University of North Carolina at Greensboro Libraries, USA – HiSoUR Cultural History

The University of North Carolina at Greensboro University Library System has two branches on campus located in Greensboro, North Carolina. These include the Walter Clinton Jackson Library and the Harold Shifman Music Library. Affiliated campus libraries include the Teaching Resource Center and the SELF Design Studio at the School of Education, the Interior Architecture Library at the Gatewood Studio Arts Building, and the Multicultural Resource Center located at the Elliot University Center.

Walter Clinton Jackson The Library contains approximately 2,000,000 physical items in its collections and also provides access to millions of digital items. Jackson has over 300 publicly accessible computers and has a million visitors each year. The Harold Schiffman Music Library specializes in music materials and services, and is located in the Music building.

When the State Normal and Industrial School (now UNCG) first opened its doors in October 1892, it had no library or library books. However, founder and president Charles Duncan McIver spoke adamantly about “The Library We Have,” and he personally donated many of his books to start the school’s first reference collection. Other faculty members followed suit, donating or lending books from their personal libraries in order to create a collection for student use. the school’s collection of books continued to grow, and in 189In 6, Annie Florence Petty was hired as NORMAL’s first State Librarian. On October 2, 1905, the library of the State Normal and Industrial College (now the University of North Carolina at Greensboro) moved from a small room in the main building (now the Faust Building) to the newly built Carnegie Library (now the Forney Building). Given the ever-growing need for more library space, college president Charles D. McIver contacted Andrew Carnegie, a well-known philanthropist and strong supporter of libraries, and asked for the funds needed to construct the building. Notably, he agreed to finance the entire project, which amounted to $18,868 at its completion.

Unfortunately, the tragedy of the library on September 15, 1932, when it mysteriously caught fire. Final damage to the building and its contents, including books, is estimated to be around $98,000 (or $1,600,000 today). Thereafter, Mr. Charles H. Stone, librarian of the college, began the difficult task of restoring the library’s damaged collection. Books and materials that could be salvaged and preserved were taken to the Student Building while stacked materials were left on site but were not available to students.

The Carnegie Library was restored and remains the main library on campus until June 1950, when over 134,000 books were moved to new, larger library buildings across the street, later named after former chancellor Walter Clinton Jackson. At the same time, the older part of the library still stands and houses a large part of the library administration and special collections and university archives. In 1964, the library became the federal records repository; it still retains the status of an elective depositary for US government documents, as well as a full depositary of government documents. The nine-storey addition tower was built in the main building in 1970s, making it an iconic on campus.

University library collections totaling over 2 million printed books and federal and state documents. The library houses over one million printed volumes and provides access to over 60,000 journals, over 400,000 e-books, and over 360 electronic databases. Digital Projects The team has created numerous digital collections, totaling over 300,000 digital files, from the holdings of university libraries and other institutions in the area.

Library The UNCG catalog currently holds stocks for materials at the Walter Clinton Jackson Library, the Harold Shifman Music Library, the Multicultural Resource Center, and the Learning Resource Center. holdings of special collections, rare books and university archives are increasingly available through an online catalog.

Reference Collection is located in the ROI Department on the ground floor of the library’s main wing. The collection consists of general and specialized encyclopedias, dictionaries, reference books and biographical sources. The Link Collection also includes government reference sources, indexes and abstracts, telephone directories, and a map collection containing over 12,000 items. Points do not circulate. Topic guide KING Department of Internet Access and Print Resources on various topics.

Government Documents Web pages contain extensive links to local, state and national government information. The Collection of Government Documents is part of the ROI Department. Service is located at the main information desk on the 1st floor. The collection includes both federal and North Carolina documents. The Library Catalog contains a record of the library’s collection of federal documents published after 1976 and North Carolina state documents published after 1987 years old.

Harold Schiffman Music Library is located on the main level of the School of Music, Theater and Dance building (corner of W Market and McIver Streets) and supports the University’s educational, research and service purposes by providing the musical resources, information, and services needed by students, faculty, staff and community members. The collection consists of sound recordings, video recordings, scores, books and TV series about music. Faculty, staff and students are invited to come to the Harold Shifman Music Library to listen and view audio and video materials and check books and abacus.

Marfo Blakeney Hodges Special Collections and University Archives (SCUA) is located on the second floor of the library’s main wing. SCUA houses rare books, campus photographs, a performing arts collection, artefacts and textiles relating to student life, and archival and manuscript materials that document the history of the university.

