September 2009 in Brooklyn with the approval of the relevant
government agencies open New York City’s first charter school
with a “Jewish bias”: Hebrew Language Academy Charter School (HLA).

March 2009 at the Kings Bay Y Community Center
press conference at which the leaders of the future school: director
Maureen Gonzalez-Campbell and Vice Principal David Guedzelman, and
representative of the charitable foundation Steinhardt Foundation,
sponsored the opening of the school, Elie Skaap spoke about their project.

As of September 2009, New York City’s first “Jewish-inclined” charter school opens in Brooklyn, with government approval, the Hebrew Language Academy Charter School (HLA).
On March 13, 2009, a press conference was held at the Kings Bay Y community center at which the leaders of the future school: Principal Maureen Gonzalez-Campbell and Vice Principal David Gedzelman, as well as Elie Skaap, a representative of the Steinhardt Foundation, a charitable foundation that subsidized the opening of the school, spoke about their project.
HLA will be located in the 22nd district in South Brooklyn and will be available to children living in Sheepshead Bay and some other areas around it. Initially, it will have three junior classes and three senior classes – 25 students in each class, a total of 150 people. Over time, the number of students is expected to be increased to 450. The school will be attended by children up to the fifth grade. Each class has two lead teachers, one of whom will teach Hebrew.
HLA – a privileged school with an extended day (from 8 am to 4 pm) and, accordingly, a year – up to 190 days, which is somewhat more than in regular schools. The school will teach English, mathematics, natural and social sciences, as a result of which students will receive education in the field of art, music, modern technology, as well as physical education. At the same time, Hebrew, Jewish history and culture will be taught at the school, information about modern Israel and the Jewish communities of the countries of the world will be reported. At the same time, the school will not be religious.
Education at school will be free for all students, the level of their previous education is not specified. Transport will be provided for children living far from school. But due to the limited number of places and, as the survey showed, a much larger number of applicants, in order to get into the school, you need to win your chance in the lottery. To participate in the lottery must be no later than April 1, 2009fill out and send the questionnaire to the school office. A sample questionnaire is available on the school’s website, which, along with its postal and email addresses, is given at the end of this article. The school will be accepted, first of all, those children who live in the 22nd district. In the future, preference for admission will be given to those children whose brothers or sisters are already in school. The opening of the HLA is part of a linguistic program in which 70 schools of the city take part. The project participants answered questions from Russian-speaking journalists.
Questioner: What will be the ethnic composition of the students?
Answer: In principle, any boy or girl can study at school, regardless of their native language and religious affiliation. A preliminary study showed that among the applicants there are a lot of children from families of Russian-speaking immigrants.
Question: Is there an objective need to open such a school?
Answer: There are a lot of people who want to learn Hebrew. It must be borne in mind that there are more than 70 bilingual schools in New York, where Spanish, French, Greek, Chinese, Arabic, etc. are studied along with English. Now Hebrew will be added to this list. A second language accelerates and enriches the education of children.
Questioner: What are the requirements for new school teachers?
Answer: There are criteria approved by the educational authorities that teachers of all schools, including ours, must meet. In addition, our teachers must be fluent in Hebrew.
The press conference was attended by co-executors of the project: COJECO Director Roman Shmulenzon, President of Kings Bay Y Leonard Petlakh and HIAS Program Manager Gene Borsch.
Address: Hebrew Language Academy Charter School, 244 Madison Ave., Suite #2130, New York, NY 10016
