How much does a nanny cost?

If you’ve narrowed down your choice of child care options and decided that hiring a nanny is the right option for your family, you’re probably wondering: Can we even afford a nanny? As with any child care option a parent considers, it’s crucial to know up front what it’s going to cost so you can look at your budget and plan accordingly.

According to the Care.com 2022 Cost of Care surveythe national average cost of a nanny for one child averaged $694 per week, or about $17.35 per hour.

How much is a nanny?

According to the Care.com 2022 Cost of Care surveythe national average cost of a nanny for one child averaged $694 per week, or about $17.35 per hour. You can find most current average rates for nannies, depending on location and number of children, with our cost of child care calculator. But there are several other factors to keep in mind when discussing a nanny’s pay rate.

What should I factor into a nanny’s pay rate?

The cost of hiring a nanny has many variables, including where you live, what the nanny is hired to do and how much experience they bring to the position.

Geographic area

One of the biggest factors in how much you’ll pay for a nanny is where you live. Hourly rates for nannies vary widely from one community to the next. Those living in areas with a higher cost of living generally pay more for nanny services than in lower-priced areas. Competition can also be a factor. Cities with fewer experienced, well-qualified nannies will pay them more than in places where competition isn’t quite so fierce.

Here are some examples of the going nanny rates based on location, according to recent Care.com data.

Current nanny rates for top cities*

CITY HOURLY NANNY RATE
Seattle, Washington $21.50/hr
Brooklyn, New York $19. 75/hr
Washington, DC $19.00/hr
San Diego, California $18.50/hr
Portland, Oregon $18.25/hr
Denver, Colorado $17.75/hr
Atlanta, Georgia $17.50/hr
Chicago, Illinois $17.00/hr
Phoenix, Arizona $17.00/hr
Minneapolis, Minnesota $16.75/hr
Houston, Texas $16.75/hr
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania $16.75/hr
Tampa, Florida $16.75/hr
Charlotte, North Carolina $16.25/hr
Orlando, Florida $15.50/hr
San Antonio, Texas $14.25/hr

Beyond cost of living, commuting can also play a role, says Emily Dills, CEO of Seattle Nanny Network. For instance, if the nanny has to commute, Dills says, “The nanny will be taking into consideration the cost of her time in transit and mileage, especially if the hours are part time.

Looking up average nanny rates for your area is good starting place — you can always go up or down based on expected duties or nanny’s experience.

Types of duties and tasks

In addition to where you live, what you’re asking the nanny to do could also affect how much you’ll pay. Caring for more children, for example, usually means more work for the nanny, and therefore, a higher pay rate.

The specific tasks included in the job description of a nanny can change from one family to the next, says Los Angeles parent coach and nanny matchmaker Stella Reid. “[Hiring a nanny] is about making a family’s life easier,” Reid says. That can mean “things like party organization, grocery shopping, organizing, planning schedules — it can be a lot of hats for one person.”

Circumstances that might make the price of nanny services go up or down include:

  • Number of children.
  • Ages of children.
  • Driving to and from activities — typically covered in the form of using a household vehicle or paying the nanny a mileage reimbursement if they have to use their own car.
  • Household tasks, such as cooking, laundry, cleaning or dog-walking.
  • Errands like grocery shopping or picking up the dry cleaning.
  • Managing contractors or other household employees.
  • Event planning.

How much more a nanny should earn for these non-child-care tasks is between the family and the nanny, Reid says, and it should be something that’s discussed during routine pay assessments and written down in a nanny contract or workers agreement.

For those at a loss for what would be appropriate, however, Gabriela Gerhart, founder and president of Motherhood Center in Houston, said in a prior interview with Care.com that it’s fairly standard to tack $1-$2 onto the hourly rate for common household tasks like meals or laundry for the whole family.

Experience and background of the nanny

If families are looking for someone with a lot of training or background in a specific area, they should be prepared to pay more for that experience.

“Nannies with a bachelor and master’s degree, especially related to early childhood education, typically have a higher earning potential,” says Michelle LaRowe, lead educator at NannyTraining.com and author of “Nanny to the Rescue!” Nannies with specialized training or experience with niche circumstances, such as caring for multiples or children with special needs, also earn more.

How much you pay your nanny is only part of the equation. When you’re budgeting for nanny services, you should also take into consideration other costs, like nanny taxes, background checks and supplemental care when your nanny is sick or on vacation. These additional expenses include:

  • Nanny taxes: According to the Internal Revenue Service, nannies (full-time or not) are employees — not independent contractors — meaning families are responsible for not only withholding state and federal taxes for the nanny, but also covering the costs of taxes typically paid by other kinds of employers. For tax year 2022, “nanny taxes” kick in when the nanny makes more than $2,400 in a calendar year, and how much they are varies by location. If you aren’t sure how much nanny taxes are in your state, this nanny tax calculator can give you an idea of what you’ll need to pay. Note: These taxes apply even if you hired your nanny through an intermediary, like a service or website.
  • Payroll services: Some families opt to use a payroll service or accountant to manage the nanny’s paycheck and nanny taxes, which can also be an added cost.
  • Intermediary agencies: If you hire a nanny through a referral agency or nanny service, these organizations will generally charge fees to vet and recommend nannies for you.
  • Periodic background checks: Background checks for nannies prior to hiring them on, as well as on an annual or routine basis, are also an added cost. Typically, the more in-depth the background check, the higher the fee. Note: Care.com provides an enhanced caregiver screening called a CareCheck, which is included with membership. CareCheck is a good place to start, but it does not replace the safety precautions that families should take on their own.
  • Additional certifications: Families insisting that their nannies be up-to-date on CPR and first aid certifications will often pay for them to be renewed every few years.
  • Raises, bonuses and overtime: Like many different types of employees, nannies expect to receive routine raises and/or bonuses and are entitled to overtime pay (time and a half) if they work more than 40 hours per week, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. How much you should give in raises or bonuses is between you and your nanny, but LaRowe says a 2-3% cost-of-living raise, in addition to a 5-7% merit increase, is fairly standard.
  • Supplemental child care: Many families choose to give their nannies paid sick leave or vacation days. During that time, families might need to pay for supplemental, short-term child care, such as an emergency babysitter or drop-in child care, if family members are unable to fill in.

