Tampa Bay is not the team of the city, but of the whole bay. Her first home was St. Petersburg – a place with a Russian history – Young Hockey – Blogs

Informative page.

An interesting fact: one club from St. Petersburg fails to qualify for the Gagarin Cup final for three consecutive seasons, while the other club reaches the Stanley Cup final for the third year in a row…

“Stop, what?”.

Yes, you read everything correctly. But, apparently, one cannot do without an explanatory team. nine0005

I’m talking, of course, about Tampa Bay. The club is really based in the city of Tampa, but generally located in one large agglomeration on the coast of the bay of the same name. In addition to Tampa, it includes two more cities: St. Petersburg and Clearwater.

That is why the club is not called “Tampa Lightning”, but “Tampa Bay Lightning” – officially it does not represent any particular city, but the entire bay (“bay” in English). Of course, among all its cities, St. Petersburg (Saint Petersburg – spelling is identical to the English name of the Russian city) looks the most interesting: firstly, this is an important part of the history of “lightning”, and secondly, this place is really connected with Russia. nine0005

Lightning Stadium might not have been built in Tampa, but in St. Pete. Esposito insisted on the first option

St. Petersburg – not a strange city for the team. The Lightning spent three seasons here at the Thunderdome, before building Amalie Arena, which has hosted their home games since 1996.

Until the 90s of the last century, there was no hockey in Tampa Bay in principle, and two groups claimed this place as the home of a possible new NHL club: Peter Karmanos / Jim Rutherford and Phil Esposito. The Boston legend and his teammates were willing to pay more to enter the league, and they won the race. nine0005

But in order for the not yet existing club to earn at least something in the future, it was necessary to turn people who are far from hockey into fans. This is exactly what St. Petersburg helped, as Phil Esposito writes in his autobiography (translation – Andrey Osadchenko), the founding father of the team:

“In the summer of 1990, we still heard negativity from the league. They just said: “We are not sure that hockey will take root in Tampa Bay.” To show how popular hockey can be there, we paid St. Petersburg half a million dollars to host an exhibition match at the Suncoast Dome (Sports.ru) between Pittsburgh vs. Mario Lemieux and Los Angeles vs. Wayne Gretzky. . We sold front row tickets at 99 dollars. The match took place on September 28, 1990. We even printed stickers saying “Hockey. Now in Tampa Bay.”

But finding a spacious arena on the coast of a small bay turned out to be even more difficult for the team that had already appeared than to interest the fans. At first, the Suncoast baseball was not allowed in – Esposito even had to swear at St. Petersburg officials:

“I was struggling to find an arena for a new hockey team in Tampa Bay. We wanted to play at the Suncoast Dome, which was built in St. Petersburg for MLB, and so far no one has played there. I met with Rick Dodge, the member of the city government who was in charge of this arena. I talked about our plans and asked if we could rent it.” nine0005

At the end of this conversation, Esposito swore at Dodge, who demanded to name the team’s potential investors. The Tampa never received an arena in St. Petersburg – but they will receive it for their second season in the NHL (the debut Lightning was held at the Florida Expo Hall).

For three years the team played in the Suncoast Dome, which was renamed Thunderdome for this, but there was no talk of the team eventually settling in the city. Esposito himself writes more about this: “We were offered to build an arena right next to the Thunderdome, but we refused. To tell the truth, we did not believe that hockey would take root in this arena. And we didn’t want to stay in St. Petersburg. In Tampa, the demographics were significantly better. Hockey fans are mostly people from 29up to 65 years old. And in St. Pete, most of the inhabitants are from 45 to 65. In addition, St. Petersburg has already reached the limit in its development. There was no room to expand. The whole city was already built. And because the Tampa Bay Buccaneers football team was doing so well, fans from St. Petersburg were eager to drive to the other side of the bridge in Tampa for games. We decided that since people go to football, they will go to hockey.”

As a result, big hockey left St. Pete, but the club’s functionaries completed the main task: they popularized hockey throughout the region and expanded their own market. nine0005

The city was founded by a Russian landowner who built a railroad in the USA. A coin toss helped with the name

But the history of St. Petersburg itself is much more interesting. In 1850, Pyotr Dementiev (who in America will be known as Peter Demens) was born in the Novgorod province. He owned a large estate and was even the chairman of the zemstvo council of the Vesyegonsk district. But at the beginning of 1881, Dementiev went bankrupt and moved to St. Petersburg.

He didn’t stay long in St. Petersburg either. In the same year, Emperor Alexander II was killed – tension in the country increased sharply. Dementiev could also get it, who was accused of having links with the People’s Will (a revolutionary organization that staged an assassination attempt on Alexander II), but the former landowner emigrated to the United States in time. nine0005

Initially, Dementiev was engaged in logging in Florida – he made sleepers for a railway company. Soon she went bankrupt and paid Demens with her own shares. Then Peter got the idea to build a railway 240 km from the St. John’s River to the Gulf of Mexico. On June 8, 1888, the first train ran along the new railway line.

New settlements immediately began to appear near the new transport route. One of them is connected with the American John Williams, who was originally from Detroit: in 1876 he bought land in Florida – a new railroad just passed by these territories. Williams and Dementiev became good friends, deciding to establish a small town near one of the stations. nine0005

Each of them wanted to give their name, which caused a dispute between them. According to legend, they tossed a coin – Dementyev won, deciding to name the new city of St. Petersburg in honor of St. Petersburg, which became his native. Williams named one of the hotels in it “Detroit”, paying tribute to his homeland.

American Petersburg was not the only city that Dementiev gave the name to. Another tiny settlement near the railroad was named by him as Odessa.

An American city is connected with Russia not only by name: a small Tsarskoye Selo railway station is being built there, and a rocket was “aimed” there

St. Petersburg has something else in common with our country. Since 2002, American St. Pete and our St. Petersburg have been sister cities (cities cooperating culturally and socially).

These points on the map have one more connection: the first railway station in St. Petersburg was very similar in architectural terms to the Tsarskoye Selo railway station in St. Petersburg – as if it were a smaller copy of it. And this similarity is not surprising – this station was built by Dementyev. By the way, the locals did not forget about one of the founders of the city, and at 19In 77, a monument to Peter Demens was erected.

The most embarrassing mention of St. Petersburg in the context of Russia happened during a message from President Vladimir Putin in March 2018. Then he spoke about the latest strategic weapons, while demonstrating several videos. In one of them, the end point of the rocket is St. Petersburg.

Right now, not only Megan Fox lives in St. Pete, but also a huge number of Russians. It is in Florida that the largest Orthodox community in the United States is located. Walking here, you have a chance to stumble upon a couple of Orthodox churches. nine0005

The Tampa and Colorado series is hot on its own, and now continues in the city with the highest number of sunny days per year – 360. Let’s see if a little connection with Russia will help Kucherov, Vasilevsky and Sergachev turn this final .
