Moonsang College History

Preparatory Period (1916-1925)

In 1916, due to a lack of schools for children in Kowloon City, Dr. Ts’o Seen Wang offered to raise funds to build a school. In 1920, Mr. Au Chak Mun (also known as Au Tak), one of the two people who reclaimed the land in Kowloon Bay and established the Kai Tak Investment Company, died and bequeathed a donation of HK$10,000 to support Dr. Ts’o Sina. Wang’s plan. Later, Mr. Mok Kon Sang donated HK$10,000 as a fund to establish the school. The Rev. Arthur Dudley Stewart, Principal of St. Paul’s College, was given the preparatory work. At 19In 24, Mr. Rufus Huang, a teacher at St. Stephen’s College, Stanley, was appointed as the first director of the school and rented a three-story building at 2 Kai Tak Bun as a school building and an open area near the school building as a playground. To commemorate the contributions of Mr. Au Chak Man and Mr. Mok Kon Sang, the school was named Moonsang College after them.

Initial period (1926-1938)

On March 8, 1926, classes were opened. At that time there were only 4 teachers and 18 students. Only the junior middle section for boys has been created. Junior 1, 2 and 3 had one class each. In addition, there were three preparatory classes: Pre A, B, and C for children under the junior level. That winter, a board of directors was formed and Dr. Ts’o Seen Wang became its chairman. Since then, March 8 is the anniversary of the school, at 19In 27, a kindergarten section was opened. In total, 60 students studied in the secondary school, 17 students in the primary and kindergarten schools. In 1928, a men’s high school was opened. Due to the increase in the number of students, houses No. 45 and 47 on Cai Yan Road near Cai Tak Bun were rented out as school buildings. On the first floor there were classrooms for elementary and children’s sections. The second and third floors were used as a student hostel. In 1930, the first 3 students graduated from high school. At 19In 32, a women’s hostel was opened, and the number of students increased to 426 people. A hall for 200 students was built at the back of the main school building in Kai Tak Bun. In 1934, thanks to the outstanding work of Moonsang College, the Hong Kong government began to subsidize the school (school with special grants). In the fall of 1937, the women’s secondary department was closed, and all female students were transferred to Hip Yunn College. In 1938, the first day of the return home was held.

Campus moving period (1939-1940)

In preparation for the 10th anniversary ceremony, it was proposed to buy a piece of land at the end of Grampian Road to build a school campus instead of renting houses. HK$11,000 was raised to purchase most of the land for the current campus. In September 1939, the first phase of construction of the school campus, including the hall and 12 classrooms, was completed at the present site. There were 525 students in total. On November 26, Moonsang College Alumni Association was founded.

Renewal period (1945-1954)

In August 1945, the Japanese Army surrendered. However, the school campus was still occupied by the British Army. The civilian houses on How Wong Road were rented out and the elementary school was reopened. There were 94 students in total at the school. In May 1946, the Grampian Road campus was returned to the school, but only the initial part was rebuilt. The number of students increased to 200. In 1947, the main road on the campus and the school gates were rebuilt. The school applied to the government and became a non-profit private school. At 19In 1949, a joint education section was opened. One additional class was built in the summer of that year, and two additional classes were built in the winter. In 1950 the Student Association was established and the total number of students increased to 500. In 1953 with the addition of seven. classrooms, the middle school resumed to S5 and had only 17 classes and 785 students. In 1954, five students participated in the first English HKCEE after World War II.

Extension period I (1955-1962)

In 1955 the Kindergarten Section was reopened and a new building with 6 classrooms for the Kindergarten Section was completed in January 1956. The first phase of construction of the current Unit D was completed in November 1957. In 1961, the sports ground was expanded with additional sections. leased from the Hong Kong Government following the completion of Dumbarton Road and expanded to approximately 20,000 square feet (1900 m 2 ). At the same time, Moonsang College was classified as a subsidized private school by the Department of Education.

In 1962, the current block C and other block D classes were completed. There were 6 kindergartens, 29 primary classes and 12 secondary classes. The total number of students is 2030.

