Medal for a veteran, “children of war” and “Katyusha”.

How Victory Day is celebrated in Kansas City

For the third year, a native of Ulyanovsk, Svetlana Yager, together with like-minded people, spends Russian holidays in Kansas City, USA. The 75th Victory Day is planned to be celebrated on a particularly large scale – with the participation of veterans and “children of the war”. Read more in the material ulpravda.ru.

Svetlana Yager moved from Ulyanovsk to Missouri in 1999. A year later, she was invited to join the Kansas City ethnic committee, which brought together representatives from more than 60 countries. Our compatriot represented Russia in it. In 2017, Svetlana opened the Russian House of Kansas City public organization for everyone who speaks Russian and loves our language and culture. They are often joined by Native Americans – the meetings are so touching, sincere and at home. nine0005

The truth about the war shocked

Every VE Day celebration in Kansas City is different. In 2018, a gallery of portraits of the Heroes of the Great Patriotic War was presented for the first time. At the same time, Svetlana had the idea to organize a video greeting from Ulyanovsk. It was prepared by a friend – Anzhelika Naumova – together with schoolchildren of gymnasium No. 1 with the support of the head of the Ulyanovsk branch of the Peace Society, Lyudmila Lyashenko. The program of the evening, as a rule, is conducted in English and Russian, but everyone picked up Katyusha when they went out into the street with portraits of heroes. People who moved to the United States from different parts of the former Soviet Union, not hiding their tears, asked to hold such evenings in the future. And the meetings continued. nine0005

– In 2019, we told our guests about the main milestones of the Great Patriotic War, about the number of victims, about how multinational the Soviet army was, presented photo and video presentations about front-line soldiers – grandfathers and great-grandfathers of representatives of our Russian-speaking community, – says Svetlana. – Representatives of other national communities, as well as the consul of the city administration, came to honor the memory of the dead and support our holiday. Some were shocked to learn how tragic and large-scale the Great Patriotic War was. nine0005

A year ago, for the first time in Kansas City, the “children of the war” were honored, who were present in the hall and remembered those terrible days. Many people fell in love with the live concert, which is prepared by adults together with children. Among the young artists is the 12-year-old son of our compatriot Oliver. The beloved by many “Katyusha”, “Smuglyanka”, “In the dugout”, “Moscow Nights” sounded.

– Finally, we marched with portraits of veterans, flags of the Soviet Union, the USA, the 150th division, which hoisted the flag on the Reichstag, balloons to the memorial to the victims of the Holocaust. Of course, the “Immortal Regiment”, which is organized by our compatriots in New York, Washington, San Francisco, is much larger, because more of our compatriots live there, – the interlocutor shares. “There were about 100 of us. I hope that this year there will be twice as many participants. nine0005

The reward will find a hero

This year, Victory Day will be celebrated on May 6, so that Russian-speaking citizens can come to the holiday without violating their plans. On May 9, as a rule, they spend at home at a festive dinner or with friends at a picnic, remember veterans, sing songs. Moreover, representatives of the local media promised to come in order to tell about the Russian holiday on TV channels and in newspapers by the solemn date.

– We will prepare video presentations about the “children of war” and back them up with stories. One woman will come who still remembers how there were attacks in her hometown and she hid in a bomb shelter, – says Svetlana. – We will certainly remember the front-line soldiers.

Representatives of the Kansas City Russian House will especially honor Anatoly Tov, a veteran of the Great Patriotic War, who lives in Kansas City. He is already over 90 years old, now he is very sick. Svetlana Yager with her team and representatives of the partner organization, the Jewish Social Service, helped the veteran’s family prepare a package of documents for receiving a commemorative medal from Russia for the 75th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War. nine0005

– We believe that Victory Day is very important not only for Russians, but for the whole world, – Svetlana Yager is convinced. – We want as many people as possible to know about this day and appreciate peace on Earth.

8 amusement parks that will bring books back to children

  • Forbes Life

Pippi Longstocking, Alice, Pinocchio and other literary heroes who inspired the creators of the parks

Sometimes, when reading a book, one really wants to be in the place of its heroes – to experience their adventures or just touch their everyday life. And amusement parks based on literary works, to some extent, allow you to do this. In addition, such parks are a rare example of combining entertainment and educational functions. Visitors here are not only offered to join reading, but also to ride plenty of rides. nine0005

Finished reading here

Such parks often become true masterpieces, not inferior to their original book sources, because famous artists, architects, sculptors, and sometimes even historians and philologists are involved in their creation. Forbes has selected 8 theme parks that will help you immerse yourself in the atmosphere of your favorite books.

