Green Elementary School in Bowie, Maryland

We are proud that our Primary School is a certified Green School. The work needed to execute the initiative was a collaborative effort between faculty, students, parents, the Holy Trinity Church and partners in our community.

Summary

As soon as visitors drive up the hill onto the grounds of Holy Trinity: An Episcopal School, they notice unmistakable signs that environmental learning is a core to the school’s philosophy. On the way in, they will pass beautiful trees, each identified with name tags and cared for by the students. Nestled in between the trees is our nature trail, that attracts birds, butterflies, and deer. As visitors walk along the path of the nature trail they can admire the native perennials, shrubs, and grasses.  “It’s Easy to Be Green” with our school’s vegetable garden gracing the outdoor learning space across from our quaint chapel. Emerging from under our U.S. A. flagpole is our new international tulip garden surrounded by student made bird feeders.

In the front lobby, a bulletin board declaring that “Kids at Work: Recycle” highlights the Green Team activities and displays pictures of students learning about the environment every day. A 6-foot poster in the hall informs the students which classroom’s bird feeders are being displayed in the tulip garden. Assorted trash bins (plastic and paper) in each classroom remind students the ways to recycle. While, signs in the bathrooms and classroom remind students of ways that they can conserve water and electricity. And these are just special, visible projects that the Green Team has undertaken. What is happening quietly in every classroom daily is an increased emphasis that our students’ have a vital role to play as “environmental stewards” and a change in thinking that, though it constitutes just a small corner of the planet, our school can be an example of how small changes can contribute to a healthy community environment.

Since Holy Trinity: An Episcopal School started working towards becoming a Green School, faculty, staff, parents and students now have support and organization behind their ideas to further the positive environmental impact on their community. This application reflects our Green School accomplishments from academic year 2014-15 to present. We are proud of the changes we have made in our students’ and community’s understanding of and respect for the environment. We hope you enjoy reading about our accomplishments.

Curriculum and Instruction

Environmental Issue Instruction

  • 1st Grade: Exploration of our Urban Forest
  • 1st Grade: Earth Day
  • 2nd Grade: Vermicomposting
  • 2nd Grade: Raising Painted Lady Butterflies
  • 3rd Grade: Planting Fall Bulbs
  • 4th Grade: Outdoor Gardening

1st Grade: Exploration of our Urban Forest/MD Forest Service Junior Forest Ranger Program ( Science)
A year-long unit, 1st graders enjoyed ‘adopting’ a tree in our schoolyard and monitoring the changes it underwent throughout the changing seasons. Students collected and identified autumn leaves. They discussed and identified the different attributes of the leaves and trees. Each month students visited their trees and made observations on the changes they saw by drawing and writing brief reflections. Hiking in the school woods helped students to understand the ways trees grow to adapt to their surroundings. By the end of the year students were able to identify deciduous and conifer trees and relate the products and benefits of trees. The unit culminated with being awarded the Junior Forest Ranger Award by the Maryland Department of Forestry.

2nd Grade: Vermicomposting and Raising Painted Butterflies (Science)
Second graders spent the months of January through May tending worms for vermicomposting! They diligently recycled food scraps from their lunches to feed the worms and recorded the status of the worm bin daily. Students learned about worm’s habitat, diet, and behaviors through a series of observations and hands-on activities. The rich soil produced by the worms was added to plants grown in the garden. Students made observations about worms and what they ate, documenting their findings.

Students cared for butterfly larvae and monitored the physical changes they went through to become a caterpillar, chrysalis, and ultimately a butterfly. They learned about the parts of a butterfly, its diet, how it camouflages, and differences from a moth. The unit culminated with the release of the butterflies.

3rd Grade: Planting Fall Bulbs (Science)
As part of their outdoor science studies, 3rd graders collaborated with our community partner to plant tulip and daffodil bulbs on school/church property. Extending this unit of study, students made observations of bulbs forced for indoor blooming and compared results with those that grew outdoors.

In the fall of 2017, 3rd graders are participating in Journey North Tulip Test Gardens to be a part of an international monitoring of seasonal changes. Students made detailed observations and entered their findings into an international database.  Students were then able to partner with another school which gave them an opportunity to compare their findings with other places around the globe. Students enjoyed collaborating with 3rd graders at a school in Anchorage, Alaska to compare their findings.

4th Grade: Outdoor Gardening (Science)
Students develop a deeper understanding of the world around through the involvement with the school garden; our outdoor living science classroom. Preparing garden beds for fall planting by tilling the soil and adding mineral rich nutrients to the soil, students learn where their food has its beginnings. Next, students measure for planting and assemble seed tapes in preparation for planting.  After planting, students make weekly observations noting changes in weather, soil, and signs of germination. Students follow their seed’s growth through its life cycle; sampling some of the harvest, sharing the harvest, and leaving some plants to go to seed for next year’s planting. Students expand their studies to include insects and animal in the garden as well as food nutrition.

