School Readiness programs offer qualified parents the opportunity to access affordable, quality child care, allowing them to work and contribute to the community while being assured their children are safe and well cared for.
Direct child care services are delivered through a comprehensive network of more than 100 contracted child care providers, including licensed centers, family child care homes, school-based programs, and faith-based programs throughout Alachua County. To enroll your child in a school readiness program, click on the Parent Portal link above.
As part of the School Readiness program, regular screenings and assessments help identify children who may have special needs and help parents address these needs early, giving children the best chance of success. Nearly 2,200 children and their families are served by School Readiness Programs in Alachua County each year.
Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten (VPK) (or preschool) is available free to all Florida 4-year-old children. VPK programs emphasize learning through play, using developmentally appropriate instruction and activities. Approved VPK providers prepare children to be ready for kindergarten.
Approximately 1,500 children participate in Alachua County VPK programs each year. To enroll your child in a VPK program, click on the Parent Portal link above.
Child Care Resource & Referral (CCR&R) services are offered to everyone regardless of income and offer up-to-date child-care provider information based on individual needs, as well as listings for food, clothing, shelter, transportation, employment opportunities, training, and professional development. Monthly Chapel & Instructional Bible Classes
The first Wednesday morning of each month, our academy preschool staff and students come together for a chapel service hosted by The Family Church. We honor God in this way by giving him worship each month.

Infant Care: The Stages of Baby`s First Year
The first year of a baby`s life is crucial for their development both physically and emotionally.
Their immune systems are not yet fully developed, so it is important to take extra care of them until they are able to protect themselves fully. During their first year, you will notice your baby go through three different stages. – Neonatal period: Birth until about two weeks – Newborns are like newborns everywhere – they are small, immature, and depend on the environment around them for support. – Infancy period: Two weeks until the end of the first year – Infants rely on the people in their environment to help them understand the world around them and to learn how to get along in it. – Toddler period: End of the first year until the end of the second year – Toddlers are like little scientists, experimenting with the world, trying everything out and learning from the consequences of their actions.
Infant Care: Your Newborn`s Care
Your newborn will go through many changes during their first few weeks.
These changes are necessary to help them adjust to their new environment and prepare them for breastfeeding. – Skin to help them grow and lose their newborn vernix, layer of skin that protects them while in the womb. – Circulation of blood to help grow their little organs and tissues. – Breathing to help them learn how to breathe and regulate their own breathing. – Reflexes that help them register and react to different stimuli.

It is also a time when you need to be fully prepared for all the unexpected, sleepless nights and dirty nappies. What does it take to keep a new baby happy, healthy, and safe? At The Academy Preschool, we provide daycare service as soon as 8 weeks, partnering with parents to raise up loving, confident and godly children.
How do I choose a good infant daycare?
Choosing a good infant daycare can be a daunting task. There are many things to consider when choosing a daycare for your child, such as safety, education, and socialization. Here are some tips on how to choose a good infant daycare:
1. Research: Before enrolling your child in daycare, do some research to find out which daycares are best suited for your needs.
You can ask friends and family for recommendations or search online. Be sure to check out the daycare centers’ credentials and reviews before making a decision.
2. Budget: Making sure you have enough money set aside for childcare is important when choosing an infant daycare. Not only will you have to pay for the daycare itself, but you’ll also need to factor in travel costs if the daycare is outside of your normal commute zone.
3. Location: When choosing where to enroll your child in infant daycare, location is key. You’ll want to look for a center that’s close to home so that you can easily drop off and pick up your child throughout the day. 3). If possible, start preparing your infant at least 2 months before actually starting daycare. This will give you time to bond and get used to not being together all the time. Start by gradually introducing the idea to your baby. You can do this by talking about it or by showing her pictures of the place where she’ll be going.
4). Get a good book on infant sleep training because it’s critical that your baby gets enough rest each day… before starting daycare :-). You’ll also have time to improve any sleep issues with your baby before she falls asleep in someone else’s arms all day long! Sleep training can reduce crying and help everyone relax naturally… as well as set up healthy sleep patterns that will last a lifetime! Good infant sleep training can improve every aspect of life for both you and the baby! It’s very important so don’t ignore it!
5).
Practice putting on makeup, tying shoes, grabbing lunch out the fridge, mobile devices, work meetings on a pretend phone (yes!), pumping at work to get an idea of how that goes… whatever behaviors you’ll need to prepare yourself for when there is no one around but an infant (and maybe a night nurse)… and you have to do everything yourself!(?) If possible do this at least 1 month before so it becomes second nature! You’ll want to be prepared. 😆😆
6). Find a distraction toy or two that your infant really likes and bring them to daycare with you when you first start sending your baby there. This will help keep them calm and distracted during the transition period and make it easier for them to transition into the daycare setting.
Are there any alternatives to infant daycare?
There are many alternatives to infant daycare, depending on your individual circumstances. However, there are a few things that you should keep in mind when looking for an alternative to infant daycare.
First, you should try to find a childcare arrangement that will meet both your needs and your child’s needs. You may need childcare that is convenient for you to get to and from, as well as one that provides plenty of stimulation for your child. You may also want childcare that is affordable and has flexible hours so that you can take time off when necessary.

