Geography and climate

BRISTOL is located on the south-west of England on the Aivon River. The city is located on the border of Somerset and Gloucestershire on the shores of the Gulf of the same name of the Atlantic Ocean. Bristol lies on limestone hills and has a temperate maritime climate with warm summers and mild winters.

History

During the Roman period, a military camp was located on the site of the modern city. After the arrival of the Angles, these lands were called Brycgstow, which translates from Old English as “a place by the bridge.” In the 11th century, a powerful castle was built by the Normans at the crossing of the Avon River. The city itself was founded in 1155. Thanks to its convenient harbor, Bristol quickly developed into a prosperous port.

Streets of Bristol

In the 14th century, Bristol became the third largest and most important city in England after London and York, thriving on the wool trade with Spain and Portugal. During the English Revolution, the city was besieged by parliamentary troops. A new stage of Bristol’s prosperity came in the 17th and 18th centuries, when the Bristol port became the center of the slave trade. Local sailors took slaves from Africa to the North American and Caribbean colonies.

Streets of Bristol

Bristol remained the most important British port until the end of the 18th century. With the onset of the Industrial Revolution, the focus of trade began to shift towards Liverpool and Glasgow. This was also facilitated by the prohibition of the slave trade. In the 20th century, Bristol became a major center for aircraft manufacturing and high technology industries.

Old Port

The Old Port is one of Bristol’s most important historical sites. This is the oldest British harbor, which is a real symbol of the city. Here you can see fragments of the great maritime past: ancient port buildings, a steam crane (the oldest such surviving structure in the UK) and sailing ships, made in the style of historical authenticity. Many warehouses and harbor buildings have been converted into modern cultural facilities: museums, galleries, exhibition halls.

Bristol Cathedral

Bristol Cathedral is a magnificent masterpiece of English Gothic, which was built over six centuries. The site was originally an Augustinian abbey church. Between 1298 and 1330, construction began on the modern cathedral. By the 16th century, the central tower and transepts were completed. The nave and the western facade were completed only in the 19th century. The gate was built in 1170 for the abbey of St. Augustine.

Church of St. Mary Radcliffe

St. Mary Redcliffe is one of the most beautiful parish churches in England, built in the 13th century in the style of Gothic architecture and restored in the 15th century in the Baroque style. The church is located on the south side of the floating harbor and represents the wealth of the Bristol merchants.

Bristol Old Town

Bristol has a magnificent old town that reflects its rich history and contains many interesting sights and monuments. The historic center has developed over eight centuries and includes examples of architecture from the Middle Ages to the present.

Llandoger Trow

Llandoger Trow is a beautiful half-timbered building built in 1664. This house was carefully restored in 1991.

Church of St. Stephen’s Church

St. Stefan is one of the most interesting religious buildings in the old city, notable for its magnificent 46-meter tower and the tombs of wealthy merchants. This building was built in the 15th century on the site of an earlier church from the 11th century.

Church of St. John-on-the-Wall

Church of St. John-on-the-Wall is a medieval parish church built into the city walls. This religious building was built in the 14th century and is famous for its vaulted crypts. The gate, on which the clock tower was built, was part of the city fortifications in the Middle Ages and served as an entrance to the city. On their southern side are statues of the legendary founders of Bristol.

Christmas steps

Bristol have scored 32 goals in nine games, while Hull’s closest pursuers are three goals short. It is the Robins’ attack that is now the most productive in the league and has already scored 18 goals – one more than that of the leading Sheffield. Five balls rolled Tommy Conway, four – Nucky Wells, three – on account of Anthony Semenio and Andreas Wyman. Andreas Wymann scored 22 goals last season, becoming not only Bristol’s top scorer, but also one of the league’s top scorers. There were also experienced Nucky Wells and Chris Martin, who also know how to score more than ten goals in a season. However, at the start of the season, Bristol surprised us. Against the backdrop of the crisis, the largest sellers of food and consumer goods (FCMG) have reduced the pace of expansion of retail space. In the first half of the year, their assets grew by more than 1 million square meters. m, which is 13.5% less than a year earlier. In January-June, the selling space of the 200 largest chains of food and fast-moving consumer goods (FCMG) increased by more than 1 million square meters. m, calculated in Infoline. Year on year, the growth rate of new space decreased by 13.5%. The contribution to the opening of stores of the ten largest players also decreased. They accounted for 69.5% of the growth against 72.3% a year earlier. According to Infoline estimates, the share of discounters in the structure of new openings increased from 60. 1% to 60.9 over the year%, convenience stores — from 11.5% to 11.8%. The share of supermarkets decreased from 10.5% to 10.1%, hypermarkets – 17.9% to 17.1%.

General Director of Infoline-Analytics Mikhail Burmistrov notes that after the outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine and the wave of sanctions, all major retail chains decided to reduce investment in new openings and renovations of stores in the face of uncertainty and a sharp increase in the cost of retail equipment.

According to him, now the retail market is again moving into a growth phase, and in the second half of the year we can expect a more favorable situation with the opening of new outlets.

Magnit became the leader in terms of retail space growth in the first half of the year, expanding its asset portfolio by 271.3 thousand sq. m. m. Torgservice Group (Svetofor and Mayak chains), which occupied the first place in terms of dynamics a year earlier, almost tripled the increase in retail space, to 164,000 sq. m. m, dropping to third place. The area of X5 Group stores (Pyaterochka, Perekrestok, Karusel, Chizhik) increased by 229.7 thousand square meters. According to Mikhail Burmistrov, the dynamics of Magnit is also associated with the effect of local M&A transactions implemented at the end of 2021. Thus, Magnit agreed on a long-term lease of 56 stores under the Edelweiss brand in Kazan, as well as 58 Radezh outlets in the Volgograd and Rostov regions. At the same time, Mr. Burmistrov notes, Torgservice Group had problems with supplies, which led to a shortage in some positions, a decrease in the share of promotional sales, and as a result, the closure of more than 100 facilities as part of the optimization. But, the expert adds, today we can talk about the restoration of the activity of the Svetofor and Mayak networks. In Torgservis, Kommersant did not answer.

Magnit says that they are focusing primarily on the development of their main format — convenience stores. In the first half of the year, the company opened about 560 such facilities and will launch several hundred more before the end of the year. In addition, the company representative added, the network is actively investing in the development of My Price discount stores, which already have about 400 points, and by the end of the year the number may increase to 500-600 objects throughout Russia.

X5 Group promises to continue opening Pyaterochka convenience stores and Chizhik hard discounters, whose development was decided to be accelerated. This year, the company intends to open more than 400 Chizhik stores compared to the previously planned 300 outlets, which will expand this network to 500 facilities in 11 regions, a spokesman for X5 Group said. Lenta says it will continue to open convenience stores and also intends to improve the operating model of hypermarkets and supermarkets. O’Key Group of Companies is also increasing its activity in opening Da! discounters.

JosDeVries The Retail Company consultant Irina Bolotova says convenience stores and discounters are better suited to consumers’ growing demand for saving money and time when shopping for essentials. In her opinion, in the near future, large networks will focus on updating outdated, but traffic-generating points.
