Motherhood in the Netherlands
Dutch woman Martier van Riet, HR manager and mother of a three-year-old daughter and an eight-month-old son, shared her experience with www.slate.com on how to successfully combine work, pregnancy and raising children.
About work schedule
Both my husband and I work 32 hours a week with one day off. We have flexible schedules and can work from home. We also work evenings and weekends if our next business day starts later. We are not allowed to hire sick children. In this case, the children stay at home. nine0005
About kindergartens and benefits
Our children go to kindergarten three times a week. We receive monthly compensation from the state, which depends on our income, working hours and the number of days the children attend kindergarten. By the way, all children’s institutions must be officially registered so that parents have the right to financial compensation. For a three-day visit, we pay 1,000 euros per child per month. If you conclude a contract for a five-day mode, it will cost 1660 euros per month. However, as I said, we receive compensation, which directly depends on the level of salary and the number of children. nine0005
Parental help
Despite the fact that the Netherlands is a small country and the cities are very close to each other, the situation on the roads can be really terrible. Our parents live two hours away from us, but the trip is delayed if you get to rush hour. And yet, without their support, we would not have achieved what we have. When our daughter was born three years ago, we asked my mother and mother-in-law to help us with the baby at least one day a week. Thanks to this, I returned to work and worked a full five days. But when our son was born, we decided that I needed to reduce my working hours. nine0005
About nannies
There are several types of nannies in the Netherlands. Some families hire a gastouder (“parent-guest”). She either takes care of the children in the family, or several families bring their babies to her home (usually up to 5 children). This parent-guest must be a qualified professional provided by a certified agency. This service is more expensive than kindergarten. When children start primary school, some families hire a nanny or governess for a few hours a day after school. In another case, children can attend special out-of-school children’s centers, from which compensation can also be received. nine0005
About working dads
Today, many employers are very loyal to working dads. A few years ago it was different. The upbringing of children was perceived exclusively as a female prerogative. And today, young parents divide the function of raising their children in half. In our kindergarten you can meet both mothers and many fathers bringing their kids.
Maternity leave and sexism
Mothers in the Netherlands can go on paid leave at 36 weeks pregnant. You can’t work for six weeks after the birth of your baby. By the way, at the same time, mothers receive vacation pay in full for 12 weeks. But dads get two paid days off. Both parents can also take unpaid leave for up to 26 weeks in total. However, there are some conditions. nine0005
For example, you must have worked for your employer for at least a year. And although such leave is unpaid, some employers can pay up to 60% of wages. Because of this, some fathers work less when they have children. Those who work in the public sector are especially lucky. But in the private sector, the corporate culture can sometimes be old-fashioned and even prone to sexist sentiments. Everything depends on the company. I work for a consulting firm. On the one hand, there are many men here, on the other hand, there are a lot of young people who share my values. nine0005
What still amazes me are the questions to pregnant women: “Will you cut your working hours?” or “Will you stop working when the baby is born?” Men are asked a different question: “Are you going to work full time?” And if he says “no”, the answer is: “Well, yes, you are modern.” When I was pregnant, I was asked if I was going to cut my work week down to four days. When I answered no, there was surprise, and then another question: “Yes? Then, it turns out, up to three days? nine0005

Update at the end of 2022
Ukrainians received the right to a longer stay in the Netherlands
The Temporary Protection Directive has been extended until 4 March 2024. This decision was made by the European Commission. This means that even if you have a permanent residence permit or a residence permit in Ukraine, you have the right to stay in the Netherlands for another year.
Any person covered by the Temporary Protection Directive is entitled to: asylum, health care, education (for minors) and the opportunity to work. It can be extended again for a period of one year. Temporary protection ends when the maximum period expires or a safe return to Ukraine becomes possible. nine0005
Issuance of proof of residence stickers after November 1, 2022
Proof of residence stickers are currently issued at three locations in the Netherlands. This sticker shows that you are covered by the directive. After November 1, this process will continue from a fixed location in Amsterdam. For example, refugees arriving in the Netherlands after October 31, 2022 can come here by appointment to receive a sticker on their residence document. Children over the age of fourteen can also come here for a sticker. nine0005
Update for July 1, 2022
Many people were waiting for this date: they said that from July 1, they might be reviewing some conditions for temporarily resettled Ukrainians, or refugees, or Ukrainians in the status of temporary protection (the last name is the most accurate, the other two are more colloquial)
It was, for example, the almost possible abolition of benefits or that the country would be closed to refugees.
In fact, no major changes, especially for the worse, have occurred. nine0005
- The Netherlands still accepts Ukrainians and gives temporary protection status
- Benefits remain the same
- Positive changes have taken place in the issue of health insurance.