Can I tour the facility?
YES! We understand the importance of transparency when it comes to your fur baby, so we are happy to provide tours of our facility. This may be easier during certain hours of the day than others (such as morning drop off or feeding times) so please give us a call to confirm the best time.
How old does my pup need to be before I can bring him or her to Camp?
The minimum age requirement for puppies is 12 weeks of age. Typically, by this point they have received at least 2 sets of their initial puppy shots, and most vets agree this is an acceptable time to begin introducing your puppy to other dogs. Don’t forget, all Campers are required to be up to date on all vaccinations while at Camp Run-A-Mutt, so this is also one of the safest places for your puppy to begin interacting with new dogs.
Why does my dog need to be neutered/spayed at 7 months of age?
Our spay and neuter requirements are for the safety of all dogs in our care, especially yours. Often, when puppies begin to produce sex hormones, it can lead to unwelcome behaviors. It can also cause other dogs to behave differently toward that dog than they normally would. In order to prevent behavioral issues on both sides, and since this is the average age where problems begin to arise, all dogs must be altered by 7 months at the latest. This is also why sterilization procedures alone are not sufficient to eliminate the risks. Procedures such as chemical sterilization in male dogs, for example, do not end hormone production, so many of those potentially problematic behaviors remain. (That being said, some puppies develop more quickly than others and may begin to exhibit certain behaviors earlier than this. If we believe that this may lead to an unsafe environment for any dog, including yours, we may ask you to temporarily refrain from daycare and boarding until after your dog has been fixed.

