What Questions Should I Ask a Daycare Provider?

What ages does Bright Horizons in Los Angeles serve in its daycare program?

Most of our Los Angeles child care centers serve children ages six weeks to six years. Bright Horizons is more than daycare. We have programs with developmentally appropriate curriculum for infants, toddler, preschool and pre-K.

I’ve looked at other daycares in the great Los Angeles area with long waitlists. What if I want to enroll at a Los Angeles Bright Horizons center but space is not available?

You can select and register with up to three Bright Horizons child care locations, including the center in which you are most interested. By registering, you are confirming interest in all three centers. Once registered, we will add you to our waitlist and offer you a space as soon as one becomes available. Our goal is to accommodate families as soon as space allows, and so during the entire process, we will keep in touch with you regarding your status. While waiting for a space to become available at the first-choice location, many families enroll at their second or third choices temporarily until space becomes available at their first-choice centers. Enrolling at another location will not only solve your immediate child care needs, but will provide you priority access to your first preference.

What is the background check process for daycare staff at Bright Horizons Los Angeles child care centers?

Bright Horizons conducts comprehensive background checks on all prospective employees and frequent visitors. In Los Angeles, the state of CA Department of Youth and Families requires background checks for employees of a daycare or licensed child care facility.

Bright Horizons background checks consist of a county criminal record check for the past seven years performed in all counties that a person has lived, worked or attended school. In addition to the county criminal search, a sex offender search, OFAC search, and a social security verification trace are also conducted.

Is it safe to send my child to a Los Angeles daycare or preschool?

Bright Horizons is trusted by parents in Los Angeles, including many doctors and nurses, to care for their children. We’ve partnered with pediatric infectious disease specialist Dr. Kristin Moffitt of Boston Children’s Hospital to implement enhanced safety protocols for all areas including daily health screening, distancing, cleaning, and disinfecting. Our goal is to ensure that all of our health and safety practices in every center are in line with recommendations provided by the CDC and requirements of state and local municipalities. Our Los Angeles centers have the well-being of children, families, and staff at their core.

Do Bright Horizons daycare centers follow state/local requirements for masking and vaccinations?

Where there are additional state or local requirements, for example around vaccination/masking, Bright Horizons also complies with applicable legal requirements in each jurisdiction in which we operate.

Are daycare staff at Bright Horizons in Los Angeles trained in CPR and First Aid?

All Bright Horizons Los Angeles staff are trained regularly in CPR /First Aid and Universal Precautions. You can feel confident that your child is safe and receiving the best care possible while in our care.  Families of children in our care use the to get photos, real-time updates on care, learning, and milestones, and stay up to date on important notifications.

All Bright Horizons Los Angeles staff receive ongoing training, including CPR/First Aid and Universal Precautions. Does Bright Horizons in Los Angeles have baby daycare?

Yes. Most of our locations offer infant care programs for children starting at six-weeks old. We’re happy to schedule a safe, personalized Zoom visit for expectant parents who would like to learn about why Bright Horizons can offer more than a daycare, even for our youngest learners. Bright Horizons in Los Angeles is a great place for babies.

Does Bright Horizons in Los Angeles have a toddler daycare?

Yes. Most of our locations offer toddler programs for children to start to explore independence, language development, and social skills. We’re happy to schedule a safe, personalized Zoom visit for parents who would like to learn about why Bright Horizons can offer more than a daycare. Find out what toddlers learn in our Los Angeles child care programs.

Does Bright Horizons in Los Angeles have a daycare preschool program?

Yes. Most of our locations offer preschool and pre-K programs for children that prepare them for school success. How can I find child care when a Los Angeles daycare center is closed?

Having a sitter or two familiar with your family can be extremely helpful when you need back-up care. With the Sittercity app, you can search for local babysitters and nannies, or post a job detailing your needs, and have interested child care providers reach out to you directly. The Sittercity app has built-in screening tools that give you control to hire with ease and confidence, which include secure messaging, interview booking, professional references, and background checks.

What is the difference between daycare and in-home child care in Los Angeles?

With a babysitter or nanny in your home, your child gets personalized, one-on-one attention in an environment controlled by you. Your child care will match the exact schedule you need, all in the convenience of your home. If desired, you can also get house management help from your in-home provider. A daycare facility tends to be a more cost-effective option in an environment designed for learning and whole child development, with age-appropriate curriculum and structured socialization. In the end, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to child care—pick the environment that’s best for you.

Is Bright Horizons hiring daycare teachers in Los Angeles?

Yes. Please visit our careers site to view all active Bright Horizons job openings in your area. Our careers site allows you to search for all open positions (part-time, full-time, and temporary) in our centers, including positions at client center that only enroll families who work for specific employers.

Is Bright Horizons a good place to work in Los Angeles?

Yes, but don’t just take our word for it! We’ve been named 20 times as one of FORTUNE’s 100 Best Companies to Work For, and are honored to be the only child care company to ever make the list.

Does Bright Horizons have summer care in Los Angeles?

We have a partnership with Steve and Kate’s camp locations as well as our Summer Explorations programs for children ages 3-5 and 6-12.

Does Bright Horizons in Los Angeles allow children with special needs to enroll in daycare?

Yes. Bright Horizons in Los Angeles accommodates a wide range of special and individualized needs in our group programs. We offer inclusive programs that focus on each child’s strengths and support a collaborative team approach with the teacher, director, specialists, and families. The team will work closely together to maximize your child’s opportunities for learning, growth, and development, and minimize any barriers or safety issues that a group program may present.

Happy Nook

606 N Formosa Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90036

Starting at $650/day

Description:

Hi! My name is Priscilla, I am originally from Mexico City and mom to a 15-month-old son. As all parents know, there are always a number of factors that create stress when trying to make the best decision forour babies, but one of the biggest is daycare. After our son was born, my husband and I felt overwhelmed about finding the right place for him and one that we were comfortable leaving him at, for an extended period of time.
Whether it is your first time leaving your baby or not, all you want to do is make sure your little one gets the personal care and attention that they need. I thought about it for a while and realized all of these were concerns shared with other parents, so a couple of months after returning to work from maternity leave, I decided to leave the corporate world (Commercial Real Estate) and open Happy Nook.
My goal and objective is to provide your baby with individual attention so they can grow and develop in a home full of love while socializing with other babies. I will take care of your baby as if they were my own.
*This is a small home daycare, with a personalized approach as we just attend a couple of babies plus our son at a time….