How much a nanny costs can differ widely from one family to the next, based on circumstances, expectations and experience levels. Families interested in hiring a nanny should start by looking into the costs of nannies in their area and taxes for their state and adjust their budget from there.

6 ways to cut the cost of hiring a nanny

You’ve looked over your child care options, and you’re pretty sure getting a nanny is the best choice for your family. The thing is: It’s not cheap.

According to the Care.com 2022 Cost of Care survey, the national average cost of a nanny for one child averaged $694 per week in 2021 — more than three times the average cost of a child care center and family care centers. The higher price tag leaves some families asking: How can I make hiring a nanny more affordable?

How much you pay for a nanny depends on a wide variety of factors, some of which can provide opportunities for negotiating lower rates or saving money elsewhere. And nanny contracts are highly customizable, so there are many ways to tailor an arrangement that works for everyone.

Here are a few ways you can save money while hiring a nanny.

1. Get in on a nanny share

One way families can save costs on nanny services is to pair up with another family and share a nanny. Nanny shares allow families to have a lot of the benefits of having a nanny — personalized, attentive, home-based child care — without having to pay full price for one.

That’s what Austin mom Darla Cameron decided to do. When she got pregnant with her first child, she was living near downtown Washington, D.C., where child care was scarce.

“Instead of scrambling to get on a waitlist right after I found out I was pregnant — which we knew might not work out — we decided to do a nanny share with our close friends who had a baby about a month after us and lived about a mile away,” Cameron says.

It’s a popular tactic, says Michelle LaRowe, lead educator at NannyTraining.com and author of “Nanny to the Rescue!,” especially for families looking to save money.

Sharing a nanny, however, doesn’t split the price of a nanny in half, she cautions. Nanny share setups are a lot more work for the nanny. They essentially have two different employers, and that can complicate things. As a result, nannies tend to charge more in nanny share setups than with individual families. But because families split the costs, it still ends up being less — about two-thirds the costs, LaRowe says — than if they had hired their own nanny.

2. Consider offering additional benefits in exchange for lower pay rates

Colorado mom Giorgianna Venetis-Colon knew sending her twins to a child care center would cost upwards of $3,000 a month — if they could even get in. Waitlists for two infants were a year and a half long, she says, so they opted for a nanny instead. She worked with her nanny to negotiate a lower rate, in exchange for additional employment benefits — in her case, more paid time off and allowing the nanny to bring her grandson to work with her.

In the end, Venetis-Colon ended up paying hundreds of dollars less than she would have paid for two spots at a traditional day care center.

3. Choose a nanny with less experience or fewer qualifications

Nannies with bachelor’s or master’s degrees or other certificates or specialized training are able to charge more for their services, LaRowe says. But nannies who don’t have a long list of degrees can still provide high-quality care. Families should ask themselves what their most important qualifications are in a nanny and determine what they are willing to pay more for, as well as what they can live without.

4. Take advantage of tax benefits

Many companies now offer employees dependent care flexible spending accounts (FSA) as part of their benefits packages. These accounts allow you to put up to $5,000 pre-tax in them. You can then use that tax-free money to pay for dependent care expenses like a nanny. A good estimate for how much you can save with this FSA is $2,000.

If you don’t have access to an FSA, you can still get tax breaks through federal child care tax credits. These credits often let you save up to $600 in child care expenses (for a single child), or $1,200 (for two or more children) on your tax return.

Either (or both) of these tax breaks could help save you hundreds — if not thousands — of dollars a year in federal income tax savings.

In the end, the amount of money you’ll save might work out to be pennies on the dollar you spend on child care, but it can help offset at least some of the costs associated with hiring a nanny, says Amy Matsui, director of income security at the National Women’s Law Center.

“Because child care is so expensive, families need all the help they can get,” she says. “The [child care] tax credit can play a role in making your money work smarter.”

Check out the nanny tax calculator to find out what tax breaks might look like for your family.

5. Adjust your schedule

If you really love a nanny but aren’t sure you can pay their requested rate, you may need to get creative on your end. If the nanny is open to fewer hours and there’s flexibility on your end, work with your partner, employer or a family member to adjust schedules so you can reduce the number of hours your nanny will be needed.

Maybe you and your partner offset your work schedules by a few hours in the morning and in the late afternoon, so one of you leaves earlier and comes home earlier while the other leaves later and comes home later. Or maybe a family member can do the few hours after school and before you arrive home from work. Arrangements like these can trim two to four hours a day off the hours you need child care.

