CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR Page 7. Caitlin frowned, trying to comprehend everything – Mega Tutorial

Caitlin frowned, trying to comprehend everything.

“Are you saying that I can go forward to the future?” she asked.

Aiden shook his head. nine0005

“Only if you have a shield.”

“If I have one?”

The elder looked at her, but did not answer.

“When the shield is in your hands, you will understand everything yourself.”

Caitlin tried to understand his words, but they were too cryptic. She wanted to ask a few more questions, but she felt that Aiden had already told her everything he wanted to.

“I don’t know where to go next,” she said pleadingly, “to find my father.”

“You don’t know because you can’t see,” he replied. “Now tell me, what else do you see?”

Caitlin closed her eyes again. This time, she saw an amazing temple stretching for hundreds of meters in all directions. This temple was located in the center of Jerusalem. She saw a square within another square and a building in the center. She knew that this was the most sacred place on earth, and there she should have gone on. She saw herself entering the courtyard, holding an ivory staff. nine0005

“I see a big temple,” Caitlin said without opening her eyes, trying to make out the details. – I see how I enter it with a staff in my hands. Ivory wand. I hear a voice. He says: square inside square.

Slowly, Caitlin opened her eyes to see Aiden holding out the wand to her. She could not believe her eyes: it was such a rod that was in her visions. Caitlin recognized the weapon immediately, though she hadn’t seen it for hundreds of years: it was an elaborately decorated wand, more than a meter long, with a round, painted knob. She saw him once in the dungeons of the Cloisters, in New York. It was Caleb’s wand, one of the most powerful weapons of his clan. In Aiden’s hands, the wand gleamed magically. nine0005

With a trembling hand, she grasped the weapon tightly, feeling its energy coursing through her body.

“We have treasured these weapons for thousands of years, leaving them for the great war,” Aiden said. “At the same time, this is the last clue, the last relic on the way to meeting your father.”

Caitlin examined the wand carefully.

“Should I take him to the temple? she asked. “The one I saw, the one in Jerusalem?”

Aiden nodded. nine0005

“You have to go. There is little time left. War is coming. Find a father for the welfare of us all. Go. Say goodbye to Caleb. Try to tell him everything you always wanted to say. You may never see him again.”

His words made Caitlin go cold with horror and her eyes fill with tears.

“How can you say such things?” she asked fearfully.

Aiden looked back at her seriously.

“I don’t say anything that you yourself don’t know. Sometimes we know our own future, and we must accept it. I’m sorry, but your happiness with Caleb has come to an end.” nine0005

CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Scarlet stood in the cell and looked at the group of people who had come. Ruth stood by. There were ten people in front of her. She could tell for certain that they were all just like her – vampires. At the same time, dark energy emanated from them. Scarlet sensed their bad intentions.

The guard opened the silver bars. The vampires continued to stand a few meters from Scarlet, carefully studying her. The guard entered the cell and took off her silver handcuffs. Scarlet rubbed her wrists, glad to be free. She really wanted to try to escape by slipping between the vampires and head for the stone stairs, but Scaret knew that she would not succeed. At least Ruth wouldn’t be able to run away with her. So she continued to look warily at the vampires, wanting to know who they were and what they wanted from her. nine0005

Looking around at the guests, Scarlet realized that she knew one of them well. She looked carefully. Wasn’t she wrong?

The girl could not believe her eyes. His face looked familiar, but his expression was completely foreign. It seemed that he was under the influence of some kind of spell, and his eyes looked older, vicious and lifeless. Whatever it was, Scarlet was sure that she had not been mistaken.

Sam. Her uncle. Polly’s husband. They met in Scotland, and Scarlet managed to fall in love with him. Once he looked after her and protected her. What was he doing here now, surrounded by these nasty types? nine0005

Looking at Sam, Scarlet recognized some of her mother’s traits in him. These thoughts made her heart beat faster, and her desire to see her mother intensified. Looking at Sam, she knew she should feel relieved that at least one of her family had been in this place and found her. Such thoughts would be logical in her position.

