Children are notorious for making a mess. Sometimes it’s on the floor, other times it’s on the kitchen table. And sometimes it’s even worse with drawings or writing on the wall. If one or more of your children like to draw on the walls, converting their bedroom or playroom walls into writable walls may be the perfect solution.

Depending on your budget, size of the wall and age of your child, use one of the following 6 options to turn your kid’s bedroom or playroom walls into something they can write on and won’t get in trouble.

1. Magnetic Wall

Some moms might be worried about giving their child a wall they can paint, draw or color on, as it could cause them to paint on every other wall to. If you are worried – there is a still a solution to give your child creativity without ruining a wall: magnetic wall.

A magnetic wall is great for young kids who can’t use paint or crayons on their own. You can DIY this with sheet metal and cardboard, or you can purchase a smaller magnetic easel.

Once the wall or easel is up, all you need to do is pick out your child’s favorite magnetic tiles (big or small) and let them have it! If you have magnetic tiles, you can also leave your kids little notes for when they wake up.

2. Formica Writable Surface

A Formica Writable Surface is similar to a white-board however it can be placed on walls, tables, cabinets, doors and anywhere else you can think of. These dry erase surfaces are kid friendly and come in over 50 different colors.

You can purchase a Formica Writable Surface in a horizontal or vertical format. On top of that – it’s durable and stain resistant! What more could you need for your little kids.

3. Wall Mounted Easel

If your child likes to keep their artwork and hates to see it wiped away, painted over or covered up – stick to putting together a mounted easel. While you can have a self-mounted, closet door mounted or even a dresser mounted easel, a wall mounted easel can save space and scratch at painting on the wall itch your kid might have.

You can purchase one of these easels on Amazon, however they do tend to be on the more expensive side. If you want to make your own, follow this DIY tutorial from Arin Solange At Home who uses Ikea hacks to make this family friendly wall-mounted easel.

4. Stick-0n Dry Erase Decals

If you want to give your child a chance to write on the walls, but don’t want to redo the entire wall or spend hours on a DIY project, use stick-on dry erase decals. Found on Amazon or at your local Target or Home Depot, WallPops are the perfect solution.

WallPops are circular dry erase decals that come in a multitude of colors. You can even make an emoji decal! These are a great way to get your child involved in the project as they can pick where they want the decals to go on the wall. All you need to do is pick the color they want and place it on the wall.

5. Whiteboard

When it comes to a whiteboard in your child’s bedroom, you have a few options. You could purchase a whiteboard on Amazon for relatively cheap. Staples also offers a stick on whiteboard option at 3×4.

If you want to make the wall more original and creative, use several small whiteboards to fill up a larger section of the wall or to create a design. Another option is to use whiteboard paint. This paint can be picked up at your local Home Depot or Lowes. For the best quality and performance, they suggest waiting three days to let the paint dry.

6. DIY Chalkboard

Create an Instant Gallery With Your Kids’ Art

SHOW SIDEBAR

There’s never enough room on the fridge to display the countless amount of kids art that’s brought home. Why hide it all away when you could create a giant gallery wall to show off their masterpieces! Don’t worry, there are no holes involved in this display, so your walls are safe. This creative décor idea is perfect to fill up a large wall without spending much money. Not only does it look great, it only takes minutes to complete. Don’t hesitate – just go for it!

Admit it — we all have a Tupperware box somewhere filled with drawings and paintings that you or the kids don’t want to part with. We understand, each picture is precious and nobody wants to regret letting go a piece of their youngsters’ childhood. Too many of these treasures end up locked away, so we say no more! Dive into your collection (or Tupperware box) and select some art to display while saving some others to rotate in later. Let your kids decide what they want to hang, and since we’re using our “magic” magnets, swapping is super easy. Refresh your walls whenever you or the kiddos feel like it, and watch it transform over time with new drawings.

Pick a wall in the house that needs a pop of color and don’t think for a moment that it has to be a basement wall, or out of the way. Why not choose the family room, kitchen, office, entryway, or anywhere that gets lots of traffic for everyone to enjoy little Picassos’ work. Such a gallery will add a unique personality to your space, and the kids will be proud to show off their art to family and friends – consider it a wall of pride!