Babe Jackson provides two services here at Tiny Babe’s Playhouse Child Care, childcare and tutoring services. TBP is a home away from home for your child(ren) ages 0-6 yrs old. It is also our TBP Fast TrackTutoring location for students in need of catching up or wanting to remain above average and academically polished.
We adore children of all ages. Those between the ages of infancy to 5 years old are especially adorable and extremely teachable. I am not your ordinary Child Care Provider. I definitely don’t consider myself a babysitter. My staff and I actually spend time TEACHING your children.
At Tiny Babe’s Playhouse, we are educators. No baby is too young to be exposed to educational environments. Our expertise is teaching extremely young children to excel, particularly in reading, math, and alphabets, telling time, multiplying and spelling. We have a 4 year old that came in 6th place in a Spelling Bee. All the other children in the competition were 5 & 6 years old. They were required to spell words as tough as locomotive, stethoscope, comprehension, economical, kindergarten and much more. Of course, our goal is to make sure your child is phonemically aware so that s/he can SPELL and READ anything.
We provide 2 heart-healthy meals and 2 heart-healthy snacks per day. No fried or processed foods. We schedule educational & fun field trips, and go to the library often during the summer. The pandemic, however, as altered field trips for now.
My staff has over 40 years of experience combined working with young children. We absolutely love teaching them and challenging their little brains. Our facility teaches basic American Sign Language (ASL), basic Spanish, History, Science & Global Studies. Three to four (3 to 4) years of your child being enrolled in our child care your child is GUARANTEED to be at least 3, yes THREE years academically advanced.
Enrolling your child early (as young as infant stages) is best. Why? Because we can GUARANTEE by the time your child is 4 years old, they’ll be able to read on a 1st or 2nd grade level, write, do basic math, tell time, be ACADEMICALLY prepared for 1st grade, and know their phonics so well they’ll be able to help YOU with misspelled words. 🙂
“We make sure learning is fun” so call us and schedule a tour of our facility. You are sure to be pleased.

Description:

At Sunny West Child Development Center, we believe in providing quality care for young children in an environment designed to encourage children to learn through developmental and age-appropriate practices. Webelieve that all children learn best through play, free exploration of their environment, discovery and by having positive interactions with adults and other children. With that in mind, our goals are to build self-esteem and independence, while fostering curiosity and creativity. We hope to bring both parents and teachers together in partnership to help children socially succeed and develop physically, intellectually, and emotionally.
SWCDC offers exceptional care and quality education crucial to the developing needs of your children. Our programs are designed to help your child reach his or her fullest potential. We strive to build self-confidence, nurture creativity, provide comfort whenever needed, and above all, to keep our children safe and happy.
Our major objective is to ensure that preschool children are well prepared to enter the school system. This objective begins with the toddler learning environment and continues through the preschool years. To create a positive learning environment for our children, we acknowledge that parents must also be made aware of the children’s developmental needs and what they can do to assist in satisfying such needs. Our staff will participate in on going trainings in Early Child Education Development.
Above all, our greatest service will be to provide a consistent care environment during the most critical developmental years of the young lives that have been entrusted to us. Such consistency lies at the very core of the ability to ensure quality. This requires that we maintain a clean, safe, and loving environment and that we evaluate our progress.
At SWCDC we believe that social, racial, religious and cultural diversity in the student body contributes greatly to the value of the school experience and make every attempt to incorporate this into our curriculum.
Our Toddler Program are for children 18 to 30 months old. Our PreSchool program are for children ranging from 2 years old to children ready to enter 1st grade….

Description:

At Young Scholar’s University:
The curriculum focuses on six areas of development: Cognitive, Communication, Emotional, Fine Motor, Gross Motor and Social Skills.
Cognitive Skills: Infants are buildingtheir memories, learning to develop words and learning to recognize familiar sounds. They’re exploring with their hands and mouths. In our infant room, your child will explore different textured materials, play Peek-A-Boo and complete simple wooden puzzles.
Communication Skills: By developing communication skills, infants learn how to express wants and needs to others. We understand the importance of our teachers constantly communicating with your child. Our teachers read books and poems, sing songs and teach your child how to put on finger plays.
Emotional Skills: Emotional development involves infants feeling safe in their environment and secure with the adults in their lives. We help your child build trust and attachments by watching your infant’s signals and responding to them. Our teachers hug, cradle and walk your child around the classroom while talking about everything they see.
Fine Motor Skills: Fine motor skills are developed in the small muscle groups like those in our fingers and hands. Our teachers help infants learn to grasp items and help them eat, color and complete other daily activities. We help improve pincer grasp by putting small foods in their hands, then on their tray, so they can feed themselves. They begin to wave hello and goodbye, and explore clay and other objects with their hands.
Gross Motor Skills: Gross motor development is the growth of the large muscle groups, like those in the legs and arms. Gross motor skills for infants include holding up their heads, rolling over, crawling and pulling themselves up. Kiddie Academy teachers speak encouraging words to help your child roll over. We provide your infant with plenty of tummy time, and our infants dance to different kinds of music and take walks around the academy, inside and out.
Social Skills: An infant’s social skills consist of smiling, making eye contact, imitating facial expressions and wanting to be close to other people. Kiddie Academy is a place where your child will see many different, yet consistent and familiar faces. Our teachers model good manners and proper social skills to your infant. Your child will travel around the academy to meet others-teachers and children-and will play near friends in her age-appropriate classroom to develop the early bond…

EXPERIENCED, REPUTABLE, AFFORDABLE CHILDCARE, IMPECCABLE REFERENCES!
“How I Treat Others Is My Opinion Of Myself!”
I am a highly experienced grandmother who provides loving childcare for newborns, infants and toddlers to 3-years of age. I limit my childcare to 3 children at any one time. This allows me to provide individual attention to each child, which I believe, is of the utmost importance.
I am a Home Care Provider. This type of care is known as Family, Friend and Neighbor, California (FFN) License Exempt Providers.
Home Care providers care for the children in their families as well as the children from two to three other families, not to exceed six children total. I only watch three children at any one time. Children go to the providers home for care. Home care providers are not licensed, they are usually very small and may only have your children and their own.
My home is located in a safe, family oriented area of Westchester, completely childproofed and kid friendly. I provide all childcare services from my home setting and guarantee it would be difficult to find a cleaner environment for your little one. Children are nurtured, loved and provided with a variety of stimuli to enhance their growth and development. In addition, I prepare them for the next step with early childhood tools and training plus potty training. Our days include story time, music, arts and crafts, outdoor fun and much more!
Presently, I have a RARE opening to provide room for one more. Preferably, a newborn, infant or child under 1 year of age. I encourage you to make an appointment and see for yourself the quality care I provide. Availability Monday – Friday, full-time. I have a valid driver’s license and own an SUV. DMV records and references available upon request. I am experienced with newborns and infants with feeding issues. I have used regular bottles, Haberman feeders and the Mead Johnson bottles for cleft children. I am also certified in infant, toddler and child CPR and First Aid. In addition, I have been fingerprinted and passed background testing. Plus I have completed many ECE courses which I implement. Reasonable Rates!
Note: Stringent measures in place for Covid-19. Call for details.

Cost of child care in Los Angeles, CA

The right child care is an investment that can make a lasting impact on your little one’s life. But finding and choosing the best early education provider in Los Angeles can be a difficult decision — and an expensive one.

To help in your search, we found and analyzed websites for 997 daycares and preschools across Los Angeles. We brought it all together in this guide to give you a sense of the range of prices you might see as well as the averages that you’ll likely pay based on your needs.