At the same time, from an emotional point of view, looking at Sam, Scarlet did not feel any relief at all. Moreover, in his presence, she felt fear. She could not explain her own feelings, but looking at Sam, it seemed to her that he did not recognize her at all, and he did not care about her. It seemed that he had come to the prison not at all to save her, but to help others find her. Scarlet didn’t understand. nine0005

“Sam?” she called, looking at him.

Everyone also looked at the guy. For a moment, for a fraction of a second, it seemed to her that something similar to surprise was reflected on his face, and perhaps even insight.

“Sam, don’t you recognize me? Scarlet asked. – It’s me. Scarlet. Your sister’s daughter.”

Sam looked at her for a few seconds without blinking. It looked like he was trying to understand something, to remember something.

In the end, his gaze did not change – he continued to look at her coldly and indifferently. nine0005

“I don’t know you,” Sam barked in a low voice.

His words were cold. Scarlet didn’t recognize the voice. It was not a human voice, but the voice of a heartless, cruel being from hell. It wasn’t just his words but the tone of his voice that told Scarlet that he was no longer the Sam she knew.

She was very upset, immediately realizing that he was not sent here by her mother at all, and that he would not help her, and that she was still alone in her trouble.

Standing next to Sam was a woman with long red hair and large breasts, dressed in a tight leather suit. She glared at Scarlet. The girl saw the anger in her eyes and felt that she had a very big influence on Sam – as if she had put a spell on him. Scarlet wondered who this woman was.

On Sam’s other hand stood a very old man with very angry eyes. From the way he carried himself in the center of the group, Scarlet deduced that he was their leader. His pale blue eyes measured her as if looking through Scarlet, sending chills down her spine. She felt that he had only come to the prison to see her. nine0005

Ruth began to growl.

Scarlet was haunted by the question: what were they doing here? It was obvious that they had not come to free her. Whatever the cause of their appearance, she felt that they did not intend to harm her. At least for now. Scarlet knew they wanted something from her.

The ugly old vampire smiled, and his face was covered with a million wrinkles. It was the scariest smile Scarlet had ever seen. This old man reeked of evil. More than ever, the girl missed her mother, wanting to see at least some familiar face. nine0005

“And you are a gifted girl,” the old man began, “just like your mother. Do you know that once I tried to kill her? Many centuries ago, or better to say, many hundreds of years in the future. In New York City. I poured a barrel of acid on her head, but it had no effect on her, because at that time she was a half-blood.

The man stepped forward and squinted at Scarlet.

“But you’re not a half-breed, are you? No. You are a complete vampire. The result of the union of two vampires. A special and unusual girl. You know that vampires are incapable of procreation, and you are the exception to the rule. One in a million. The only one in the entire universe.” nine0005

The old man fell silent as he studied Scarlet.

“What makes you so special?”

He fell silent again, and Scarlet thought about it. Is what he says true? Had he really tried to kill her mother? Will he try to kill her too? What for?

“Yes, I would love to kill your mother right now if I could,” the vampire replied with a smile, reading her thoughts, “but the problem is, I don’t know where she is. I don’t know yet. You will lead us to her, and then I will kill you both.” nine0005

His smile widened. The anger that permeated those words made Scarlet feel uneasy. He was the most evil man in the world, and judging by his tone, he spoke quite seriously.

“I will never tell you where my mother is,” Scarlet replied defiantly.

The old man laughed.

“Only because you don’t know yourself,” he replied. “However, you will lead us to her. You see, in the world of vampires there is a very powerful weapon. It’s called the vampire shield. There is only one person in the world who knows where to find him. And that person is you, my dear.” nine0005

Scarlet narrowed her eyes at the old man, beginning to lose patience.

“I don’t know anything about any shield,” she replied. And it was true.

“I believe you. You were never told about him. You were entrusted with his protection.”

The vampire took a step forward.

“You see, the secret of where the shield is kept is passed down through the female line. They couldn’t trust all the knowledge to your mother alone, so they divided the clues between the two of you, half to her…and the other half to you.” nine0005

Suddenly, the old man lowered his eyes and looked at the bracelet on the girl’s wrist.

