Process — Chapel Hill Day Care Center

CHDCC is a twelve-month program that operates on a school year that goes from mid-August to mid-August. Most of our enrollment occurs in August when the kindergarten-bound children leave. At that time, all children move to a new classroom and additional children begin. Most of these spaces are confirmed in the spring and early summer. Once the classrooms are full, additional children are only enrolled if a child leaves the program. 

It is important to the children in the Center to enroll a cross-section of the community. To this end, we include in our budget a line item for families who receive scholarship money through the Department of Social Services, Early Head Start and Child Care Services Association, including UNC scholarship funding. Each year, several spaces in infants, toddlers and two’s are reserved for children enrolled through Early Head Start.  Children of Center staff, siblings of currently enrolled children, and children of employees of UNC-Chapel Hill and UNC Hospital are given priority on the waiting list.  

REGISTRATION AND ENROLLMENT PROCESS

Families interested in enrolling a child are encouraged to schedule a tour with the Director or Assistant Director to see the program in action and talk with us about what you are looking for in an Early Childhood Education program. At this time, the family may fill out a registration form and pay a $50 registration fee to be placed on a waiting list.

When an opening becomes available in the child’s age group, families are notified and given one week to accept or decline.

If the family accepts the space for their child, a security deposit of $1000 is required to confirm enrollment. The deposit is applied to the last month that a child is enrolled in the program. This deposit is refundable only if the child has started at the center and a 60-day notice is provided.

If a space is offered and a family declines to enroll but would like to remain on the waiting list, the registration date will be changed to the date the space was declined. In other words, the application will be moved to the bottom of the waiting list. A space may be declined only once before being removed from the waiting list.

Once a family has accepted and confirmed the space, a start date and a plan to transition the child into the classroom will be established. If the space is available immediately, enrollment must occur within 30 days of its acceptance.

Prior to the child’s first day of attendance, the first month’s tuition and a $200 Activity Fee must be paid and at least one parent/guardian must attend an orientation with the Director or Assistant Director. During this orientation we will ensure that all enrollment forms have been completed, review the parent handbook and discuss the program’s communication avenues. During this meeting, parents/guardians are encouraged to share information about the child and family to help the staff get to know them and to facilitate a smooth transition for their child.

Approach to Learning — Chapel Hill Day Care Center

The Center takes a holistic approach to early childhood education, prioritizing trust-based relationships with caregivers as well as a wide range of activities that promote academic, emotional, physical and social development.

Children are placed in classrooms based on their age and participate in age-appropriate activities. Our Center uses The Creative Curriculum, which is comprehensive, research-based and approved for ages infant through preschool. It includes ongoing assessments and documentation of children’s progress, giving parents information about their children’s learning process.

The Center also gives parents a chance to be actively involved in children’s education through parent-teacher conferences, which occur twice annually and give parents feedback about their children’s progress.

We believe that all activities, especially play, facilitate some form of learning or development, and we view every part of the children’s day as an opportunity to teach them about their world.

The learning philosophy at CHDCC includes focusing on children’s natural curiosity about their world, supporting children in discovering answers to their questions, and encouraging experimentation to find satisfying solutions to daily challenges. We focus on the process of learning rather than the production of correct answers.

Teachers support our children’s learning by:

  • developing a warm, trusting, and responsive relationship with each child

  • sparking children’s interest and curiosity about the world around them

  • encouraging children’s exploration and inquisitiveness

  • guiding children in finding answers to their questions

  • encouraging persistence and flexibility in problem-solving

  • creating an environment that is conducive to taking age appropriate risks,

  • experimenting creatively to solve problems and approach new challenges

Teachers support children’s emotional growth and  development of social skills by:

  • creating a safe environment with clear limits and expectations of behavior

  • following through when children’s behavior is disruptive, unsafe, or unkind

  • allowing children to experience their emotions with a caring adult close by

  • help children learn to identify, differentiate, and label their feelings

  • acknowledging and validating children’s feelings without judgment or dismissal

  • helping children learn to express their emotions in ways that are safe, respectful of others, and effective toward get their needs met

