Kids ‘N Shape is a registered NYC Dept of Education business and fully insured. All rides and equipment are regularly cleaned and disinfected.
Kids ‘N Shape History
Kids ‘N Shape of Howard Beach, Incorporated was founded in February of 1989 by Robert J. Guarneri a.k.a. “Coach Bob.” His goal was to get children exercising through equipment, activities, and friendly competition. Originally located in the gymnasium of the Christ Church in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn with limited equipment, Kids ‘N Shape has rose from a modest beginning. Family owned and operated since the beginning, the Guarneri family now operates two facilities located in Queens and Staten Island.
Robert began his career as a physical educator at the young age of 22 for Saint Francis De Sales School for the deaf. After becoming fluent in sign language and working with the deaf for 7 years he then took his passion to the New York City Board of Education where he would work and educate for the next 26 years of his life. During his time with the Board of Education, Coach Bob worked with all levels of needs. In 1991 the Board of Education awarded Robert with the honor of Adaptive Physical Educator of the Year. He organized many special events during his time with the City and also managed the P.S. 102 track team, leading them to win their district championship every year he coached.
While working as a full time physical educator, in 1989 Robert founded Kids ‘N Shape of Bay Ridge, Inc. It began as a small after school program teaching children how to stay fit while instilling in them lessons of teamwork and friendly competition. At the end of each school year Kids ‘N Shape hosted an infamous event for its students called “The Olympics.” This unique event was a friendly competition where students were able to demonstrate their physical skills in front of their parents and piers. It was looked forward too by all participants and the tradition of Coach Bob’s Olympics continues each year as part of our Summer Camp finale.
As Kids ‘N Shape’s popularity and following started to grow, stemming from its classes, Robert began offering birthday parties for children up until 10 years old. The combination of excellent staff, interactive activities, and fun yet physical equipment quickly made Kids ‘N Shape a local favorite for parties in the Bay Ridge area. Birthday Parties at Kids ‘N Shape facilities have since become exclusive events and one of our more popular attractions.
Today Kids ‘N Shape facilities are operated by three of Roberts four children. Rob, Paul, and Joanna grew up in Kids ‘N Shape and continue Roberts vision of teaching children how to stay fit and active. In today’s world most children would rather play video games than do physical activities. Our mission is to show children ways to enjoy themselves while they develop their gross motor skills and gain a love for physical play. This is taught to them without them even realizing it every time they come to a Kids ‘N Shape facility.

Why are children different?
Municipal budgetary preschool educational institution “Kindergarten of a general development type No.
32″ of the Nizhnekamsk municipal district of the Republic of Tatarstan
Why are children different? Why do some children behave calmly, while others cry inconsolably as soon as the door closes behind mom or dad? Why do some children refuse to play when they enter kindergarten, do not come into contact with the teacher, cannot get used to the group for a long time, while others feel “like a fish in water” from the first days? Separation from home and loved ones, meeting new adults, unfamiliar children can become a serious mental trauma for a child. The kid can perceive this as alienation, deprivation of parental love, attention, protection. It is very important that this transition be smooth, soft, non-traumatic.
It is easy to see that already in the first years of life, children differ from each other in behavior. Some are smart, energetic, others are more passive, others, although active, are slow. The ideal of most adults is an obedient child. But not every kid fits this epithet. Fighter and “good boy”, “break your head” and timid, timid, inept, requiring constant guardianship and completely independent – that’s how different they are, our kids!
What determines the individual characteristics of children? This is important to understand! Much, of course, decides education. A child is not born kind or greedy, obedient or capricious, independent or inept. These features develop gradually, under the influence of living conditions and upbringing. The health status of the child is also important. If the baby is weakened, gets sick a lot, he can become lethargic, irritable, moody.
But there are cases when children grow up and are brought up in the same conditions, in the same family, they are equally healthy, but behave differently. From birth, children differ from each other in features of the nervous system that leave an imprint on the behavior of the child. These features affect the overall mobility of the baby, the speed of movements, the pace of speech, how quickly and easily feelings arise and how strong they are. As a result, children very early begin to show themselves as nimble or slow, energetic or lethargic, more or less emotional. One child violently expresses his feelings: being dissatisfied, he cries loudly and just as vividly expresses joy, bursting into laughter, becoming delighted. Another, under similar circumstances, only whimpers softly or smiles good-naturedly.
The type of higher nervous activity is very stable and hardly amenable to change. However, it must be borne in mind that pronounced representatives of one or another type of nervous system are less common among children than the so-called “transitional”. In other words, a child can show in his behavior features that are characteristic of both one and another type.
It also happens that the true type of higher nervous activity is masked, as it were, under the influence of living conditions and upbringing. For example, it is possible that a child is naturally fast, mobile, and his phlegmatic mother does not allow him to actively move. Gradually, he becomes inactive, phlegmatic.