There are no display rules here, anything goes! Let kids be kids and allow them to decide where they want to hang stuff, or even swap things in and out over time. They can place their artwork as low as they want on the wall, or as high as they want with mommy or daddy’s help! Keep adding to the space until the entire wall is covered, or just keep it to a central area. It’s all up to you!

Within minutes you’ll end up with a colourful tribute to your kiddos’ creativity, all without making a single hole in the wall.

How to hang your little Picassos’ art without damaging the walls?

Here are the ‘top-hat’ magnets we used to hang all of the art. The black top has a magnet that works with a round disk with sticky adhesive backing.

The first step is to peel off the plastic cover revealing the adhesive.

Place the top hat on the ‘display’ side of the art and then place the disk on the back, non-sticky, side of the paper.

They magnetically stick together.

Now, take the art and place it on your chosen spot allowing the adhesive to secure the disk to the wall. Since this is freestyle hanging, if you don’t like where you placed it you can just move it. It’s that easy!

To remove the disk from the wall, use the small clear ‘guitar pick’ that comes with the magnets. It’s easy, painless, and doesn’t leave any sticky residue on the wall.

The beauty of such a gallery is its vibrant colors. Your kids will be able to quickly display their pieces, and point out their favourite ones each day. The magnets come in black and white, both neutral tones to let the artwork shine!

How cute is this? For those social media savvy parents out there, this gallery wall is the perfect background for those precious instagram snapshots.

These magnets are also perfect to hang recipes on in the kitchen backsplash, Xmas cards during the holidays, calendars, paint swatches, lunch money. ..pretty much anything you can think of that is light.

4 interesting finishes – INMYROOM

Tips

They say that houses and walls help. Modern ways of finishing reinforce this saying: walls help to draw plans for the future, create a menu for a festive dinner and educate children .

1. Slate paint

Slate paint is no longer a novelty, it has long established itself as a durable, wear-resistant and moisture-resistant coating. The paint easily lays down on the prepared surface of the walls, as well as on glass, wood, metal and plastic, it washes well and is cleaned with a dry and wet cloth.

The most common color is black, it is more familiar, it clearly shows inscriptions and drawings in various colors of chalk. But there is green and blue paint and, perhaps, it will be more suitable for some interior. nine0003

Slate paint can be used in all rooms: in home office it will create a working atmosphere and a positive mood, you can write down current goals and tasks on it, good ideas so that you do not forget, and wise thoughts that do not let you fall into despondency when everything goes wrong.

In kitchen slate paint can be used to paint a part of a wall, a refrigerator or a piece of furniture for cooking recipes, a list of groceries to buy and good morning greetings from home. It’s good to write on a slate every day: “I love you!” This helps to avoid many problems. nine0003

Restriction in use: slate paint must not be applied near the stove, it is not resistant to oil and fat.

Oddly enough, in bathroom slate paint is also appropriate: against a black background, sanitary ware looks dazzlingly white, and kind words in a relaxing atmosphere cheer up even more truly.

In children’s slate board allows you to give your child a little happiness: imagine, drawing on the walls is not forbidden! Moreover, you can even draw with your child, and it is not known who will have more joy. nine0003

2. Magnetic paint

Magnetic paint contains a fine metal fraction and, after applying several layers, gives the surface the property of holding a magnet. Any notes, drawings, posters and magazine clippings can be attached to the wall and changed whenever you want!

Restriction in use: magnetic paint can be wallpapered, but keep in mind that the heavier the object you want to hold on the wall, the thicker the paint layer should be. nine0003

3. Marker paint

Marker paint is a two-component acrylic material, environmentally friendly, applied to any smooth and prepared surface of walls and furniture, can be white and transparent. Transparent is convenient to use in an already finished interior (without repainting walls and objects).

You can draw on a wall with marker paint with a felt-tip pen. This coating is often used in the nursery. Helps to create space for creativity, inspiration, development of the child’s imagination. nine0003

4. And now – all at once!

The combination of magnetic and marker paint, or magnetic and slate creates a magical effect: you can draw on such a surface and attach finished drawings or magazine clippings. It is believed that this helps to plan for the future: you attach an image of the place where you want to be, say, in five years, and go to the goal step by step.

  • Coloring wallpapers

Decorating a children’s room today can be done in different ways. A huge selection of roll materials allows you to choose canvases that help not only decorate the room beautifully, but also provide the child with the opportunity to actively develop.