For full-time, full-day care in Los Angeles, the average cost across age groups ranged from $268 to $4,220 per month — with an average price of $1,430 per month.

How much does Pre-K cost in Los Angeles?

You might be wondering, “What is the difference between preschool and Pre-K?” Preschool is usually offered to children between the ages of 3 and 5 years old. Pre-K is more of a transition from preschool to kindergarten, and is usually offered for children between the ages of 4 and 5 years old. Pre-kindergartens are also sometimes attached to elementary schools and are timed for the school year right before kindergarten. This helps families more smoothly transition to kindergarten.

In Los Angeles, there are both private and public Pre-K options. We dive into both of them here.

What are the most common daycare and preschool fees in Los Angeles?

Top 3 fees

As we searched through hundreds of Los Angeles early education websites, we noticed a lot of different fees. But the 3 most common annual fees were:

1. Application (or waitlist) fee
2. Enrollment (or registration) fee*
3. Supply fee

When we combined these 3 fees together for daycares and preschools, we saw that the average total fees ranged from $25 to $4,000 — but the average was $637 per year.

Diving deeper into each of these fees:

  • Application (or waitlist fee). Application fees ranged from $25 to $2,500, with an average of $375 for each new student.

  • Enrollment (or registration) fee*. Enrollment fees ranged from $25 to $2,550, with an average of $422.

  • Supply fee. Supply fees ranged from $15 to $1,850, with an average of $320. There were a few child care providers that mentioned an itemized list of school supplies was available, in lieu of the supply fee. So, it might be worth asking if you can purchase supplies (and shop around and save) instead of paying the fee.

* A number of centers had a “facility fee” that was due at enrollment/registration. For our calculations, we included this facility fee in the enrollment/registration fee.

Additional fees

Meals. Some early education providers may provide meals. If they do, ask if this is already included in the tuition. We saw a few cases where meals were an added fee.

Deposit. Although not technically an additional fee, we have seen a number of daycares and preschools require a deposit. We’ve seen that this is many times one month of tuition that is later applied towards the last month’s tuition. Make sure to ask when and how the deposit will be applied or returned.

Penalty fees. There are a number of fees when things don’t exactly go as planned. Here are the main ones we came across when searching each of the websites:

  • Early or late arrival fee. If you drop off your little one before the scheduled time, or are running late to pick them up, there might be a fee for that. We typically saw a fee of $1 per minute.

  • Late payments. These ranged from either a per-day fee (e.g. $10 for each day late) and/or a total fee of $25 or $50.

  • Returned check. Usually around $25-50.

  • No lunch fee. If meals are not provided, and you forget to pack a lunch for your child, there may be a fee. This one wasn’t as common, though. And the fee we saw was usually around $5/day.

Discounts

Sibling discount. The most common discount we saw in Los Angeles was the sibling discount. Maybe having more siblings isn’t that bad after all. The sibling discount ranged from 2. 5% to 50%, but mostly commonly, we saw 10% to be the standard.

Lump sum payment discount. Preschool and daycare is expensive. But, if you have the means to pay the annual cost in one lump sum, some schools will give you a discount for that. If it’s not listed on the website, make sure to ask. Where it was listed, we usually saw it range from 1-5% off.

Absence and closures. Providers seem to be divided on this one. If your child will be out due to an illness or a vacation, or if the school is closed for holidays or weather, you may be wondering if you’ll get a credit for those days. Definitely make sure to read your handbook — or just ask the school. Most often, a school’s policy will likely be that no adjustments will be made. But, we did see a few schools that offered vacation credit or pro-rated certain weeks.

How to get subsidized child care in Los Angeles

Paying for child care is expensive, and Los Angeles does provide options for families to receive financial assistance for care. California offers voucher-based child care through CalWORKs, which means that you’ll be able to choose the center for your child — either a licensed or a license-exempt center in Los Angeles. CalWORKs offers three types of child care payment programs, and you can read more about the eligibility requirements here.  The California Department of Social Services website shows the maximum reimbursements you can receive, based on your income and need. For example, in Los Angeles for full-time monthly preschool programs, you could receive up to a maximum reimbursement of $1,253 per month.

Kindergartens in the USA: a literate nightmare

Americans do not feed preschool children, do not put them to bed, do not take their temperature and do not sing with them about “this is what our summer is like”. They have a right.

How are Americans different from Russians? Nothing and everything. Let’s try to reveal this contradictory thesis on a concrete example.

All toddlers eventually become adults, but young children in America have a slightly different path to adapting to independent living. This publication will focus on American kindergartens.

The last thing I want to do here is give boring numbers and statistics. We confine ourselves to one, but fundamental consideration: the American system of preschool education is fundamentally different from the Russian one.

Let’s start with the fact that in America kindergartens are called preschool, which literally translates as “before school”, but already here confusion arises, because they accept children from two months of age to five years of age. And from the age of five, kindergarten begins, which is translated from German as “kindergarten”, but this is, in fact, a two-year educational institution, after which the child goes to school. From the age of five, attending educational institutions in America is mandatory, and as for the actual kindergartens (preschool), the situation is as follows.

(I’ll make a reservation right away that we are talking about the realities of Los Angeles, a metropolis with almost 17 million inhabitants. This is a huge bustling city-road, divided into many districts, each of which, in terms of population, will quite pull on the average Russian regional center. )

There are free public (municipal) kindergartens in the USA. There is. But there are very few of them. They are overcrowded in areas where many children are born, and empty in those parts of the city where there are so few babies that these kindergartens accept children who live far from the location of the preschool.

The whole point is that the kids are here for about 4-5 hours a day. Why, you ask in surprise? Yes, because in kindergartens, children do not sleep. That is, you can bring your baby at nine in the morning, for example, and pick it up at half past twelve, or bring it at half past eleven and pick it up at five in the evening. As you know, small children can no longer stand without sleep, so at the end of this period your child will be solemnly handed over to you.

Why don’t children sleep in kindergartens? Based on two reasons. First: Los Angeles belongs to the cities located in an active seismic zone, so children are not put to bed for safety reasons. Evacuating sleeping children during an earthquake is extremely hopeless. The second reason is that in this way the principle of social justice is observed, since in this case we are talking about free preschool institutions. If the area is replete with young children, then this approach allows you to reach more people in need. Yes, and another very important point: land in Los Angeles is very expensive. Therefore, the premises for kindergartens, to put it mildly, are not amazing in size. The state pays for their rent, which, as you know, does not have enough money for anything. Though in America, even in Russia.

Children are not fed in kindergartens. Yes, yes – I also grabbed my heart when I first heard about it. Parents are required to feed their child at home and give him any food that consists of juices, cheese sticks, cookies – all this must be in sealed factory packaging. Washed and sliced \u200b\u200bfruits are allowed. Sounds creepy, right? But at the same time, there are no mass poisonings in kindergartens in the United States for this reason. Children are not fed centrally, so the chances of a child catching salmonella due to poorly boiled milk are negligible.