Expansion II period and current status (1963 – present)

Classes S6 and S7 resumed in 1963 and 1964 respectively. That year there were 19 middle grades, 30 primary grades, and 8 kindergarten grades. At 19In 65 the school gates on Inverness Road were completed. In 1968, the old hall was rebuilt and completed on January 9, 1969. It was later named as Lim Por Yen Hall (Block B). The hall is designed for 1020 spectators. Under the hall there are 6 classrooms and a gymnasium. The old kindergarten building was rebuilt in 1976, and that year the elementary school was approved as a secondary school. On March 6 of the same year, the school celebrated its golden jubilee. There were open days and exhibitions. The new kindergarten/primary section building (Block A) was completed on June 1977 years old. After that, work began on the construction of the Rufus Huang Memorial Building (Block E), which was completed in 1979. History

    Sacred Heart Academy (1841–1917)

Manhattanville’s history traces its roots back to Sacred Heart Academy, founded over 175 years ago on the Lower East Side. New York. In August 1841, the Society of the Sacred Heart (RSCJ), a Catholic religious order dedicated to the education of young women, established an academy at 412 Houston Street in a cramped narrow lane on the southeast corner of Manhattan Island facing the East River. [3] In September 1844 the boarding school moved to Ravenswood in the Queen’s Astoria section. However, after two years, this place turned out to be too remote. [4] In 1847, the growing Academy moved to Jacob Lorillard’s former estate in the village of Manhattanville on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. At that time the city was still eight miles north of New York, still clustered around the south end at the Battery. The academy has always been diverse, with a large proportion of the student population being made up of recent immigrants from Latin America and Europe. [6] In 1880, the Academy began offering its female students a two-year post-secondary program of study, heralding a future in higher education.

An aerial view of the former Manhattanville College of the Sacred Heart campus in the Manhattanville area of northwest Manhattan, New York, taken from the south looking northeast.

College of the Sacred Heart (1917–1937)

In the early 20th century, higher education opportunities for women expanded as many former academies, seminaries, institutions, and junior schools transitioned to college status. [7] Shortly before the United States declared war on the German Empire and entered World War I On March 1, 1917, the Academy of the Sacred Heart in Manhattanville received a Provisional Charter from the Regent of the State of New York to offer a bachelor’s degree as the “College of the Sacred Heart”. The first bachelor’s degrees were awarded in 1918. The Absolute Charter was signed on May 29, 1919. As the college grew, New York City also expanded northward, towards the far northern edge of Manhattan Island towards the Harlem River, transforming the surrounding area from a rural village into Manhattan’s diverse residential/commercial areas bordering the Harlem and Morningside Heights neighborhoods. At 19In 1935, the College of the Sacred Heart received accreditation from the prestigious Association of American Universities. [8] The official name was changed to “Manhattanville College of the Sacred Heart” in 1937. [9]

Manhattanville College of the Sacred Heart (1937–1966)

In the 1930s, the Manhattanville student body consisted of about 200 female students. Despite its small size, the college made headlines across the country for taking a strong stand in promoting racial equality in the decades before the Civil Rights Movement of the late 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. In May 1933, the students created the “Manhattanville Resolutions”, a document in which they declared their active commitment to racial justice. [10] This commitment was tested when the first female Negro student was admitted to the college in 1938. Alumni reactions to the racially integrated but all-female student body have been mixed and somewhat controversial. [11] While the overwhelming majority of letters praised Manhattanville for its courageous actions, College President Grace Dammann, RSCJ, saw the negative reviews as an opportunity to open hearts and minds. 31 May 19At 38 years old, at the annual class day meeting of students, she gave an impassioned speech called “Principles Against Prejudice.” She stated that education is the key to overcoming prejudice.

