School

As the school district grew over the past ten, three new new schools were built .

Norris Elementary School

The original Norris School, built in 1882, is now in the Kern County Museum on land donated by Robert Norris, a local farmer. For 32 years, students from eighth to first grade (at that time, children actually moved from the upper grades to the lower grades) studied the three “Rs” here. They also received moral and religious teachings through methods that relied heavily on mechanical mechanics and recitation. The teacher of the one-room school was expected to teach all eight grades, as well as act as guardian, nurse, and discipline officer, for relatively little pay. The Norris teachers were lucky that one of the district trustees provided wood for the stove. At 19In 1915, the school was rebuilt, and it became much larger. Again in the 1950s it was reconstructed and again for the last time in 1980. In 2005, the school was relocated to a new high school site to provide more room for more students. (In 2005, at least 3 students entered the high school every week.) The current principal is Erin Hudson. The school’s mascot is the Squire.

Norris High School

Norris High School was founded at 1959 on the grounds of an elementary school. In 1983, a new addition to the campus separated the middle school from the elementary school. Both schools continued to grow, and in 2005 Norris Elementary said goodbye to its historic campus and moved to Old Farm Road, leaving the entire high school campus (with the exception of one wing, which still houses district offices). Director Walter Kreider recently received the Outstanding Music Award and the choir, directed by Amanda Isaac, received the Excellent Music Award. As of the 2015-2016 academic year, Norris Middle’s Principal is Ryan Carr. This school is the only high school in the district and its mascot is the Knight.

Olive Drive Elementary

Olive Drive Elementary was built in 1988 and opened in 1989. Due to growth in the district, nine additional classrooms were added in 2003. A new library was built in 2014, named the “Richard P. Pierucci Library” after the former superintendent. served in the area for 36 years. This school teaches from Kindergarten to Grade 6 and is currently headed by Lisa Limpias. School mascot – Trail Blazer.

William B. Beemath Elementary

William B. Beemath – An elementary school in the Norris School District offering grades K-6. This school was opened in the 2001-2002 school year and its current director is Michelle Bryant. School mascot – Bulldog.

Veterans Elementary School

Veterans Elementary School is the newest school in the area. It opened on August 20, 2007. The current principal of the school is Russellin Sullivan. The school colors are red, white and blue. The school is very patriotic, supportive of veterans and does a lot to help the community and support their veterans. The school now has a promise to always support its troops and never take them for granted. School mascot – Eagle. 9 Norris School District – About Us. Retrieved 2019-04-12.

    History

    Early years

The town’s history began when Joseph Baker of Westboro, Massachusetts, the namesake of the village, bought 10,000 acres of land in 1791. The original settlers were his son-in-law Stephen Maynard and his nephew Jonas Brigham along with their families. In 1794, Baker built mills and gristmills at Baker Pond. Maynard built a tavern two years later. In 1797, a school was opened in a log cabin at 108 Post Road and Vermont. In 1804, Joseph Baker set aside five acres of land for the development of the city and the cemetery. Maynard built a Federal style house north of the village that served as the first post office in 1811. [4]

In 1839, Bakersfield had 12 geographically accessible school districts due to the growth of the area. In 1840 the city grew to 1258 inhabitants. [4]

    Academies

The village is called the “old academy town” because of the schools for college students. For boys, public speaking was encouraged. The Bakersfield Academic Association was founded in 1839 and built a three-story building to house the Methodist Church and South Academy. [4] This was the first building of Bakersfield Academy, which opened in 1840. [5] Jacob Spaulding was hired as director, and Mary, his wife, was an art instructor and mentor. In 1851, the school had 271 students from New England, other parts of the United States, and Quebec. They had a staff of 14 people. The academy fell into disrepute when Spaulding left the school in 1852 to become headmaster of Barre and its well endowed academy. [4]

In 1844 the Methodists wanted to establish an academy on the northern outskirts of the city. Informally referred to as Northern Academy, the headmaster was the Rev. H. J. Moore of upstate New York. [4] The academies closed after losing students due to westward expansion, the establishment of central public high schools, and the American Civil War. [4] In 1870 there were 70 students at Bakersfield Academy. [6] Bakersfield Academy no longer exists. [5]

academy land and donated $100,000. Jacob Spaulding, Rev. Dr. Wright of Bakersfield and Oberlin College, and President Buckham of the University of Vermont worked there. At 19In 00, the extension included additional classrooms, laboratories and a gym. Notable people who have attended the academy include: Warren Austin, the first U. S. Ambassador to the United Nations, U.S. Senator, and members of the Austin family of Highgate. In 1967 it closed as a high school. It continued to offer primary and secondary education until 1987.
