ELC

The First Baptist Church Early Learning Center is a ministry of our church. For almost 60 years, our early education program has served families in Martinsville and Henry County with affordable and loving childcare and education for children ages 6 weeks to 5 years, along with before- and after-school care and summer care.

Our primary mission is to offer parents an affordable, safe, and secure Christian environment to learn and grow. We currently have over 70 children enrolled in our program.

Mission Statement

In conjunction with the mission of First Baptist Church, the Early Learning Center faculty and staff offer children and parents an affordable, safe, and secure environment in a Christian setting, with age-appropriate curriculum.

We are a member of the Virginia Quality program, which provides training and support for participating childcare centers. Our program has spacious, newly- renovated rooms, a caring church to support the ministry, a spectacular children’s library and computer lab, and age-appropriate curriculum through Smart Beginnings. Our teachers are well-trained and provide caring instruction. Our children also attend science workshops at the next-door Virginia Museum of Natural History, and once a week, the librarian from the Blue Ridge Regional Library enhances literacy through interactive reading experiences.

Our Program

The FBC Early Learning Center is open to any child, regardless of sex, race, religion, or national origin. The Center offers care and education for various age groups, including year-round education, before- and after-school care, and summer care. See below for more information on the program’s available classes.

How Preschool Can Help Your Child

Preschool provides a supportive environment through which your child can…

• adjust to his or her first separation from home
• develop a positive attitude toward school
• develop a positive self-concept
• learn in the style best suited to his or her age – experimentation, exploration, etc.
• learn to function as a member of a group as well as an individual
• learn those concepts which must precede formal instruction in kindergarten

Our Early Learning Center includes spiritual education and technological and literary education as well.



For all children age 2.5 years to 5 years, our Pastor holds chapel each Monday morning to learn about Scripture and God’s love. Once monthly, the Pastor visits the afterschool program to offer a Bible story lesson.

Enrollment

If you would like to enroll your child in our program, you may pre-register online below or pick up an application at the church. Please submit/return the application and a $50 application fee to:

Applications are accepted year-round for year-round care. Once your application is received, someone will be in contact with you. Please note that spaces do fill up quickly.

When the Center is full, new applicants are placed on a waiting list until a space becomes available. Parents will be notified as spaces open up.

Applications are taken on a first come, first served basis.

For Summer care, applications are received in the Spring.

For current tuition rates and all fees, please see the Parent Handbook.

When a space becomes available and your child is accepted for enrollment, you will need to pay a $150 holding fee by check made payable to FBC ELC.

There is an enrollment packet of papers that need to be filled out and returned, including health forms, which will be provided to you by the FBC ELC Office.

Monthly Tuition is paid by the 5th of each month. Weekly tuition is paid Monday of each week.

You will be notified in advance of any needed raise in tuition.

Our staff consists of 6 Lead Teachers and 14 Assistant Teachers. Our Lead Teachers are well-trained in Early Childhood Education, all with 12 or more hours of training, and at least half with Early Childhood Education Certificates or higher. All Assistant Teachers are trained by seasoned Center staff members.

Description:
The Teacher 1 will provide education and care for each child enrolled in the program in compliance with local and state agencies such as the Florida Department of Children and Families, Department of Health and the United States Department of Agriculture Child Care Food Program.

Qualifications:
Degrees: High School,Cert,GED,Trn,Exper Licenses & Certifications: Pediatric First Aid/CPR Early Childhood Education 45-hour Certification Child Development Associate FL Child Care Prof Credentia Additional Qualifications: Completion of FCCPC (Florida Child Care Professional Credential) or National CDA (Child Development Associate) obtained within one year of hire date and maintained current. Current Pediatric First Aid and CPR certification or completed within six months of hire date. Basic computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, etc.). Minimum Required Experience: 1

The Edgewater Early Learning Center, located in the North Shore Baptist Church, was acquired from the YWCA in 2006 and has been serving families in Chicago’s Edgewater/ Andersonville neighborhood with the highest quality early education and care for more than 30 years.

Our center is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and provides individualized care for children; including children with special needs; in an environment designed to foster growth and development.

Individualized Learning
The teachers at the center use the Creative Curriculum to design a learning environment that includes designated areas for activities. These activities include: building blocks, art, library sessions, sand and water areas, music and movement, cooking, and computers. Through active involvement with the environment, children learn to understand the world around them, make independent decisions, and partake in activities that help develop school-readiness skills.

Edgewater’s after-school curriculum follows the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) philosophy of enhancing learning by helping children engage in problem-solving, discovery and exploratory learning through hands-on activities. Qualified teachers are available to assist children with their homework during designated work sessions. Full days of care are available on school holidays as well.

Healthy Lifestyles
Edgewater Early Learning Center also incorporates the Healthy Lifestyles curriculum, emphasizing healthy eating habits, exercise, and environmental protection. To reinforce the values promoted by our Healthy Lifestyles curriculum, the center offers a menu of nutritious, catered meals and snacks. Children participate in daily outdoor activities, including nature walks and excursions to local parks. A gym is available onsite for indoor physical activities, exercise, and group games.

Parent & Family Engagement
Families are a vital part of Edgewater Early Learning Center and we encourage parent involvement in the classroom and during center activities. Our open-door policy welcomes parents to share their time and talents with us. The center offers home visits and two parent-teacher conferences where families can help set goals for their child. Monthly parent committee meetings, workshops on topics such as managing stress or picky eaters and family-friendly activities are also are part of our program. Community Partners
Edgewater Early Learning Center partners with the Ounce of Prevention Fund to provide Head Start services for 3 to 5-year-olds. The Head Start model provides a nurturing environment that supports the healthy growth and development of each child in the context of the child’s family, culture and community. The center also partners with Chicago Public Schools to provide State Preschool for All and Prevention Initiative Programs that provide a seamless transition for children from preschool into the public school system.

We Accept Child Care Subsidies!
Through the CCAP program, we work with families to provide premier child care services at a reduced rate depending on income and additional criteria. Community Partners

Edgewater Early Learning Center partners with the Dept of Family Support Services/Chicago Early Learning to provide Preschool for All Programs.  Certified Teachers provide educational experiences that build kindergarten readiness for 3 – 5 year olds.
