20 children shot at American school | Articles

Shooting in the US city of Newtown (Connecticut) has become the bloodiest tragedy in recent years in a country that is actually accustomed to almost weekly shootings in schools, shopping centers, universities. However, the main thing in this incident was not even an unprecedented number of victims – 27 people – but the fact that 20 of them were children, for the most part, aged 5 to 10 years. On Friday, December 14, the whole country mourned the dead, even President Barack Obama, who made a special statement at the White House, wept.

Events in Newtown developed according to the usual scenario for modern America – a previously unknown young man, dressed in black trousers and a jacket, armed with a rifle and three pistols, entered the school building in the morning and opened indiscriminate fire on students. Since there was a kindergarten at the school, very young children fell under the bullets of the criminal. According to various reports, the attacker walked along the corridors of the school and shot children and teachers from half an hour to an hour. Around 9.30 local time, eyewitnesses called the police and several patrols arrived at the school. The police did not have time to detain the attacker – he committed suicide and was found in one of the school corridors.

The gunman was 20-year-old Adam Lanza. Nothing is known about him yet, except that, having come to school, he first of all began to look for his mother, who worked as a teacher in a kindergarten. Finding her, he shot the woman in front of the children. The media reported that in the morning, before going to school, he killed his own father at home, but then the FBI denied these reports, saying that he was interrogating the parent. The brother of the suspect was also detained, the investigators wanted to accuse him of complicity, but their suspicions were not confirmed.

At present, neither the criminal’s motives nor what could become a “trigger” for his act are known. The police do not give details of the investigation, saying only that this case “should be carefully studied before any information becomes public.”

This case is very similar to two other high-profile incidents that occurred this year: in July, a 24-year-old attacker shot 12 people and injured 38 people in a cinema in Aurora, Colorado, and in August, a 40-year-old former soldier killed six Sikh worshipers Temple at Oak Ridge, Wisconsin. The most bloody incident was the shooting at Virginia Tech University in 2007, when one of the students shot 32 people and then committed suicide.

In all these cases, the criminals acted according to the same scheme – before the attack, they armed themselves with almost all available weapons and, dressed in black trousers and jackets, went to shoot people in cold blood. Moreover, in all cases, the attackers fired from weapons legally acquired and officially registered in their names. Experts and the media do not hide the fact that the reason for such frequent relapses in American society lies precisely in the availability of firearms. Residents of the country are free to buy and carry weapons. At the same time, some states allow you to buy any of its types without restrictions, including combat rifles, machine guns and even machine guns.

The issue of gun availability came up during the presidential election campaign when the public discussed the tragedy in Aurora. However, at that time both Obama and his rival Mitt Romney only suspended the race for a while, but refused to include in their election programs the theses about tightening control over the circulation of weapons. Alas, even now, even after the children have died, the US authorities are doing everything to delay the solution of a long overdue and acute problem.

Speaking at the White House after media reports of the death of 27 people in Connecticut, Obama was as sincere as ever. After saying that the country was going into mourning for four days, the president noted that he was also a father, and most of the dead were children 5-10 years old. At that moment, tears rolled down Obama’s cheeks, his voice trembled, and the leader faltered, bowing his head and hiding his eyes. He ended his short speech with great difficulty, and it was noticeable what efforts it cost him.

Obama was able to find the words that were expected from him: “In our country, this happens too often. We must put aside all inter-party differences and, united, do everything to prevent a recurrence of this.”

The press service of the White House corrected the President’s words. Jay Carney, the press secretary of the head of state, told Izvestia: “Yes, this is an important problem that needs to be addressed . .. But this is not a question of today or even tomorrow.”

The US National Security Council, where Izvestia also asked for comment on what measures would be taken to avoid the recurrence of such tragedies, noted that Obama instructed the FBI to establish the causes of the incident and, based on the data received, prepare a report, the content of which perhaps some guidance will be given.

At the same time, the administration continues to evade answering questions about when exactly the president will begin to take steps to tighten gun control and what exactly those steps will be. At the same time, the Congress is sure that it is not worth talking about the restriction on the possession of weapons – this issue is supposedly too sensitive for Americans, and, therefore, shootings in schools and universities will not soon become a thing of the past.

– You will find that there are more supporters of gun ownership than opponents. These people are our voters, and in such a situation we can only make a decision in consultation with them.
