Thanks to the creative ancient Greeks for “Alexandra”.
They combined the words “alekso” – “protect” and “andros” – “man” in the sense of “man” and not “spouse” – and got the meaning “protecting people” or simply “protector”. The name gained wild popularity thanks to Christianity. Today in Europe, “Alexander” is one of the twenty most popular male names. And in Russia and the USA – even in the top ten. It is curious that in the West, our diminutive “Sasha” liked it so much that it completely separated from its full counterpart. Sacha Baron Cohen (British comedian) is not a pseudonym, but a completely full name.
The fate of the name Alexander
The name is recommended for those who want to see their child as a general director or commander. Sasha is a born organizer and achiever. Let us recall Alexander the Great: at the head of forty thousand troops, he defeated the army of the Persian king Darius III, which was many times larger. Macedonian conquered Persia, plundered the city of Persepolis and for some reason burned the royal palace – he probably got carried away.
In Russia, the name Alexander, as you know, was borne by princes and emperors. In the 19th century, as many as three Alexanders ruled with us. Young Alexander, heir to the Macedonian king, grows up in an atmosphere of hatred between his father Philip and his mother Olympias, and at the same time is torn from love for both parents. It brings up a brave warrior and a prudent ruler. From childhood, Alexander demonstrates amazing prowess – for example, he rides a furious horse that more experienced riders cannot handle.
When he becomes an adult young man, Philip has a new, very young wife. She quickly becomes pregnant. Olympias warns her son that now the royal power can go into the wrong hands. Alexander is afraid of the collapse of his ambitious plans, but soon Philip dies from a treacherous stab, directed by unknown conspirators.
As soon as he ascended the throne, Alexander began campaigns of conquest. His army defeats the powerful Persian king Darius, whom Alexander believes is the true murderer of his father. Alexander’s bold dream comes true – the gates of Babylon, the city of wealth and pleasures, open before him. The proclaimed “king of kings” seeks to equalize the conquered peoples with the victors. His true goal is to erase borders, to create a single state under his command. This gives rise to discontent and the first conspiracy among Alexander’s inner circle. The king calmly cracks down on traitors.
Despite the fact that Alexander’s heart is given to Hephaestion, childhood friend and faithful commander, he understands how important it is to have an heir.
Closing his eyes to the indignation of noble countrymen, Alexander marries Roxana, the daughter of not the most prominent Bactrian nobleman, similar to Olympias in her obstinate character. Together with his wife and exhausted army, he goes to inhospitable India. Reproaches in his direction are becoming more frank. It comes to the point that in a drunken quarrel, Alexander personally stabs his old friend Cleitus.
Seriously wounded in battle, Alexander announces his return home. After another feast, his beloved Hephaestion suddenly falls ill, and soon dies in the hands of the king. Distraught with grief, Alexander accuses his jealous wife Roxana of poisoning and practically strangles her until she declares her pregnancy. Alexander, keeping his word, briefly survives Hephaestion: he catches an incurable disease. Together with Alexander, his great power goes into oblivion, but by no means his illustrious name.

15 years have passed since this film was released, and I still root for its “failure” in America.
On whose orders the director, actors and the film itself were nominated for the Golden Raspberry? How unfair. I watched the film 4 times, and each time I couldn’t stop… For those who think that the film is not historically accurate enough, I want to say that this is a work of art. And for those who are confused by the orientation of the great commander, I advise you to look into history.

I have never seen a more beautiful film, I will say without a drop of flattery. The acting, the scenery, the plot – everything is perfect. The film can be watched many times and still not get bored.

For me, as a historian, just a balm for the soul. The crown of creation, I would say. Any shortcomings are erased from the acting, the battle scenes and, of course, the entertainment in general. I slightly disagree with the presentation of Alexander’s motives, but there has long been no one to judge this.