What is a temperament test?
A temperament test is an opportunity for us introduce your dog(s) to a cross-section of the types of dogs they will meet in our play yards, and assess their comfort level with each type of dog. We use a mix of males and females, small, medium, and large sized dogs, and puppies, adult, and senior dogs (all of which we see on a regular basis!). This helps us know how to set your dog up for success on their first day of daycare, to ensure they have a comfortable and fun experience!
Can I watch the temperament test?
Absolutely! We have a live camera feed of our temperament test area so that you can see exactly what’s going on, from the comfort of our customer lounge. In an effort to create the most accurate representation of our primary play areas, we don’t permit customers to be in the area while we are conducting the temperament test. Since you won’t be there when your pup is in the play yard, we want to understand how they behave without you nearby.
But we promise to communicate with you during every step of the process!
How long does a temperament test take?
The short answer: it depends. The longer answer: There is no pre-determined length of time. Each temperament test is conducted based on the unique needs of the new dog. For a dog that’s been in daycare their whole life and is happy-go-lucky and super confident, it may be no more than 5-10 minutes. For a dog that hasn’t had a lot of socialization, or is slow to warm up to new people or dogs, we will slow it down to match their comfort level. We want to set each new dog up for success, so we never want to rush them into a situation they aren’t ready for! For that reason, we generally ask that you budget about 15-30 minutes for the whole process, from start to finish.
Can I do a temperament test first thing in the morning, right when you open?
We know that life is busy, which is why we offer temperament testing every day that we are open for daycare. However, when we first open in the morning (or at the very end of the day), we do not have the appropriate number of staff or dogs to facilitate an accurate temperament test.
For this reason, we ask that you call or email us to determine the best time for you to bring in your pup. This also allows us to ensure that we can provide you the highest level of customer service and our undivided attention when you arrive!
I just adopted my dog last weekend. Can I schedule a temperament test?
Congratulations! The majority of our Campers are adopted, and we love that! However, we know that newly adopted dogs have had a lot of transition their lives, potentially in a very short period of time. Also, there are several aspects of daycare that are very similar to a shelter environment (barking, tons of smells, many different dogs, strange people). That might cause a dog to think they are back in that place, and revert back to behaviors they might have exhibited at that time such as those associated with anxiety or fear. Since they are still in an adjustment period, and because you may not be able to provide much information about their behaviors after only a short time together, we ask that you wait at least 3 weeks before bringing your new family member into daycare.
In the meantime, we recommend lots of bonding time through walks, playtime, and treats!
My dog has been in daycare before, why does Camp Run-A-Mutt require another temperament test?
We do this to ensure the safety of each and every dog that enters our facility. Dogs are very sensitive animals and may respond differently to new sights and smells, people, and dogs, so we want to ensure that the combination of those stimuli at our location is a good fit for your pup. This is a requirement even if your dog has been a camper at another Camp Run-A-Mutt, or maybe even if it’s been a long time since your last visit to our location.
Why does my dog need to complete a “test day” before they can board?
Our cage-free boarding is a unique concept. As such, it may not be the perfect option for every dog (and that’s ok!). To ensure the safety and comfort of all pups in our care, we require that all Campers spend a minimum of one 6+ hour day with us prior to being allowed to spend the night.
This allows us to observe their behavior over the course of the day. Sometimes, dogs who appear comfortable at first can become anxious as other dogs begin to go home from daycare or cranky as they get tired from playing. Because having dogs who are tired and relaxed is key to having a restful night of boarding, we want to make sure that your pup settles in well. Should your dog appear uncomfortable or overly anxious as the day progresses, we may recommend additional daycare prior to scheduling boarding. We also encourage customers planning for a long boarding stay (a week or more, for example) to consider a “trial” boarding night prior to their dog’s first long stay, so they can experience staying overnight, but getting to go home with their parent(s) the next day. This makes the next time less scary!
Why do we need to check in before noon for boarding?
Our noon-drop off requirement has several benefits, all of which are geared toward ensuring your dog has the best first night possible.
Generally by noon, most daycare dogs have arrived for the day, meaning less changes to the pack dynamic, which can help your dog settle into the day. They also have the opportunity to be greeted by and hang out with the other dogs who will be spending the night with them, and most of the employees who will be on site for that day. Most importantly, arriving by 12pm gives your dog the chance to play for at least 6 hours before the day starts winding down. And we know that a tired dog makes for the best slum-grr party guest.
Why do you want me to individually package my dog’s meals when boarding?
We ask that you bring your dog’s meals in pre-portioned containers of your choosing (ziplock or paper bags, jars, reusable containers – all of which we are happy to save and return to you, if you like) so that we can quickly determine at check in that your pup has enough food for their entire stay based on your feeding instructions. It also eliminates any disparities in measurements, so you know your dog is getting exactly how much you intend (does “1 cup” mean 1 level cup, 1 heaping cup, or 1 scant cup?).
And, most importantly, it frees us up to spend more time playing with your dog (which we’re pretty sure is what we all want)!
My dog is boarding. Can I pick my dog up before you open or after you close?
Although we are staffed 24 hours per day, we cannot accommodate after hours pick ups. For the safety of all dogs in our care, Camp Run-A-Mutt has very strict policies when it comes to employee supervision of Campers. Depending on the number of boarding dogs, there may only be one employee on site, and they would need to leave other dogs unattended in order to check out your dog, which is inconsistent with our standards of care. However, if you give us advanced permission to do so, we will gladly allow someone other than you to pick your dog up, if you are unable to do so during our normal business hours.
Why can’t I see my dog on the Muttcams? Are they ok?
Our Muttcams are placed to provide the maximum view of our play areas and the best action footage. Many of our dogs play so much that they have to rest and recharge, so there’s a good chance your pup is just relaxing out of camera view.
Sometimes newer dogs like to observe from the sidelines for awhile before venturing into the mix. If you can’t spot your dog for awhile, always feel free to give us a call and we can give you an update that way.
Why did you put a Camp collar on my dog today?
For their safety, all Campers must wear a proper fitting quick-release collar while participating in daycare or boarding. If they happen to arrive at Camp without one, we can utilize one of our collars for the day. (Please note: if your dog cannot wear a collar for medical reasons, we can permit them to wear a harness instead.)
Why did you leash/time out/or move my dog today?
There are a number of reasons why we may temporarily leash a dog, or move them to a different part of the facility, but it’s always based on creating the safest environment possible for all the dogs in our care. Please give us a call, or talk to us when you pick up your dog and we will be happy to discuss in detail.