“The more we know about human action and thought across time and throughout the world, the more we realize that beauty, goodness, and truth are not the monopoly of any age, any group, or any race. [ 12]

The speech was published in several national publications and established Manhattanville as a leader in higher education and human rights. [13] When President Dammann died suddenly in 1945, New York Times obituary summarized her life’s work under the heading: “Mother Dammann, College President: Head of Manhattanville since 1930 Dies – Champion of Racial Equality.” [14] Manhattanville will continue its social action work, first through the National Federation of Catholic College Students and to this day with the Duchenne Center for Religion and Social Justice and the Connie Hogarth Center for Social Action. Mary Louise (Mami) Jenkins, RSCJ, was the first African American student to graduate from Manhattanville, and June Mulvaney was the first African American student to study Russian in Manhattanville. [15] [16]

As with many colleges after World War II, neighboring City College of New York (C. C.N.Y. – part of the City University of New York) struggled to accommodate the growing number of college students o. your campus. In 1946, the Mayor of New York formed a special commission to study the resource needs of the city’s public educational institutions. Their recommendations will have particularly strong implications for the future of neighboring Manhattanville Sacred Heart College.

In February 1949, The New York Times reported that City College was campaigning to acquire a Manhattanville campus to expand its facilities. [17] Same month C.C.N.Y. distributed a pamphlet titled “Nowhere Else: City College Petition to Buy Manhattanville Property.” The New York City Board of Estimate agreed and transferred the campus to City College through a conviction and eminent domain lawsuit. [18] In September 1949, the Manhattanville Board of Regents purchased Whitelaw Reed Homestead, north of the city in suburban Westchester County. In the next two years, the conviction proceeded through the New York State Supreme Court system. Ultimately, Manhattanville was allocated approximately $8.8 million ($8,808,620) for the Manhattan campus and buildings. [19] Groundbreaking ceremony held at the new campus near Harrison, in Purchase, NY on May 3, 1951 years old. The new campus, with its buildings, was renovated and other building work was completed in October 1952. [20]

    Manhattanville College (1966-present)

With additional facilities and growth space, the student population increased from 400 female students in 1950 to 700 students by 1960. Over the next decade, student numbers doubled again, reaching 1,400 by 1970. Manhattanville was microhistory. the transformation of society into the Roman Catholic Church, higher education, and American society as a whole at 1960s. In 1966, the college’s board of trustees voted to change the school charter and remove the words “Sacred Heart” from the official name of the college. This became an important moment in the secularization of the college. Between 1966 and 1970, the Manhattanville administration oversaw the gradual removal of Catholic symbols and traditions from campus. Although the college has been governed by an independent board of trustees since its founding in 1841, it has been strongly identified with the Roman Catholic Church and these changes have been difficult for the community. K 19In 69, the charter of the college was expanded, and now it could include both women and men. The first class of coeducational freshmen entered Manhattanville in August 1971.

In 1973, students’ academic experience was enhanced by an important on-campus research funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Interviews with Manhattanville residents led to the development of a portfolio system, a personalized and managed self-assessment that reflects the development of each student. Today, the ATLAS program continues this tradition. At 19In 1965, the college introduced its first graduate program, the Master of Education degree. In the fifty years since then, the number of graduate programs has increased significantly. Since 1993, the School of Graduate and Professional Studies, now the School of Business, has developed master’s and certificate programs in various professional and business fields. In 2012, the Manhattanville Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing was officially approved. The first doctoral program was introduced in 2010 by Ed.D. in educational leadership from the school of education. [21]

Campus Campus Convention Avenue (1847– 1952)

Manhattanville takes its name from its location between 1847 and 1952 years. The school, still an academy at the time, purchased Jacob Lorillard’s estate in 1847 in a rural village called Manhattanville. [26] Over the next century, New York expanded from a farming village to a West Harlem neighborhood.

The campus was located between 130th and 135th streets. The eastern border is Convent Avenue, and its western border is St. Nicholas Terrace. In 1949, proceedings began to incorporate the campus into the existing City College campus. Today it is known as City College South Campus. The last remaining buildings from the Manhattanville era are Park Hall (then known as Benziger) and Mott Hall (a parochial school during Manhattanville’s time). [27]

    Reed Estate (1860-1949)

Manhattanville purchased its current 100-acre campus in 1949. The first owner of the site was Ben Holladay, who bought the estate in the 1860s and named it Ophir Farm after a silver mine in Nevada. [28] The Holladay family built a mansion called Ophir Hall, a family chapel, and several outbuildings. However, after several family deaths and financial difficulties, Ben Holladay left the estate in 1873. [29]

