Salaries of employees became known

The salary of a manager, cashier or an ordinary employee of a financial institution directly depends on the level of the minimum wage in Ukraine

Photo: UNIAN

More than 570 vacancies have been opened in Ukrainian banks, the salary of which ranges from 8 to 45 thousand UAH. Banker.ua journalists analyzed what salaries are offered to employees in the banking market and what positions.

Looking for both ordinary employees and middle and senior managers. Ukrainian banks are ready to offer the following salaries:

  • cashier in a bank branch: UAH 12-15 thousand;
  • bank branch administrator: UAH 8-11 thousand;
  • economist: UAH 8-9 thousand;
  • contact center operator: UAH 17-25 thousand;
  • collector: 12-14 thousand UAH;
  • banking products sales manager: 15-45 thousand UAH.

Bank managers, programmers and application developers earn the most in banks. Such employees are ready to pay up to 160 thousand UAH. For example, a similar vacancy was posted by Raiffeisen Bank Aval, which is looking for a Senior DevOps/SRE Engineer.

A bank branch manager earns about UAH 33,000. Such employees also have their own bonus system.

How about in Europe? Ukraine has long been striving for a European standard of living, but in terms of wages it remains far behind other countries.

For example, here are the salaries of some employees of European banks:

  • assistant bank manager – 4,780 euros;
  • bank analyst – 2,180 euros;
  • bank employee – 1,230 euros;
  • bank manager – 8 thousand euros;
  • regional bank manager – 7,980 euros.

In general, the salaries of bank employees in the EU countries range from 1,100 euros to 9,000 euros, depending on the country and position of the employee.

Recall that in April Ukrainian banks bought $470 million more cash from the population than they sold. This monthly figure is the highest since 2015.

As Bohdan Danylyshyn, head of the National Bank Council, wrote on Facebook, such an increase in supply in the foreign exchange market from bank clients contributes to the strengthening of the hryvnia exchange rate, which has been observed for the third week in a row and has already reached a 1.5-month high.

How much do Kazakh banks pay to its employees

Kursiv counted exactly 20 banks in Kazakhstan, whose personnel costs, according to audited reports, in 2019 exceeded 1 billion tenge. The total spending of these twenty on their employees increased from 248 billion tenge in 2018 to 278 billion in 2019-m, or 12%. For comparison: inflation in Kazakhstan at the end of last year amounted to 5.4%.

Bank CenterCredit (+38% yoy) increased the item under consideration the most (see infographic). In three structures (Alfa, Altyn and ATF), the growth was over 20%. In Halyk, which is the largest employer in the banking market, staff costs rose by only 1%. And finally, three organizations (Jýsan, Capital and AsiaCredit) cut their personnel budgets.

Common denominator

The ranking of banks in terms of the amount they spend on employees in general looks quite predictable and does not differ much from the ranking by headcount. Much more informative is such an indicator as the average cost per employee per month. Of course, it cannot be considered an average monthly salary, since not only salaries and bonuses are included in the personnel costs of banks. This, for example, may include one-time financial assistance for marriage, the birth of a child, retirement, and other items of the social package.

“Personnel expenses include such payments as expenses for business trips, training and retraining of personnel, medical insurance for personnel, social and other payments that are not income for employees,” the press service of Housing Construction Savings Bank said.

Nevertheless, the bank’s expenses per unit of personnel, even taking into account the inevitable errors in the calculations, give a fairly close idea of the level of remuneration in this bank and even closer when comparing remuneration in different STBs (since the calculation error will be approximately the same for all organizations) . Kursiv calculated this indicator (the ratio of personnel costs to the actual number of employees) for 18 banks and Kaspi.kz, Citibank refused to disclose the number of personnel.

From two hundred and above

According to our calculations, the highest paid employees in 2019 were Altyn employees with an average remuneration of 846 thousand tenge per month (hereinafter – including taxes, social and other payments classified as personnel costs). For this bank, an error associated with the number of employees is possible.

There are no exact figures in open sources, the bank refused to disclose them, so Kursiv had to use the data indicated on Altyn’s website. A source close to the bank confirmed that about 500 people now work there.

The second place was taken by Capital Bank – 744 thousand tenge. There is certainly a margin of error here due to the denominator, since the staff of this troubled bank has almost halved in the past year (from 370 to 218), while the average headcount is unknown. The 150 people who left the bank did not leave the bank at once and received a salary for most or less of 2019, however, in the calculations, all this salary “got” to the 218 remaining employees. For this bank, the indicators of 2018 look adequate (not in terms of compliance with its business capabilities, but in terms of compliance with reality), when the average remuneration here amounted to 474 thousand tenge. However, the Capital Bank anomaly is the only one in our calculations, and this institution itself can hardly be attributed to the players whose indicators reflect objective market trends.