6. Consolidate outsourcing

Another common way families work to lower costs overall is to look at what other services they may be already paying for, such as house cleaning, and asking the nanny if they are comfortable taking on some of those responsibilities for an additional fee. LaRowe says consolidating what families outsource into a single role — such as a nanny-housekeeper or simply a “household manager” — can help reduce costs overall.

This situation works best, she says, when the children’s schedules offer breaks in the day when the nanny can focus on other tasks, such as when kids go to school or take long naps.

Potential services some families outsource that could be offered to a nanny include:

  • Meal prep.
  • House cleaning.
  • Dog walking.
  • Tutoring.
  • Grocery shopping.

Think outside the box to trim costs where you can. Every little bit counts.

Can I Afford a Nanny?

So you’re sifting through all the various options for childcare and one thought suddenly floats across your mind: Wait a minute, can I afford a nanny?

A nanny is certainly one of the more convenient childcare options, plus the one that can be the most flexible and personalized for your family. But for some it may seem totally inconceivable cost-wise. Isn’t that something only celebrities or the very rich do?

Well, yes and no. In our survey of more than 2,000 Babylist families, about 17% had worked with a nanny, and five percent went with a nanny share. So much of it depends on the type of nanny you hire and your family’s realistic needs for caregiving (which go hand in hand of course).

17% of Babylist users worked with a nanny

The average hourly rate for a nanny is $18.66 according to the most recent Salary and Benefits Survey conducted by the International Nanny Association in 2014, but this number varies depending on the nanny’s education level, years of experience and geographic location. Not to mention the additional costs that come with hiring a nanny including: taxes, health insurance, vacation, a transportation stipend and an annual bonus.

It can all add up quickly, but don’t be intimidated. We’ll break down the different options you have for nannies, plus cover everything included in payroll so you’ll have the full picture.

The Different Types of Nannies

“Nanny” is just a general term for someone who is an exclusive caregiver for your child or children. The different types include:

Full-Time Nanny

You’ve got two flavors to choose from here: live-in and live-out. The overall duties, job description and schedule are very similar with the biggest distinction being where the nanny actually lives. So, think of these two options as vanilla and french vanilla. Closely related, but obviously different in practice.

Live-in nannies are most likely the ones you see following celebrities and their children around. A live-in nanny not only receives a salary for the full-time work they do for a family, but also room and board. They generally work the same five day schedule as a live-out nanny, but may work longer hours in a day (12 hours versus 10) and do additional work related to caring for the children, like cooking them dinner, doing their laundry, or cleaning their rooms. Most live-in nannies still stay and sleep in the family’s home on their days off, but can come and go as they please when they’re off-duty.

Most live-out nannies have essentially the same duties as a live-in with one major difference being the amount of hours per day they work and the flexibility they have in determining their schedule. Keep in mind that the nanny’s commute will affect how her work schedule will align with yours.

Cost: Nannies’ salaries are covered under the Fair Labor Standards Act, which means that they must be paid at least the federal minimum wage and may also be paid overtime for any hours worked over 40.

On average, a full-time live-in nanny’s salary may be slightly lower than a full-time live-out nanny’s (with all else being equal in terms of job duties and schedule) since you, the employer, are also providing them room and board. This generally nets out to a lower hourly rate since most live-ins work more hours per day.

Other factors to consider in determining the rate:

  • Years of experience

  • Level of education

  • Certifications (CPR, first aid training, etc. ) or Specialties (a newborn specialist or lactation consultant)

  • How many children the nanny would be caring for at once, including multiples and/or children with special needs or disabilities

  • How many “extras” (like travel) that would be included in the nanny’s responsibilities

Average salary nets to $38,000 before taxes + benefits

As mentioned, the average hourly rate for a nanny is $18. 66, which nets out to a yearly salary of approximately $38,000. This rate fluctuates depending on the years of experience, with the average rate dropping down to $14.66/hour for those with less than two years of experience, and rising up to $21.02 per hour for those with more than 10 years of experience. This also varies per geographic location. Don’t be shy about asking other local parents you’re friendly with, too.

Part-Time Nanny

This may be a nanny you only need for after-school hours daily, or two or three days a week. A part-time nanny may be part of a nanny share, or could be convenient for older children (rather than infants) who don’t require full-day care. If they’re working 35 hours or less per week, they’re considered part-time. This is different from a babysitter because you still have a set guaranteed number of hours per week, plus a defined schedule of work.

Cost: Most part-time nannies get paid the same hourly rates as full-time nannies depending on their years of experience, education and certifications. And if you’re wondering if you have to pay taxes for a part-time nanny? Yes, probably. If you’re paying them more than $1,900 in a year, you’ll have to deal with the nanny tax.

Nanny Share

This is when one nanny watches two or more children at the same time from different families. In some instances, you or the other family may already have a nanny you love, and want to start the share to cut down on each individual family’s costs (cha-ching!).

It’s up to both families and the nanny hired to coordinate the schedule, location of the caregiving (either at one host family’s house or split up between the two family’s homes) and any other important details (who will manage the nanny or how communication will work between everyone in the share agreement). It can get tricky, so make sure you pick a share family that you see eye-to-eye with on the big stuff like discipline, activities, learning methods, etc.

