Virginia, USA – travel guide Planet of Hotels

Richmond is the state capital. This is a quite modern city – with a bit boring skyscrapers and wide streets, dynamic and businesslike. But at the same time, Richmond is very beautiful. Here you will find several interesting monuments and architectural monuments. For example, the building of the local Capitol was designed by one of the presidents, Thomas Jefferson. In Richmond, you should definitely visit the Museum of Fine Arts, with a very diverse collection. Among other things, there is the largest collection of Faberge eggs outside of Russia.
Also of interest are the Confederate Museum, the Poe Museum, the Science Museum and the Children’s Museum. Richmond is also a very green city. There are four dozen parks with a total area of more than 600 hectares, in which an incredible number of squirrels live.

Williamsburg was once the state capital. Now the town, in fact, is an open-air museum. There are more than seven dozen buildings of the XVIII century – preserved or reconstructed. Particularly noteworthy are the parish church built in 1715, the governor’s manor and the building of the city Capitol, over which the flag of the East India Campaign flutters. However, the whole city looks fabulous.

Alexandria is located on the left bank of the Potomac River, 9km from the capital of the country. The main attraction of the city is the George Washington Masonic Memorial. On the first two floors of the temple-museum, accessible to the public, there is an exposition, which, among other things, presents personal belongings of Washington. In the old part of the city, many old buildings have been preserved. It is also worth taking a look at the old port, at the local town hall, at the church, the parishioner of which was the first president of the United States, and at the station building, as if transferred by a time machine from the 19th century.

Virginia Beach is the state’s largest city (population over 450,000). It is located on the Atlantic coast and is, first of all, a beach resort. According to the Guinness book, here is the longest public beach on the planet – about 60 km. In addition, the city has a lot of shops, restaurants, casinos, clubs, various attractions, green areas, golf courses, etc. But keep in mind that there are more than 10 military facilities near the city, including the US Atlantic Fleet base in neighboring Norfolk. Of the attractions, it is worth noting the aquarium, the water park, the old lighthouse and, of course, the huge embankment.

Norfolk. The main thing here is a huge naval base. But for tourists in this city there is something interesting. For example, the Nauticus Maritime Museum and the battleship Wisconsin included in its exposition. The Chrysler Museum of Art deserves the highest praise. He is famous, first of all, for his glassware. But in his collection there is also a wonderful painting – Rubens, Matisse, Cezanne, Manet. And in Norfolk there is an excellent zoo and just a wonderful, very picturesque botanical garden.

Charlottesville. Nice, small town, known primarily for the fact that here is the University of Virginia, which was founded by Jefferson. There are several 18th century buildings in the city. The most interesting are the complex of university buildings and the estate of the third US president (Monticello), located 2 km from Charlottesville.

Virginia [2][3][4], also Virginia [3][5] (Commonwealth of Virginia) is a state[6] in the eastern United States, one of the so-called South Atlantic states, located between the Atlantic coast and the Appalachians. The geography and climate of Virginia are shaped by the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Chesapeake Bay, which are home to much of the state’s flora and fauna. It is the 10th state in the state. Population – 8,654,542 people (2020; 12th in the US)[1], 36% of them live in the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area.

Virginia’s history begins with the settlement of several indigenous peoples of North America, including the Powhatan. In 1607 the London Company established the Virginia Colony as the first permanent English colony in the New World. The nickname of the state of Virginia, “The Old Dominion”, is a reference to this status. Slave labor and land acquired from deported native tribes fueled the colony’s growing economy through plantations, but also fueled conflict both within and outside Virginia. Virginia was one of the Thirteen Colonies during the American Revolution, becoming part of the United States in 1776. The state was internally split as a result of the American Civil War in 1861, when the government of Virginia in Richmond joined the Confederacy while many of the state’s western counties remained loyal to the Union, which was one of the reasons for the formation of the state of West Virginia in 1863. Although the state was dominated by one party for almost a century after the Reconstruction of the South, both Republicans and Democrats are competitive in present-day Virginia.

The legislature of the state of Virginia is the Virginia General Assembly, which was created in July 1619, making it the oldest active legislature in North America[7]. It consists of a 40-member Senate and a 100-member House of Delegates. The state government is unique in how it treats cities and counties equally, manages local roads, and prohibits governors from running for office. The economy of Virginia has many sectors: agriculture is developed in the Shenandoah Valley; high-tech manufacturing and supply for federal agencies, including the headquarters of the US Department of Defense and the Central Intelligence Agency in Northern Virginia, as well as military installations on Hampton Roads, the site of the region’s main seaport.

Capital – Richmond, largest city – Virginia Beach, other large cities – Alexandria, Lynchburg, Norfolk, Newport News, Portsmouth, Roanoke, Hampton, Chesapeake. Administratively, Virginia is divided into 95 districts and 38 “independent cities” [en] , which are not included in any district and are completely independent administrative-territorial units of the second level[8][9].
