British bookmakers named “Three Billboards…” as the top BAFTA favorite

British bookmakers believe that Martin McDonagh’s “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri) has the best chance of winning the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) in the category “Best Film”. This is evidenced by the betting odds on the websites of the two largest UK bookmakers Ladbrokes and William Hill.

The probability that the picture with the American Frances McDormand in the title role will be awarded the prestigious award at the gala ceremony scheduled for February 18 is estimated as 8:11. If you bet one pound on this film, the total winnings will be only 1.72 pounds, since the chances of winning are 57%. Coming in second place is Mexican director Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water, with a ratio of 2:1. This means that the winnings will already be three pounds for every pound wagered (33% chance of winning in the category).

Christopher Nolan’s war-historical drama Dunkirk has a 5:1 chance of winning the Bronze Mask (probability of 16%). Outsiders in this category are Joe Wright’s Darkest Hour and Luca Guadagnino’s Call Me By Your Name. Their chances of winning are 7.6% and 5.8% respectively.

McDormand – Chasing the First Mask

“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”, nominated in a total of nine categories, will most likely win the Bronze Mask for Best Actress. British bookmakers are confident in the victory of McDormand, who played the role of a mother trying to get an investigation into the rape and murder of her daughter in the American outback. They are 4:11 or 73% chance. The Bronze Mask would be the first in McDormand’s rich collection of film awards, including an Oscar for her performance in Fargo.97 years.

McDormand’s rival, actress Saoirse Ronan, who was nominated for her lead role in Lady Bird, has a slim chance of winning at 7:2 or 22%.

Even fewer people are sure that British actress Sally Hawkins, who plays the role of the mute girl Elisa Esposito in the science fiction thriller The Shape of Water, will go to the award. The coefficient for her victory is 5:1 (16%). And if you bet on the outsiders of the nomination, Annette Bening (Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool, “Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool”) and Margot Robbie (“Tonya Against All”, I, Tonya), then you can win twenty times more – their chances of winning are so low.

In the Best Actor category, the undisputed favorite is Gary Oldman, who played Winston Churchill in the drama Darkest Hour. The odds for his victory are 1:12 for Ladbrokes and even higher, 1:16, for William Hill. This means 92% and 94% chance of winning. For Oldman, the BAFTA award would be the third in his career, but for the first time in this category. In 1998, Nil by mouth won Oldman two awards for Best British Film and Original Screenplay.

Competitors 59-year-old Oldman, judging by the number of bets made on them, it will not be easy to become victors of the ceremony, which will be held at the Albert Hall. So, the chances of Daniel Day-Lewis (“Phantom Thread”) and Timothée Chalamet (“Call Me By Your Name”) are estimated at 10:1 (9%), and Daniela Kaluuya (“Get Out”) and Jamie Bella (“Movie Stars Don’t Die”) in Liverpool”) – even lower. The fiercest fight should unfold in the category “Best Director’s work”. The chances of del Toro and Nolan are estimated as absolutely equal and amount to 8:11 (57%). Martin McDonagh, who follows them, has a slightly less than 8% chance of winning the Bronze Mask in this category.

The British Academy traditionally announces the names of the BAFTA winners between the ceremonies of awarding the two main film awards in the United States: the Golden Globe (held on January 7 in Los Angeles) and the Oscar (held in Hollywood on March 4).