Cost: Typically, the hourly rate for this type of nanny is higher than one for a full-time nanny for just one family, since she is caring for more than one child. But since both families split the cost, the personal cost per family is lower. (And yes, both families are responsible for the taxes associated with hiring the nanny.)

What Else is Included in My Nanny’s Payroll?

The bottom line doesn’t just end with the nanny’s hourly rate or yearly salary. Don’t forget that you will also be responsible for:

  • Taxes. You may have heard of the “Nanny Tax.” Since your nanny is a household employee (go here to see how the IRS defines this), you’ll need to deduct taxes from his or her salary. Generally you’ll have to withhold Medicare, Social Security, federal and state income taxes, as well as pay the employer’s matching portion of Social Security and Medicare, along with federal and state unemployment insurance taxes. Tax requirements vary depending on which state you live in, so check out Care.com’s handy state tax requirements page.

  • Full or partial health insurance: This varies depending on the type of insurance and how much, but the average cost can be anywhere from $200-300 per month, depending on where you live.

  • Paid holidays: Most nannies receive about six paid holidays. They’re usually New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas, though what you offer may vary.

  • Paid Vacation: Most nannies receive two weeks paid vacation, and some families try to schedule this during a time that may coincide with other school vacations (like the weeks between Christmas and New Year’s or a week during summer).

  • Paid Sick Days: This is a less common benefit than paid vacation and holidays, but about 47% of employers offer this benefit according to the International Nanny Association. The amount offered is usually four or five days, but that is up to your discretion.

  • Holiday Bonus or Tip: Approximately one week’s salary, plus a thoughtful gift from the kids.

  • Transportation reimbursement or supplement: This varies depending on where you live. If you live in New York City, it’s come to provide your nanny with an unlimited monthly metrocard to ease her commute to work. If your nanny drives (your car or his or her own personal car) to run errands or bring the kids to school, it’s typical to reimburse gas and tolls.

While crunching the numbers, running through the different scenarios and trying to imagine what the best solution would be for your family, don’t forget this: it takes a while to get into a groove. Families said it took four months on average to feel great about their childcare situation.

Don’t put too much pressure on yourself to find the exact perfect person or scenario from the beginning. Doing the math is one thing, but finding the right care that both you and your baby are happy with is priceless.

How Much Does a Live-In Nanny Cost? – Blog

A live-in nanny is a nanny who lives in their employer’s home and provides child care. Families who opt to hire a live-in nanny instead of a live-out nanny (who commutes to the family’s home) do so for a variety of reasons.

Live-in nannies can be more available to parents who work non-traditional hours or travel a lot. Children who have special needs or require more comprehensive care may benefit from having a live-in nanny as well. And a live-in situation can make it easier for a nanny to continue to provide care in highly expensive cities.

If you’re considering a live-in nanny, here’s what you need to know about their pay and what to expect.

What you should know about hiring a live-in nanny

Providing room and board for a live-in nanny might seem like you’d get a good deal: they can work longer hours, be available more often, and have less chance of being late to work. Plus, you can charge them for room and board.

That’s where you’d be wrong.

There’s a misconception that a live-in nanny should not be paid as much as a nanny who commutes to a family’s home for work. Some families think that receiving child care in exchange for room and board and decreased pay is a fair arrangement. If your live-in nanny doesn’t have to pay for rent, utilities, or food, they don’t need to make as much money, right?

At first glance, a reduced rate for a live-in nanny seems logical, but it’s not necessarily fair. Whether your nanny is live-out or live-in, the pay should be the same. We’ll break down the expenses of having a live-in nanny in a moment, but first, let’s talk about average nanny pay in the United States.

The average base pay for a nanny depends on where you live. Demand and cost of living can drive up the price of child care; in states like New York, Massachusetts, and Washington, nannies can make anywhere from $17 to $23 an hour. In states with cheaper cost of living like North Carolina, Arkansas, or New Mexico, the average pay may be closer to $13 to $15 an hour.

You can see how pay varies in the three cities A Perfect Fit serves: the average hourly rates in Phoenix and Dallas range from $18 to $22/hour, and Denver ranges from $23 to $28/hour. A Perfect Fit holds to high standards, high-quality care, and fair wages, which is why these averages are higher than the national.

There’s another element that affects a live-in nanny’s wages: their experience, education, and certification or training. The more experience or job-specific skills your nanny has, the more you can expect to pay. The job itself will also impact your nanny’s pay. Nannies who will care for multiple children at once typically earn more. And jobs that require household duties or running errands should pay nannies accordingly.

Expenses for a live-in nanny

If you already have an extra bedroom and bathroom in your home, room and board costs for a live-in nanny won’t increase as dramatically as you might think. Other factors, like the size of your home and the cost of water and electricity where you live, already make more of an impact on your monthly bills.

Asking a nanny to live with your family benefits you, not the nanny. Remember that live-in nannies will eat, sleep, rest, and relax in the same place that they work. When the workday is over, they can’t really distance themselves from the job, physically or mentally, because they live at their job.

As comfortable and happy as a live-in nanny may be with their family, it’s not truly their home. They have to be aware of how they spend their free time, what time they leave and arrive at the house, who they invite over, and so on. If you’ve ever lived with roommates, you understand that you have to be mindful of everyone else living in the home.

Plus, many live-in nannies find it very hard to have “off hours” when they live with the children they care for. Flexible scheduling is one of the biggest benefits to having a live-in nanny, but it can also make the boundaries of their job hard to uphold.