There are no nurses or health workers in American kindergartens. Sounds crazy, but it’s true. And here is the monstrous problem. Because unfortunate parents, who simply have nowhere to go, run to work and bring a sick child whose symptoms of a viral disease are suppressed with some kind of “talinol” (this is such a children’s mixture to reduce fever). Therefore, yes, children in kindergartens get sick. And they get sick often. But pragmatic American pediatricians see this as a plus. It is believed that the more viruses a child encounters during illness, the more intensively its immune system is built. I am not an expert – I can neither object nor refute this theory.

But not everything is so bad. The fact is that kindergartens as an institution of socialization and childcare appeared relatively recently. In the 60s of the last century, American women went to work en masse, until that time a working woman caused quite severe social ostracism. And there was a problem. So, somewhere around the 70th year, a system of municipal kindergartens was established. It should be added that this event coincided with the growth of the hippie movement. Pretty natural coincidence, right?

And then this happened. Doing business on anything is inherent in Americans, it is part of their culture. So what happened is what we see to this day. The vast majority of kindergartens in America are private. Yes, they are required to have dozens of licenses, they are tormented by constant checks, but the fact remains: parents pay the owner of the kindergarten to look after their child while they work.

Private day care centers in Los Angeles fall into three main categories. Very expensive and overloaded with entertainment – a wealthy audience sends their children there: actors, doctors, lawyers. The second category is kindergartens, which are in demand by the middle class. As well as the so-called ethnic kindergartens.

Kindergartens “for the rich” vary greatly in price. But it starts somewhere with two thousand dollars a month. For the middle class, babysitting will cost from $250 a week. Ethnic kindergartens are in the same price category, but differ from them.

It’s no secret that Los Angeles is home to a huge number of people who come from different countries. They tend to hang around. So, in places of large ethnic concentrations, private kindergartens have long appeared, satisfying the cultural traditions and needs of citizens who came, for example, from Korea. Or from Israel. Or from Russia. This is a rather strange mixture of national identity and American formalism.

Where immigrants from Russia live – this area is called West Hollywood – you will find a dozen kindergartens with the names “Just like mom” or similar. These preschool institutions almost completely copy Russian (Soviet) kindergartens. Children sleep there, they are fed four times a day. There is a nurse there who measures the child’s temperature every morning, and a music worker who sings and dances with the children is a must.

They speak Russian. All teachers are Russian. Books and cartoons in Russian also help little Americans remember their native language.

I specifically asked how things are, for example, in Korean kindergartens. There I was politely asked not to take pictures of anything, but with pleasure they allowed me to watch the little ones, who famously controlled with chopsticks, catching noodles from the broth. Hieroglyphs were full of hieroglyphs under the pictures of cats and dogs. The children spoke Korean.

There are two important points that I would like to point out. At one time, I was looking for a kindergarten for a child and ended up in one of the kindergartens that teaches children according to the Montessori system. You know, no matter how attractive the system of such integration into the life of a little person, I did not even have the courage to imagine that every day my daughter would spend six to eight hours in the basement of the church with an hour walk outside.

Yes, dear land. Therefore, kindergartens soon ceased to amaze me, in which children slept on small mats, which, after sleep, flushed, slightly disheveled, they folded and folded into the corner of a very small room. As I remember now, that kindergarten would have cost me $800 a month.

If, for example, you are late and cannot pick up your child on time, you will be met. They will stay with him at least until midnight, but then you will pay for every extra minute that your child spent in kindergarten.

Now let’s talk about what is the American kindergarten as a unit from which the social introduction of the child into society begins. Americans are pragmatists. And quite successfully integrate the findings of social psychology into life. Every psychologist knows that children under the age of three prefer so-called solitary games. They do not need a partner in building their skills. Basically, motor skills and, as a result, cognitive functions develop at this time. From this point of view, it becomes clear why the American kindergarten does not aim at instilling cultural skills and educating the child.

If you look at the requirements that a child must meet to go to a real school after kindergarten (remember, the actual compulsory school starts at the age of five?), you will be very surprised. The child must distinguish colors, geometric shapes and know at least half of the letters of the alphabet. A little, right? Children will be taught to carve, paint little men and kittens, sculpt and glue, but no one will rest against the horn to educate your child beyond the agreed norm.

There is nothing strange about a square snowflake, says the kindergarten. It makes no sense to deny it now, the Americans say, when school starts, we will teach it there. And if you don’t like it, then that’s your problem.

Roughly speaking, it looks like this: suppose that a child should eat one hundred grams of oatmeal per day. So he will eat it, not a gram more. If he does not absorb this amount, then the educators will pay attention and make every effort so that he still eats it. This is a metaphor that includes the content of a day spent in kindergarten.

If a child behaves unbearably, fights and spits, no one will specifically waste time on him. It will be tolerated for a couple of weeks, and then a polite letter will be sent to you, which will dryly inform you that “the presence of your child in our kindergarten makes life difficult for others.” And you will go to look for another kindergarten.

Preschool teachers are a different story. Among them come across absolutely amazing, warm, humane personalities, but due to the fact that the work is poorly paid, most often these are young people who are in the process of studying at the university. They have already received a license to work with preschool children, but are not yet full-fledged teachers.

Another important aspect is the multiculturalism of the population of Los Angeles. I do not like this word, but it is appropriate here. Children come from completely different cultural backgrounds, and one of the goals of the American preschool is to level out natural differences. And this happens quite easily, because when every day children drink the same juice, nibble on the same cookies, educators have only to accustom them to American norms of behavior. For an American kindergarten, for example, a fight between children is completely unacceptable. Children are not allowed to resolve conflicts on their own. For this, there is a caregiver to whom the child must contact in case of any problem. Civil fiscalism is one of the important points in the American value system.

In summary, American kindergarten is neither good nor bad. This is part of a system that is built on the basis of not ideal, but urgent needs of the American citizen. Accordingly, it is a mini-model of the American way of life.

Oh, by the way. Sending a child to the local kindergarten, you can not worry that he will pick up bad words or indecent gestures there. The first thing he will tell you upon his return will be “Pledge of allegiance” – “Oath of allegiance to the US flag.” He will be forced to memorize this oath by heart in the first week.

That’s all right here.

.”

Meals – on weekdays in the student canteen. The children are offered a choice of pizzas, pasta, hot meat or fish dishes, fresh pastries and a salad bar. On weekends, the guys have excursions, so lunches and dinners are at the venue. It is necessary to count on an average of 40-60 required for meals during excursions.

The Los Angeles Acting Summer Camp curriculum covers all of the major closely related acting techniques you need to use in order to “live honestly” under imaginary circumstances: the techniques of Stella Adler, Lee Strasburg, Stanford Meisner, Uta Hagen, Jerzy Gronowski and Ann Bogart.

Stella Adler’s technique includes complete immersion in the role and feelings of the portrayed hero. The starting point of work on the role according to Adler is imagination. Adler encourages the actor to look at life not with his own eyes, but through the prism of his imagination. The basic things that an actor has to work on are self-confidence, discipline, control over his body and emotions. The actor must memorize the text not only with his mind, but also with his body – work on the so-called muscle memory.

