While your child’s 1st birthday may have involved little more than party hats and a smash cake, the ante must be upped when they turn 2. Not only is your little one more active and more social this year, they’ve also developed their own unique set of likes — three things that make for a perfect guest of honor!

Before you send out the invitations for your toddler’s big day, consider these helpful 2-year-old birthday party tips.

Cater — literally — to 2-year-olds

If there’s one thing toddlers unanimously love, it’s snacks, so be sure to have plenty of safe and nutritious foods available for munching.

“When it comes to toddler birthday parties, parents should keep the food simple, healthy and accessible to children,” says Dayna Tolley, owner of Party On! Events in Texas. “Cut-up fruit, yogurt cups and finger foods like chicken nuggets or tiny PB&J sandwiches always work well.”

Be sure to find out if any kids attending have food allergies, so you have options available for them, as well.

Time it right

Remember, most 2-year-olds still nap, so be mindful of the time you’re scheduling the party.

“For an optimal experience for all, the party should be scheduled midday, sometime after their nap,” says Jordan Stringfellow, owner of Jordi & CO Events in Southern California.

Stringfellow notes that when a party is too close to naptime, party guests — as well as the birthday boy or girl — may get sleepy and cranky.

Another timing issue to keep in mind? Attention spans!

“Two-year-old birthday parties should be short, as toddler attention spans are short: Two-and-a-half to three hours tops is plenty, which should include free play, some activities and cake,” Stringfellow says.

Keep it interactive

While 2-year-olds will be delighted to see classmates and other people they love, don’t expect them to entertain themselves — or be too still.

“At 2, the attention span for crafts isn’t quite there yet, so interactive entertainment is usually the best bet,” says Tolley. “Anything that adds a fun and unique touch for guests, such as balloon artists, bounce houses or costume characters, is sure to be a hit.”

“Stations that allow toddlers to play together are great, but make sure there is one of each item per child, so territorial crises don’t ensue,” says Stringfellow. “Also, each game or center should be run by at least two adults: one running the game and the other tending to the children so that they take turns.”

Keep it contained

Parents of toddlers know to keep an eye on kids at all times. Nonetheless, it’s important to keep the party area safe and well-secured since this age group is always on the go.

“Whether you’re having a home-based birthday party or renting space at an indoor venue or outdoor park, keep your space well-defined, and make sure at least one parent is staying to tend to their children,” says Stringfellow. “Toddlers are constantly on the move, and the pressure for the hosting parents to keep all the kids safe is huge.”

Pick what your child loves and stick to it

Be it a favorite book, show or activity, all 2-year-olds have their thing — use it.

“Choose a theme based on whatever captures your child’s imagination most,” says Stringfellow. “Then, carry that theme throughout the party from the invitations to the favors to, of course, the cake.”

1. Petting zoo

“A petting zoo is always a huge crowd favorite with this age group,” says Tolley.

And if you’re worried about ponies traipsing over your azaleas, don’t. There are plenty of small-scale petting zoos (think bunnies and chicks) available for kids’ parties.

When it comes to 2-year-old birthday ideas, it doesn’t get much better than a bounce house. Jumping up and down in a soft, colorful structure for an hour straight? That’s any toddler’s dream.

Bubble parties are super cute and super easy — and there’s more to them than just soap and water. In addition to blowing and chasing bubbles, kids (and adults!) can pop bubble wrap. Talk about a sensory sensation.

Turning 2 is a major milestone for toddlers (and their parents), but that doesn’t mean your 2-year-old is going to want an extravagant birthday celebration. Toddlers just want cake to eat and shiny things to wave about, and they want to run free and laugh at nonsense. Which is why paying top dollar to rent a space for them just doesn’t make sense.

Bring the party to your home, and come up with a theme that requires little more than a creative look into your gear closet or a quick trip to the supermarket. Bug Party

Kids love bugs. Why? It’s unclear. But the rational fear that keeps them from just picking up spiders and beetles just hasn’t taken effect yet at this age. So take advantage. Spread some fake bugs throughout the backyard (or around the house, for that matter) and have a contest to see who can find and collect the most “bugs.” You can take the theme further with bug-inspired treats, butterfly nets, and firefly jars to hand out.

