How Gym Child Care Programs Support Mixed Schedules

Gyms across the U.S. are impacting their communities and their incomes by adapting child care services to support schools and families struggling with changes related to with COVID-19.

  • October 30, 2020

School is back in class and, along with everything else, it looks different this year. Since COVID-19changes the way we communicate and work, it also changes the way children learn and interact. Many schools are moving to fully remote learning or hybrid models designed to minimize the number of students in class at any one time. No one knows what the future holds for us, especially with the holidays and the possibility of more trips and transfers.

The community aspect of health clubs has always been a major strength, and health clubs are stepping forward to help meet the challenges of childcare and supplementary education during the pandemic. These child care programs not only help to alleviate a pressing problem in the communities, but also generate additional income for the clubs. Remote and hybrid schooling models have left many parents looking for a solution to reduced school hours, and many health clubs are in a unique position to adapt and offer the solutions that families sorely need.

Camps and Afterschool Programs

Longfellow Health Clubs, located in Wayland and Natick, Massachusetts, have been offering summer camps for children in the Greater Boston area for over 35 years, growing into one of New England’s largest day camps. This summer, Longfellow was able to organize camp programs, which in itself is a great success during the pandemic.

Karen Mahoney, director of children’s programs at the Wayland Center, attributes this to the adoption of strict hygiene protocols and the importance of open dialogue in cooperating with parents.

“We made sure to organize the learning process, because everyone has to learn,” she says. “In addition to wearing masks, there is a thorough cleaning of the premises each evening, as well as a strict daily health screening. All staff were required to be tested before returning to work. Parents receive constant emails to keep up to date with all updates, and we are always looking for feedback, to improve efficiency and safety.

Children are divided into small groups, in which there are no more than 13 people, and all classes are held within the group. Coaches have also adapted, moving towards activities that have less contact and more distance.

Mahoney also stresses the importance of adapting to the needs of your community and personalizing to families whenever possible. Due to high demand, Longfellow expanded the camp program for the school year, adding additional educational programs such as a guided learning center and home classes. Children from four different cities in the region participate in the programs, and you can choose from a full day or an exercise-oriented program starting at 2:00 pm. Breaks include time spent with trainers to add to the fun and encourage an active lifestyle.

“As school starts again in September, we have taken into account the wishes of parents about what is needed in terms of helping the school. We emphasize flexibility and the need to make commitments for only one month. We do not want parents to feel trapped , because now everything is so fleeting, “says Mahoney.

“As school starts again in September, we have taken into account the wishes of parents about what is needed in terms of helping the school. We emphasize flexibility and the need to make commitments for only one month. We do not want parents to feel trap, because now everything is so changeable.

Karen Mahoney, Director of Children’s Programs

Longfellow Health Clubs – Wayland, Massachusetts

The Adirondack Club, located in Franklin, Massachusetts, also had a successful camp program this summer. Compliance with strict guidelines set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, such as temperature checks, has resulted in no outbreaks or cases of COVID-19 at the club. The club already offers an extensive after-school program that partners with local school districts, and this year it has been expanded with a focus on providing more educational content and online learning. Franklin’s school system is now completely retired, making this service critical for parents in the area.

Adirondack Club’s expanded offerings include after school programs, distance learning programs and early childhood education. Programs are held in various classrooms throughout the club, making them an ideal environment for virtual learning while respecting the principles of social distancing. The fact that the club already offered extensive programs made the logistical expansion of services easier. The programs involve mainly full-time teachers, to which student-aged tutors are added. Programs are offered primarily to club members, but subject to availability, they are also available to non-members.

Samantha Miller, director of children’s activities and summer camps at the Adirondacks, stresses that staff commitment is critical to providing a safe environment.

“Staff participation is one of the most important details that is sometimes overlooked,” she says. “They are role models in these programs and children notice if they are not enthusiastic about wearing a mask or washing their hands regularly.”