Lee Strasberg’s method teaches you to use your own experience as a springboard for getting used to a character’s emotional life. In his technique, Strasberg borrowed a lot from Stanislavsky. So, for example, the most significant things in his methodology are improvisation and emotional memory. The actor must believe as much as possible that the circumstances in which he is on stage are quite real. Lee Strasberg’s students include Dustin Hoffman, Marilyn Monroe, Paul Newman and Al Pacino.

Stanford Meisner’s theory teaches us to seek the truth from actors in imaginary circumstances. One of Meisner’s most popular exercises is as follows: two partners say the same things to each other until there is some change in their emotions. Meisner considered imagination to be a much more effective tool in working on a role than emotional memory. He was the teacher of Alec Baldwin, Jeff Bridges, Gregory Peck and Sandra Bullock.

Uta Hagen’s theory is that an actor must look within himself for that which will help him play. He must trust his instincts and feelings. Uta Hagen has trained actors such as Marlon Brando, Whoopi Goldberg and Matthew Broderick.

The theory of Jerzy Gronowski places the greatest value on memories – if you listen to your body, you can evoke the necessary emotions. Grotowski believed that acting skills do not need to be learned, you just need to remember what the actor already once knew and was able to do. It does not take much effort from a child to portray a superhero, a monster or a princess: he does it naturally. The task of the actor is to return to this naturalness.

Technique Annie Bogart : it is based on 6 elements – space, form, time, emotion, movement, history. These are the six languages an actor must be able to speak. According to this theory, the actor does not have the task of convincing the viewer of something, the actor must become a researcher together with the viewer. An actor is a participant in communication who is very dependent on all these elements: space (architecture, distance, distance between partners, design), form (position of bodies in space, shape of bodies, relationships between bodies and architecture) and time (tempo, duration).

* * * * *

The Acting program is closely related to film production programs – directing, producing or writing. The guys who came to the camp to get acquainted with various professions of the world of filmmaking work together, using each other’s skills and talents to create a joint product. And this product deserves to become an adornment of the portfolio of everyone who took part in its creation. Moreover, the technical equipment of the camp provides any opportunities! Portfolio footage will look and sound professional!

A feature of the Summer Camp Acting in Los Angeles is a combination of theory and practice of acting from the very first day of training: the guys will immediately be filmed on camera. Whereas many other schools force weeks, months, even years of drama and exercise before giving their students a real opportunity to work in front of the camera. At the Acting Summer Camp in Los Angeles, movie scenes will be enjoyed by everyone!!! However, this does not mean that the guys are not taught anything, exercises for the development of acting skills and theory are given in the context of preparing for a particular scene.

In addition to film acting practice, students will have intensive technical classes taught by professional actors. Students will work both in groups and one-on-one with their teachers.

Usually the morning begins with basic acting exercises that promote psychophysical development – active imagination, naturalness, partnership, breathing and kinesthetic awareness. Physical and vocal warm-ups will also be held in the morning.

Next – improvisation, study of the role, analysis of the text and scene.

Training programs

Acting – 2 or 3 weeks (13-19 years old)

June 16 – June 29, 2019 (2 weeks)
July 21 – August 03, 2019 (2 weeks)
June 30 – July 20, 2019 (3 weeks)

Levels: beginner to advanced

1st week pierre and august lumiere movie

Students must tell a simple story with a sweaty beginning, progression, and end in one frame up to two minutes. The focus is on mise-en-scene. Students must carefully consider the position of all elements in the frame – camera movements, composition, blocking of actors, props and lighting – in order to most clearly and creatively tell their stories.

2nd Week Porter Film

Edwin Porter was one of the first directors to edit shots together in continuous mode. He created the illusion of “continuity” where footage shot over the course of days or weeks looks like it was all shot in a matter of minutes. His famous film “The Great Train Robbery” is an inspiration for young actors who will have to make a 3-4 minute continuous film from several hours of footage. Students are given four hours to remove the material and one day to edit it.

3rd Week Kubrick Film

The great and most innovative cinematographer in the United States, Stanley Kubrick has created many masterpieces in his 50 years of creative career. He set the standard for cinematic excellence across multiple genres, combining staging, lighting, scenography, acting and editing to create a radical new understanding of film. Master’s films such as “2001: A Space Odyssey”, “Dr. Strangelove”, “Barry Lyndon”, “Lolita”, “The Shining” and “Full Metal Jacket” were included in the textbooks. The guys are given a whole day so that they, using the knowledge gained in 3 weeks, create their own 4-5 minute project. They will have two days to edit the material.

Professional photos

For an actor, photography is a calling card. Therefore, all students will spend time in the photo studio.

Scene and monologue

An actor without a scene and a monologue is like a photographer without a camera. Casting calls often ask actors to perform a prepared scene of their own choice. Therefore, each student will be able to choose a scene or monologue and rehearse it to perfection. This scene or monologue will be the performance of the students at the final show.

Demo video

Putting together a great demo video is the most important thing for aspiring actors and future students of creative universities. A demo video is a great showcase of the best work, a kind of your own showcase.

This video will be edited with the help of the instructors and shown on the final show at the end of the program.

Advanced Acting – 3 weeks (15-19 years old)

June 30 – July 20, 2019

A more intensive training program based on the same concepts and methods. This program is for those who intend to study in theater schools and want to make themselves the most winning creative portfolio.

Levels: advanced

Hitchcock Film

Alfred Hitchcock is a master of visual storytelling, when one silent frame tells the viewer more information than a whole dialogue of actors. The children will be encouraged to tell their stories using this method. The dialogue should be as short as possible, but the use of scene, camera movement, lighting, color and sound should be as meaningful as possible.

Kurosawa Film

One of the greatest filmmakers of all time, Akira Kurosawa was a master of all genres (“The Sven Samurai”, “Ikiru” and “The Hidden Fortress”). Kurosawa was especially attentive to acting. The children will be asked to look at each other’s works to choose the most successful films from this point of view, the most truthful acting work, without losing sight of everything they have learned about the story itself.

The success of creative self-expression is achieved as a result of the hard work of students and all camp staff. But it’s summer vacation! Therefore, despite the intense activities, the rest in the camp is filled with fun and a friendly atmosphere.

Students at the Acting Summer Camp in Los Angeles enjoy the benefits of being located in the heart of the film capital of the world. No wonder Hollywood and Los Angeles, because of the year-round sun and beautiful landscapes, have become synonymous with the word “film industry”. But Los Angeles is also the center of television, music, and fashion life in the United States. It is the center of creativity and arts. The program of the stay includes excursions to the Walk of Fame, Warner Brothers and Universal Studios, an amusement park in Santa Monica and, of course, the beach.

The obligatory program also includes meetings with filmmakers and actors, where they will tell the children about their work.

On the last Friday, the program ends with the final show, where the guys will demonstrate their skills. But everyone is invited to this show – friends and parents of young actors. Films with the participation of children and performances will be shown.