Garden Party

Need some help in the garden? Luckily, toddlers love to “help. ” Buy a few planters and some seeds and let kids plant fruits, veggies, and flowers together however they like. Then, let each kid have a small planter to take home and watch grow.

Flower Party

Go buy a few discounted bouquets at your local market and take them apart. Sort the flowers by type and let kids “create their own” bouquets that they can take home. Bonus points if you have flower-themed treats.

Your toddler’s second birthday is coming up and you want to celebrate. But how? Read on for advice and party tips for 2-year-olds.

What can I expect at a toddler’s birthday?

At 2, kids are mostly concerned with their own needs and wants. That’s just how the world looks to 2-year-olds (and it doesn’t mean they’re spoiled). Things are likely to go more smoothly at a party with good adult supervision, not too many guests, and reasonable expectations.

At the age of 2, your child may be clingy one minute and freedom-seeking the next. While he happily plays alongside other children, your child won’t yet understand the give and take that’s a necessary part of interacting peacefully with other kids.

This means the party isn’t really about inviting other kids for your child’s enjoyment — that matters more as he gets older. It’s more about celebrating with people who are important to your family.

Because your toddler can’t yet put himself in another child’s shoes, he may hit, bite, or snatch toys from his guests. If you think this may be an issue, arm yourself with strategies for heading off aggression and encouraging sharing.

As he gets a little older, your toddler better understands how others think and feel and can behave accordingly.

Who do I invite to a toddler’s birthday?

You probably have close family on your list and you may want to invite one or more other toddlers and their parents. An oft-quoted rule of thumb is to invite two children for your child’s second birthday, three for his third birthday, and so on. A good approach to determining the length of the guest list is to think about how your toddler has reacted to large and small gatherings in the past, and choose the size party you think he’ll be comfortable with.

What’s the best time to have a toddler’s birthday?

Most children this age still take an afternoon nap, so take that into account when scheduling the party. You probably want to pick a morning or late afternoon, and keep it short and sweet — an hour or two is ample time for toddlers and parents alike.

Where’s the best place to have a toddler’s birthday?

Home is generally the easiest place to throw your child’s party, but if you have a lot of guests or your home isn’t the ideal place for hosting, you might want to try arranging an event at an indoor play area, a park, a local recreation center, a gymnastics school, a kids’ museum, a church hall, or a restaurant. Some places do most of the party organizing for you, for a fee.

Is it a good idea to have a theme for a toddler’s birthday?

It’s not a necessary ingredient, but many 2-year-olds are thrilled by a party theme based on a favorite character, toy, or animal. (If you’re mainly feeding adults, it’s easiest to plan a simple meal for them that can be fed in small pieces to the children, too.)

Keep in mind that choking is still a risk at this age, especially if your little one is gulping his food in a hurry so he can get back to playing. Avoid foods like nuts, whole grapes or cherries with pits, marshmallows, hot dogs, and round, hard candies or gum.

You need enough highchairs or child-sized tables and chairs to accommodate all the kids. If that’s too much trouble, consider having a “picnic” on the floor.

Food is bound to be spilled, so put a blanket or tablecloth down first. Spill-proof cups are a great idea, too.

What are the best activities to have at a toddler’s birthday?

Most toddlers love dressing up, so you might want to have a box of clothes or costumes handy. Simple games or activities that kids can follow your lead on, like Ring Around the Rosey or dancing to music are good ideas, too. Toward the end of the party, you can read the kids a story in an effort to calm them down a bit before they head home.

It’s smart to have a few activities planned, but don’t worry if the kids end up brushing them off in favor of playing with various toys or bouncing from one thing at the party to another.

What about goody bags at a toddler’s birthday?

By the age of 2, guests appreciate a little goody bag. There’s no need to spend much — low-cost favors like crayons, plastic animals or figurines, matchbox cars, plastic bracelets, bubbles, or stickers will provide plenty of excitement and amusement.

How long should a toddler birthday party last?

The first thing to do when planning out your party is the schedule.

