Pa. mom charged with sewing shut adopted daughter’s mouth speaks: ‘I’m a good mother’

The court hearing in Washington County, Pa., turned into a litany of alleged abuse as an accused woman’s adopted, 16-year-old daughter took the stand and chronicled all the ways she had been hurt over the past seven years.

According to WPXI-TV, the girl made a series of devastating claims against the parent, Rana Cooper, including that Cooper made the girl eat cat litter and at one point used needle and thread in an attempt to sew shut the girl’s mouth.

Here are highlights of the court proceeding, which saw Rana Cooper receive bail of $100,000 and have charges filed against her husband, as well, for not stepping in and stopping the abuse, as WPXI reported:

Prosecutors said Rana Cooper forced the girl had to earn points to eat, drink and use the bathroom.

Cooper also tried to sew the girl’s mouth shut with a needle and thread and made her eat kitty litter, police said.

“She scooped cat litter with a scooper and shoved it in my mouth while holding my throat,” the girl said.

“Any time mom was yelling or choking me or punishing me, the dog would bite me and latch ahold of my arm and tear into my skin. I have scars and a big hole in my leg because of it,” the girl said.

“My dad said he was going to leave because she wouldn’t stop yelling and hurting me. My mom was mad and bit my nose, twisting my neck and dragged me across the room,” she added.

But after the hearing when Channel 11’s Cara Sapida asked Cooper if she made her adopted daughter eat cat litter, Cooper replied:

“No. I am a good mother, very good mother.”

The brutal, horrific nature of the alleged crime is still shocking Chester County, along with the rest of Pennsylvania. Three-year-old Scott McMillan died Tuesday after weeks of alleged escalating abuse that ended in three days of systematic torture – all at the hands of his mother and her boyfriend.

Gary Lee Fellenbaum, 23, and Jillian Tait, 31, were charged Thursday with murder in the torture death of 3-year-old Scott McMillan, who was Tait’s son.

“This is just evilness,” said Chester County District Attorney Thomas Hogan is quoted by the Associated Press as saying. “It is an unspeakable act of depravity.”

Indeed, Hogan called the case “an American horror story.”

How horrible? Listen to the chilling details of the police affidavits against Gary Lee Fellenbaum, 23, and Jillian Tait, 31. Both were charged Thursday with murder of Scott, who was Tait’s son.

“During one incident,” the affidavits say, “Gary hung Scott and (his older brother) up by their feet one at a time and beat the boys while they were hanging upside down. Jillian stated that she and Gary were laughing during the incident. “

Authorities also said that Scott McMillan had been whipped with a metal rod, punched and hit with blunt and sharp objects, and taped to a chair and beaten, police said in affidavits. The boy’s dead body was covered in bruises, lacerations and puncture wounds, AP reported.

Background according to AP: Fellenbaum’s 21-year-old estranged wife, Amber Fellenbaum, was charged with child endangerment for allegedly failing to help the boy.

She ultimately called 911 Tuesday night, authorities said. By then, Scott had been unresponsive for hours and had been put in a shower for more than 30 minutes by his mother and her boyfriend, investigators said.

Meanwhile, Tait and Fellenbaum went car shopping, bought pizza and engaged in sexual activity as the boy lay dying on an uninflated air mattress.

The couple met working at Wal-Mart and last month moved in together, along with Fellenbaum’s estranged wife. They lived with three children — Tait’s 6- and 3-year-old sons and the Fellenbaums’ 11-month-old daughter — in a mobile home park near Coatesville, about 35 miles northwest of Philadelphia.