My mother and I visited Kanapaha twice this year.
Once in February and again in July. It is very beautiful and well maintained. We especially liked the bamboo part of the hotel. We highly recommend a visit!

The Kanapaha Botanical Garden is a great place to take a stroll to relax and feel nature in Gainesville.
You can also bring your dogs with you. It can be a little hot in the summer to visit and there can be a lot of mosquitoes during the rainy season, so it’s good to bring some kind of bug spray with you and for your dogs. It is also a very good place for an outdoor wedding.

Lovely garden to stroll through

We visited here in April and were disappointed to have just missed the last of the camellias. And we were too early for many of the varieties that would be blooming soon. Our visit was also stymied by construction work along the East Gardens Loop, which closed off a chunk of the path to foot traffic. Despite all this, the Gardens are still beautiful and contain a wide variety of garden types (24 per their website).
The $8 admission is much lower than many other gardens we have visited. The highlights were the Bamboo Garden, reputed to be the largest public collection of bamboo in Florida. We also really enjoyed standing next to several ground collapses! First for me! The Kindergarten was amazing as was the waterfall area right next to it. I really liked spotting the various ‘sculptures’ hidden around it. The Knot Garden was really nice, too. My favorite was the Maze; i loved the mondo grass in it, and also located throughout the gardens. My one negative comment belongs to the plant id. Every time we wanted to know the name of a plant, we would check for a marker/label but couldn’t find one. There were markers; but it seemed hit and miss.

Family Fun
I have been a regular attendee and visitor to the Kanapaha Botanical Garden for almost 7 years.
I really enjoy visiting year-round as the flowers are constantly changing. I love bird watching, frequent flowers, rare and unusual flowers, and the quiet and peacefulness of a morning walk. It’s inexpensive – especially if you have a membership.

Nice Walk on a Beautiful Day

62 acres divided into various themed gardens. Interesting and interesting shapes and textures are tucked around the gardens. Easy walk after pavement around – had to avoid some sprinklers but Fl. was dry! Most of the plants were labeled, which helped find the unusual ones. Kindergarten especially well done I think. We arrived early which is a good idea in the summer as part of the area is not shaded – most.
Humidity can build up and be sure to wear insect repellant if you’re not going to keep walking! Good place for souvenirs. Oh, and the entry price is very reasonable.

Beautiful gardens!
Traveling alone
I was very impressed with the gardens! The menu was pretty easy to find and I spent several hours walking around quietly. I really enjoyed the herb garden which was quite educational talking about the use of herbs in my home countries. There were plenty of benches, gazebos and good places to sit and plenty of shade from the sun. Although it wasn’t blooming season for most plants, I still had a good time!