A toddler birthday party only really needs to last for 2 hours max. Any longer and you will start encroaching on nap-time and end up with some cranky tots! 

Two hours gives you plenty of time for games, snacks, cake and presents if you want to open them at the party.

Most parents know that a toddler party isn’t really the occasion to arrive “fashionably late” so you should prepare to start more or less on time. 

When is the best time for a toddler birthday party?

I have always found that the best time for toddler parties is the morning.

Everyone is fresh and there is less risk of those dreaded late-afternoon meltdowns. Both my children napped from 1-4pm (yes, I have unicorn sleepers, I know! You can read my sleeping tips here.)

Because of our long afternoon naps, the traditional 2-4pm parties never worked for us and any later just gets difficult with early dinners and Bath times. 

From polling my mom friends, we have found that a 10am-12pm seems ideal for the 2 and 3 year old age range.  

Sample Toddler Birthday Party Schedule

10am – Everyone arrives. Free play, get settled in. 

10.20-11am – Games and activities (see below for 15 great birthday party games)

11am – Snack and cake. I do snack and cake together because it can be hard to get the kids sitting down for long. 

11.30 – Presents or free play

11.45– Get the birthday boy or girl to hand out the goodie bags and thank all the guests. 

12.00pm – Party ends

Fantastic Birthday Party Activities for 2 Year Olds 

1. Musical Bumps 

Dancing on its own is a fun activities for toddlers but it can get extra fun if you add in a simple game like musical bumps. 

Games like freeze dance or musical chairs can be a bit complicated for little ones but musical bumps just involves sitting down on the floor when the music stops. The last one to sit down is out. It’s easy and kids love it. 

I have even found with really small children, you don’t even need to eliminate anyone for the game to be hilarious to them. 

2. Sleeping Bunnies 

Sleeping bunnies is another fan favourite with the 1.5-3+ crowd.  It’s so simple but can be played for ages with different variations on the bunnies. 

You can sing the song while the children sleep and then they all jump up and hop around the room. For the next round, pick a child to choose the animal. 

3. Bubbles 

Bubbles are always a huge hit at a toddler birthday party. They love chasing them all over the place. 

If you are having a backyard party, you can set up a bubble machine so you don’t even have to do any work but for indoor parties, an adult supervising and blowing the bubbles might be best. 

4. Parachute

You are probably familiar with parachutes from daycare or the classroom – they make a great activity for a children’s birthday party as there is so much you can do with them.  

You can buy your own parachute for cheap on Amazon  or even use an old bedsheet cut into a circle.

A few parachute ideas:

• Have all the children hold onto the parachute and put a few balls on the top. Get all the kids to shake the parachute to watch the balls bounce up and down. 
• Have all the adults stand and hold the parachute while the children go underneath the “tent”
• Lift the parachute as high as you can then let go and watch it flutter to the ground. 

5. Face-painting

You don’t need to hire a professional to do toddler face-painting. You can either choose a few basic designs to offer or just do hearts/stars etc on cheeks for fun. 

6. Decorate a mural

This is probably best for an outdoor party but would work indoors too. Tape a very large piece of paper to the wall (if you can find a great poster that goes with the party theme, even better), leave out crayons or washable markers and invite the guests to color in a portion of the picture.  

It can then be given to the birthday host as a nice memory from their party and hung in their bedroom or playroom. 

7. Scavenger Hunt 

Create a simple treasure hunt for your toddlers around the party theme. Cut out pictures and stick them around the house. Then print off “clues” that show what the children must look for. 

For example, a hunt around “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” might have the pictures of the different foods the caterpillar ate around the house. 

8. Circle Time 

You don’t need to be a teacher to know how much children love circle time. Gather them all round on the mat and sing some easy songs such as Old MacDonald’s Farm and other nursery rhymes. You can finish off with a story. 

9. Obstacle Course

Create a simple course using pillows, buckets and bean bags along with other household items. This can be especially fun outdoors. 

10. Tin Band

Get your earplugs out for this one! Hand out pots, pans and kitchen utensils such as wooden spoons and whisks and let the children create their own pop band!

