The owner of a Mesquite day care told police she gave children Tylenol “to make her job easier” and kept them strapped in car seats, some tied by their neck, so they would be still, according to police documents.

Rebecca Anderson, 60, has been charged with nine counts of endangering a child and one count of injury to a child and is being held in the Dallas County Jail. Bail has been set at $55,000.
Mesquite police were tipped Friday to possible child abuse at Becky’s Child Day Care, a business Anderson operated out of her home in the 4300 block of Tamarix Court.
A man whose 6-month-old son was being cared for by Anderson went to police after reviewing footage captured on a small camera he had attached to the infant’s car seat the day before. Anderson was recorded yanking the baby out of the seat by his ankle and feeding him an “unknown substance” with a plastic syringe, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.
The video also reportedly shows Anderson lifting up the baby by his bib.
When police searched the day care, they found three children in a bedroom closet and at least one in a bathroom. Others were lying on the floor. The lights were off and the doors were shut, the affidavit stated.
The children were strapped into plastic car seats, some of which had the padding removed, police said. Several had to be cut free because they had “cotton shoelace-like ligatures” tied around their necks and secured to the back of the seats, according to the affidavit.
Six boys and three girls — whose ages have not been released — were found in the home.
Police encouraged their parents to have them checked at a hospital.
Anderson, after initially denying giving the children medication, later admitted that she probably gave them all Tylenol “to make them stop crying and to make her job easier,” according to police documents.
She told police she regularly left the children in the car seats for at least seven hours a day but acknowledged the dangers of doing so.
She admitted to tying the ligatures to limit the kids from moving and prevent them from getting out of the seats.
Police said Saturday that the day care had been shut down.
Neighbor Maria Cuellar said she was shocked to learn that her friend of five years had been arrested and accused of child abuse.
Anderson had always been motherly with Cuellar’s children, eating Thanksgiving dinner together and salsa dancing with the family, Cuellar said.
She said she’s struggling to understand the accusations against her friend, who refused to see Cuellar when she tried to visit Anderson in jail Sunday.
“Now I know why she didn’t want to see my face,” Cuellar said. “She just wasn’t thinking, I guess. … But if my kids were there I’d be so upset.”
Cuellar said that she sometimes saw Anderson alone in the front yard during the day but that the day care provider darted back inside to the children once she noticed Cuellar.
Cuellar wasn’t often inside Anderson’s home, but she remembered it as clean and full of toys.
“It was her everything,” Cuellar said. “That house and those kids.”
Police Lt. Joseph Thompson encouraged parents to pay attention to red flags.
“If something doesn’t seem right, don’t dismiss it,” he said. “Go by and check on your kids at random times and verify that they are ok and that the facility is being run appropriately.”
Anderson was issued a state permit in 1989 to operate as a registered child care provider.
In the last three years, Becky’s Child Day Care has been cited once by the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services.
The December 2016 infraction was related to an emergency preparedness plan, according to the state agency’s website.

I want you to imagine for a second that a significant traumatic event happened to you as an adult, and not being able to tell anybody about that. Imagine how scary that is.
Unfortunately, these kids are likely going to suffer separation anxiety. They’re going to have outbursts or incidents like wetting the bed. They’re going to be scared more often than they normally would be. And most likely, you will see separation anxiety as parents bring a sense of comfort. Parents need to make notes of what they see behavioral changes their child experiences because a counselor may not be beneficial at that age just yet.
Parents of older children, meaning age four and up, will need to check for the following signs of abuse such as physical injuries, burns, bruises, scars, and brain injuries. Parents will also want to look for any mental and emotional trauma that might have developed over the years and make sure that the doctor notes it down.
Mental and emotional trauma will have the same symptoms as anybody else would have: tremors, nightmares, wetting the bed, temper tantrums, problems controlling their emotions, fear, and lack of trust.
But mainly, the parents are going to want to be ready to get their children to a counselor, therapist, or psychologist earlier, rather than later. This step is important for getting ahead of the scars the trauma may cause in the future; it will help these children be able to deal with events that happen later in life.

Standifer whistled softly, his eyes glowing with hope.

Standifer showed slight irritation.
“I’ll give you a receipt,” he announced. Why did they take me here in the end? What am I, a sore on mesquite hemp? Is my department an insufficient guarantee? Write this loan down for Insurance and those two siblings. Don’t Statistics prove that Amos Colvin came here when the Mexicans and Rattlesnakes and Comanches were in command of the state, and he fought day and night to make Texas a white man’s country? And can’t the same Statistics prove that Amos Colvin’s daughter was ruined by a bastard who is trying to destroy what you and I and other old Texans bled for? And History? Can’t she testify that Texas has never withheld aid from the suffering and destitute children of those who made it the greatest of the American states? If Statistics and History are not able to confirm the legal rights of the daughter of Amos Colvin, I will demand in the next session of the Legislative Assembly the liquidation of my department. Well, all right, Uncle Frank, give her the money, and I’ll sign the papers in full form, since you say it’s necessary.
And if the governor, or the inspector, or the sweeper, or anyone else decides to kick, then I will turn to the people with this matter and then you will see that every single Texan will sign your papers. nine0003
The Treasurer listened sympathetically, but he was clearly embarrassed. Standifer’s voice grew louder as the flow of his speech erupted, and however commendable the feelings expressed in it, still her words in some way cast a shadow on the competence of the head of one of the more or less important government offices. The clerks began to listen.
“Come on, Standifer,” said the treasurer softly, “you know I would like to help in this matter, but don’t get excited, think for a minute, please. Every cent of the treasury is spent only in accordance with the decree of the Legislative Assembly and issued on the warrant of the inspector. I have no right to dispose of a cent as I please, and neither do you. And your department does not dispose of public funds and does not have administrative powers, it is just an office.
The only way for this lady to get money is for her to write a petition to the Legislative Assembly herself and …
— To hell! Standifer barked and walked away.
The Treasurer called out to him:
“Standifer, I would be happy to contribute a hundred dollars from myself for the basic expenses of Amos Colvin’s daughter,” and he reached for his wallet.
— Don’t, Uncle Frank, — said Standifer more peacefully. “There is no need for that. And she hasn’t asked for anything like that yet. And above all, her business is in my hands. Now I see what a worthless, seedy, shabby office I was called to lead. Influence in it is the same as in a calendar or a registration book in a hotel. But as long as I lead it, we will not drive out the daughters of the Emos Kolvins, but we will try, as far as possible, to expand our powers. The director returned to his office. His face was concentrated and thoughtful.
Before speaking, he opened and closed the lid of the ink bottle on his desk a few times with too much effort.
– Why don’t you divorce him? he suddenly turned to Mrs. Sharpe.
“I don’t have money for this,” she replied.
“Currently, our institution’s financial capabilities are significantly curtailed,” the head of the department informed the visitor quite formally. “According to the statistics, there is an overrun in the bank, you can’t get even a penny out of History. But you’ve come to the right place, ma’am, and we’ll handle your case. So where did you say your husband is now? nine0003
– He was in San Antonio yesterday. He now lives there.
Suddenly, Standifer changed his official tone. He took the tormented little woman’s hands in his and spoke as simply and heartily as he used to do with his comrades on the cowboy trails or at the campfire.

– Still, I could not be mistaken. Your father mentioned your name so often.
So, Amanda, here is your father’s best friend, the head of an influential government agency that will help you get rid of all your misfortunes.