Peace Astrid Lindgren (Sweden, Vimmerby)

Open: June 2 to August 28

Finished reading here

Ticket price: €24. 5 for children, €36.5 for adults

The theme park based on the books of Astrid Lindgren is located in the Swedish city of Vimmerby, where the writer spent her childhood. The center of the park is the so-called Tiny Town, in which houses are slightly taller than a child: this is a reduced copy of Vimmerby from Lindgren’s childhood.

The World of Astrid Lindgren has Carlson’s roof, Rasmus’ barn, and even the old castle where Ronja, the robber’s daughter, was born. You can also look at the Villa “Chicken” – the home of Pippi Longstocking. Here, by the way, there is a special container: in it, children can leave their baby nipples – as a sign of abandoning this habit. nine0005

Characters from Lindgren’s books walk around the park. At certain hours, one of the two stages – large and small – hosts performances: theatrical performances and concerts of folk music performed by the same Lindgren characters. And besides, a puppet theater operates on the territory of the park.

The World of Astrid Lindgren was founded 20 years ago in 1981 and today covers 20 acres. It is better to book a visit for 2 days in order to have time to explore the park in full (for those who decide to stay overnight, there are wooden cottages). Renting one of them for the night costs about $250. However, places must be booked in advance, as there are many tourists in the park in summer. nine0005

Moomin World (Finland, Naantali)

Open: from 7 June to 28 August

Finished reading here

Ticket price: €22

Finnish writer Tove Jansson published the first Moomin book in 1945, and this was the beginning of a real Moomin boom that swept dozens of countries, because Jansson’s books were translated into more than 30 languages. Figurines of small trolls, dishes and clothes with their image are perhaps the most popular souvenir products in Finland, and characters from Jansson’s books even adorned the sides of Finnair aircraft. nine0005

Actually, the “World of Moomin” recreates in detail the atmosphere of fairy tales, illustrations for which were made by Jansson herself. On a small island where the park is located, Snufkin’s camp, Snork’s workshop, Hattifnut’s cave and the blue house of the Moomin trolls fit in. In addition, the park has a sandy beach that is by no means fictional, so it’s worth taking your swimwear with you.

By the way, in the diner you can try dishes prepared according to Moominmamma’s recipes: meatballs in tomato sauce, vegetable roll and chicken fillet steak. And a letter sent from the local post office will be delivered to the addressee anywhere in the world – with a Moomin-dol stamp on the envelope. nine0005

Dickens World (Great Britain, Kent, Chatham Marytime)

Open: all year round

Finished reading here

Ticket price: £ £8 for children, £13 for adults

For those who are new to Dickens, the theme park dedicated to the writer will seem too gloomy: dark alleys, shabby walls, rickety roofs, dirty drains ditches. However, these scenery very faithfully depict Britain in the Victorian era, when the action of Dickens’ books unfolds. nine0005

The construction of a theme park on the site of the old shipyard, where the writer’s father once worked, cost about £60 million. And now in Dickens World you can sit at a desk at the school where Nicholas Nickleby studied (The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby ”), climb into the pit of debtors and visit the house of the greedy Scrooge, where ghosts are found (“Christmas stories”). But especially popular with visitors is a boat trip along the route that Magwitch fled from justice from the novel Great Expectations. However, this attraction is categorically not recommended for pregnant women and people suffering from heart disease. nine0005

The creators of Dickens’ World are not without a sense of humor. They turned the lair of Fagin, a character from The Adventures of Oliver Twist, into a playground. As you know, Fagin taught his young wards to steal, following the assertion that children learn knowledge better if presented in a playful way.

Adventure Wonderland (UK, Dorset, Bournemouth)

Open: March to September

Finished reading here

Ticket price: £11.25

Although Lewis Carroll’s books are not necessarily children’s books, the Alice in Wonderland theme park is designed for the youngest visitors. Children are waiting for the adventure castle of the Cheshire Cat, a game of cricket with the Queen of Hearts, a ride on the Caterpillar engine, as well as crazy tea drinking in giant cups. The park even has a living area where the White Rabbit lives. Adult connoisseurs of Carroll’s work can be impressed by the impressive size of the labyrinth – the third largest in the UK. It is made up of 5200 bushes, its length is 2. 8 km. In the secluded corners of the labyrinth, the characters of Alice in Wonderland are hiding, who will tell you how to find a way out, however, only to those who correctly answer their questions. Accustomed to the changeable climate, the creators of the park promise: “Whatever the weather, the fun is guaranteed.” Therefore, on the territory of Adventure Wonderland there is an indoor playground. True, it is a miniature Aztec city and has nothing to do with Alice in Wonderland. nine0005

Mark Twain Cave (USA, Missouri, Hannibal)

Open: all year round

Finished reading here

Ticket price: $2. 10-$9.95 for children, $15.95 for adults

The first mention of a mysterious cave near the city of Hannibal appeared in the winter of 1819-1820 – it was discovered by a certain Jack Simms while hunting . Since then, there have been many more discoverers, but today the cave bears the name of the writer Mark Twain, the most revered inhabitant of Hannibal. By the way, it was this cave that became a trap for the heroes of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. nine0005

A little less than 3.5 km long karst cave consists of several tiers connected by winding passages. The cave is electrified, and its visit does not require special skills. However, tourists are strongly advised to keep up with the guide so as not to end up in the position of Tom Sawyer and Becky Thatcher.