Professional Development

Teachers were informed of school’s intent to become a Green School at April 5, 2017 Faculty meeting.  Holy Trinity Primary School has a total of 27 faculty members teaching classroom and special areas. Faculty members are becoming increasingly involved with professional development to further enrich our environmental awareness.

Systemic Partnership

  • Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Bowie, MD
  • Boy Scout Troop #403, Bowie, MD

Holy Trinity: An Episcopal School Primary Division’s “higher” or central level of support is the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. The Holy Trinity Church supports the school through allowing use of the church gardens and grounds as outdoor environmental learning areas. Mr. Tom Sykes, Chair of the Buildings and Grounds Committee at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, supports student engagement by mentoring students in the vegetable garden and newly created tulip garden. Through this partnership our students have worked in the church/school garden raising vegetables. Mr. Sykes arranged for students to have their produce donated to the local food pantry. The Holy Trinity Episcopal Church furthered support of the school’s gardening project by their partnership with the Episcopal Diocese in Washington, DC. On October 27, 2017 Holy Trinity Primary School was featured in the Episcopal Diocese of Washington Bulletin with article “A Garden Grows in Bowie”.

Boy Scout Troop #403 supported Holy Trinity School by tilling the soil for the school’s tulip garden. Thanks to the scouts’ support, 3rd graders planted tulips and were able to participate in an international scientific study monitoring seasonal change through Journey North.  Mr. Sykes Holy Trinity Church liaison with Boy Scout Troop #403 provided continued mentorship of students throughout the planting and growing season.

Green Day Celebration

Number of Students:  Entire school student body: Grades 1-4: 168 students
Others in Attendance: Rev. Leslie St. Louis, Mr. Tom Sykes, Faculty, Staff and Parents
Date:  Thursday, October 19, 2017 and annually thereafter

Prior to our first annual Green Day Celebration, our school community was encouraged to wear green and to bring a lunch in reusable containers on Thursday, October 19th.  In addition, each class designed and decorated a bird feeder out of a recycled milk jug.  Students used recycled milk cartons or yarn to create individual bird feeders decorated with cereal and sunflower seed to take home after our celebration. A bird feeder post was installed in a newly created Tulip/Daffodil garden on the Holy Trinity Lower School campus by our community liaison, Mr. Tom Sykes.

Our beautiful fall school day ended with a dedication ceremony around our new Tulip/Daffodil garden. The students, faculty, staff, Mr. Sykes, Reverend Leslie and parents gathered around the new site. Songs were led by our music teacher.  Four fourth grade students served as masters of ceremonies.  Student representatives from each grade level (1-4) recited a poem. Reverend Leslie blessed our bird feeders and the new post and garden site.  Mrs. Falk, our school director, recognized Mr. Sykes for his help to install the bird feeder post and selected from a jar the names of the four classes whose bird feeders would be first to be hung on the posts.  As our activities may change from year to year, we aim to establish a Fall Green Day to kick start involvement in year-long programs to promote caring for our Earth.

Community Partnerships

Warm Nights

Each winter, the school works in collaboration with the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church to support the Warm Nights Program. The Warm Nights Program annually gives shelter and a variety of assistance to homeless individuals and families during the winter. First and second grade students create Earth friendly place mats, blankets and scarfs to welcome the participants of the Warm Nights program and beautify Parish Hall when dinners are served.

Read to Feed (Heiffer International)

The students participated in a “Read to Feed” fundraiser and collected $2,755.36.  Our students elected to put these funds toward the gift of an Ark, changing the world two by two. The Heiffer International organization works with individual farmers in impoverished areas to promote economic self-sustainability and good health. They teach the farmers to be self-sufficient so they reproduce the animals so they can their knowledge to be passed on to other villages, creating a chain reaction.

History

19th century

Bowie owes its existence to the railroad. In 1853, Colonel William Duckett Bowie received a charter from the Maryland legislature to build a railroad line to Southern Maryland. In 1869, the Baltimore & Potomac Railroad Company began building a railroad from Baltimore to Southern Maryland terminating at Popes Creek. The area already had small farms and large tobacco plantations, and the economy was based on agriculture and slavery. In 1870, Ben Plumb, a land speculator and developer, sold the building lots around the railroad junction and named the settlement Huntington City. By 1872, the line was complete, along with a “branch” to Washington, D. C., and the entire line through Southern Maryland was completed in 1873.