In 1888 the property was purchased by Whitelaw Reed and his wife, Elizabeth Mills Reid. Whitelaw was the editor of The New York Tribune and held various political positions, including ambassador to France and England. Elizabeth was the daughter of Darius Ogden Mills, founder of The Bank of California. The Raids renovated the existing Ophir Hall and equipped it with the latest household items, including electricity. However, shortly before completion, faulty wiring set off a fire that destroyed the house on July 14, 1888. The Rides were rebuilt under the guidance of renowned architectural firm McKim, Mead and White. This house is designed in the style of a gothic castle and is built on the existing foundations. The construction of the castle was completed in 1892 year. [30] The three-story building, containing the East Library and West Room, was completed in 1912. [31] Whitelaw Read died while serving as Ambassador to England in 1912. Elizabeth Mills Reed died in 1931 and the entire contents of the house were auctioned off in 1935. In 1947, the Reid family put the estate up for sale.

Reid Castle was dedicated to Elizabeth Mills Reed on September 19, 1969. In 1974, the US Department of the Interior listed the building on the National Register of Historic Places in recognition of its historical and architectural significance. [32]

    Campus Purchase (1952-present)

The new Manhattanville campus was completed in 1952 with six buildings: Reed Castle, restored for use as an administration building, library, academic building, Brownson Hall; music building Pius X Hall; Benziger Canteen and Founders’ Dormitory.

Growing student numbers led to the addition of Spellman Hall in 1957. The Kennedy Gymnasium, also completed in 1957, was made possible by a grant from the Lt. Joseph Kennedy, Jr. Foundation. The Kennedy family dedicated the gymnasium in honor of their daughter, Kathleen, Marquess of Hartington. The dedication of Kennedy Grammar School and Spellman Hall took place on October 27, 1957 years presided over by Francis Cardinal Spellman, Archbishop of New York. Present were Joseph P. Kennedy, Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy 11, Jean Kennedy Smith 49, and Ethel Skakel Kennedy 49. Edward M. Kennedy gave the dedication speech. [33]

During Purchase’s first decade, campus worship was located in the West Room. The chapel was completed in 1963 and named after President Eleanor O’Byrne, RSCJ. O’Byrne is the longest-serving president, having lasted from 1945 to 1966. Dammann and Tenney Halls were the last residential buildings completed in 1966. In 1991, forty-eight faculty and staff housing units added a new dimension to the Manhattanville campus community. [32]

On September 26, 2006, the Manhattanville community dedicated the Ohnell Environmental Center. The center includes a classroom housed in a non-invasive, LEED-compliant structure designed by Maya Lin, architect of the Vietnam War Memorial. The project also included the restoration of the Holladay Stone Chapel with new stonework and a glass roof providing a uniquely reflective space on campus. In 2008, the Berman Center was completed. [34] This building currently houses the communications and media department, Berger Art Gallery, student radio station MVL; school newspaper Touchstone; dance studio and fitness center. The campus has undergone a number of renovations over the past few years, including improvements to the library, dining hall, gym, athletic fields, tennis courts, and campus walkways. In 2012, the college opened “Heritage Hall”, a permanent exhibition of the history of the college.

Pius X School of Liturgical Music

Pius X School of Liturgical Music was opened in 1916 as part of the college. It was founded by Justine Ward, who developed methods for teaching Gregorian chant, emulating those of the monks at Solesmes, and by Mother Georgia Stevens, RSCJ, musician and Roman Catholic nun. [39] The faculty has over the years included Ward, Achille Bragers and André Moquero. [ citation needed ] The school has thousands of music teachers, including Cecilia Claire Bocard and Thomas Mark Liotta. The namesake of the school was Pope Pius X, an adherent of sacred music, who initiated the reform of the liturgy in the 20th century. Institute closed at 1969 year. In 2010, the Gregorian chant, held in Pius X Hall as part of the inauguration celebrations of the previous president, drew a crowded audience of alumni, students and faculty.