Every evening from Monday to Friday, the guys have an entertainment program, whether it’s a barbecue on campus, lunch in the city, a beach, a pool, a theater or musical production, or a movie. On Saturday afternoons, an excursion is organized – a trip to the museum, to the beach or to a show in the city. Last year the guys went to Coney Island Amusement Park, Universal Studios, disco bowling, Broadway shows, Six Flags amusement park…

Los Angeles

Los Angeles is one of the most famous cities in the United States, located in the south of California, in the eastern United States – on the Pacific coast. The city owes its fame to the twentieth century, the heyday of the film industry and the residence of famous film actors, directors and everyone who has anything to do with the world of cinema. Los Angeles is a city built on dreams: the dreams of seekers and adventurers of untold riches, emigrants of a new better life, aspiring actors of the splendor and luxury of Hollywood. You will certainly feel the energy of these dreams, embodied in stone and concrete, metal and glass, in wonderful parks, ancient and avant-garde architectural structures, fountains, frescoes and sculptures.

Los Angeles is the second most populous city after New York, with about 17 million people living in the suburbs. In the city itself (without suburbs), there are about 4 million inhabitants, among which 49.0% are white, 10.0% blacks, 0.4% Indians, 11.1% Asians, 0.3% – representatives of the indigenous population of the Pacific Islands , 26.9% – representatives of other races. 48.9% of the population define their origin as Hispanic. Los Angeles is home to one of the largest Asian and Hispanic diasporas, as well as a significant Armenian diaspora. Los Angeles is the second city in the United States after Miami in terms of the share of the population born outside the country. Even the landscape of the city is a microcosm: legendary beaches and snow-capped mountains, high-tech glass and concrete skyscrapers and sprawling suburbs with pristine, untouched nature.

Los Angeles is the capital of entertainment, the more you stay in this city, the more you will enjoy it. Los Angeles County is quite large, it consists of 88 small towns on more than a million square kilometers. This is Downtown, located about 19.2 km from the coast and combining a symbiosis of historical heritage, highly intellectual culture and the enthusiasm of the “big village”. This is forever young and shiny Hollywood in the Northwest. This is the urban design chic of West Hollywood, from where Musium Row, the main artery of Mid City, originates. This is chic Beverly Hills, student Westwood and, on the hill, the Ghetto Center. This is Santa Monica – a tourist beach paradise. These are elegant and discreet Malibu, bohemian Venice and rampant Long Beach. This is Grand Pasadena northeast of Downtown.

The gastronomic culture of Los Angeles is one of the most vibrant and eclectic in the world. All residents of the city are very fond of good food and drink, the word “gourmet” is applicable here to almost everyone. Many representatives of different nationalities live in Los Angeles, so the cuisine of this city is infinitely diverse. The cool climate means food is always fresh here. Vegetarians and healthy eaters alike can always find something to their liking. The average restaurant bill for breakfast is $8-10 per person, for lunch $10-12 and for dinner $20-25 (excluding drinks, of course). Tip – 15% of the check amount. Smoking is prohibited in public buildings, bars and restaurants, alcohol is sold only after 21 years of age.

In Los Angeles, it is customary to dress in a casual style. Men rarely wear a jacket and tie, even to dinner at a fancy restaurant. Nevertheless, Los Angeles is a city of fashion: here everyone tries to look as fashionable and rich as possible. Be sure to check out Rodeo Drive or Melrose Avenue for everything from big brand clothing to rare vintage collectible jewelry, shoes and handbags.

Los Angeles is one of the world’s largest cultural, scientific, economic and educational centers. Los Angeles is the flagship of higher and secondary specialized education in the United States, where the best American universities are located, which are included in the top best universities in the world:

  • University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA),
  • California State University,
  • California Institute of Technology,
  • University of Southern California: Health Sciences,
  • Otis College of Art and Design,
  • American Film Institute,
  • Southern California Institute of Architecture.

Climate

Los Angeles is extremely conveniently located right on the Pacific Ocean. The city itself is spread out on a hilly plain, on one side it is surrounded by mountains, on the other, it slides into the ocean. The climate is ideal: hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters, usually not lasting more than a couple of months. 329 days a year, the bright sun shines over Los Angeles. Pacific breezes make the coastline areas of the city cooler in summer and warmer in winter compared to more continental areas.

Rains are most common during the winter and spring months (February is the wettest month). Snow rarely falls within the city limits, while the mountains surrounding Los Angeles are covered with snow quite regularly. Due to climatic conditions, some days in Los Angeles it is possible to do both skiing and surfing on the same day.

With its subtropical Mediterranean climate and good ocean waves, Los Angeles is the capital of surfing. The coast in the Los Angeles area is not only beautiful, but also seems to be created for surfers of any level of skiing. Whether you’re a professional surfer, an advanced rider, or a complete beginner, surfing in Los Angeles is an experience you’ll never forget!

Malibu is a surf icon in Los Angeles with 34 kilometers of sand and waves to surf. This is a paradise for longboarders.

Zuma Beach – offers crystal clear water and a large number of wave peaks for everyone. There are many surf competitions here.

Venice Beach is a crowded classic Californian surf spot with a boardwalk beach 4 kilometers away.

Manhattan Beach is a great choice for experienced surfers with 12 foot waves.

Redondo Beach is a beach where surfing competes with beach volleyball.

It is worth visiting the beaches of El Porto, Heavens, Leo Carillo, Lunada Bay, Pyramid Cove Point, Samo 20, Sunset Beach, TC’s and Zeroes, Hermosa Beach.

Kindergarten in California: Ukrainian will seem like a paradise?

In Silicon Valley, the most primitive kindergarten costs $1,500 and actually provides only security, the rest is the responsibility of the child and parents.

My family — my husband and son — came to the USA for a year to study. And although my son had a nanny at home in Ukraine, in California we thought about a kindergarten. I wanted not to miss the opportunity to study for each member of the family, and I also wanted Fedya to push the boundaries from childhood and he could make friends with children of different nationalities.

On the other hand, my husband and I had no experience with kindergartens in Ukraine. Dima didn’t go to kindergarten, but I hated mine terribly, so we couldn’t decide whether to send our four-year-old Fedya to this amazing place.

In the end, we decided to try.

Feda is 4 years old, so a big and wonderful world of preschool has opened before us. In California, there are only private kindergartens for children under 5 years old. The choice is very large, they are different in shape and quality. The first time we studied the information to find the one. It turned out that this is not easy: there is a long queue for decent kindergartens in Silicon Valley, and they cost a lot. Based on the price and availability, we chose.

I think we hit the jackpot and found the most outlandish garden that shares space with the Egyptian Orthodox Church. Just think about it: a Ukrainian child went to an English-speaking kindergarten at the Egyptian Orthodox Church, and all this in California.

A complete medical examination and all required vaccinations are required prior to admission. Then we chose how many days a week and how many hours the child would spend in kindergarten. The cost depends on the service package. At first, Fedya went to kindergarten 5 times a week from 9up to 16 for $1450 per month. Such an amount and with such a level of service is simply impossible to imagine in Ukraine.