In 1880, Huntington City was renamed Bowie in honor of Colonel Bowie’s son and business partner Auden Bowie, former governor of Maryland and then president of the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad. Developers first subdivided the land into more than 500 residential lots to create a major urban lot at the junction of the Baltimore and Potomac Main Line to south Maryland and a branch line to Washington, D.C.

20th century

By 1902, Baltimore and the Potomac had been bought by the powerful Pennsylvania Railroad. The second railroad entered the community when at 1908, the Washington, Baltimore and Annapolis electric trolleybus began operation. Large intercity carriages brought rapid transit to the area, and trains ran hourly. Bowie area stations included High Bridge, Hillmead and the Hippodrome.

The convergence of the two railroad systems prompted the Agricultural Society of Southern Maryland to build the Bowie Racecourse in 1914. The track has established the Belair Stud as one of Maryland’s premier areas for thoroughbreds. Also at 19In 14, a teacher’s college, or an ordinary school, as it was then called, was built near the city for African Americans. It has now become Bowie State University. The City of Bowie was incorporated in 1916.

Belair in Bowie

In 1957, the firm of Levitt & Sons purchased the nearby Belair Estate, the original colonial plantation of Maryland Governor Samuel Glazey, and developed the residential community of Belair in Bowie. Two years later, the city of Bowie annexed the Levitt property and then re-incorporated the now larger area into the city in 1963 year. The vast majority of Bowie residents today live in this 1960s-planned community by Levitt, whose street names are in alliterative parts. . Levitt & Sons has long banned the sale of homes (including resale by owners) to African Americans, leading to protests during the 1963 Bowie civil rights movement.

Belair Estate

The original Belair Estate contains the Belair Mansion (circa 1745), a five-section Georgian house of Governor Samuel Ogle and his son Governor Benjamin Ogle. It was bought in 1898 by wealthy banker James T. Woodward, who, after passing away in 1910, left it to his nephew William Woodward, Sr., who became a famous equestrian. Renovated to reflect its 250-year heritage, the mansion is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Belair Stable on the estate was part of the famous Belair Stud, one of the finest stables of the 1930s, 40s and 50s. Owned and operated by William Woodward, Sr. (1876–1953), it closed at 757 after the death of his son Billy Woodward. Belair was the oldest continuously operating breed horse farm in the country.

21st Century

Bowie has 16 square miles (41 km 2 ) and about 50,000 inhabitants, with nearly 2,000 acres (8.1 km 2 ) set aside for parks or open space. It has a 72 ball field, three community centers, an ice arena at Allen Pond Park, the Bowie Town Center, an 800-seat Bowie Performing Arts Center, a 150-seat theater theater, a golf course, and three museums.

The history of the railroad town of Bowie is on display at the Huntington Railroad Museum, in the restored railroad buildings of the local railroad station. In 2006, the city reopened the Bowie Building Association, a small brick and block building built around 1930, as a welcome center; It was originally the home of the Bowie Building Association, which helped fund much of the community’s early development.

Bowie is home to the Bowie Baysox, an AA Eastern League professional baseball team affiliated with the Baltimore Orioles. The Baysox moved to Bowie from Hagerstown at 1993 and started playing at Prince George Stadium in 1994. In 2015, the Baysocks won their first Eastern League championship by defeating the Reading Fighting Filts in five games.

The city operates a center for the elderly and a gym for community programs.

    History

In 1950 a permanent building was built, [14] in stages. Beginning in the 1980s, the district planned to repair or replace the building, but there were delays as PGCPS resources were diverted to schools that needed to be built or schools that had more serious problems. At 19In ’99 PGCPS decided that Bladensburg High would get a new building instead of a renovation. [15] Prior to 2001, the school building was infested with insects and rats, prompting PGCPS officials to make its replacement a priority. [16]

The $45 million project was scheduled to begin in January 2001 and was originally scheduled to run until around 2003. In 2000, officials searched the campus for temporary student accommodation. It was originally planned to send students to the former Northwest High School building, but the Hyattsville City Council did not approve of this as it felt that the Bladensburg students would be too close to the Northwestern students who already occupy the current school building. The second choice was a building in Bowie, but around 100 Bowie residents protested the plan at a city hall meeting; [17] Several Bowie City Council members said the controversy created a negative image for Bowie. [18]

Bladensburg High was temporarily relocated to the Belair Annex in Bowie, a former school building used by the PGCPS to house excess students from other schools; [19] The residents of Bowie hoped to use the extension to offload local schools that had many students. [20] By 2002, the district planned to install 18 trailers in Belair to accommodate additional students. [19] Trailers were 22 later, then 38. The opening of the new Bladensburg High school was pushed back from 2004 to 2005, and a growth in enrollment far in excess of the original school’s capacity required additional construction, sapping the patience of the surrounding neighborhoods of Bowie, on which were affected by additional buildings and movement. In addition, Bladensburg students wanted the new campus to be completed as they felt the temporary facilities were inadequate. [16] The new Bladensburg High opened in August 2005. [14]

In April 2011, Bladensburg High School received three first-place awards, making Bladensburg schools the number one contenders in communications, science, technology, engineering, and math.