In four banks (Sberbank, RBK, Zhilstroy and Alfa) unit personnel costs exceeded 500 thousand tenge. Four more structures (Forte, Kassa Nova, Jýsan and Tengri) overcame the bar of 400 thousand. Five players (AsiaCredit, BCC, VTB, ATF and Halyk) spent more than 300 thousand tenge per month on employees. And the four banks with the lowest salaries were Home Credit, Nurbank, Kaspi and Eurasian. As you can see, the list of not the most generous employers in the sector includes three organizations that, on the one hand, are highly profitable, but, on the other hand, have a large staff. But managers in three small banks did not skimp on salaries, in which serious problems with liquidity were discovered in the second half of last year and at the beginning of this year.

It is clear that the average is tricky, but it allows you to compare banks with each other. It can be made more relevant if the share of key managers (usually members of the board of directors and the management board) is excluded from the total personnel costs. For example, in Altyn, the share of top management in personnel costs is 20%. Without taking it into account, the size of the average remuneration is reduced immediately by 170 thousand, to 675 thousand tenge. At Kassa Nova, senior executives account for 22% of total remuneration, without them the average is reduced by 90 thousand, up to 346 thousand tenge. In Bank RBK, the share of tops is 13%, without it the average remuneration is adjusted down by 70 thousand tenge, to 485 thousand. Also, the influence of this factor is noticeable in Forte (53 thousand tenge), Sberbank (45 thousand), Alfa and Jýsan ( 30 thousand), Eurasian (28 thousand) and Home Credit (23 thousand).

Up and down

If we talk about the dynamics of the average remuneration, then the highest growth (not counting the anomalous indicator of Capital Bank) was shown by Altyn (+162 thousand tenge compared to the previous year), Alfa (+148 thousand) and BCC (+76 thousand). Alfa-Bank did not respond to Kursiv’s request.

BCC told us that in 2019 the bank attracted a number of key players in the main business areas and began work on changing the wage system so that effective employees earn on average here more than in other banks. The new wage system is based on two main principles: internal justice and external competitiveness.

“Our goal is to create all conditions for attracting and retaining effective employees and gradually ousting those who do not achieve the expected results,” the BCC press service said.

In six banks, specific personnel costs decreased compared to 2018, including the most significant decrease in Zhilstroy (by 96 thousand tenge), Halyk (by 66 thousand) and troubled AsiaCredit (by 52 thousand). Halyk did not respond to Kursiv’s request.

Housing Construction Savings Bank confirmed the fact of wage cuts, but on a much smaller scale than it follows from Kursiv’s calculations. According to the bank, in 2019, the average monthly remuneration (excluding payments such as expenses for business trips, training and retraining of personnel, social benefits, etc. ) decreased by 12 thousand tenge, from 550 thousand to 538 thousand. due to changes in the staffing structure, the press service explained. The bank is increasing its front office staff and reducing its management staff.

“The salary level of employees has changed since the introduction of the grading system in the bank in 2018. This allows you to select the best personnel due to competitive wages and prevents the payroll and number from inflating while increasing the productivity of employees,” the press service noted.

In the current year, according to Zhilstroy, the amount of salaries in the bank has not changed significantly. Salary indexation was not carried out, and the incentive system based on the personal effectiveness of employees has not changed, the press service concluded.

Profit sharing

The leadership of Altyn Bank in terms of unit personnel costs becomes clearer if we consider such an indicator as the bank’s profit per employee. In this nomination, Altyn was also the best in the sector last year. Each of its employees earned an average of 28.7 million tenge for the bank, of which the bank spent 10 million on the same employee.

Halyk, Zhilstroy and Kaspi.kz are next on this efficiency list with around 20 million tenge of profit per head unit, followed by Sberbank (17 million). But these banks share their profits with the team in different ways: Sberbank and Zhilstroy are in the top five in terms of unit personnel costs, the other two players are in the bottom.

In 2019, no one could have foreseen the coming pandemic and the economic disruption it would cause. In the current situation, it is hardly appropriate to operate with such concepts as banks with high or relatively low salaries. The value of the workplace has increased on its own, the task of the moment is to preserve the places that exist and not worsen the conditions for them. It would seem easier for banks with lower salaries to do this, but the obvious difficulty is that they have a lot of jobs, and it has become much more difficult to earn money (including to maintain these jobs) due to increased client risk.
