A new children’s theater opened in Houston this August. The famous Chicago music and theater studio Bravo opened its branch in the Houston suburb of Katy. Studio director Marina Taleysnik, after moving to Houston, decided not to leave her beloved theater, which she has been running for almost 10 years, but, on the contrary, to expand it across the country.

Marina graduated from the International Solomon University in Kyiv with a degree in pedagogy, at the same time studying at a theater studio. In the US, she was educated in medicine, but her love for the theater took its toll. And when Marina’s friends – enthusiastic parents, interested in their children supporting the Russian language, traditions and culture, offered her to head the children’s theater, she agreed with pleasure. “Probably, by nature I have an organizational streak,” says Marina. – I will not hide, at first it was scary to take on such responsibility. It was necessary to take into account the abilities, experience and age of the children, to come up with something new at each lesson in order to interest each child, to try to ensure that everyone was involved and had fun. In addition, it was necessary to organize a team of teachers and parents so that everyone would feel their importance. We succeeded, and as a result, our theater became one big family. We celebrate holidays and birthdays together, go on hikes, go to nature.”

In almost 10 years, the Bravo Theater has staged about 20 performances, including The Snow Queen, Peter Pan, Dunno, Pinocchio, Thumbelina, Niels Journey with the Wild Geese, Mary Poppins “. In addition to performances, students of the Bravo studio often took part in various concert programs, including charitable ones. The guys were lucky to perform on the same stage with famous actors and musicians: D. Kharatyan, V. Olshansky, G. Khomchik, Victoria and Anton Makarsky, I. Nikolaev.

“After the performances, people come up to us to congratulate us and share their impressions. And very often our performances are the best advertisement, because children, inspired by the play of their peers, have a desire to also go into the theater,” admitted Marina Taleysnik.

Studio “Bravo” works not only with children of all ages, but also with adult actors – with professional and parents of children attending the studio, and with everyone. “It is very exciting, touching and surprising when several generations work at the same site at once,” says Marina. – In our studio, everyone will be able to find something to their liking, from an actor to a make-up artist and decorator. And we value everyone equally, without focusing on the importance of roles, since the work of each is very significant and important. Because we are one team!”

Even after moving to Houston, Marina Taleysnik still remains the head and director of the Chicago Bravo Theater, which successfully works under the guidance of experienced teachers. She comes there for the release of each performance.

“When we decided to open a branch in Katy, I was pleasantly surprised by how many people responded after placing an ad in the paper and on social media. We quickly recruited a group, and already in August we began rehearsing the play “New Year’s Adventures of Masha and Vitya”, which we will show soon,” says Marina.

“We work with all children without exception. There were times when guys came to us who had problems with communication at school, a language barrier. They all found a place in our studio, – says Marina. – I write all the scripts myself, choosing roles “for each child. ” I try to write in such a way that it would be comfortable for everyone to play – in character, in spirit and mood. We develop the strengths of each student and work on the weaknesses. We do not have such a performance where children, even beginners and the smallest, would not say at least a couple of phrases. I would like the guys to get used to the stage, some of them learn to overcome fear and tightness, others, on the contrary, would not chatter, would own emotions. All children love to play, dress up, imagine themselves as heroes of fairy tales and stories, so the theater gives them a unique opportunity to bring the game to life, develop their imagination and the ability to express themselves creatively. Children are happy to take the stage to show what they have learned, to please the audience.”

Music and dance play an important role in the Bravo studio. Musical and choreographic numbers are selected with the expectation that all our pupils sing and dance. There are numbers for a general, developing program – popular, beloved by all songs, which at the same time are good educational material, and there are songs for the performance. A musical lesson necessarily includes chanting, acquaintance with musical literacy. “It’s nice to see how children’s singing abilities manifest themselves during rehearsals,” continues Marina Taleysnik. – For some parents, the singing of a child may come as a surprise. We are working for this, so that the children open up, feel that their role, albeit tiny, is actually very important.”

“At rehearsals, the children take turns doing acting, singing and dancing. I do acting skills with them. The duties of the financial and marketing director are carried out by my husband Ed. Our music director is Mikhail Smigelsky. Children adore him and look forward to music lessons. Choreographer – Valeria Bileychuk diligently works on each number and gives children a lot of warmth and love. Chicago costume designer Elena Vinogradova, fortunately for us, also moved to Houston and continues to work with us. Our friend, set designer Alexander Lakhteonov, came from Chicago specially to prepare the scenery for the play “The Adventures of Masha and Vitya”. The artist Anna Pasenko helps him.”

The performance “New Year’s Adventures of Masha and Vitya” was successfully staged in Chicago 4 years ago, and it is staged in Houston for the first time. Marina Taleysnik believes that this fairy tale will be interesting for children of both younger and older ages: “We tried to follow the plot of the film of our childhood as much as possible, in which famous actors play, wonderful songs sound. However, it will be a surprise for viewers to see a few characters that are not in the film. All roles, except for Santa Claus, are played by children. The youngest of the participants is 4 years old, and the oldest is 18. At the end of the performance, Santa Claus will come out to talk with the audience, and each child will receive a gift from him and will be able to take a picture with Grandfather Frost and the Snow Maiden.

We now move on to general runs. The kids are working hard and getting excited. We are working hard on video effects that should impress the audience, especially young viewers. We put a lot of effort and love into each performance, and the result is a bright holiday that children make for themselves, their friends and all spectators. The play “New Year’s Adventures of Masha and Vitya” performed by young actors from the Bravo studio will take place on January 8 at 5 pm in the MATCH hall.
