Camp Isola Bella American School for the Deaf

A Treasured Summertime Tradition:  Camp Isola Bella

Camp Isola Bella has brought happiness and joy to countless campers over the past 46 years, and ASD is looking forward to the 2023 season!

The camp’s philosophy, “learning through experience,” is put into effect in three ways:

Self-esteem and a positive attitude come from having successful social experiences with peers and lots of friendly encouragement from the staff. We provide specific situations that are designed for each camper to set goals and challenge themselves while discovering their own skills and abilities. At the same time we provide opportunities that stimulate the development of each camper’s self esteem. Specific knowledge and skills are taught with a “learn by doing” approach.

Physical fitness is developed through sports and recreation programs, fostering campers’ emotional, physical and intellectual growth.

A wide range of activities are offered to provide appropriate challenges for the wide range of skills and interests campers bring to the island. Campers will keep up their skills and learn many new ones through our fun leadership and literacy activities that are woven throughout the program.

Owned and operated since its beginning by the American School for the Deaf, Camp Isola Bella follows the School’s American Sign Language/English Bilingual approach to communication, which incorporates American Sign Language, speech, reading, writing, and the use of assistive hearing technology. Staff are willing and able to meet campers where they are to provide the best summer camp experience for each child. This approach minimizes communication barriers so students and staff can focus on having fun and learning together. Children of Deaf Adults (CODAs), as well as children with deaf siblings are also welcome to attend Camp Isola Bella!

Caucasian Knot | Tent camp “Bella” ceased to exist

Caucasian Knot | Tent camp “Bella” ceased to exist

October 01, 2003, 18:26

On October 1, the “Bella” tent camp located on the outskirts of the village of Ordzhonikidzevskaya in the Sunzhensky district of Ingushetia ceased to exist de facto and de jure. Today, the last two tents have been moved from the former TAP “Bella” to the neighboring town of Chechen refugees “Satsita”.

According to Akhmed Lyanov, commandant of the “Bella” camp, all the inhabitants of the town (more than 150 families) are currently accommodated, at their request, in TACs on the territory of Chechnya and Ingushetia.

“Each person individually decides where to live. All temporarily displaced persons leaving the Bella camp receive food debts in accordance with existing standards,” the acting director said in an interview with a local television correspondent. Ivan Nikolaevich Pomeshchenko, head of the UDM of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Ingushetia. At the same time, he recalled that the return of people takes place exclusively on a voluntary basis, and there were no complaints about the actions of the federal authorities and representatives of the Department of Migration of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Ingushetia from the resettling citizens.

The Bella tent camp on the outskirts of the village of Ordzhonikidzevskaya was established in the autumn of 2001 and was considered one of the largest centers of compact residence of Chechen refugees in Ingushetia.

Initially, according to various sources, from 5 to 6 thousand temporarily displaced persons from the Chechen Republic lived here. There were two schools and two kindergartens on the territory of the camp.

Officially, the Bella temporary accommodation center ceased to exist on September 1 of the current year after the corresponding order of the Head of the FMS I. Yunash. However, the intervention of representatives of international humanitarian missions dealing with the problems of internally displaced persons in the territory of Ingushetia, as well as local human rights organizations, delayed the liquidation of the camp for some more time. After last Friday, by special order of the President of the Republic of Ingushetia Murat Magometovich Zyazikov, the gas supply was resumed in the camp, it seemed that the situation was completely resolved successfully. However, from 29On September 30, attempts to disband the camp resumed, and on September 30, the leadership of the UDM RI announced the final closure of the camp.

Meanwhile, internally displaced persons complain that they have not yet been provided with normal living conditions in the new place – gas and electricity have not yet been supplied to the tents set up on the territory of the Satsita town.

According to local human rights activists, the action with the closure of the “Bella” camp is only the first step towards the forceful liquidation of the points of compact residence of Chechen refugees on the territory of the Republic of Ingushetia. On October 1, residents of the LogoVaz TAC in Nazran already applied to the office of the Chechen Committee of National Salvation, who, according to them, were informed by the Head of the regional migration service, A. Tomov, about the upcoming closure of this TAC.

How a girl from Milan came to her native Caucasian village to make a creative camp for Nogai children there, who interfered with her, who helped and why it is important

– Ruslan, what do we have for tomorrow?

– We will make masks.

– What do you need for this?

– I don’t need anything, I have everything.

– Patya, how was jiu-jitsu?

– With little ones not very much, they do not concentrate and scatter.

– I suggest making lunch early tomorrow, otherwise the younger and middle ones do not reach 12:30.

— There was a failure with the Georgian lecture, of course, they do not accept slides and presentations, this is no longer possible.

– Tomorrow Masha will arrive and start doing theater with the children.

– We need to think about how best to distribute the theater into groups.

— Bel, eh Bel, where do we throw away plastic bottles?

– Batal, in the same place as everything else. Oh, it’s a pity, we don’t have separate waste collection in the village. Pat, let’s make an impromptu lecture about ecology with you? Let’s call her eco-Patya. Or an eco-party. And in general, I dream of making a big block about ecology. But that’s for next year.

– Bella the dreamer.

Bella

“I urgently need a bus, I urgently need a bus. I didn’t collect money from the world bit by bit to pay 21 thousand for a bus. It’s too much. We need to come up with something else.” Bella starts scrolling through contacts on her phone and thoughts in her head about who to ask for help with the bus. A night excursion to the observatory in Arkhyz is one of the points of the program of the children’s creative school “Balapanlar”, which was invented and organized by 28-year-old Bella Shakhmirza.

