La Petite has been so amazing to my family. My infant loves coming here and her excitement everyday during drop off shows it. Her teachers are very thoughtful and are very aware of all the important developmental milestones. Being a first time mom, i’ve learned so much about milestones and care from them.

Read “The Mystery of the Secret Laboratory” – Ellis Tara – Page 2

Ellie smiled uncertainly, unsure if this was an insult or a compliment. Trish waved her hand:

– Don’t get me wrong, Ellie. I think redheads are the best. When I was little, I was worried about everything, because my sister’s hair was so beautiful, and I turned out to be the most ordinary.

When Trish turned to Cassie, Sam and Ellie exchanged glances behind her and smiled broadly. It looks like they won’t be bored at the orphanage.

– And that means you’re Cassie, the long-lost sister of my long-lost friend Lisa Covington.

Lisa grew up in Oceanside, but at the age of sixteen she moved in with her aunt after her parents died in a plane crash. And only many years later she returned here to work as a school teacher and save the crumbling family ranch. With the help of Sam and Ellie, Lisa learned that her parents had adopted her and that her half-sister, Cassie, lived in the same town with her old, ailing grandmother.

This touching story was widely shared among the people of Oceanside, and Cassie was used to getting attention. She immediately returned the greeting and laughed at Trish’s words. Before Cassie met Sam and Ellie, she was shy, but thanks to friendship, she really opened up.

– The most natural! Cassie joked, throwing up her hand in a playful salute. Ready to follow your orders!

“Well, we’ll get along well,” Trish said. – At ease, step march!

Cassie made a face and followed Trish out of the bathing room. Sam got the almost dry chihuahua out of the dryer and got only an annoyed look from him. Embracing him, she whispered an apology and hurried after Ellie.

A short corridor led them to a large room that occupied almost the entire back half of the house. It was lined with enclosures and cages, and when Trish flung open the heavy door, there was a deafening noise.

Sam saw a dozen dogs behind bars and tears came to her eyes. All dogs, from a large Rottweiler to a tiny puppy, looked sad.

“This is where our Simba lives,” Trish said, pointing to a small enclosure nearby.

Sam sat the trembling dog in place and tried to quietly wipe away a tear that had rolled down her cheek. But just as she suspected, Trish noticed.

Are you sure you can do it, Sam? she asked softly, and put a hand on Sam’s shoulder. “I know it’s painful and difficult, but we’re actually helping them. We do not euthanize anyone, the animals live with us until we find them a new home. We don’t leave anyone.

Sobbing, Sam considered Trish’s words. She examined the dogs again and noted that they were all clean, healthy and well-fed. Just the thought that she and her friends could help take care of them, walk and play, was enough to make the sadness go away.

Sam straightened up, looked confidently at Trish, and said:

– Don’t worry, I can handle it! I just haven’t seen a dog in a cage for a long time. But I understand that we are here to help them, and I am glad to participate in this!

Smiling, Trish clapped her hands.

– Well, great! Let’s get started.

She did not have time to say anything more – a girl of about nineteen entered the room, her long dark hair was gathered in a practical ponytail.

– Trish! People came to us here with a cat, which they had just taken out from under the house. Everything seems fine, but you’d better see for yourself before we take her, just to make sure the vet isn’t needed. And they also said they were looking for their neighbors dog, a little white schnauzer girl. Although I have not seen such a dog for a long time.

– Pauline, meet our volunteers: Sam, Ellie and Cassie. Girls,” Trish turned to them, “this is Pauline, one of our two employees. She is a freshman at a community college and wants to become a veterinarian. Turning back to Pauline, she pointed to the cages. “Can you introduce them to our friends while I adopt a cat?”

Trish left and Pauline didn’t have time to answer her, the four of them just stood and looked at each other.

“Well… er… nice to meet you,” Pauline said awkwardly. – We need help. I’m not even here all day. I have classes and everything. Trish tries to do almost everything herself, and last weekend Craig quit. So he was on duty on Saturdays and Sundays and came on an urgent call during the week. There is another volunteer, she comes from Monday to Friday, but that’s all. Trish seems to be hoping the four of us can get through the weekend.

– So you will be here alone on Saturdays? Ellie asked.

“Yes, but I can handle it,” Pauline replied. – I can feed everyone and all that, on Sunday we usually bathe everyone, comb out and clean the enclosures. You can’t deal with this alone.

– Can’t Trish hire someone to replace the guy who quit? Ellie asked, hoping she didn’t bother her too much with questions.

“No, and not going to,” explained Pauline, who seemed unaffected by the questions. – The city authorities have raised our rent since the beginning of the year. Then Craig demanded a raise – just when Trish found out that one of our sponsors could no longer help us. She had to say no to Craig, so he got mad and quit. Personally, I think that the tablecloth is expensive. He’s lazy. And he always behaved as if he, with his diploma in biology, was better than us, but he himself did not know how to handle animals. But still … it will not be easy to find a replacement, because we cannot pay.

– Oh well, don’t worry! Cassie stepped forward. We are happy to help and will try our best. I love animals. Do you have cats?

Pauline laughed in relief.

– Of course there is, but they are in a different room. Let’s go,” she added, and invited them to go through the door behind the enclosures. – Let’s start from here. Here we have an amazing cat named Yoda…

Leaving behind the friendly girl, Sam stroked the dog she passed. The cute mongrel licked her hand, and Sam decided that working at the shelter was worth it.

Baby blues

– I want a cookie!

Sam tried to ignore the girl hanging on her arm, but Cora insisted. She was five years old, she lived opposite Ellie, and her mother asked the girls to look after the child in the evening, because she had to work late at work. Sam and Ellie lived across the house from each other, so they were constantly at one house or the other and did almost everything together.

The kindergarten that Cora went to during the week was not far away, so her friends picked her up at five o’clock and took her to Ellie’s house. It was a Friday, they were planning a sleepover with Cassie and were hoping to start preparing for the bake sale. But it was already the beginning of the eighth, and the baby’s mother still did not come. She raised Cora alone and had no one to rely on.

“Cora, you know Mom doesn’t want you to eat sweets this late,” Sam said soberly.

Cora did not heed the voice of reason and suddenly howled, throwing herself on the floor. Not at all afraid, Sam just silently looked at the blond curls scattered across the floor. She had twin sisters who turned three in a week, so it was nonsense.

Stop it! Hunter called from another corner of the large room. He played foosball with John, Ellie’s brother, who was already sixteen years old.