I have heard so many times from indignant mothers about how badly they feed/teach in public kindergartens in Ukraine! I heard that you have to give up 200 UAH per month to improve the quality of food. I understand them perfectly and do not blame them. But I thought about these women every day as I cooked Feda’s kindergarten lunch in the morning.

In fact, our $1450 garden provides only a roof over your head and no additional services. The child should have his own lunch, his own bottle of water, his own sleeping bag and his own workbooks for classes. Because this is a cheap kindergarten, then all this is against the backdrop of shabby doors, cheap toys and with the most primitive approach to education: they learn English letters, count, sing songs.

Our garden consists of three small rooms and a courtyard with a table, bicycles and slides. And this is one of the few kindergartens where daytime sleep is provided. Children sleep right in the classroom in their sleeping bags. Just imagine: 30 babies who are trying to sleep in sleeping bags in one small room. In fairness, I note that you can just lie down or play quietly, as Fedya did.

For the same money, we saw more inspiring places, however, there the schedule was from 8 to 13:45, and did not suit us. In our kindergarten, besides, the teachers went out of their way to meet us. Perhaps it was difficult for them themselves to come up with something enticing for Fedya and stimulate his desire to attend kindergarten. Perhaps they didn’t care. But they gladly accepted our idea – to plant a plant in a pot. Thus, Fedya got an incentive to come to the kindergarten every day and check on his pet – how he is growing. I think overcoming his fears is the most important thing this kindergarten has given him. He ceased to be afraid of mutual misunderstanding, ceased to be complex due to poor knowledge of the language. He began to try to talk, he made friends.

I think that such a kindergarten in Ukraine would cause horror. The child is not coaxed to eat and drink and may bring all the food and water back home. It can freeze on the street or, conversely, get wet from the heat, because. nobody followed it up. Here, no one will force the child to change clothes. This is your business and your responsibility. Whether this is good or bad is debatable. But children are not forced to do what I hated my kindergarten so much for.

On the other hand, $1,500 a month for the most primitive kindergarten is expensive. Especially when you have multiple children. Then mothers do not work, there is no economic benefit: kindergarten + nanny – a decent amount will come out. But no one blames the state. Unlike Ukraine. Something I have never heard anyone say: maybe life in Ukraine is not very good, but we have free kindergartens. When you lose something familiar, you begin to appreciate it.

  • Features of buying real estate in LA

Buying real estate in Los Angeles is an important step on the way to settling confidently in the United States. If you are seriously thinking about buying an apartment, then you should be very careful when choosing the area, agency and, of course, the very object in which you plan to live. The article contains a few tips on what you should definitely pay attention to when choosing a house or apartment.

    Advice No. 1

Consider where it is best for you to stay while you are looking for permanent housing. Of course, the best option would be if you choose an approximate area for yourself using the Internet in advance and settle in a hostel nearby. You will save time and money on transportation and at the same time get to know the chosen area better.

    Tip #2

Decide which area of Los Angeles you want to live in. You should, of course, proceed from your needs. I will give the characteristics of some areas to make it easier for you to navigate. For example, Beverly Hills is a glamorous town that offers a high quality of life and a huge real estate price tag. Belle El is also a very prestigious area, whose inhabitants are mainly stars, respectively, the purchase of apartments will be expensive, as in the area of Brentwood , which is also in demand among celebrities. Place Venice is ideal for lovers of the beach and nightlife. Stars, tourists and parties – this is how you can characterize the famous Hollywood , named the most stellar of all neighborhoods. Another district, perhaps the most Russian, is West Hollywood , which includes Little Russia, where the Russian-speaking population is concentrated (its share is about 14% of the inhabitants). Malibu and Santa Monica are great for athletes and students. And the so-called city within the city Pasadena perfectly combines the possibilities for entertainment and quiet life. Pacific Palisades is a prestigious and expensive residential area, where there are spacious modern private houses, small old mansions, and apartment buildings.

    Advice No. 3

Once you have chosen an area, explore it carefully. It would be appropriate to read reviews on the Internet about the area. By buying apartments in some areas, you will certainly save money, but you will lose significantly in terms of security. Therefore, pay special attention to the type of terrain. It would also be nice to walk around for another hour and see what contingent prevails here, also do not forget to evaluate the infrastructure nearby: shops, kindergartens, bus stops, parks, beaches, and so on. Try to spend more time here, see if it’s noisy during peak hours? Basically, Russians prefer to settle in the San Fernando Valley. The property is offered at a moderate price and there are many grocery stores with Russian food and kindergartens where children are brought up in Russian nearby.

    Advice #4

Go to active surveillance: get to know your neighbors. Ask them about the area, about other neighbors, find out how well the infrastructure is really developed, whether there is a good garden nearby, how much time they spend traveling to shops and how they spend their leisure time. Be sure to ask the locals about the quality of public services, and it will not hurt to ask about the history of the house and those who were the previous owner. Perhaps they will tell you why they moved out of here, if you are not buying a new building.

    Advice No. 5

Ask for help from a Russian-speaking real estate agency, hire a professional realtor who will explain to you all the formal nuances. For many Russians, and for Americans too, US law is an impenetrable forest with many features and amendments, so it is better to entrust the execution of documents to a specialist. Of course, with the help of the Internet you can figure everything out on your own, but be aware that you will spend your most valuable resource on this – time.

    Advice No. 6

When you have already decided on a living space or have several specific options, it’s time to pay attention to the little things. However, you will not be able to look into all corners on your own. It is unlikely that you will be able to assess the strength of the foundation, the quality of plumbing and the serviceability of all wiring. Some flaws are difficult to identify during a philistine inspection, so the ideal solution is to order a home inspection. Of course, this will require additional investments, but it is better to pay now than to invest in repairs and troubleshooting every month later.

    Tip #7

Estimate your budget wisely. Buying apartments in the city is only half the battle. Be prepared that in addition to buying furniture and finishing materials, you will have to pay a few more taxes in the process of real estate registration and bear the monthly costs of maintaining a house or apartment. Count it all, and make sure you are able to allocate such an amount.

Good luck shopping in this sunny city!

In Los Angeles without a car

Once I was lucky to be in the city of angels at the end of winter. It was amazing summer weather. Of course, you can’t swim in the ocean, but you can comfortably walk along the beach in shorts, and even your nose will burn. Friends envied – in Russia it is still cold, and on the Pacific coast there is sun and warm winds. But my friends did not know (and I did not know) that I would only be able to see the ocean on weekends, when my motorist friends were free. And for me, a person without a driver’s license at that time, there was practically nothing to do in the middle of a huge city.

In this report, I will talk about all the ordeals that await a traveler in Los Angeles, if he – by some coincidence – ended up there without a car.