  • supporting the growth of children’s feelings of competence and self confidence

  • promoting a classroom atmosphere of cooperation instead of competition

  • valuing understanding the viewpoints and opinions of others

  • helping children see the effects of their behaviors on others and helping them take responsibility for their behavior by caring for others

UNC Chapel Hill: Future Technologies

Students take one morning and one afternoon elective course. Morning workshops are held five times a week, while afternoon workshops are held three or four times a week. 8 to 16 people per class.

Seminars

Business and Entrepreneurship

In this program, students learn how to start and run a small business (from a small bookstore to a consulting company).

They will learn the basics of business management and how Facebook, Twitter and Crowdfunding can help a startup. The sports business and examples of career opportunities in the sports industry will also be explored.

By the end of the program, students will have developed a plan to start their own small business.

STEM

This program will allow you to be creative in the use of technology. Combine technology, engineering and design. Learn the basics of programming, circuitry, 3d design and 3d printing. Work in teams and create something completely new robot, kinetic art installation, interactive clothing or computerized car. Use TinkerCard to create 3d masterpieces. Use your imagination!

Law

This program provides an understanding of law and society and the role and importance of international law. How law shapes relations between nations, influences foreign policy, and governs relations between non-state actors. Students study international law, human rights, prosecution of international crimes. The course concludes with a controversial war crime review, where critical thinking is put to the test.

Medicine

Interdisciplinary seminar providing students with knowledge about various organisms, the endocrine system, microflora and immune responses.
Covers topics in the field of biotechnology. Students will meet industry scientists to learn how basic research can generate biomedical technologies.

Psychology

This workshop examines behavior through the psychological theories of Freud, Skinner, Maslow, Erickson and Piaget. You will critically justify these theories in the light of your own experiences with intellectual and moral development, sensuality, family and peer relationships, and coping with stress and challenges in everyday life. You will watch films and read relevant articles that provide an applied understanding of developmental psychology. Students explore a wide range of psychological topics including dreams, memory, consciousness, anxiety, body language, gender, and sexuality. You will uncover the history of the subject, examine case histories, learn about various mental disorders and various research methodologies. At the end of the course, students will design their own experiments under the guidance of specialist researchers.

American History at Chapell Hill

Travel to and around Chapel Hill to learn about the rich history of the South. This course will show students various historical sites such as The Gimghoul Castle, Chapel of the Cross, Horace Williams House, Forest Theater, Old Chapel Hill Cemetery and more.

Fine Art Museum

Do you enjoy exploring art museums and discovering new art forms? This workshop will teach you about the visual arts of Chapel Hill. You will visit the North Carolina Museum of Art, the Acland Museum of Art, the Weatherspoon Museum of Art, the Gregg Museum of Art and Design, and the Frank Museum. Additional fee required.

Culture & Cuisine

Take a virtual tour of the world and discover a wide range of food culture right in the center of Chapel Hill. Visit various cafes and restaurants offering different cuisines and learn the culture behind them in the process.

This workshop is designed to introduce students to writing an essay for college admissions. Using personal experience, as well as basic college tips, will help you write a structured and professional college essay.

Leadership and teamwork

Accommodation

The Carmichael Residence Hall is located in the middle of the campus, next to the SRC (student recreation center) and Fetzer (gym). Air-conditioned double rooms are equipped with single beds, desks, chairs and a built-in wardrobe.

Bed linen and bath towels are provided and changed weekly. Wi-Fi is available throughout the campus, and on the ground floor there are student lounges, an entertainment center. In addition, just behind the hostel is the outdoor Kessing pool, as well as an outdoor courtyard and beach volleyball court.

Students receive a Carolina Meal Card and may eat at any dining facility on the Carolina campus. The Carolina dining restaurant offers a wide variety of dishes, including vegetarian, vegan and organic salads.