“They didn’t tell you anything. Why do they need it? They didn’t know if they could trust you. Of course not. Instead, they just gave you this clue. Your bracelet is the final riddle.”

Scarlet dropped her eyes to her wrist and looked at the bracelet that one of the vampires in Scotland had given her. She completely forgot about him. The second she lowered her eyes, Scarlet realized that the vile old man was telling the truth. She suddenly felt energy emanating from the bracelet. The force was so powerful that it burned her hand. Scarlet knew the vampire was right, and that the bracelet was some sort of clue. She was angry with herself for not having thought of this earlier and for never considering the bracelet from that point of view. Now she knew that he was the key to finding the shield, and more importantly, to finding her mother. nine0005

At the same moment, Scarlet realized one more thing – there was no way the bracelet could have fallen into the hands of that nasty old man.

She abruptly lowered her hand, ripped the bracelet from her wrist and put it in her mouth, ready to swallow it so that no one else would ever get it.

To her surprise, the old vampire’s reaction speed was much better than her own. With lightning speed, he approached the girl, and as she brought the bracelet to her mouth, he reached out and snatched the jewelry right from her fingers. His hand was cold as ice as he grabbed her wrist. He held her with the strength that only a strong 18-year-old boy can do. Scarlet was a strong vampire, although she did not represent the full power of her strength, but the old man was even stronger. nine0005

He squeezed her wrist, causing Scarlet to scream in pain and unwittingly unclench her fingers. She released the bracelet from her hands, and the vampire caught it in mid-air, opening his palm at just the right moment.

Ruth rushed to her aid, trying to bite the old man through the muzzle.

The vampire turned around and hit the wolf with such force that it flew across the cell and hit the stone wall with a screech.

This was the last straw. Scarlet pounced on the old man, and by some miracle she was able to move so quickly that she could wrap her arms around his neck. She squeezed and squeezed the wrinkled skin, watching with delight how his eyes widened in surprise. She strangled the old man. He was strong, stronger than anyone she’d ever met, but, Scarlet realized, much to her surprise, she was also very strong. nine0005

Moments later, people surrounded her, pushing and kicking from all sides. They attacked her from above, knocking her to the ground.

Scarlet felt the silver handcuffs close around her wrists again as the guards pinned her face to the stone floor. They grabbed her and pulled her to her feet by force.

Standing in front of the crowd with her face smeared with mud, she grinned angrily at the old man, who looked at her with no less hatred. It was evident that her behavior shook him to the core. nine0005

“You cheeky brat,” he snapped, holding the bracelet and teasing Scarlet with it in the torchlight.

“You just gave me the keys to the kingdom, to everything I was looking for in life. Now I will find the shield, and you will come with us to see for yourself how I will raise the most vicious army that mankind has ever seen. And then,” he added, smiling broadly, “I will gladly kill you and your mother.”

*

Scarlet was pushed from behind to walk, and after a strong push she stumbled over several meters. Ruth, who was walking beside her, growled viciously, trying to defend her mistress and bite the guard, but being still muzzled, there was little she could do. nine0005

Scarlet’s rage reached its breaking point as a group of vampires led her through the alleys of Jerusalem. Wherever they went, crowds of passers-by parted, letting them go ahead and trying to get out of their way as quickly as possible. Everyone felt the evil emanating from these people in black, quickly moving towards their goal.

Scarlet desperately wanted to run away, fight, break free, but she couldn’t. The silver shackles tightly gripped her wrists, making her feel helpless. Her life was in the hands of those vile villains. nine0005

Sam, his girlfriend, and the clan leader led the way, turning through the streets, marching along the stone pavements, leading Scarlet to who knows where. She was grateful that they had rescued her from a dark prison, but she did not feel safe in their environment. She knew that once they found what they were looking for, they would immediately get rid of her – or worse, use her to lure her mother into a trap and kill them both.