Just as an employee is recognized for exemplary performance, it is important to acknowledge the efforts of staff to comply with and promote safety rules set by health authorities.

Adding fun or competition to the equation often does wonders for following the rules, says Miller. “We’ve started adding small contests and prizes to encourage mask wearing, such as rewarding the child who wears the most mask on a given day. We’ve found that this helps make a difficult task more fun and exciting.”

Miller also emphasized an important lesson: patience. “The expanded programs are going really well, but we’ve noticed the importance of asking parents to be patient while the kids adjust and get used to the new routine. A new learning experience can be a bit of a shock, and sometimes it takes a while to adjust to a different schedule and setting.

Collaborating with Education

Operating 24 clubs on nine different campuses in California and Oregon, The Bay Club recognized the need to combine next-generation learning solutions with fitness and wellness programs. In August, they announced a partnership with KinderCare Education, the country’s largest private provider of early childhood and school age education.

“By combining our Champions School Age Education Programs with The Bay Club’s leading active lifestyle programs and world-class sports facilities, we will provide families with peace of mind by providing their children with a safe learning environment that promotes their academic, social and physical development” , says Tom Wyatt, CEO of KinderCare Education, in a press release.

Children are divided into study groups of no more than 12 people and remain with the same teacher and group throughout the school day. Teachers guide students through online learning classes, and Bay Club instructors offer a wide range of active lifestyle programs.

The Bay Club also offers a scholarship program to help families in the area, as noted in a release by President and CEO Matthew Stevens, who said: “In an effort to be part of the solution to create equity in education for children in our communities and as a way to bridge the digital divide “We are proud to announce a new scholarship program through Bay Club Cares. These scholarships will be offered at each of the properties where the program operates.”

A mirror image of club values and mission

Expanded childcare and learning programs not only provide a critical service and provide additional income, but are also a great opportunity to demonstrate to the local community the strength of the club’s values and mission to promote healthy lifestyles. With many youth sports and events canceled or operating at reduced capacity, and with the rise of online learning, some children find it difficult to stay physically active.

Although not available for all clubs, it is worth contacting local educational organizations and school districts to find out if a partnership is possible. Health clubs that offer hybrid programs promote healthier, happier communities and strengthen parental goodwill.

Mahoney explains that when creating or extending software, it’s not just the “how” that matters, but also the “why.”

“Our goal is to make sure that families living in our communities get social time for their children, and we want to be a safe space for that. Nobody wants to feel alone,” she says. “We want to be a link for families and help children develop, and this is our goal.”

Why do graduates choose secondary education?

Secondary education pushed higher. As a study at the Higher School of Economics found out, last year half of ninth grade graduates and every fifth grade 11 graduate chose colleges to continue their education. Why schoolchildren do not want to enter universities and what has changed in the field of vocational training, told MIR 24 TV channel0082 Expert of the Center for Skills Development and Vocational Education of the HSE Institute of Education Alexey Shabalin.

– Until 2014, about 40% of graduates went to secondary specialized educational institutions, now – about 55%. Why is this happening?

Aleksey Shabalin: In modern times, a couple of reasons are usually named as the most basic, but, in fact, if we study this problem in a complex way, it turns out that this is a whole tangle of reasons from the labor market, higher education, increasing the elitism of high school, which in combination lead to an increase in the number of people who leave school and choose college as a place to receive their first post-secondary education.

– How important is the lack of state-funded places in this tangle of reasons?

Aleksey Shabalin: It’s not so much about the lack of state-funded places, but about the reduction in the territorial coverage of universities in the regions. Our colleagues found out that universities have reduced their network. And now, not in every region, not in all its parts, children can enter a university without territorial mobility, in which they also need to invest their money. Therefore, it is sometimes easier to go to college, because there is no university in the place where you live.

– That is, those who say that school graduates have become afraid of not getting the required number of points for entering a university are wrong?