Working with a live-in nanny

If you want to hire a live-in nanny, you’ll also need to know legal qualifications and parameters of this working relationship. Live-in nanny agreements differ by state, which is why working with a nanny agency that excels in live-in placements can help. The agency will have everything you need to stay “above board” and ensure a mutually beneficial relationship for your family and your new nanny.

When you officially hire a live-in nanny, the first step should always be to discuss schedules and boundaries. Having a live-in nanny does not mean they’ll provide child care 24/7. Determine a scheduled set of hours that your nanny can expect to work each day. At A Perfect Fit, we offer all our clients a live-in nanny agreement to guide this conversation and uphold those boundaries.

Have a plan in place if you require them during their off-hours, and offer overtime if they work more than 40 hours a week. While overtime is not required for live-in nannies in Arizona, Texas, or Colorado, we do still encourage it as an agency.

Au Pair vs Nanny – Difference in Cost of Daycare & More

Does your family need flexible and reliable childcare? If you are considering a live-in nanny, there may be a more affordable, consistent and memorable option. Go Au Pair offers American families a cultural childcare experience you do not want to miss.

For busy, modern families, Au Pair experiences are far more rewarding and affordable than live-in nannies, in many categories. From training to screening to convenience, Au Pairs provide more for less. It’s hard for any nanny to compare to the value of hosting an Au Pair.

If your family wants to find a live in nanny, I have some surprising news for you! An Au Pair experience, including the stipend, education expenses and agency fees, costs about two-thirds the average live in nanny salary. Not only that, the Au Pair Program offers so many more benefits to the entire family.

How much does a live in nanny cost? More importantly, how much is a live in nanny compared to an Au Pair?

Naturally, childcare costs vary from state to state. On average, annual live in nanny cost is between $26,000-$35,000, while the cost of a standard Au Pair for a year is under $19,900. Most live in nannies for hire would not consider working up to 45 hours per week for that price!

How much does a full time nanny cost near you? Florida and Mississippi can average as low as $12 an hour, but the average nanny salary is over $16 an hour in Maryland and Kentucky. According to ZipRecruiter, more than half US states average over $14 an hour for a nanny.

Your Au Pair expenses can be broken into three parts which still add up to less than the cost of a live-in nanny. That’s right! An Au Pair costs an average of $8.32 an hour, far below the cost of a nanny. It’s literally that simple.

First the stipend is paid weekly to your Au Pair, and starts at a minimum of $195.75. Second, the host family contributes up to $500 toward their Au Pair’s educational component, usually paid directly to the college or university. Finally, the agency fees of $8,795 can be made in payments directly to Go Au Pair.

Does training cost extra?

No. When you match with an Au Pair, he or she receives 32 hours of training at our NYC workshop. Given our recent partnership with Long Island University, your Au Pair can earn their first 3 credits too, currently held online due to restrictions.

Host families can also search our database for candidates with specific skills, like driving, cooking, or swimming. For important skills like driving, families can easily determine how long a candidate has been driving, what kind of car, even in what type of conditions. Our NYC workshop offers a driving assessment, which provides host families an objective behind-the-wheel report.

We have candidates with CPR and First Aid training, if that’s what you need. There are even specialized programs if you want an Au Pair with training and experience in the field of education. Ask about our EduCare programs.

When you hire a nanny in your local area, training can vary greatly. There is no standard “nanny” training. You may get lucky and find a person who can dedicate themselves to your kids, but there is no guarantee they have had any training at all. It is up to families to research private nanny candidates.

Who does the screening?

Go Au Pair’s candidates are screened, interviewed and background checked, with all those documents available for review by host families. We even provide a personality test so you can choose a candidate with similar interests as hobbies as your family.

Host families are able to view an Au Pair’s previous childcare experience in detail, including the ages of the kids and types of duties performed. You can easily see a candidate’s work and personal references when viewing an Au Pair profile. All Au Pair candidates undergo a physical examination and provide a physician’s report for your review too.

While all Au Pairs speak English (rated between 1 and 5), families get to choose which language and culture to share with their kids. If learning Spanish or Mandarin is important, families can search based on language, as well as many other filters.

If you choose to hire a local person to live with your family and care for your children, the screening is fully your responsibility. Most of us wouldn’t want that responsibility, or even know where to begin.

Ready for the convenience?

Families who choose the Au Pair Program enjoy the convenience of a live-in best friend and big sister. An Au Pair becomes an integral part of your family life, available to help when you need it. What parent cannot say they could use an extra set of hands at odd hours of the day and night?

Au Pairs can work up to 10 hours per day, as many as 45 hours per week, and can work flexible schedules, even split shifts. They can stay home if the kids are sick or the weather keeps them out of school. Au Pairs can even drive your kids to school, lessons or activities when you have a meeting or want to fit in a workout.

Most live in nannies are from the local area and will have a life outside your family, though it is possible to find a nanny from another country. An Au Pair is here for a year of cultural exchange and learning, with your family at the center of that experience. Au Pairs want to learn from you and your kids and improve their English for better job opportunities in their home countries. Au Pairs are a safe and convenient way to expose your family to world cultures.

To make it even more convenient, you have the support of an agency with three decades of success! Families have a dedicated Placement Coordinator at the agency and a Local Area Representative near you, ready to answer your questions and help your au pair make friends.