Visitors will be told that Mark Twain’s Cave used to be a haven not only for fictional characters, but also for very real people. For example, it is commonly believed that the famous American criminal Jesse James was hiding in it. Mark Twain himself wrote that during his childhood, many bypassed the cave: supposedly an eccentric surgeon from St. Louis kept the body of his dead fourteen-year-old daughter there – in alcohol, in a two-layer cylinder. nine0005

Despite such a gloomy past, now the Mark Twain Cave is very popular with local romantics: from time to time weddings are played under its vaults. There is even a special place for ceremonies, marked with a sign “Wedding Corner”.

Pinocchio Park (Italy, Tuscany, Collodi)

Open: all year round

Finished reading here

Ticket price: €8 for children, €11 for adults

The real name of the author of The Adventures of Pinocchio, Carlo Collodi, is Lorenzini. And he took the pseudonym Collodi for himself by the name of the village where his mother was from. Therefore, it is in Collodi that the Pinocchio Park is located.

The park was founded in 1956, but it can hardly be called a traditional amusement park: it is rather an open-air museum where scenes from the life of Pinocchio unfold. And sometimes not the most rosy – after all, in the fairy tale filled with biblical motifs, Collodi has a lot of scary episodes. So, in the Pinocchio Park there is a sculpture depicting four rabbits who carry a small coffin on their shoulders: according to the plot, they came for Pinocchio when he refused to take medicine. nine0005

The park hosts exhibitions of artists inspired by Collodi’s book and children’s literature in general. Children will have a master class on making puppets, performances in a puppet theater, and rides on a carousel. And it will be interesting for parents to look at the bronze and steel sculptures made by the famous Italian sculptor Pietro Consarga, whose works are in the collections of the Tate Gallery in London and the Museum of Modern Art in Paris.

Near the Pinocchio Park is the Villa Garzoni and the Butterfly House, where exotic insects live under a glass dome. The cost of a ticket, which allows you to enter the Villa Garzoni, and the Butterfly House, and the Pinocchio Park, is €20 for an adult, €16 for a child. nine0005

Worlds of Fun, (USA, Missouri, Kansas City)

Open: from April to October

Finished reading here

Ticket price: $29. 99 for children, $44.99 for adults

Worlds of Fun is an American amusement park dedicated to Jules Verne’s novel Around the World in 80 Days. However, on one of the variants of the logo in the basket of a balloon is not Phileas Fogg, but the dog Snoopy, a character from a popular American comic book. nine0005

The park is divided into five sections: Scandinavia, Africa, Europe, East and America. But visitors to Worlds of Fun will not be able to follow Phileas Fogg’s route strictly: here the journey starts from Scandinavia, for Jules Verne’s hero – from Paris.

Worlds of Fun boasts several unique rides, including one of the world’s most famous carousels, the Grand Carrousel. It was built in 1926 for the Philadelphia World’s Fair celebrating the 150th anniversary of the independence of the United States. Each of the 64 wooden horses has a unique design. nine0005

Next to the park is the Worlds of Fun Village, a makeshift village where you can stay overnight. In summer, a night for a family of 3 in a cottage will cost $175.

Magical Kingdom of Camelot (Great Britain, Lancashire, Chorley, Charnock Richard)

Open: from April to September

Finished reading here

Ticket price: £26 (adults and children over 1 meter tall)

Legends of the Arthurian cycle have inspired many writers, from Chrétien de Troyes to Mark Twain. And for the British, King Arthur is just the main national legend. Therefore, it is not surprising that it was in England that the Magical Kingdom of Camelot theme park appeared – an analogue of Arthur’s residence, where, however, in addition to the arena for jousting tournaments and the wizard Merlin’s workshop, there are carousels and roller coasters. nine0005

Despite the fact that the creators of modern Camelot tried to observe medieval aesthetics in everything, absurdities could not be avoided. So, for example, the booths in the attraction called “Flight of the Falcon” are made in the form of balloons, the invention of which dates back to the 18th century. Apparently, the designers were haunted by the laurels of Twain’s Yankee from Connecticut, who succeeded in modernizing the Middle Ages.

Be that as it may, the main thing worth visiting the Magical Kingdom of Camelot are the jousting tournaments that take place every day on the arena of Avalon (the mythical island where King Arthur is buried).