Scarlet was fearful again, but there was little she could do to save herself. For the thousandth time, she reproached herself for letting them have the bracelet. She should have guessed earlier, understood that the bracelet was the key and could lead her to her mother. If only she knew this, she would have been more careful with him and would have safely hidden him from prying eyes, for example, she would have removed him from her hand and hidden in her pocket. nine0005

But no one told her about its special purpose. Before she was sent back in time, an old man put this bracelet on her arm in a mountain castle in Scotland right before he gave her some liquid to drink. He didn’t say anything, he didn’t explain anything. She forgot to think about this jewelry and even more so had no idea that the bracelet was something special.

Now she felt terrible. Scarlet seemed to have a certain responsibility. It was her fault that she was now leading this group of vampires to where they would find what they were looking for – that unfortunate shield they kept talking about. Passing quickly through the streets of Jerusalem, resembling a small army in their appearance, the vampires looked very determined. Scarlet had an unpleasant sensation that told her that they were leading her into a lair of evil, and she, unwittingly, gave them a hint with her own hand. nine0005

Finally, they left the alley and found themselves in a wide, stone square. A group of vampires made their way through the crowd of people, scattering everyone who came across on the way to the sides. No one dared to resist them. It seemed that a swarm of wasps broke into the city.

They crossed the square and passed under an ancient stone archway. Entering another alley, they went down the stone steps and found themselves in a narrow street. Even the rats tried to get out of their way, and the old women who lived in the windows upstairs slammed the shutters in fear. nine0005

The street ran into a stone wall. Looking closer, Scarlet noticed that a secret door was hidden in the wall, above which the inscription: “Hezekiah’s Aqueduct” was displayed in ancient script.

The old vampire nodded, and Sam slammed the door open with his foot. The stone crumbled, revealing a vaulted tunnel leading down. The steps went into darkness.

Scarlet was again pushed from behind so that she nearly fell off the stairs. Everyone began to descend the new stairs. Everything around was getting darker and darker, there was almost no light. Narrow beams of sunlight filtered through the tiny windows above, and Scarlet could hear the distant murmur of water. It seemed that springs passed nearby, and the sound of water echoed in the darkness. They appear to be entering some sort of underground tunnel. nine0005

The stairs are finally over. Scarlet entered a narrow passage with high ceilings. The passage was so narrow that two people could barely pass through it. The girl couldn’t help feeling claustrophobic as the group continued their journey through the tunnel. From time to time there were small holes in the walls through which water penetrated into the passage.

Scarlet didn’t know where they were going. It was the scariest place she had ever been to. She wondered if they were going to kill her and leave her right there. nine0005

The group entered a new passage and then stopped.

Raising her eyes, Scarlet saw a glittering golden door in front of her.

The vampires parted to let the old man go forward, who climbed a few steps and came to the door. Stopping, he smiled, took out Scarlet’s bracelet, selected a small key hanging from it, and inserted it into the keyhole.

A loud click sounded. The key fit perfectly.

The vampire turned it, and the ground shook under Scarlet’s feet. The old man took a step back and the door opened. nine0005

Scarlet’s breath caught as sparkling golden rays came out of the room, filling the entire tunnel. The light was so bright that the vampires had to turn away and close their eyes. Only the old man continued to look ahead, not looking away from his pale blue eyes. He took a step and with both hands grabbed something that lay outside the door.

Turning around, he raised this object high above his head, looking at his retinue.

Everyone bowed reverently.

In the hands of the old man was a shield – a large, golden shield, sparkling and shining with light. The shield pulsed and vibrated, changing colors and seeming to come to life. nine0005

With a triumphant look, the old man lifted it above his head, and at that very moment, the wrinkles on his face began to smooth out. Scarlet couldn’t believe her eyes. Right before her eyes, he became younger and younger, and in a couple of moments he turned into an 18-year-old boy.

Throwing his head back and baring his teeth angrily, he shouted:

“Comrades! After three millennia, I present to you the Vampire Shield!”

CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Caitlin stood next to Caleb at the foot of the Mount of Olives. Her heart was torn to pieces. She had just completed the learning process and knew it was time to say goodbye to Caleb.