According to Bella, the suicide bomber who exploded at the Istanbul airport a year ago, according to one of the versions, was from Ikon-Hulk, a neighboring village: “He studied to be an auto mechanic, he seemed to be a normal guy, and then contacted these, said, that he went to Surgut, but in fact to Turkey.

The suicide bomber who exploded at the Istanbul airport a year ago, according to one version, was from Ikon-Khalk, a neighboring village

Ruslan traveled from Moscow on a ride for almost a day: “And I would have traveled the same amount, I love to travel.” But even more, he loves children. For almost twenty years, Ruslan has been working with children, teaching them how to draw, going to camps as a counselor in the summer, and doing a lot for orphans. Now she works in the “Workshop of Mama Carlo”, before that for many years – in the charitable foundation “Children of Mary”. He has a twin brother, and they both grew up in an orphanage. They never had a father, their mother drank, and until the age of three they were raised by their grandparents. Then the strength and pensions were no longer enough, and the brothers were sent to an orphanage in the Moscow region.

“I remember that time as the happiest in my life,” says Ruslan. “We had a wonderful director who truly loved children. At the same time, I never thought that I would take care of children myself. Only after the army I accidentally came to visit the boss, and his children hung on me so much that everyone around said with one voice that I was a born educator. And I myself suddenly felt so natural and good with them.”

“Rus, and a sticker for me!” – “Ruslan, is my mask beautiful?” – “Rus, when will we start painting the wall?” – “Rusik, look how I made a juggling ball out of rice!” Children stick to tall Ruslan, and he manages to answer them all, and it seems to everyone that he is his best friend. “I don’t know what I would do without you, Rus,” Bella tells him every day.

“Have you seen my backpack?” – almost crying, asks Arthur, or Aturiki, as everyone calls him. Aturiki is one of Bella’s nephews, he lives with his mother in Stavropol without a father. He came to his native village for the summer. Aturiki is reserved, gets tired of a large number of people, likes to go into a corner and never part with his red backpack. Nobody knows what he wears in it. “I didn’t see it, but let’s go look. You have to ask Ruslan, he probably knows.”

“I have a bunch of active boys and a few very obedient girls in my group. Farida is a wonderful gymnast, she always takes my hand and asks: Well, how do I do my exercises, okay? Aisha is smart, obviously an excellent student and wants to become the president of Russia. And I am generally delighted with Astemir. This is Batal’s street friend, he is nine years old, he is four heads taller than his peers. Smart, insightful, but just as restless. On the first day, he was silent and shy, but now every day he opens up more and more, and guitar lessons simply transformed him. I think he has talent. The only one who doesn’t fit in there is Denis. I will think about what to do with him,” says Patya.

Pati’s full name is Patimat. She is an Avar, born in the Dagestan mountain village of Tlyarosh, then moved with her mother to Makhachkala, and graduated from the last grades of school in Moscow – she persuaded her to let her live with her relatives. In Moscow, she studied at the Academy of Foreign Trade, worked in large companies, was engaged in logistics, and then went to study in Italy. Graduated from the Master’s program in non-commercial project management and conflictology. While I was studying, I worked there, among other things, in children’s camps. When Bella told her about her idea, she decided to come help without hesitation.

She got the middle group, seven to nine years old. Every evening Patya says that she is like a squeezed lemon, but the children are a delight. “Patya, how old are you”? Batal asks. “What do you think?” – “52”. “How you flatter me, dear! I’ll probably go to sleep,” and Patya takes a book about neural networks and goes to his room. “What did I say? Does she need more?!” Batal looks around in surprise at the adults in the kitchen. “With such an ability to make compliments, you will be successful with girls, I can see directly,” Bella laughs.

But not everyone in the village supports Bella. Not everyone likes her secularism, life in Milan and the desire to change the lives of children in the village. “On the second day of work Balapanlara the deputy head of the Nogai district arrived with the words What are you up to here and who allowed ”, ,” says Bella. – And after half an hour, people appeared who introduced themselves as FSB officers, and they say, they say, we learned that you have foreigners here. Fortunately, there were no foreigners among us, and they left. I know that a lot of people don’t like me here, but that won’t stop me.”

“On the second day, the deputy head of the Nogai district arrived with the words “what are you up to here and who allowed it””

“Have you ever been called names?” Anzor asks Liza a question. Anzor has a speech impediment, and it is difficult to understand him the first time. “Yes, of course, and I was upset. We must rely on the support of relatives and not be angry at others, even if they are wrong. “Did you immediately set yourself the goal of achieving everything?” Anzor continues. “It is better not to set yourself great goals at once, but to move step by step. Gradually, overcoming their complexes one by one. Every little success gave me the strength to keep going. So believe – and you will succeed.”

It is difficult for Anzor to speak, but, unlike in a regular school, here they listen to him and try to understand him. “Anzor, dear, come on, now slowly and clearly try to repeat every word to me,” Masha tells him. Anzor tries and from the third time says almost clearly: “And this monster, like a wolf, flew in and killed the sheep every night.” “Great! What you need! The monster will be very useful to us!” Masha rejoices.

Masha

– She ran into the room and saw an old closet!

– Okay, next one.