Compared to a live in nanny, an Au Pair is a fantastic value, both financially and logistically. The agency handles all the paperwork and sponsors the visa. You enjoy the fun and convenience of a year-long cultural exchange experience.

Parenthood isn’t easy! Having another figure in your child’s life who spends almost as much time with them as you do can be extremely helpful. Get a nanny who can understand their needs for happiness and personal growth.

The average cost of a nanny depends on many factors, but it is usually $15 to $25 per hour. Do you need help keeping your kids safe and entertained whenever you’re away or busy doing the household chores? Here’s an overview of nanny costs in the U.S. to help you set a budget.

Common types of nannies

How much is a nanny in the USA? Nanny costs depend on the kind of service you’re looking for. Here’s a list of the average costs of nanny services:

Nanny service type

$652 per week

Full-time, live-out

$705 per week

Part-time

$18 per hour

After-school

$214 per week

Night

Maternity

Nanny-housekeeper

Au pair

$200 per week

Full-time, live-in nanny

Do you know how much is a full-time nanny? When you frequently travel for work, have early morning meetings, or work at night, a full-time, live-in nanny can be a good option for you. The average cost is usually $652 per week, besides their free lodging and meals. The total charge also depends on the services they cover.

Full-time, live-out nanny

A full-time, live-out nanny is a good option when you have regular work hours but need someone to watch over your children while you’re away. While you fulfill your other obligations, your nanny takes care of your kid’s daily needs and activities. They usually work at least 40 to 50 hours per week, typically during your office hours. A live-out nanny’s cost is $705 per week.

Part-time nanny

If you only work part-time hours outside of your home or you’re a stay-at-home parent who needs some relief, getting a part-time nanny might be a wise choice. Hiring someone to meet your child’s needs for a few hours is practical. This nanny service usually costs $18 per hour on average.

After-school nanny

Your work doesn’t pause when the school bell rings, and it can be challenging to find time to drop off or pick up your kids from school. Getting an after-school nanny can make this easy for you! They can also prepare your child’s meals and snacks before going to school, transport them to and from their after-school activities, prepare their dinner, and help with their homework. They usually charge $214 per week.

Night nanny

Those nights after you just came home from a hospital after giving birth can be challenging. With your baby constantly crying at these hours, rest can be elusive. Your night nanny can come in, take care of your baby, and help you get your much-needed sleep. Their service usually costs around $200 to $250 per night.

Maternity nanny

You can hire a maternity nanny who can come to your home after your baby is born and assist in the first weeks or months of their life. They can be a full-time, live-in nanny. But since they’re specialists, their service costs $35 per hour.

Nanny-housekeeper

A nanny-housekeeper does not only take care of your children, but they also help you with household chores like cleaning, cooking, ironing, and organizing. They can either be full-time or part-time, depending on your needs. The average cost of their service is $18 per hour.

Shared nanny

If you need someone to take care of your child and ensure that they still get to socialize with other kids, a shared nanny might be an ideal option for you. Sharing a nanny with another family also means dividing the costs, usually $6 to $13 per hour and family.

Au pair

An au pair is a young person, generally between 18 and 30, who comes from a foreign country. They can provide nanny duties and light housework in return for lodging, meals, and $200 per week.

While there are several types of nannies, all of them can take care of your child in your home. If this is not the ideal setup for you, you can get a childminder who can look after your kid in their own setting. Plus, getting a nanny is usually a long-term engagement. If you only want a short-term caretaker who can watch over your child for a set period, like when you’re out on a date, hiring a babysitter might be the best option for you.

What other factors affect the cost of nanny services?

Other things affect the costs of nanny services. Some of them are as follows:

  • Your location

Large, urban locations often have higher costs of living, leading to higher salaries. This is true for a nanny’s pay as well. For example, expect to pay more if you live in a big city on the East Coast, such as Boston, than if you reside in a small Massachusetts town. See the price list by state below:

State

Price per hour

Maryland

$20

Massachusetts

$20

New York

$20

Washington

$22

California

$23

  • Your nanny’s experience

Nannies with more than three years of experience charge more than those just starting. You’ll need to consider the experience and talents you want your nanny to have, as well as how those will affect how much you’ll pay them.

  • Cover for when your nanny is sick

If your nanny gets sick, you need to give them sick pay and find a temporary replacement until they can return to work.

  • Taxes

You’re also responsible for paying your nanny’s taxes. Social Security and state unemployment taxes are examples of this.

I enjoyed working with a 5.5 year old boy. In addition to looking after him, I plunged into the world of childhood, we played different games, walked and rode down the hill together, sculpted a snowman, played snowballs. I cooked food, we ate together. She worked from 8.00 to 20.00 every day, sometimes on weekends she helped his mother out for a few hours. Then he and his parents left for the USA, we still communicate via Skype, we are friends.
Then I worked with two children 1.3 years old and 3 years old. I accompanied them with my mother for walks, it took 1.5-2 hours.
Next experience with girl 9-ty years. I met her from school and spent time with her from 13.00 to 21.00. She fed, did homework with her, did extra work, taught her to play badminton, escorted her to an English language school. Although I speak English myself, my parents thought that it would be better for her to study in a special school. They were wealthy people (restaurateurs), so we often had lunch or dinner in a restaurant, we didn’t have to cook.
I would like to work with a child at least 5 years old, part-time, preferably with a boy, do not work on weekends.
If necessary, you can combine babysitting and English lessons.