Shakers

Toddlers love shakers! You can turn it into a parent and tot craft by supplying dried corn/beans/rice and plastic containers. You also need duct tape to make sure they stay closed. 

I like to use plastic Easter eggs for this craft as they are the perfect shaker size for little hands. Just put some dried corn into each egg and tape them shut. 

Turn on the music and let the children “shake their sillies out!”

12. “Cake” Walk 

This is the one of the only birthday party activities that requires prep work. A traditional cake walk involves places squares with different numbers on the ground. Participants walk around the squares then choose one when the music stops.  

Someone then picks out a number from a hat and whoever is standing on that square wins. 

Given that most toddlers don’t know all their numbers, an alternative version of this is to print out pictures of animals or colours. 

13. Simon Says 

Everyone loves a game of Simon Says and it is so easy to play. Do whatever “Simon” (an adult) says (touch your nose, clap, stomp etc) but if they don’t start with “Simon Says…” and you do the action, you are out!

Simon says jump up and down

Wave your arms (Out!). 

14. Dance Party 

Keep it simple and throw a dance party with your little ones. Put on Baby Shark and go wild. Glow sticks would make it even more fun if you turn down the lights! 

15. What’s the time Mr Wolf 

Any child that can count will enjoy playing this classic game. An adult can be the wolf for the first round and then older children can take turns if the little ones struggle. 

How to play

1. The wolf has with his back to the crowd who all stand in a line at some distance away.
2. The crowd asks “What’s the time Mr Wolf?” and the wolf responds with a number. The crowd takes the corresponding number of steps towards him. 
3. Continue until the crowd get really close to the wolf and instead of a number, he responds with “dinner time!” and chases them all. Whoever he catches becomes “the wolf”. 

16. Bean Bag Toss

This is a fun game that can you can make as easy or as complicated as you like.  The easiest way to play is to put 3 different colored buckets on the floor and get the children to try and put the correct coloured bean bag in the bucket. 

You can buy bean bag sets on Amazon and they are pretty cost-effective if you don’t want to make your own.

17. Cookie decorating 

This can get a little messy so be prepared with wipes and a plastic table cloth beforehand! All you need is some plain sugar cookies, frosting in individual bowls and toppings such as sprinkles and candies. 

18. Sprinklers

If the weather is warm, one of the best birthday party activities for 2 year olds is getting wet in the backyard. We have this sprinkler by Melissa and Doug and it is the perfect size for little ones to run in and out of in the backyard. 

I prefer sprinklers to a wading pool for toddler parties because I don’t like the responsibility of such little kids in the water.  

19. Sensory Bin

This is another toddler party activity that can get messy so it is fun to do outdoors or in the kitchen. You can search Pinterest for tons of different sensory bin ideas. I normally use our outdoor water table for mine.

My oldest son always gets a bigger birthday party with my whole family since my dad and mom’s birthday are right after his birthday.

Because of that, the day of his birthday is just our immediate family And since Rishi (aka Dad) has to go to work, it’s kinda like a normal day for us!

And let’s be real, is there anything worse than a birthday that doesn’t feel like a birthday?! Especially when you’re TWO? 🙂

Roy is still talking about my birthday which was months ago because we didn’t have birthday hats, sing Happy Birthday, or open presents! It traumatized him. 😉 I had to make sure we did at least a few fun things so he had a good time on his big day!

3 Tips for a 2nd Birthday

Birthdays and birthday parties can be stressful, here’s some ways to keep your child’s birthday fun!

1. Keep it Simple

Don’t stress over the perfect cake, the best balloon garland or a perfectly clean home! Keep it simple, that includes guests! Having a lot of people can be overwhelming for everyone so on the best ways to keep it simple is to keep the guest list small!

You can even move the party from your living room to an indoor play area (Chuck E. Cheese makes an excellent venue) or even a small pool or splash pad for a summer birthday! Then you don’t have to worry about cleaning your house or boundless energy from toddlers ruining your home! Just always have good adult supervision no matter where you’ll be.

Keep party games simple or if you don’t even want to mess with even a simple party game, you could do without any! We opt for no games just to keep our life a little easier.

