Note on Frequency of Inspections

Centers, Group Homes, and Licensed Family Homes::

In 2014, legislation was passed that changed the number of unannounced visits from two per year to one per year in Child Care Centers, Group Child Care Homes, and Licensed Family Child Care Homes. As a result of this new law, you may see a decrease in the number of deficiencies listed on this website for these types of providers. Unannounced visits are still made in response to a complaint, and visits are scheduled with the facility during the re-licensing process, which occurs every two years.

Registered Family Homes:

Most family homes are registered, not licensed. In 2014, legislation was passed that allows Child Care Licensing to make one unannounced visit to these homes each year. As a result of this new law, you may see an increase in the number of deficiencies listed on this website for Registered Family Child Care Homes. Unannounced visits are still made in response to a complaint. Click here for an overview of each facility and the requirements they must meet according to state law.

Architectural Ensemble of the Imperial Academy of Arts

The architectural ensemble of the Imperial Academy of Arts took shape over a century and a half and is associated with the names of its outstanding students and professors.

The project of the main academic building, which is the core of the ensemble, was developed by the first academic professor in the architecture class, J.-B. Wallin-Delamot (1729-1800). Its construction at the first stage was carried out by the famous rector of the Academy of Arts A.F. Kokorinov (1726-1772), and continued by Kokorinov’s successor Yu.M. Velten (1730-1801). The architect of academic buildings at the end of the 18th century was the great Russian architect A.D. Zakharov (1761-1811), who soon became famous for the creation of the majestic architectural center of St. Petersburg – the Admiralty building. An outstanding student of Zakharov, A.A., took part in the development of the academic ensemble. Mikhailov II (1773-1849).

K.A. Ton (1794-1881) is one of the largest architects of the middle of the 19th century, and his student A.I. Rezanov (1817-1887), who worked for Ton on the construction of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow. Tone also deserves credit for the worthy completion of the academic ensemble from the side of the Neva River.

Pupil, student, and later professor of the Academy of Arts A.P. Bryullov (1798-1877) planned and landscaped the territory of the academic garden and completed the ensemble as a whole. Bryullov’s student D.I. took part in the creation of new interiors. Grimm (1823-1898), and other architects.

Perhaps the only unsuccessful link in this outstanding ensemble was the building of the mosaic workshop of the Academy of Arts, built on the side of the 3rd Line of Vasilyevsky Island in 1862-1864 according to the project of academic professor F.I. Eppinger (1816-1873).

In the architectural ensemble of the Imperial Academy of Arts one can find samples of various architectural styles – from early classicism to eclecticism and neoclassicism. However, despite the apparent diversity of architectural styles, the ensemble as a whole retains classical austerity and serves as a model of architectural and urban planning skills.

The question of building an academic building arose simultaneously with the founding of the Academy of Arts, which was originally supposed to be created at Moscow University.

The project of the building of the Academy of Arts for Moscow was commissioned by the famous French architect, architectural theorist and founder of his own architectural school, Jacques-Francois Blondel. He completed the drawing in 1758, but since it was decided to move the Academy of Arts from Moscow to St. Petersburg, Blondel’s project remained unrealized. Probably at the same time he was offered the position of an academic professor, but, having a strong position in France and not wanting to part with Paris, he recommended his cousin Jean-Baptiste Vallin-Delamote instead. The latter developed a project for a new building, approved at the beginning of 1764.

Naturally, the idea of having its own building for the Academy of Arts originated much earlier. Initially, for educational purposes, they purchased several residential buildings built in the time of Peter the Great and located along the embankment of the Neva River between the 3rd and 4th lines of Vasilyevsky Island. Subsequently, they acquired neighboring plots of land up to Bolshoy Prospekt. So the place of construction of the building of the Academy of Arts was predetermined in advance.

At the initial stage of work on the project, Vallin-Delamote started from the design of his cousin, but then resolutely abandoned it both in terms of the general composition and in the development of detailed drawings. The materials of the French collections that have become available prove irrefutably that Vallin-Delamote was the author of the preliminary project, the detailed study of individual parts of the building and the interior decoration, and not Kokorinov, who until recently was considered the main author of the main academic building.

Based on the traditions of the most advanced French architecture of that time, Wallin-Delamote, in the conditions of St. Petersburg reality, developed an original project of an unprecedented building of an educational art institution, which became the most outstanding piece of architecture of early Russian classicism and a model for future generations of architects.

In 1764, following the approval of the project, for the successful conduct of work, an “expedition of the structure” was established, headed by Kokorinov, and the following year, the production of a large architectural model began according to the drawings of Wallen-Delamot.

The magnificent model with decoration of the grand interiors has been well preserved to this day and is one of the most remarkable exhibits of the Department of Architecture of the Research Museum of the Russian Academy of Arts. The detachable architectural model gives a clear idea of the intention of Vallin-Delamote.