Excessive severity in relation to the child, abuse of punishments, constant prohibitions can also lead to masking the type of higher nervous activity, in which a child with strong nervous processes, mobile, can become timid, quiet, inactive. However, in the first years of life, typological features manifest themselves most clearly.
Balanced Child
Children with strong, balanced nervous processes are most often cheerful, cry occasionally and not without significant (from their “point of view”) causes, and when it is eliminated, they quickly calm down. They are dominated by positive emotions – joy, pleasure. Sleep is deep and long. Such a child easily comes into contact with adults, children, is not afraid of new people, which favors the formation of sociability. However, if the parents, seeking obedience, intimidate the baby, he can become timid, withdrawn, whiny.
“Smart”
In such children, the process of excitation is stronger than the process of inhibition (let’s conditionally call them excitable) . A feature of their physical development in the first year of life is an uneven increase in weight over the months – sometimes within the normal range, sometimes below it.
When feeding time approaches, such babies usually show great impatience: they cry loudly and for a long time. Having taken a small amount of food and satisfied his hunger, he can immediately fall asleep.
The sleep of such children is shallow, sensitive. The slightest conversation, even rustling in the room where the child is sleeping, can wake him up.
In such children, sociability is usually easily formed. They quickly come into contact with unfamiliar children, but they are often the instigators of conflicts, since it is more difficult for them than for other children to restrain their desires and impulses. I liked the spatula that the neighbor holds in his hands, he immediately pulls it towards him; pushes someone on the run. He did not want this, but his eternal restlessness makes him “guilty without guilt. ”
Raising such little fidgets, it is necessary to direct special efforts to develop their endurance, positive relationships with children and adults, interest in activities that require perseverance, sustained attention. This can be achieved with your emotionality, sincere interest, approval of the smallest successes of the baby.
Meatballs
The nervous processes of these children are characterized by the predominance of inhibition. They are slow, imperturbable, thanks to an even, calm behavior, they usually do not cause trouble. But some adults (choleric) , who themselves are used to doing everything at a fast pace, can be annoying with their slowness. The child must be helped to overcome his inherent inertia, and not be angry for slowness.
Children of this type often have a weight exceeding the average norm, a good steady appetite. Eat slowly, thoroughly. Their sleep is deep and long. But they sometimes lack activity. Noticing this, adults should more often encourage the baby to a variety of activities, to the manifestation of independence. You should not do for the child what he can do himself, although not as quickly as adults would like. Show some patience! The child will be pleased and encouraged by the praise of an adult, the approval of even the smallest of his successes.
Perhaps some adults like the slowness and equanimity of the child, and they do not try to overcome his inertia. After all, such a child does not cause much trouble, in general, it is convenient! But in this case, you should also think about his future. Time will pass, the baby will grow up and become a schoolboy. His slowness can interfere with his studies, and his awkwardness and sluggishness in games will make him the subject of ridicule from his peers.
impressionable children
These children require special care, because their type of nervous system is conditionally called weak. These children are very sensitive to everything that happens around them, they are sensitive to the mood of others, and their own mood is unstable. The most subtle reasons can upset them and cause crying. If such a child is not disturbed by anything, he is friendly. He expresses joy with a smile or a quiet laugh, and being dissatisfied with something, he whimpers, trying to attract the attention of adults. These are delicate children, not demanding, but keenly experiencing the slightest insults. They tire faster than others, which is especially noticeable in the smallest. Their sleep is not deep, because for a good rest they need to create a calm environment, if possible, exclude noise.
Growing up, such children may feel uncomfortable in the company of their peers: either someone pushed him, or broke a shortbread pie, or took a mold. For other children, this may not matter: they pushed – he walked away, made another pie, took his mold, and our baby – the “weak” is not indifferent, he is upset and tries to retire. Such children react more sharply to everything new: they can be frightened by an unusual environment, unfamiliar adults, a large number of other children. Often, they are the ones who endure admission to a nursery or kindergarten with difficulty and pain. For this event, they need to be prepared especially carefully. The task of adults is to help such a child enter the children’s society.
Such a child should not be overprotected, as this will only pamper him, make him unbalanced, timid. Encouraging, encouraging with praise, one must help him overcome fear. Let him move more, fulfill the instructions of adults, turn to other children and adults with questions and requests on their instructions, and join in independence. The first successes inspire the baby, he becomes bolder and more determined.
The adaptation period is a difficult time for the baby. But at this time it is difficult not only for children, but also for their parents. Therefore, the joint work of parents and educators is very important. Telling educators about the interests, habits of their children, their state of health, their level of development, how the child sleeps, whether he likes to play, work, parents contribute to the development of open and trusting relationships with teachers, help the educator find an individual approach to the child.
It is in our common interests to ensure that the child copes with the difficulties of getting used to a new environment at the level of easy adaptation and in every possible way to prevent and prevent the manifestation of severe adaptation!