They had to part, there was no other choice. Aiden made it clear that her help was needed elsewhere, that she had to find her father, and that Caleb had to stay here to protect his clan with Aiden. The last thing Caitlyn wanted in her life was to break up with Caleb. She wanted him to go with her, especially now that it was the last leg of the journey to find her father and their daughter. Caitlin hated her fate. Why couldn’t they stay together and live their lives in peace? Why did life always separate them? nine0005

Looking into Caleb’s eyes, Caitlin knew that he wanted the same thing. They were loyal and devoted warriors. Both knew too well where their help was most needed, and would never let down those who believed in them. Both knew that if Caleb left with Caitlin now, he would leave the clan unprotected. After the massacre in Scotland, neither Caitlin nor Caleb wanted to leave Aiden and his people without help again.

Whatever it was, Caitlin’s heart was breaking at the thought of their parting, especially now with so much at stake, now after Aiden’s dire prediction. Caitlin hated him for saying that, for saying that he and Caleb had different fates. As much as Caitlin wished those words were out of her head, she knew they were true. nine0005

She refused to believe it. Caitlin promised herself that she would quickly complete the mission, find her father, Scarlet, the shield and immediately return to help Caleb, help them all.

Caitlin couldn’t get rid of an unpleasant premonition. Looking into Caleb’s big, brown eyes shining in the morning light, she couldn’t help thinking that she would never see them again. Caitlin knew that Caleb knew it too. These thoughts only increased the feeling of fear.

Caitlin tried to find the right words, but nothing came out. After a few moments, unwittingly, Caitlin burst into tears and threw herself on Caleb’s neck. nine0005

He hugged her back tightly, and she felt her back muscles tense. Caitlin did not unclench her arms for a long time, sobbing and not wanting to let him go. Caitlin avoided the moment of goodbye as best she could.

Caleb pulled away. There were tears in his eyes, too, and he tightened his jaw, and Caitlin could see that he was holding on with all his might, trying to be strong for both of them.

“Everything will be fine,” he said.

Caitlin knew that Caleb himself had little faith in this.

“You are needed there,” he added, “and I am needed here. Find the father, find our daughter, and bring them home.” nine0005

He removed a strand of hair from her face.

“Don’t worry,” Caleb added. – I’ll be ok. We’ve fought so many battles together for centuries, and I’ve always been fine, haven’t I?”

Caitlin looked up at him and nodded. It was right: nothing ever happened to Caleb. However, it seemed to Caitlin that this time it was different. She had a premonition of something, but what exactly she herself did not understand – some kind of turmoil in the universe, a storm on the horizon. nine0005

“It’s just too bad we can’t be together,” Caitlin said. “I wish Scarlet was here with us. I would give anything if only we were all together somewhere in a calm and safe place, away from this fuss, from all this.

“I know,” Caleb answered softly.

Caitlin was torn. On the one hand, more than anything in the world, she wanted to stay with her husband right now. At the same time, she understood that she had to fulfill her duty for the sake of their common safety. It was a choice Caitlin hated. She was angry at the universe for constantly forcing her to make choices and never letting her life run its course. nine0005

Caleb smiled tenderly and brushed the unruly strand from her face.

“Remember the day we spent together? he asked with a touch of nostalgia in his voice. – A day at the beach? Horseback riding?”

Caitlin smiled at the memory. Of course, she remembered that day well and often thought about it.

“Yes,” she replied.

“We were together no matter what city or century we were in. It is important. Our memories matter. The time we spent together. No matter what happens, we will always be together.” nine0005

Caitlin wanted to answer: Yes, you’re right. We will always be together.

She couldn’t say those words – her emotions took over. She burst into tears again and hugged Caleb tightly. It was the worst moment of her life, because deep down she knew that she would never be able to hug him again. She felt it in every cell of her body.

Caitlin didn’t know how to act, what to say, or how to let go of Caleb, so without saying another word or even looking at him, she abruptly pulled away. nine0005

Turning around, Caitlin took two steps, jumped off the mountain, and flew into the air. Her wings opened, and she began to rise higher and higher into the sky.

Caitlin felt that Caleb was looking at her and watching her fly away.

She did not dare to turn around.

CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Scarlet couldn’t believe her eyes as she watched the old man raise the vampire shield over his head. The ground beneath her shook. She saw the vampire change right before her eyes, becoming younger and stronger. Beams of light continued to emanate from the shield, completely filling the tunnel as all the vampires knelt, shielding their eyes from the bright light. Even Scarlet had to turn away, it was so light around. Ruth whined. nine0005

Scarlet got a glimpse of what was going on around her, and she was completely bewildered by what she saw: shadows and shapes flew out of the shield. At first it seemed to her that it was an optical illusion, but, looking closer, she realized that her eyes did not deceive her. It looked like souls were flying out of the shield, taking on different shapes in the light. At first they looked indistinct, like shadows, but then they began to take on a more solid form, turning into figures that turned into people in a few seconds. nine0005

Vampires.

Scarlet was amazed when among these vampires she recognized the faces of those whom she had once seen in other ages. One of them had a face she would never forget: a large, bald head, one eye, and a large scar across the bridge of her nose. Kyle. She thought he was dead forever and was scared to death when she saw him emerge from the light.

In a few seconds he was standing nearby, alive. He looked as ferocious as before, seething with even more anger than in life. He was furious as if he had just been released from a cage. nine0005

Other figures formed around him. There was another vampire she recognized: Scarlet had seen him in Scotland, everyone called him Rhind. He killed Polly.

Dozens and dozens of other vicious vampires appeared all around, each more terrifying than the last. It seemed that the shield was a portal, releasing an army of demons outside.

Soon the narrow tunnel of the aqueduct was completely filled with screaming and screeching creatures. Chaos reigned all around. Scarlet began to fear for her own life. She understood that now that she had led them to the right place, they no longer needed her, and she would be killed. The girl understood that she needed to act quickly or she had a few minutes to live. It was her only chance for salvation. nine0005

Looking around the tunnel, she desperately looked for a place to hide. She realized that the chaos created was acting as a red herring. She was still handcuffed, but at least her guards hadn’t paid any attention to her… yet.

This was her chance. She turned around and gave Ruth a little nudge to get up off the ground. Ruth, who continued to sit faithfully at her feet, understood the hostess with a half gesture.

Scarlet nodded, and at the same time they both turned and ran up the stairs, moving away from the crowd and trying to get out into the street. They went up flight after flight. Running with handcuffed hands was uncomfortable. Turning around, she saw that no one was following them. Everyone was still staring at the shield in fascination. nine0005

Scarlet heard the first screams when she reached the top flight of stairs and saw a door in front of her. She turned around and saw the vampires pointing at her. Suddenly they took off and ran after her.

Scarlet and Ruth accelerated and ran out of the aqueduct. Scarlet was glad to be out in the fresh air, out of the dungeon. She ran as fast as she could, hoping the vampires couldn’t catch up with her. She knew that she had a small head start, but she continued to run, turning in narrow streets and hoping that they would not end in a dead end. Ruth ran alongside, almost keeping up. nine0005

Turning the corner, Scarlet was stunned.

Dead end.

She heard footsteps behind her and knew that the vampires chasing her were already close. She also knew that she had only minutes to live. She no longer worried about herself, but only missed her mother very much. Scarlet would have given everything just to see her again, at least once, to warn and explain everything, to ask for forgiveness.

Seeing the figure descending from the sky, she knew that her last hour had come. Scarlet gathered her strength, hoping that she would still be able to survive. nine0005

CHAPTER NINETEEN

Caitlin flew as fast as her wings would allow, heading towards Jerusalem. She tried to convince herself that she could still find her father, Scarlet, the shield, and return to the aid of Aiden, Caleb, and everyone else. Wiping away tears, she tried not to think about the bad, suggesting to herself the thought that everything would be fine. Caitlin flew very fast, intending to fight fate and make sure that everything ends well.

She flew so fast that she hardly paid attention to what was happening below: to the hills of Israel, beautiful in the rays of the morning sun, to the change of valleys and cities. Moreover, Caitlin was able to wake up from her own thoughts only when Jerusalem was already stretching below. She looked down, amazed at the sight.

The city below was the most amazing place Caitlin had ever seen. For many lives in different centuries, she had seen many amazing cities, but none of them could compare with Jerusalem.