Beautiful but go for a chilly day
For two
Was here recently with my wife and she loved it. We had a nice picnic on the side of the garden. It was a bit hot so we only explored about half of the other side (the water gardens) before driving home. Will definitely be back to see the rest! Overall it was a lot of fun and very well serviced. Obviously this is a popular wedding venue, although I can’t imagine missing out on the heat and humidity; perhaps the best idea during the winter months.

The gardens themselves are stunning.
Sometimes kids get bored. I also recommend bringing $3 to get fish food so you can feed the cod. Kanapaha gardens are spread over Ton of land, so one can spend about 1-3 hours here. Warning: It gets very hot in summer

The Florida Senate passed a bill on April 20 to strip Walt Disney Co.

A special status of self-government was given to the Walt Disney World Resort amusement parks in 1967 (Disney’s headquarters is located in Burbank, California, and the largest Walt Disney World Resort is located near Orlando, Florida. – Ed.). Existing law gives Disney the authority to operate as a separate county with the ability to levy taxes, issue regulations, and provide emergency services within the territory where the theme parks are located. The company controls more than 100 square kilometers in the Orlando area and can build new structures without the approval of the local planning commission.
As a reminder, we wrote in the last issue that Florida authorities could strip Disney of such privileges: the children’s entertainment giant went on the warpath against Governor DeSantis after passing a law banning LGBTQ+ propaganda in kindergartens and elementary schools.
The company has pledged to use its influence and finances to fight for the repeal of the law. True, skeptics assumed that the authorities were unlikely to aggravate relations, since Disney is one of the largest employers in Florida and the state economy largely depends on the company. However, the state legislators now backed the decision by a vote of 23 to 16. Another vote in the lower house is now required before the bill reaches DeSantis’ table. The governor has already urged the Legislature to support the bill, saying it “does not support special privileges in the law just because the company is strong.” If the bill is passed and signed into law, self-government privileges that exempt the Central Florida mega-resort from certain tax rules and fees will be eliminated effective June 1, 2023.
Separately, the Senate also voted 24-15 to pass a measure that would remove the exclusion of Disney and Disney Plus from the Big Technology Censorship Act 2021.

Choosing a school when moving to the US / Sudo Null IT News
Many people with children who are planning to move to the US have heard about the need to carefully choose their area of residence.
It is especially important to understand which schools belong to the chosen address. After the move, the head is usually spinning and there is no time to sort out the intricacies. It is important to understand and remember the following: websites of real estate agencies and aggregators like Zillow do not provide up-to-date and correct information about whether a particular address belongs to a particular school!
The following is a step-by-step guide to identifying schools associated with a specific address and analyzing those schools.
First, a small cheat sheet (information may vary slightly for different states):
Elementary School – c K (Kindergarten) to 5th grade (from 5/6 to 10/11 years old)
Middle School – c 6 1st to 8th grade (11 to 14/15 years old)
High School – 9th to 12th grade (15 to 18 years old)
K-8 – combined Elementary + Middle, more common in new development areas and sparsely populated areas.
Charter school – charter schools. Private schools funded by the state. They require a separate story. In short, a good charter school is chosen by lot. Therefore, they cannot be guided as a “default” school
Magnet school – specialized schools with additional subjects.
Sometimes it is possible to study in one school for all ages K-12 (often in different cases). It is important to understand that in this case, the school ratings will most often refer to High School.
In any case, you should carefully read and check all the information in each case.
1) By far one of the most convenient sites for finding real estate is www.zillow.com
You can start your search from there. The interface of the site is intuitive, but the boundaries of the districts related to schools are not completely and not always correct.
For the initial review, you can make a filter by the rating of schools by turning off private, charter schools and choosing a rating of more than 7.
Decent areas are already visible by the concentration of good schools. Please note that Zillow uses data from the www.greatschools.org website, the interpretation of which is a separate conversation. So, we roughly determined the area where we want to live. Having turned on the filter by the price of rent or purchase, we are sadly convinced that there are very few options.
But it is important to make sure that the options that we have are suitable for us.

