of the day.
  4. After returning home, having completed all the relaxation rituals, ask the child about the events in the kindergarten. Listen carefully, learn about his feelings and attitude to different situations, give advice.
  5. Set aside space for his kindergarten crafts and drawings and keep admiring the skills he has learned in kindergarten. nine0034
  6. Let your little one take their favorite plush toy with them. Buy the same pajamas for home and kindergarten, so the child will feel more confident and better, because a piece of the house remains with him.
  7. It is better to teach a child to use a potty and self-care before visiting a kindergarten. This way he avoids additional stress.
  8. Getting used to kindergarten should not coincide with other important events in the child’s life (moving, moving to a separate room, etc.), especially for children under 3 years old. In no case should a child be sent to kindergarten after the appearance of a younger brother or sister, otherwise he will feel betrayed, replaced by a new child. nine0034
  9. In difficult situations, use fairy tales. Let the forest animals, supermen or spiderman try to cope with the problem that your child faced in the kindergarten.
  10. When leaving a child in the kindergarten, always say when you will come for him: in the evening, after dinner or after sleep. And try to keep your promises.
  11. A child in kindergarten has to learn to restrain emotions, so let them splash out after. Play or draw with your baby, some kids need some time just to sit in their mother’s arms, feel loved and protected. nine0034
  12. In the evening, when you pick up your child from kindergarten, do not let him sit in front of the TV or computer. The child needs relaxation, and these activities, on the contrary, are exciting. Of course, you can watch a cartoon, but a short one, while hugging together. The child needs tactile contact.

A child urinates in kindergarten – what to do?

When potty training is over, parents exhale: no more wet sheets and pantyhose. But sometimes all this appears again when the child goes to kindergarten. Why? And what to do with it? The child and family psychologist, game therapist Olga Khlopova answers. nine0003

Question. The child went to kindergarten. At that time, everything was already fine with his potty, no “wet nights”, but some time after he started going to the garden, he began to write again. At first, only in kindergarten, during daytime sleep, and then at home, at night. Why is this happening and what can be done about it?

Answer. Such a regression, a rollback in a child is generally acceptable. This is a temporary phenomenon, a kind of reaction to the process of adaptation. The garden is a global event in the life of a child. And the child is changing there. Some children are calm and comfortable in the system of structured activities, while others begin to feel powerless. nine0003

It’s completely natural. So resuming potty stories is also perfectly normal. It’s just a reaction to the accumulated tension. To control the process of urination, the nervous system must have a resource, but it can be depleted due to constant stress.

Even when we adults are tense, we can’t always tell if we want to go to the toilet. Remember yourself in stressful situations: you can only realize in the evening that you haven’t even had breakfast yet or that you haven’t gone to the bathroom since morning. nine0003

But it is important to understand: what exactly causes such tension? If we know for sure that kindergarten is good, that there is a supportive environment, that the child is interested and safe there, then our task is to help him cope with stress due to adaptation.

What can be done?

  • Ask teachers to observe which situations in kindergarten cause a child to feel stressed. Maybe it’s eating, or going to bed, or conflicts over toys. nine0034
  • Agree to arrange a day off from kindergarten once a week. If you see that the child is at the limit of his abilities, try to find a way to at least occasionally give him such a break. From the point of view of adults, kindergarten is a heavenly place. But for a child, this is hard work: there are many children, new adults, new rules and principles to follow. And all this requires an incredible amount of energy and mental costs.
  • Try to pick up the child early. There are children who simply get tired of a large number of people, activities, impressions very quickly. And they need a reboot – as soon as possible. nine0034

How to help your child get rid of stress

Consider: what helps your child to relax? Embrace? Massage? Someone just needs to be stroked, and someone, on the contrary, needs to be squeezed harder. Try not to overwork your child with extra activities after kindergarten. It is better to replace the pool with a bathtub, and it is better to exclude too dynamic cartoons at all: they greatly deplete the nervous system.

Create a relaxing environment at home in the evening. Turn off the lights early, or at least dim the lights, don’t invite your friends over, and try to replace walks on the playground with chasing with a quiet walk in the park. nine0003

It can be said that the task of parents is to create some kind of external regulation for a child experiencing excessive stress. He himself is not yet capable of doing this. So we are looking for sources of tension, minimizing them and helping the child to relax.