- Employed mothers with children may apply for the allowance for the child (children)
- The IND immigration department has begun actively inserting stickers needed to travel outside the Netherlands, including to Ukraine.
You will find constant updates on this topic on the official website created in the Netherlands for Ukrainians
You have reached the Netherlands. Very briefly, only the most important:
- Decide where you will live . This is living either in a camp, in a shelter, or with private individuals, volunteers, host families, offering shelter to Ukrainians for free.
- In order to be immediately taken to the refugee reception center, declare yourself to any official (for example, a policeman) or Red Cross volunteer, who, as a rule, meet Ukrainians on the platforms of train stations in large cities (Amsterdam, Utrecht, Rottterdam, The Hague, Eindhoven , Maastricht). At the train station or airport – go to the police or station worker. nine0046
- Refugee reception centers are large transit points. From there, as a rule, in 1-4 days you will be distributed to a shelter, a camp, a shelter.
- Alternative: to live with volunteers, individuals who offer their housing for free to refugees. How to find it ? You can start your search already on your way to the Netherlands on the sites mentioned below. Or you can use the time you have at the Refugee Reception Center to find accommodation with a volunteer. In any case, you can always move from the Center or shelter to the volunteer and vice versa. nine0046
- Now the situation is such that both volunteers and the state have less housing. To find it, you have to make more efforts and the search may take longer. Perhaps the best solution at the moment is to settle in a refugee reception center, from there to a shelter, but at the same time look for housing from volunteers.
How to find free housing from volunteers: websites and Facebook groups
Websites:
Individuals offer their housing for free, you choose
- Contact them yourself
- Answer quickly, within 1-2 days
- You can arrange to be met
- Ask how long you are ready to receive. Good answer: “Until it’s all over”
host4ukraine.com
Website refugeehome.nl
An initiative of the government and several large charitable organizations
- Reliably and for a long time
- Long wait, from several weeks
Does the state still have places for Ukrainian refugees in the Netherlands?
Yes, there is. Here, on the state website of the country, you can track the statistics.
Pros and cons of settling in a camp, in a shelter, in a shelter:
- You cannot choose where you will be placed. No locality, no type of camp. Every time it’s a lottery. If you heard from someone that he was successfully resettled, this does not mean that you will be lucky.
- What could it be? If you’re lucky – a hotel, a cruise ship, an empty holiday home. With less luck – an empty office building, the building of the former fire station, an empty prison building, a school. nine0046
- Everything is organized for you: meals, internet connection, medical care, utilities.
- You will be together with compatriots
- You will not be left on the street, and if the municipality ends the contract with your current place of residence, you will be found in advance of another
Pros and cons of living with a volunteer, with a host family:
- You choose where you will live
- Volunteer host families make your first time in a foreign country much easier. As a rule, they help you register with the municipality, show you how to use public transport, find distribution centers for you, language courses, schools for children
- Big minus: volunteers have no obligations to you. They may at any time declare that their circumstances have changed and that you can no longer stay with them. Already now this happens quite often, in which case the refugees themselves have to start the whole search process over again, which can lead to additional stress. In addition, the number of available housing for refugees is declining, and you may be placed in worse conditions than you would have received if you had chosen the camp right away. nine0046
- Register at the municipality and get a BSN number. The sooner you do this, the sooner you will start receiving benefits. If you have settled in a shelter, registration will be arranged for you. If you are staying with a private person, upon arrival you need to register with the municipality (gemeente) in order to obtain a BSN number giving access to public services
Temporary protection status: housing, education for children, allowance, work permit
On March 3, the European Union adopted a “historic”, as it is already called, decision: Ukrainians receive a special status in the countries of the European Union for the year . It is called temporary protection status. In accordance with this decision, Ukrainian refugees will be able to work, study, receive social and medical protection. And children will be able to go to kindergarten and school here. In Dutch, this status is called Tijdelijke beschermingsrichtlijn (status of temporary protection)
- No, it’s not necessary, and it’s impossible. The authorities have declared a moratorium for 6 months on the request for refugee status and any action on it. The status of a Ukrainian is the status of a person under temporary protection.
From June 1 – free travel for Ukrainians in the Netherlands by train – upon arrival in the country upon presentation of an identity card for the first 24 hours, the rest of the transport is paid.
You are traveling with a pet, what should you do?
- Ukrainians leave the country in a hurry, and therefore they do not have the opportunity to comply with all the necessary rules for the transport of animals. Realizing this, all EU member states declared a less strict attitude towards refugees from Ukraine and their pets. nine0046
- This is what the official information says:
- If you are traveling with pets, it is important that you take your pet to the veterinary clinic upon arrival. This visit is free of charge and includes a general examination of the animal and the necessary vaccinations .