A huge building for those times, he entered into a rectangle close to a square with sides of 140 and 125 meters, in the center of which he planned a vast round courtyard with a diameter of 55 meters. To visualize its size, it is enough to say that the famous Roman Pantheon, the largest domed structure of antiquity, with a rotunda diameter of 43 meters, could fit in a round courtyard.

In addition to the central round courtyard, in the corners of the building, Wallin-Delamote designed four more light courtyards with rounded corners on one side. On the sides of all five courtyards, he grouped the main educational and residential premises of the old Academy, united among themselves along all three floors by straight corridors. The ceremonial halls, lined up in an enfilade along the main facade, are designed with windows overlooking the Neva.

The rationally symmetrical, classically clear layout of the building corresponds to the solution of its facades. According to the design model, Vallin-Delamot initially wanted to decorate the long main façade with a colonnade inspired by his memories of the Louvre colonnade. But later, a simpler and cheaper version was adopted for execution with flat pilasters and three ledges-risalites with four-column porticos – a central one and two side ones. Similar, but more restrained, is the composition of the rear, later garden façade. And even more modest planar solution have side facades.

The main façade is more ornate in terms of plasticity. In its central part, the features of baroque architecture, characteristic of early classicism, are still preserved. On both sides of the main portico, the façade curves along the first floor in an arc, and sinks down in the same way along the second and third. Complicated baroque outlines are also characteristic of the domed completion, which corresponds to the round front hall located above the round vestibule of the lower floor.

Rich architectural and artistic decoration was supposed in the two-height main halls, designed for the height of the second and third floors of the main building, as well as in the church. Unfortunately, the decoration of the ceremonial interiors according to the designs of Vallin-Delamote was never carried out. At present, only the lower vestibule, which once had a through passage to the inner round courtyard, has retained its original appearance.

The construction of the building of the Academy of Arts, which began successfully in the early 1770s, is suspended due to the termination of appropriations. Unfortunately, Kokorinov, unfairly accused of overspending on construction, died in 1772, and according to an unofficial version, he committed suicide, and Wallen-Delamot had to take on the duties of the architect of the academic building.

After the death of Kokorinov and until the departure of Vallin-Delamote to France in 1775, construction continued to a small extent and ongoing repairs were carried out, and the following year it was resumed under the leadership of Yu.M. Felten, who inherited the title of professor after the death of Kokorinov. In fact, the construction was carried out under the supervision of his student and assistant E.T. Sokolov. The main work was completed in 1788.

B.EIFMANN DANCE ACADEMY | PALACES, GARDENS, PARKS /12+/

The Dance Academy was created by the Government of St. Petersburg on the initiative of Boris Eifman. The grand opening took place on September 2, 2013.

Academy – a choreographic school that combines general and secondary vocational education – accepts children from the age of 7.

The uniqueness of the training lies in the integration of the traditions of teaching classical ballet art and the concept of modern world choreography. Special 9 Complex0213

disciplines makes it possible to prepare universal ballet dancers of the 21st century, who are most in demand in the troupes of leading Russian and foreign theaters.

In total, the Academy has more than 350 pupils from different regions of Russia. Most of them during their studies live in a comfortable boarding school on a full board basis.

Pupils of different ages perform on the stages of the Mariinsky, Mikhailovsky, Alexandrinsky and Bolshoi theatres. Thanks to the high professionalism and rich artistic practice of the Academy’s teachers, students grow up on samples of classical and modern heritage: the school’s repertoire includes fragments from the performances of Boris Eifman, Marius Petipa, George Balanchine, Roland Petit, Maurice Béjart and others.

The Academy annually hosts sections of cultural and educational forums, master classes for students and teachers from leading teachers and choreographers from around the world.

Boris Eifman Children’s Dance Theater

Children’s Dance Theater was conceived by the choreographer as a center for aesthetic and professional education of students of the Boris Eifman Dance Academy and thousands of young Petersburgers. On this stage, it is planned to show ballet performances and concert programs for young spectators. Festivals and competitions will also be held here with the participation of children’s creative teams from Russia and foreign countries, both professional and amateur.

The new theater received a hall with 500 seats and modern technical equipment. During the construction of the stage platform, which has been ongoing since 2016 and carried out by PSB ZhilStroy LLC, the existing building of the secondary school was reconstructed. Since September 2019, pupils of the nearby Boris Eifman Dance Academy have been mastering general education disciplines in the new academic building. A theater complex was attached to the reconstructed school. It consists of a stage and an auditorium, a rehearsal room, dressing rooms, workshops, technical and household premises.

The total area of the five-story theater is 9105 sq. m. Its central multi-level space during the daytime serves as a recreation for school students, and in the evening as a hall-foyer for spectators. It should be emphasized that the parallel functioning of a general education institution and a full-fledged theater in the same building is a practice that has no analogues in the world. The project of the building was developed by the architectural bureau “Studio 44”. The theater is connected to the Academy, designed to train the creative elite of the 21st century, by an underground passage. In the future, near the new stage, on the street. Bolshoy Pushkarskoy, 9, there will be a boarding school for pupils of the Eifman choreographic school.