Bladensburg High School appeared in several media presentations in 2011 for its work with the DREAM Act; Awards in Communication, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics; Secondary School Reform Courses; Nobel laureate William Daniel Phillips’ physics presentation at school; and win the Foundation Grammy Award for Excellence in Music.

Bladensburg High School graduated as a Gates Millennium Scholar in 2009 and the first Posse Foundation Fellow in 2011.

    Demographics

Bladensburg has undergone significant historical change in the demographics of its students. When Bladensburg High School opened in the mid-1930s, all students were white. Due to the desegregation of public schools across the country in 1954 and later, due to population changes in Prince George’s County as a whole, student enrollment is now 49% African American and 49% Hispanic.

    Programs

In 2011, the school was one of only two in the district with day care; there were also classes for young parents. [21]

    Curriculum

Bladensburg High School offers programs of study in biomedicine, culinary arts, cosmetology, agriculture, and nursing. For the past two years, the school, along with its primary middle and elementary schools, has participated in the National Communications, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics competition in Houston.

Historical background

Sacred Heart Church was better known as White Marsh after a long stretch of sandy loam between the church and the Patuxent River and the marsh. This soil contains a significant amount of mica, which appears sparkling white. [1]

Beginning with the Protestant Revolution in Maryland in 1689, Catholics were prohibited from holding public worship and the Catholic Church was not allowed to own land. [2]

The original patent for the White Marsh property was issued by the authorities to Charles Calvert II in 1722 to James Carroll. [3] On February 12, 1728, Carroll bequeathed 2,000 acres (8.1 km. 2 ) of White Marsh, then known as Carrolls Burg , to the Jesuits at St. Thomas Manor in the vicinity of Port Tobacco, Maryland.

At that time, although Catholics could not worship in public, they could do it privately and could build private chapels on private land. To facilitate the construction of the church, Carroll left the land to individual Jesuits. This allowed them to build Mission St. Francis Borgia in 1722 [4] on the site believed to be the foundation of the Sacred Heart Church. George Thorold took over the property in 1729 under the will of James Carroll. [5] The building on which the Church of the Sacred Heart would be built was then designated. White Swamp Plantation. The Jesuits lived on the plantation as private individuals and carried out missionary activities in the surrounding area. Jesuits living on the White Swamp plantation, including the Reverend John Lewis and John Ashton, brought in slaves to work on the plantation. [5]

The Jesuits did not settle permanently in the White Swamp until about 1741, when the chapel was built. [1]

Old Chapel

Belfry was added in 1876.

Old Chapel is the only Catholic church built before the American Revolution in Prince George’s County. [6]

The current chapel building was built on a hill around 1827 at the eastern end of the original chapel, and built of raw stone with a gabled roof. [6] In 1853, a fire destroyed the interior of the building, but left the stone walls. [6] By 1855 the interior had been rebuilt. [6] In 1876 a wooden belfry was added to the church at the eastern end of the pediment. [6]

Surrounding land

Adjacent to the chapel is a large cemetery with tombstones from 1830. [6]

Elm Street Development contracted to purchase 154 acres of land around the chapel from the Roman Catholic Clergymen’s Corporation, which has owned the property since 1728. Carrolls Burg by John Carroll. [7] A developer is trying to rezonate the land and build 440 single-family houses, but is facing resistance from the local community. [7]

New Church

A much larger modern brick church was built at the foot of the hill overlooking Maryland Route 450 and dedicated in 1969 [6] to accommodate Bowie’s height due to Levitt & Sons development, “Belair at Bowie”, where most of its current parishioners live. [8]

General chapters organizing the Catholic Church in the USA

After the American Revolution, Catholics in the newly created United States enjoyed freedom of worship. The Jesuit Fathers, led by John Carroll and five other priests, began a series of meetings at White Marsh beginning June 27, 1783, called General Chapters, which organized the Catholic Church in the United States. [8] [9]

They held a second meeting on November 6, 1783, and a third meeting on October 11, 1784, at the same place, when they formulated the draft rules binding on all the clergy of Maryland. At these meetings it was decided that each priest should receive an allowance and receive thirty pounds a year, and each priest agreed to celebrate ten masses for each priest who died there. It was at this meeting that the assembled voted for John Carroll’s name to be included in a petition sent to the Pope to appoint Carroll to office, which eventually led to Carroll becoming the first Roman Catholic bishop in the United States. 9 a b John Carroll.