Alexey Shabalin: This is a list of reasons. It is difficult to determine the weight of any one reason. Every family is different. Sometimes the USE, like an exam with high stakes, scares some parents. They are afraid that the child will not pass the exam, even if they invest in tutors. Therefore, some families choose a safer path – go to college. And then over time, having gained experience, go to a university.

In addition, in general, tuition at a university is on average twice as expensive as at a college. We still have to spend money on moving, training with tutors and other items of expenditure. College is much cheaper.

– Are there any college admission statistics? What professions are most often chosen now? What colleges do you choose?

Aleksey Shabalin: We were just considering what specialties applicants want to enter the most. Basically, these are soft specialties with a non-rigid qualification framework or creative ones. For example, it is the IT sector or advertising. That is, these are specialties where the weight of a diploma is lost as a formal signal of your qualifications.

For example, on HeadHunter, fewer jobs among these professions require a diploma to get hired. Therefore, applicants understand that experience is becoming more important than a higher education diploma, so it is easier to invest in some shorter programs.

– So you can say that over the past few years, the idea of young people about a career has changed?

Alexey Shabalin: Yes, the structure of the labor market is changing. And, as a result, the idea of applicants about the most promising areas for them is changing.

– And what is the percentage of those who graduated from secondary specialized vocational education and then go to higher education?

Alexey Shabalin: About 21 percent of specialist program graduates go directly to university immediately after. That is, in fact, they do not enter the labor market, but immediately go to a university.

But in recent years, this percentage has been falling, despite the fact that overall college graduation has been growing. This suggests that this trend is weakening, and the college ceases to be a transit point, after which they immediately go to the university. More and more graduates prefer to work for a while, and after that go to get an education.

And here it is important to understand that there is no opposition – college or university. The college begins to play the role of the first post-secondary education. But, of course, in the future it is logical to get a new qualification. This will help graduates in building a career.

– The leaders of some large enterprises say that there is no one to work at the machine and that the prestige of the profession of workers must be raised. To what extent could it play a role that a person is studying at a secondary school, along with an industrial practice, where he understands that he can work here, and the level of income here will be very good?

Aleksey Shabalin: Not all employers who talk about a shortage of workers are ready to create enough conditions for people to come to them. Because specialists can be in this labor market, but they are not satisfied with the salary provided by the employer. Therefore, they do not go to him, and it seems to him that there is no one.

In this sense, responsible employers negotiate with colleges, and within the framework of dual education, while still in the process of studying, they conclude a contract with the student, according to which he undergoes an internship at his workplace, and after graduation he is employed there. In this sense, the employer cares about his future and tries in advance not only to find students, but also to adapt them to his workplace. This further reduces the cost of their retraining. This is a mutually beneficial process.

– How ready was the education system for such a surge in demand for vocational education and the redistribution of applicants?

Alexey Shabalin: The college system is divided into two main programs. Programs for workers and specialists. Within each, applicants are accepted after the ninth or eleventh grade.

Admission on the basis of nine grades is most often a priority for the regions, because this is a kind of social mission, these children, in principle, have no alternative to go to a university. That is, they have already made a choice, and they are recruited to colleges.

But for those who enter on the basis of eleven classes, the number of places in recent years is actually limited. They have significantly increased the number of applications per seat. If five or six years ago there was actually no competition, today it reaches six people per place.

The percentage of students who study for a fee has reached 56. That is, graduates of the eleventh grade often with good grades in the certificate, who could enter a university, choose between a college and a university, but both there and there they meet high competition. A few people per seat is essential.

– Do you think the increased demand for vocational education will continue in the future?

Alexey Shabalin: The situation with the coronavirus and isolation has greatly exacerbated this problem. And in 2020, the demand for secondary specialized education has significantly jumped. Without that, the already growing trend has become very aggravated.

It seems to me that this trend will continue, but it will not be as radical as it was in 2020, when children were actually closed inside the subject, it was difficult for them to move to another region, to enter, so they entered colleges more.