2. Remember Your Kid’s Schedule

It’s always a good idea to keep your child’s schedule (including morning or afternoon naps) in mind when planning the party. If their nap time is from 10-12, don’t plan on cake and presents at 11!

One great idea is to have guests arrive while our kids are napping. Then you can eat and chat and once the birthday kid is up they’ll be well rested for the festivities!

3. Keep it Toddler-Friendly

Toddler birthday parties should be geared towards toddlers (and younger kids too). That means toddler friendly food (don’t only have adult food and pre-cut it so you don’t have to spend your time cutting up their meal), 2 year old appropriate games and space for them to run around (especially after the sugar kicks in).

1. Fill their crib with balloons.

It can be hard to know what to do for a 2 year old’s birthday so on great way to start the day is to keep it simple and easy like starting with balloons!

Filling your freshly turned two year old with balloons is a fun way to start the day! Blow up 5, 10 or even 20 balloons and fill your little’s ones crib when they wake up!

When my oldest turned one, I blew up a bunch of balloons and filled his crib with them when he woke up. Something so easy and inexpensive turned into (literally) hours of entertainment for him! It was one of the best ideas I ever had.

For his second birthday I did the same thing and again, he loved it. Actually, I’m pretty sure he loved it even more since he could run around the crib and throw and kick the balloons everywhere!  

We like to blow up balloons randomly throughout the year so I like to get some with confetti inside as a special treat since he loves those! They’ll spend a ton of time playing with the confetti balloons, almost like their trying to figure out how it got inside!

If you plan on doing this, do yourself a favor and buy one of these electric balloon blowers! They’re so inexpensive and when you think about how many birthdays you’re going to celebrate, most of which will include balloons, you’ll be so thankful you had one!

I made about 3 balloon garlands before I got an electric balloon blower and I was kicking myself I didn’t get it early – it makes it go so fast!

One tip is to blow up all the balloons and put them in a laundry basket (or 2) the night before. Then you’re not rushing to get them blown up if your two year old happens to wake up early on their birthday!

You can also do a whole balloon garland!

2. Go out for donuts!

We all can agree two year olds love their sweets! You can’t go wrong with donuts and some quality time together to start off their big day. Head out on their special day and visit your favorite local bakery (or even the grocery store if there’s no bakery close to you) and let your 2 year old pick out their own donut for a special treat!

We rarely go out for donuts during the week. My husband will take our oldest out for donuts after his gymnastics class on the weekend but we never do that during the week.

On our child’s birthday I have to let my Type A personality chill out and let them pick whatever donut they want…even if it’s full of chocolate or gigantic or topped with a million crazy things!

On Roy’s 2nd birthday I needed to put the rules aside and let him eat just the icing and not much else. After all, it’s his birthday and that only comes around once a yer!

3. Visit the fire station.

Is there anything more fun than a giant red truck with lights for a toddler?

We live just a few blocks from the local fire station. I’ve never been there but figured it couldn’t hurt to stop in and ask to see the fire truck since Roy is obsessed with “big trucks” lately.

They were SO nice. They showed him the truck, turned on the lights, pulled out their helmet for him to try on (he was NOT a fan of that haha) and even gave him a sticker and coloring book!

If you don’t live walking distance to one, just give them a call and see if you can stop by! Even a quick 15 minute visit can be really special for a 2 year old. In fact, almost a year later, Roy still talks about it!

4. Go to the {nice} park.

Make an effort and go to the nice park. You know the one. The one with multiple play areas, a splash pad or something that your 2 year old really loves.

Let’s face it. If you’re anything like me, you go to the most convenient park. We have one a block from our house so we go to that one frequently but don’t always head the extra 5 blocks to the bigger park with tons more to do.

We went to the bigger park (where they actually have swings, things to dig with a smaller, toddler appropriate slides) and Roy was in heaven!

5. Have a dance party!

Turn on T Swift, Bruno Mars, Laurie Berkner or whoever your kiddo is loving these days and dance it out!

Roy’s a big fan of music and dancing (I would venture to guess most young children like it too). Nothing beats a good dance party to end the birthday celebrations!