Before you start looking for a nanny, decide on: the salary for which you can invite her. Salary depends on the workload, duties and qualifications.

Currently, the average cost of a nanny-educator in Moscow ranges from 1.5 to 5 dollars per hour. The average cost of the services of a qualified nanny-educator with the education of the required profile and work experience and a family from Moscow or the Moscow region is no less than $ 2.5 per hour.

The lower the load, the more expensive the services. If you take a full-time nanny, then it makes sense to set a fixed salary, in some cases this is the most convenient form of calculation. A full-time nanny’s salary can range from $250 to $800 per month. It should be noted that recruitment agencies set a minimum salary of $300-$350 per month, or $2. 50 per hour.

A full-time nanny will cost you $500-800 per month. And the services of a nanny working daily cost from $ 30 per day. The most difficult thing is to find a nanny-educator who agrees to work on a non-standard schedule – in the evening or morning, part-time on Sundays, several days a week. This mode of operation may be of interest to either pensioners or people who need a side job, as well as people living very close.

Nanny’s duties and work schedule

Nanny’s duties are determined by the parents. For some, it is important that the child is simply not at home alone; someone wants the baby to easily speak three languages at the age of three. Based on parental fantasies (within reason) and their financial capabilities, you need to look for an employee. Let’s designate the main requirements for nannies, dividing them into groups.

For babies and one-year-olds, a nanny with a medical or pedagogical education is suitable, observing the prescribed daily routine, monitoring hygiene, preferably knowing the basics of massage and early development techniques. If the mother is busy all day, then the nanny can visit children’s medical institutions, follow the baby’s vaccination schedule.

By agreement with the parents, the babysitter’s duties may include cleaning the baby’s room, washing and ironing his linen, and preparing food for him. All this must be discussed additionally and recorded in writing, since not every nanny agrees to an additional, from her point of view, work. If you think that the nanny should be busy with something during many hours of sleep, you can agree for an additional fee on cleaning the apartment, cooking for the owners, washing and ironing common linen.

A baby of one and a half to two years old is more likely to need not a nanny, but an educator. In this case, a woman with a pedagogical education and experience in kindergartens will help. The nanny-educator must observe the daily routine, monitor the children’s things and the room, carefully observe hygiene and accustom the child to it. She can take and bring the baby from the kindergarten, visit hospitals, various circles with him. The nanny-educator must know the teaching methods, engage with the child: sculpt, draw, develop fine motor skills of the hands, his memory and speech with the help of games. Nanny’s housework must be negotiated separately.

Babysitters can work in different modes. Choose the most convenient for you:

  • Full day, for example from 8 am to 7 pm.
  • Partial day, for example from 8 am to 2 pm.
  • Several times a week.
  • A few hours for walking, accompanying the child to sports clubs or developmental groups.
  • Night work schedule (remember that it costs more!).
  • Living in your home.
  • If you need a nanny for more than 10 hours a day, it makes sense to invite two nannies with a six-hour work schedule or offer them to work every other day.

Where to look for a nanny?

Only after we figured out how much we will pay the nanny and what she will do, we can proceed directly to the search. It is best to do this a couple of weeks before the expected date of entry into work. This will make it possible to choose the best candidate and stay with the new nanny for several days together in order to understand what kind of person she is, how she treats the child, whether he likes her.

Search through friends

This is the best option, but quite rare. If you are lucky and the nanny was handed over to you “by inheritance” by good friends, then do not forget to ask them about her advantages and disadvantages.

Search through ads

The easiest way to find a nanny is by ad. This method is the cheapest, but also the most time consuming. First you need to write the text of the announcement, which should indicate the age of the baby, approximate duties, area of residence, work schedule and salary level in case it is not very high. Announcements can be given in the newspaper, posted on the Internet on specialized sites or hung out at kindergartens, schools, children’s clinics, near the subway, etc.

Expect the majority of those who apply will not meet your requirements. There is another disadvantage – in case of illness or vacation of the nanny, you will have to look for another one, also on your own. It is better to build a telephone interview with a potential nanny according to the following scheme.

  1. Name the amount you plan to pay the nanny if you didn’t specify it in the ad, or ask how much she estimates her services.
  2. Please advise the area in which the nanny will be working. Be sure to find out in which area she lives and how long and by what transport she will get to you.
  3. Be sure to ask about education, work experience, recommendations of the future nanny, whether she has teaching methods.
  4. Don’t forget to ask if the nanny has children, how old they are and who will take care of them if they get sick.
  5. Tell us what kind of work schedule the nanny will have. Ask if she agrees to it.
  6. If the potential babysitter suits you, tell the job seeker about your responsibilities. It is best to write them down on a piece of paper so as not to forget anything. Discuss the possibility of additional employment on weekends and holidays.
  7. At the end of the conversation, be sure to ask if everything suits her. If you get along over the phone, set up a face-to-face meeting.

At the meeting, read the letters of recommendation and references. Without regret, weed out those who obviously do not suit you. Be prepared for the fact that out of the ten ladies invited for an interview, only three will come, who may also not be suitable. Do not despair. Keep searching.