In this case, the work of checking the correctness of information about the school was done by the agent. And his information confirms Zillow’s data. This is a rather rare option, but even in this case, I recommend making sure the information is correct.

2) Determine the County we are interested in.
County is the smallest autonomous territorial unit in the United States. There are more than 3000 of them in total. They are responsible for the schools in their territory. The biggest problem is that counties most often have unique websites, systems of registration, accounting, etc.
Very often, counties divide one city into several parts. Sometimes in quite unexpected ways. Orlando (FL) split example:
As you can see, Orlando is divided into 3 counties. And 3 more counties cover the outlying suburbs.
You can determine the county using the service www.getzips.com/zip.htm or similar.I’m sure everyone knows what a ZIP is, but let me remind you that this is a five-digit postal code, usually indicated at the end of the address, after the state name. In the examples above, ZIP 32828 and 32746.
On the resource above, we make sure that this is Orange County and Seminole County3) We are looking for a link to a service for determining whether schools belong to an address.
Due to the fact that the sites of all counties are different and saturated with information, it is often difficult to quickly find the way to the service. The easiest option is to type a request in Google, like: “ orange county school enrollment ” Google will helpfully slip the desired link. We go through it and fill out the form. It seems that everything is obvious here, but here the lack of a unified approach begins to affect and bugs and glitches appear. Sometimes there is sensitivity to case, extra spaces, etc.

There is also an alternative option – to find a map of school zones on the county website, but there it is often difficult to clearly define the boundaries.

Moreover, some Region2 is specified for Elementary. This means that several Elementary schools are linked to this address at once. We get a specific list by clicking on the link:
Specifically, for the 2nd region – three Elementary at once, and one of them is Magnet – i.e. with specialization.
Unfortunately, these schools usually differ greatly in quality. Parents can choose, but when places run out in a good school, lottery begins. In short, if there is a bad school on the list, and you start studying from the middle of the year, the chances are very high that you will end up in the worst one, since there will no longer be places in good schools.

4) We break through the school on rating sites. In the US, there are several popular school evaluation websites that differ in their methods. It is worth paying attention to the following:

5) Niche.com
It is Niche that many realtors are guided by when they promise “A-rated School”
However, the problem is that the Niche rating is integral and only partially depends on academic success. It can be seen that this school has A + only for diversity. The ethnic composition is implied: Latinos, Black American, etc.

Also an important indicator “Free or Reduced Lunch” is an indirect indicator of income level.

Here the score is on a 10-point scale. 4/10 – bad.
This site has the most reviews, where parents and students rate the school. This also needs to be paid attention to.
If you watch the school on 9/10 or 10/10, read the reviews carefully. Parents often complain that they put a lot of pressure on their children to get good grades. They describe bullying, etc.
7) And, finally, the least popular rating on schooldigger.
I like this site because it is the most convenient way to view academic results. The position of the school in the overall ranking throughout the state is also visible: 1451 places out of all 2118 Elementary schools in all of Florida. Badly.
Apparently, the realtor in this case tried to mislead.
Indeed at “4540 Messina Dr, Lake Mary, FL 32746” there is a small chance of getting into a good Lake Mary Elementary School, but a much higher chance of getting into a bad Wicklow Elementary.
School Digger is also interesting because it allows you to compare different counties and districts, sorting them by school ratings. Find the best schools in different sectors, etc.
With it, you can select several ZIPs for which you can already search for rent or sale on Zillow or on Craiglist.

Performance Based Funding
The Governing Council introduced a performance based funding model in 2014 to incentivize universities to improve key metrics, from graduation rates to successful graduations.
The model has four guiding principles:
- use metrics consistent with SUS Strategic Plan goals,
- reward success or improvement,
- have a few clear, simple metrics, and
- recognize the unique mission of the various institutions.
Key components of the model:
- Institutions will be assessed for either excellence or improvement in each indicator.
- Data based on one year of data.
- Quality benchmarks were based on the System Strategic Plan 2025 targets and analysis of related data trends, while benchmarks for improvement were determined after analyzing data trends for each indicator.