Among the main book collections in special collections are the collection of a large and significant woman, with titles from the fifteenth through the twentieth century; American Women’s Detective Fiction Collection; Girls’ books in the Collection series; American Trading Binding Collection; Collection Juvenile; and a collection of art books containing a large selection of artists’ books, private press productions, beautifully illustrated books, and books on bookbinding, typography, and papermaking. Among the principal authors represented with significant holdings are George Herbert, Emily Dickinson, Lois Lensky, Randall Jarrell, Lawrence, Rupert Brooke and Charles Dickens. SCUA also has a collection of 39 manuscripts5 separate collections. The specific strengths of this collection are creative writing, including works by Randall Jarrell and mystery writer Margaret Maron; visual and performing arts, including works by composer Peter Paul Fuchs; women’s studies, including letters marked by suffragettes; records of the business and politics of North Carolina’s Piedmont region leaders, including Congressman Howard Coble and philanthropist Joseph M. Bryan.

University Archives materials date from the founding of the university in 1891 and includes records of presidents and chancellors, boards of trustees, faculty and student committees, societies and organizations, student publications, and many of the university’s academic divisions and administrative offices. In addition to paper records, this collection includes extensive holdings of photographs, clippings, oral histories, postcards, artefacts, and textiles.

SCUA is also the steward of two world-famous collections: Hakimzadeh Carter Women’s historical project Betty Veterans and the largest holding of cello music related materials.

NC DOC is the result of a collaborative effort to make academic output from the University of North Carolina system more accessible to the world. Current institutional members include Appalachian State University, East Carolina University, North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, UNC Charlotte, UNC Greensboro, UNC Pembroke, UNC Wilmington and West Carolina University. NC DOKI includes many full text articles, audio recordings, dissertations and other formats. All materials are indexed by Google and freely available to scientists and researchers around the world.

Digital Projects Office, part of Electronic Resources and Information Technology (ERIT) The Department is responsible for coordinating the digital storage and access of projects both within the library and for external custodians of unique historical material, including UNCG educators and local cultural heritage organizations. Priorities The Digital Projects team has identified four collection of priority areas for new digital projects based on strong collections and priorities within the university and university libraries: 1) the history of the university; 2) local and regional history; 3) women’s history; 4) performing arts.

Most of the reserve material is now available online through Blackboard, but the Libraries do still maintain a small collection of print stock located at the desk’s exit on the first floor.

Digital Media Commons supports the 21st century learning and curriculum goals of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and university libraries by providing the space, technology, resources, services, and experiences to support the digital creation of multimedia projects. Its goals are to provide interactive consulting services to UNCG students, faculty and staff, to create multimedia projects for their educational and professional needs; to enable the development of the faculty in the creation of multimedia assignments for the development of student information and digital literacy; and provide screen space and technology, edit films and other media, presentation practices and collaboration.

The Martha Blakeney Hodges Manuscripts section of Special Collections and University Archives concentrates on acquiring, preserving, and making available collections that document the history, cultural life, economy, and politics of North Carolina Piedmont. The collections include materials that relate to the arts, education, local history and politics, literature, music, civil and human rights, nursing, physical education and dance, politics, theatre, university history, and women’s studies.

The Betty H. Carter History Project Women Veterans documents women’s experiences in the US military through letters, articles, photographs, published material, uniforms, artefacts, and oral histories. It contains over 550 collections which include over 350 oral histories. Housed and maintained in the University Archives at the Jackson Library, a collection of research materials for scholars of military history, and women’s studies.

Cello Music Collections The Marfo Blakeney Hodges Special Collections and Archives University is dedicated to acquiring, preserving and making available cello music collections for research and teaching. The cello music collections at UNCG constitute the largest holding of cello music-related materials in the world. Among the cellists represented are Elisabeth Fairing, Maurice Eisenberg, Bernard Greenhouse, Fritz Magg, Rudolf Matz, Luigi Silva, Janos Scholz and Laszlo Varga. The collections also include scores and other editions that complement the material in other Cello music collections.

The mission of the North Carolina Literary Map, run by the University’s Department of Special Collections and Archives, is to highlight the state’s literary heritage by connecting authors’ lives and works to real (and imaginary) geographic locations. Through the development of searchable and swipeable data-driven online maps, users can access databases, learning tools, and cultural resources to deepen their understanding of specific authors as well as the cultural space that forms these literary works.

Libraries provide a variety of quiet and group study spaces at both the Jackson Library and the Harold Shifman Music Library. Students, faculty, and staff can reserve group spaces, many of which are equipped with technology, through the library’s home page reservation system. More than 200 computers provide students with access to information resources, as well as a wide range of software. In addition to circulating books like the Jackson and Schiffman Library, check out movies, CDs and technology including laptops, iPads, camcorders, voice recorders and calculators. The Check Out Desk at Jackson Library is maintained by the Access Services and Delivery Department (ASD), operating every time the building is open, including 24/5 service during the school year. ASD also offers reserves, an on-campus supply of faculty materials and an interlibrary loan for all UNCG users. Research, Outreach and Instruction (ROI) The Department and the Schiffman Music Library provide research assistance to UNCG students, faculty and staff and community members in-house, as well as through online chat, email and phone. An extensive information literacy program reaches students from the first year through graduate work. Librarians provide classroom learning through the UNCG curriculum and develop a wide range of online learning programs.