We must start with the fact that Los Angeles is a giant city, flat and endless. The population of Los Angeles is 3,792,620 people. To be precise, it would be better to call it not a city, but a district consisting of 88 cities located on more than four thousand square miles. These cities include Hollywood, Venice, Santa Monica, Downtown, Beverly Hills, Malibu, Long Beach…

We lived in Encino, this is such a normal “sleeping” town-district, completely built up with one- and two-story houses with tiny gardens, the rich do not show off here, killers do not walk, but on the corner there is an Armenian-Jewish kindergarten, and in supermarket price tags in Hebrew. Wikipedia says that the area is rich, but I would not say so. I’ve seen houses in Beverly Hills, so I have something to compare. Encino is normal, safe, sunny, boring. On the sides of smooth roads – palm trees. In a couple of blocks there is a noisy freeway, along which cars rush by. Away from it are parks.

On the first morning, I was overwhelmed with delight – from the fact that there was a green lawn in front of the house, from the fact that American old people with dogs were walking along the streets, from the fact that they shouted to each other across the road: “How are you today?” I felt like I was in a movie or in an English class. Until I went outside. Until I wanted to explore the area.

After walking an hour in one direction, I did not find any changes around. Home, home, home, supermarket, home, home, school. Rare dog lovers are walking towards us or athletes are rolling their bikes. Everyone says hello and wish you a good day. All these pedestrians have specific goals, they did not just go for a walk: someone needs to go to the store for potatoes, someone needs to buy newspapers on the corner, someone needs to air the dog. People like me – idly wandering and eager to explore new spaces – are not to be found here. They just don’t roam the streets like that. People come out of their houses, open their garages, get in their cars and drive away. I realized this already after an hour and a half of meaningless walking along the California sidewalks along the California lawns. And then suddenly a stoned man came up to me, all in tattoos and piercings, blew smoke in my direction and languidly said: “Hey, baby.” I gave up and returned home.

The next day I decided to use public transport. “I’ll get to the ocean!” I boldly told myself. And having studied the issue of moving on the Internet, she drooped and was upset. To Santa Monica – 2.5 hours by bus with four transfers. (By car for half an hour – for comparison). And this must also take into account the waiting time at stops, because buses run rarely – once every 20-30 minutes. A single ticket is $1.50. There are no free transfers. Besides, all this can still be dangerous. For example, it is not recommended to be in the area of the main bus terminal of Downtown in the evening. There are vagrants with weapons hanging around, decorated ladies motivate men to acts of various degrees of sinfulness, and all that, you know. Once we even encountered the world of Los Angeles at night: a black bandit pursued us for many blocks, insulting girls and begging for money from men, gradually turning to threats. In short, what am I. Everything is bad. I’m not a superhero or a desperate backpacker. And I decided not to go to the ocean.

Here, pay attention to the grandmother with a backpack.

On the third day, after seeing everyone off to work, I realized something about Desperate Housewives. There was no gardener or relative I wanted to kill before my eyes. So I opened the map and began to closely study all the interesting places within a radius of 15 miles (about 24 km). Luckily, Universal Studios Hollywood was an hour’s bus ride from my house and there were no transfers.

I waited for the bus for a long time, sitting on a bench with an ancient old man who probably had affairs with girls back in the days of the Great Depression, and with a smiling Mexican woman reading a book in Spanish. The rest of the city apparently had enough money and skills to drive their own (or, well, rented) car.
Then I rode the bus, staring at the screen of the iPad, where a small blue dot (I) was slowly but surely approaching my destination. I was not sure until the very end that this was the bus that I needed. Paranoia mode is on. And all those lovely fellow travelers who dream of chatting with you. In fact, there was nothing to be afraid of, and a lady with long white hair, wondering for twenty minutes that I was from Russia, is a very pleasant memory for me now. It just seemed to me that I could get lost and disappear in this huge city. So I panicked for no reason.

Then I had a whole day of adventure and entertainment in one of the most interesting amusement parks in the world. I visited the most famous film sets, saw the scenery of many films, including the TV series Desperate Housewives, the heroine of which I felt all morning, survived an 8.3 magnitude earthquake and a shark attack from the movie Jaws, appreciated the power of special effects of various Hollywood films, rode with some elderly French couple on various slides, fled from a dude dressed in a Shrek costume. Had a good time, overall.

Then it took another hour to get home.

The next day I asked the locals where I could still ride public transport. The flatmate shrugged her shoulders bored and suggested that I spend the day in a shopping center where absolutely everything is sold. It takes an hour to go there, and I’m not interested in shops. The option is gone by itself.

I saw on the map that a green recreation area is located an hour and a half walk from my house: a lake, golf courses, a Japanese garden, lawns and trees. I put on some comfortable shoes and started walking. An hour and a half later, she reached the place. She sat down on a bench near the water and began to look at the ducks. It was February, the almonds were in bloom, the sun was hot on the back of my head. I almost fell asleep when I suddenly heard Russian speech. Two grandmothers were sitting on a nearby bench, talking loudly about the prices of cigarettes in nearby stores. I wanted to sit down with them and take part in the conversation, complaining about swollen legs and jet lag that I still can’t cope with.

These grandmothers are American. And we met with them in Griffith Park. Their dogs – James and Joyce – I fell in love with instantly.

But instead, I got up and went for a walk further – along the fence that encloses the golf course. I heard screams – already in English. Two golfers in an electric car, apparently, were driving towards me. I made little out of their thick and dense speech, escaping from their beautiful American mouths so emotionally and so easily. I stopped, their electric car drove up to the fence that now separated us. I told them slowly and clearly that my English was not your American. They giggled. They asked a couple of routine questions about my homeland and my well-being. I told them that everything is ok. The guys pointed to my camera: “If you hurry a little, you will still have time to take a picture of Smokey Robinson at the exit of the club.” Whom? Who is this? The golfers were surprised to explain that this is such a cool musician, he also has a band called The Miracles, and right now he is playing golf all over the place. I looked in the direction of nervous American hands, eager to share their find with me. “Okay,” I say, “I’ll google it.” The guys, in desperation, proceeded to the last method – they began to sing. They so wanted me to remember the beautiful Smokey Robinson. But, unfortunately, I didn’t succeed.
Actually, all I could think about was that I still had an hour and a half to go home.
(At home, I typed Smokey Robinson’s name into a search engine, and he really turned out to be a famous guy. I even listened to his sweet songs – “Ooo Baby Baby” and “The tracks of me tears”).

That was the end of my solo trips. I also thought about Hollywood, which was 15 miles away from me. You could get to it first by bus, and then by metro in an hour and a half. But my fear of dying in this city became even more acute when I found myself on Hollywood Boulevard. So I just waited for the evening when my friends and husband came home from work. We got into the car and went on trips. It was especially cool on weekends – then we allowed ourselves to travel longer distances.

Next time I’m in LA, I will travel exclusively by car. For this, I have already passed on the right. Or better yet, go to San Francisco.

    Los Angeles Public Transportation

Tickets cost $1.50 per trip, and there are no free transfers between the metro and buses.
You can buy a TAP card at metro stations from vending machines. The number of trips is not limited, there are travel cards for a day, a week, a month.
