Konigsburg – From the archive of Mrs. Basile E. Frankweiler, the most confusing in the world » Page 16 » Online books of all genres to read for free

And tears rolled down her cheeks again.

– If you don’t get wet – how to roar! Remember what you wanted. To run away from home – and to be cozy and beautiful. And everything turned out great. Until the day before yesterday you suddenly needed this heroism.

– Jimmy, understand! This figurine… this is my chance. Our chance! We must solve the riddle.

— What do you think all these people in the museum are doing? They don’t figure it out? Do you think you can do better? And anyway, what are you hoping to find – a tape cassette with the voice of Michelangelo? So that he would say on it: “It was I who sculpted an angel”? Well, excuse me: four hundred and seventy years ago there were no tape recorders!

– I know. But if we solve the mystery, then – do you know how we get back to Greenwich?

— Of course I know! By train, as they left!

– I’m not talking about that. We will return to Greenwich in a different way…

– There is another way – you need to take the subway to 125th Street, and only then transfer to the train.

– Jimmy, I’m talking about myself, not about the road! I, Emma Kincaid, want to come home a different person, just like heroes come back.

– If you want to become a different person, I’ll tell you where to start. For starters, try to forget about heroism.

“Okay,” Emma sniffled. – Will try.

Jimmy was surprised at such complaisance, but did not show it and continued everything in the same businesslike way:

— So what did you say about this riddle of yours?

— Jimmy, I want to find out if this is Michelangelo or not. I can’t explain why. But I feel like I should find out. Find out for sure. I just have to, you know?

Jimmy got up.

– Even if the experts don’t know for sure, then we’ll manage somehow. Everyone go get tickets. We’re going home!

He walked resolutely to the suburban ticket offices, but after walking only a few steps, he returned because Emma did not move. Sighing, Jimmy began to reason with her again:

– Um, why are you always missing something, huh? Evaluation “excellent” you, you see, does not suit you, give you “excellent with a plus.” First you just want to run away from home, and then you want to know everything in the world! You want to be Clara Barton[8], Florence Nightingale[9] and the Maiden of Arlington – and all at once!

“Orleans,” Emma sighed.

She got up and trudged along behind her brother, barely moving her legs. She had never felt so depressed before. And, most importantly, she understood: she couldn’t go home now. It’s impossible. Impossible.

Jimmy and Emma went to the only cash register that didn’t have a “Closed” sign. They lined up behind a man who was buying a red travel ticket, exactly the same as the one they used to come to New York.

“Please,” Jimmy said to the cashier, “we have two half-price tickets to…

“To FARMINGTON, CONNECTICUT,” Emma said loudly.

– To Farmington? Then you have to go to Hartford and then take a bus. ..

Jimmy nodded.

– Wait a minute! he said, and grabbing Emma by the arm, he pulled her aside.

“Mrs. Basil Frankweiler,” whispered Emma.

— What is Mrs. Basile Frankweiler?!

— She lives there. In Farmington.

— So what? hissed Jimmy. “The newspaper says that her house is closed.

– This is her New York house closed. Can you at least not confuse something, at least once in your life?

“If you say that…” Jimmy scowled.

– Okay, okay, I won’t. I won’t say that. Just please, Jimmy, let’s go to Farmington! I really need to know about the angel, can’t you see? I have a hunch that Mrs. Frankweiler will receive us and that she knows the clue.

– I don’t remember that you had premonitions before. Usually you plan everything.

— No, once I already had a premonition.

— When?

– On the night when the figurine was transferred. Remember, I stayed in the toilet – and they didn’t catch me. For some reason, I didn’t leave. It was a premonition! I just didn’t understand it then.

“Okay,” Jimmy sighed. We’re going to Farmington.

He went back to the box office and bought tickets to Hartford.

“I think this is the first time this has happened to you,” Emma said as they waited for the train on the platform.

– What is the “first time”?

– The first time you bought something without even finding out how much it costs.

– And nothing is the first time! Jimmy was outraged.

— And when did this happen? Tell! Emma demanded.

“Now I remember…” Jimmy thought for a minute. “Have I been a miser all my life?”

“Just as long as I can remember you,” Emma replied.

“And you remember me longer than I remember myself,” Jimmy smiled.

– That’s right. You weren’t even born yet, and I was already an older sister.

The train ride was great. A good half of the journey took them through places they had never seen before. Emma’s mood for Hartford was much better than the morning after the ill-fated letter. She regained her usual confidence.

The Hartford station building was on Farmington Avenue, from which Emma concluded that Farmington itself was within easy reach. The question is, why wait for the bus and then twitch all the way, not knowing which stop to get off at? She didn’t consult with Jimmy, but with a wave of her hand, she hailed a taxi and climbed inside. Jimmy had no choice but to follow her.

“Please, Mrs. Basile Frankweiler’s house, Farmington, Connecticut,” she said to the driver, and leaned back in her seat. Finally a taxi!

(And here, Saxonberg, I enter the scene.)

Chapter 9

The taxi drove along a long, wide alley – my alley, leading to my house.

“I wonder,” said Jimmy, “is this highway owned by Mrs. Frankweiler?”

“So this is no longer a highway,” the taxi driver replied. – This is her road, it drives right up to the house. Well, this lady has money, I will report to you! And here is the house itself.

Jimmy whistled:

— Wow! Another museum.

“So much the better,” Emma replied, “we will feel at home.”

Jimmy paid the taxi driver. Emma pulled her brother’s sleeve and whispered:

“Give him a tip!”

Jimmy shrugged and dropped a handful of coins into the driver’s hand. The taxi driver grinned, took off his hat and bowed:

– Thank you, sir!

When the car drove off, Emma asked:

— How much did you give him?

– All I had left.

– Well, that’s stupid! What are we going to go home now?

Jimmy sighed.

– There were only seventeen cents left. You still can’t get home with them. We are now bankrupt. Well, did you take a taxi? Satisfied?

“Not really,” Emma admitted. – With money it was somehow calmer.

– Come on! You yourself wanted adventure, not peace. So up your nose, Lady Emma!

— What kind of lady am I now, since we are bankrupt?

They walked up the wide steps of my front porch and Jimmy called. The doors were opened by Parks, my butler.

“We’d like to see Mrs. Basile Frankweiler,” said Jimmy.

– How to report you?

Emma cleared her throat for courage.

– Emma and James Kincaid.

— One minute, please.

True, they had to stand in the lobby not for one minute, but much longer. Finally, Parkes appeared:

– Mrs. Frankweiler said that she did not know you.

– It’s okay. We would love to meet her! Emma was determined not to give up.

— What is the purpose of your visit? Parks asked. (He always asks this question.)

They looked at each other in bewilderment. Jimmy was found first:

– Please tell Mrs. Basile Frankweiler that we have come to talk about the Italian Renaissance.

This time, Parks disappeared for about ten minutes, no less.

“Follow me,” he said when he returned. “Mistress Frankweiler will receive you in her office.

Jimmy winked at Emma. He had no doubt that the mention of the Italian Renaissance intrigued me.