Search through agencies

In this case, you are also not insured against anything. Many recruitment agencies specializing in the selection of nannies and tutors promise clients that all candidates for the position of a nanny undergo psychological selection, testing and training. Undoubtedly, large firms that have proven themselves on the positive side for a long period of time on the “recruiting” front can afford all of the above, but small agencies often; are limited to obtaining a medical book from candidates. Before contacting an agency, ask how many years it has existed. Find out how people who have already dealt with him speak about his work. Try to find an agency on the Internet, ask questions on specialized sites. As a rule, mothers, faced with a bad agency, rarely write laudatory reviews, but never miss an opportunity to denounce negative ones.

Let’s say that you liked the agency and decided to use its services. To do this, you need to call the agency and leave a preliminary order, in which you indicate all the requirements for a future nanny. Be sure to tell us what kind of worker you need to find, in what area, on what schedule, what he will have to do, etc. Most likely, the manager himself will ask you questions that will make it possible to select exactly the person you want. The more information you give to the manager, the less useless meetings with applicants will be.

After talking with the manager, the agency starts looking for a suitable worker for you. This process usually takes 2-5 days. Remember that pre-ordering does not oblige you to anything! If you decide to choose a nanny proposed by the manager, then the agency will conclude an agreement with you for a certain period, during which it undertakes to select or replace (went on vacation, fell ill, did not go to work, just did not suit you) staff for our baby. In this case, ideally, all your requirements and wishes should be taken into account. During the agreed period, you have the right to contact the agency for free advice, through it to resolve conflict situations with the nanny, to demand her replacement. For their services, the agency usually charges the equivalent of a nanny’s monthly salary, or some fixed amount.

The contract specifies the working conditions, the main duties of the agency and the nanny, the work schedule, the degree of responsibility of the employee, the procedure for paying for the employee’s services, etc. Also, you get all the information about the chosen candidate, passport data, information about registration and place of residence.

Unfortunately, not all agencies verify the authenticity of the diploma, recommendations, medical certificates and other documents of their applicants. Therefore, you may have to do it yourself. After the conclusion of the contract, you can assign a trial period to the nanny in order to take a closer look and understand how it suits your baby. If during the trial period the nanny did not disappoint you, she will continue to work with your child, in case of failure, you can replace her with a new one.

What is a trial period?

The choice is made, but you don’t know how the baby will accept such a major change in his life. The ideal option is to spend several days or weeks together: a child, a nanny and one of the parents. Thus, you will be able to control the work of the nanny, and the baby will get used to the appearance of a new person in the house and will no longer be afraid to be alone with him. Calm down and you, realizing that the nanny gets along with the baby. But if this is not possible, then carefully observe the child: how he looks when you return home, how energetic, tired or depressed he is, how clean he is washed, what he is wearing.

Pay attention to the nanny. How she behaves at the end of the working day, whether she looks tired, irritated, or vice versa, calm and cheerful. Isn’t she overjoyed at your arrival? What does she say about the past day? Ask about the achievements of the baby, about his behavior. If there is no doubt about the professional abilities of the nanny, then you can safely conclude a contract for a longer period. If contact with the nanny fails, or it seems to you that she does not perform her duties well enough, deceives, gets annoyed, etc., then start the search again.

At first, no matter how experienced the nanny is, she needs our instruction. Tell us about the habits and characteristics of the baby, about how best to calm him down, what he likes in the game. Do not forget to show where the baby soap and washcloth is, where the change of clothes is stored. Instruct the nanny how you prepare the mixture, what the crumbs are allergic to, what he likes, and what he will absolutely not eat. Set a strict condition that, in addition to the specified products, the nanny should not give the child anything. Be sure to leave in the most visible place a list of emergency phone numbers for parents, the police, doctors, etc.

Immediately discuss the conditions for the arrival of friends, acquaintances and children of the nanny to your house. Show the babysitter places to walk. Explain where she categorically should not go. Specify places for games in the apartment. The nanny must ensure that there are no sharp corners, breaking, piercing and cutting objects, household appliances, open sockets, wires, electric lamps and heaters. Teach the nanny how to use household appliances, a chair, a stroller.

The nanny is responsible for ensuring that all chemical detergents are put away in a safe place. She should also know where the first aid kit is located and be able to provide first aid to the child. However, she should not try to treat the child on her own in case of his illness, but is obliged to call a doctor and contact the parents. If the baby needs to be given any medicine, put it separately, write down the dose and method of administration next to it. Set a strict condition: without your permission, the nanny does not give the child anything other than what was agreed in advance.

Do I need a close relationship with a nanny?

Relationships should not be built in such a way that the nanny feels like a member of the family. This has more cons than pros. It is more difficult for close people to give instructions, demand discipline from them, and resolve controversial issues with them. It is necessary to keep a distance, to call it on “you”.

Don’t tell your nanny about your life and problems in order to avoid unpleasant consequences if the nanny turns out to be too talkative. Do not talk about expensive purchases, do not brag about new things, do not discuss the routes of the upcoming vacation, so as not to cause envy.

Establish a reward system to monitor babysitting. It can be additional paid days off, bonuses, gifts. Talk to her about penalties for being late, absenteeism, etc. If you do not want the nanny to disappear one fine morning, remember that politeness, honesty in calculations, punctuality of parents are the main requirements that homeworkers value most.

The work of a nanny is very difficult and very subtly tied to human relationships. The better your relationship with the nanny, the better she feels with your child. Remember that the task of parents is to create optimal conditions for the child to grow and develop. And the coordinated interaction of parents and the nanny is the key to success.