Drawing wallpapers are very interesting from this point of view – they can be glued to the children’s room if the child begins to actively show interest in this type of art. nine0003

Types of wallpaper for drawing

There are several options to solve the problem. These are:

  • Chalk wallpaper.
  • Marker sheets.
  • Rolled coloring materials.

A brief analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of each option will help to suggest which is better to choose.

Chalk wallpaper

What is chalk wallpaper? This is a material that allows you to create a kind of blackboard on the wall, on which you can draw with multi-colored crayons. Cloths are produced in rolls, each width is 107 cm, length is 50 m. You can buy the whole roll or individual pieces. The seller in the store cuts the fragments of the right size, so when buying chalk wallpaper, there is no need to overpay for the surplus. nine0003

Tip! When buying such materials, allowances must be taken into account when cutting. It will be unpleasant if, when you come home, start gluing such wallpapers, you find that the canvases are missing quite a bit.

In fact, chalk wallpaper is a self-adhesive film (it can be clearly seen in the photo). In order to stick them to the wall, it is enough to remove the paper protective layer from the inside. The technology of gluing the film is extremely simple. It is well illustrated in the video posted at the end of the article. nine0003

The front layer of chalk wallpaper is a vinyl coating, which helps to form a surface that is easy to write on with chalk. If necessary, their trace is well erased with a damp cloth. The manufacturer gives high guarantees, he claims that the drawing erasure cycle for such materials is designed for 10,000 operations.

If necessary, the film can be easily removed from the wall. When dismantled, no traces of glue remain on the wall. But in order to achieve such a result, it is important to purchase high-quality chalk wallpaper from manufacturers with a good reputation. nine0003

Please note! High-quality chalk wallpaper can be re-glued. This allows you to dismantle them from one place and stick the canvas on another, thereby changing the interior design. Manufacturers on the label indicate a similar technical feature of the product.

Chalk wallpaper can not be stuck on all surfaces, but only on a tiled base, glass, painted walls. From such canvases, you can independently cut out the figures and stick them on the walls, giving the child a new field for the realization of their fantasies. nine0003

There is another way to use the described material. Paste chalk wallpaper over the doors of a chest of drawers or linen closet, and you will get another interesting art object in the children’s room.

Please note! Wallpaper for chalk on sale are presented in two options. Some canvases help to get a slate black surface for drawing, others – emerald green. The color should be chosen according to the chosen stylistic concept of the nursery interior. nine0003

Sheets for markers

You can draw on the walls in children’s rooms not only with chalk, but also with dry markers. In this case, the possibilities for artistic expression increase markedly. But this is not the only advantage of the described choice.

  1. The described material is also self-adhesive wallpaper, sticking them is as simple as possible according to the same principle as wallpaper for chalk.
  2. Marker rolls can be glued to any surface except chalk whitewash and lime plaster. nine0069
  3. The outer layer of the canvases is quite durable. It is not afraid of mechanical impact, does not attract dust and dirt.
  4. The main advantage of using this option is the ability to create color drawings on the walls. When drawing lines with a marker, white dust is not formed as from chalk. And that means less trash in the room.
  5. The width of one roll is slightly less than a meter (90 cm), the length of one roll is 50 m. If necessary, you can ask the seller to cut off a piece of the desired size and paste not the entire wall, but only part of it, turning the central place into a real interactive whiteboard. nine0069

The price of the described materials is quite high, so they should be used very carefully. When self-gluing, it is important to follow certain rules.

  • Firstly, in order to write and draw on the walls comfortably, the base for gluing the canvas must be perfectly even.
  • Secondly, close attention must be paid to the joints of the two canvases.
  • Thirdly, when choosing and using wallpaper for chalk, it is advisable to immediately nail a wooden lath to the entire width of the wall from below. She will collect particles of crumbling chalk, thereby preventing the appearance of white dust in the nursery. nine0069

Coloring wallpapers

Coloring wallpapers help develop fine motor skills. They can paste over the entire nursery, or you can select only part of the wall for these purposes. In any case, the child will receive a huge area for entertainment.

What is coloring wallpaper? These are canvases, on the front side of which there is a black and white drawing, a graphic representation of a complex plot.
