13 Memorial Day activities for kids

The Memorial Day holiday often heralds the arrival of summer, but this year, take some time to teach kids about what this holiday actually celebrates: Remembering all the people who have given their lives in service to the U.S. Armed Forces. And a great, kid-friendly way to do just that is have a few Memorial Day kids crafts, videos and activities on hand.

Here are 13 fun and educational kids Memorial Day activities guaranteed to be a hit. And the best part? They’re all easy — and inexpensive — to boot!

1. Read all about it

So many of us forget why we actually mark Memorial Day on our calendars. If you need some help explaining it to kids, these three books talk about the holiday in clear language that kids will understand:

  • “Memorial Day Surprise” by Theresa Martin Golding – Ages 5-7
  • “Memorial Day” by Mir Tamim Ansary – Ages 6-8
  • “The Wall” by Eve Bunting – All ages

Or visit The History Channel’s website for more interesting facts and information.

2. Make “popsicles”

Popsicles out of popsicle sticks — genius! This America popsicle craft from Simply Sweet and Messy is one of the best preschool activities for Memorial Day. And definitely one that will go in the memory box.

3. Tie-dye a patriotic t-shirt

Image via Mom Endeavors

It’s the kids Memorial Day gift that keeps on giving! These patriotic tie dye shirts from Mom Endeavors aren’t just fun to make for Memorial Day, the kids will get use out of them all summer long. Win-win!

4. Have a (patriotic) picnic

Image via Pikniks on the Land/Instagram

Sure, most people head to barbecues on Memorial Day, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a small Memorial Day picnic in the days prior — a great place to talk about the true meaning of the holiday! And if you’re going to have a picnic, make sure to make it thematic, like this red, white and blue stunner from Pikniks on the Land.

5. Make an egg carton poppy wreath

Image via Kitchen Counter Chronicles

The red poppy flower is associated with Memorial Day. While some folks choose to wear a red poppy pin to honor those who have lost their lives, another great way to incorporate the flower is this egg carton poppy wreath from Kitchen Counter Chronicles.

6. Create a red, white and blue craft kit

Image via Little Love Box NY

Memorial Day for kids often means crafts. Lots of cute crafts. Why not let your little ones take the reins by throwing together a red, white and blue craft kit, like this one from Little Love Box NY? See what they create!

7. Serve up patriotic drinks

Image via Mandy Drinkie/Instagram

Who doesn’t love a festive drink? No one, that’s who. Consider making (non-alcoholic) red, white and blue drinks for Memorial Day, like this cutie from Mandy Drinkie.

8. Send a letter to a soldier overseas

Image via Coffee Cups and Crayons

As the folks at Coffee Cups and Crayons demonstrate, a thank-you letter or care package sent to a soldier stationed overseas is a wonderful way to show appreciation for the brave people who serve our country. If you don’t know anyone specifically stationed abroad, there are many nonprofit organizations dedicated to this effort, such as Operation USO Care Package, Any Soldier and A Million Thanks.

9. Make a patriotic star sun-catcher

Image via Crafts by Amanda

This simple star suncatcher from Crafts by Amanda is one of the sweetest Memorial day activities for preschoolers. You just need a few supplies and boom! Adorable kiddie art coming right up.

10. Serve a patriotic meal

Really, is there anything more appropriate than a patriotic meal? Especially one of French fries and ketchup? (Yes, we get the irony of the fries.) Whether you’re serving fries and ketchup or a fruit salad, arrange it in the shape of a flag and it’s sure to delight kids.

11. Visit a local cemetery or memorial

Many families visit cemeteries annually on Memorial Day to pay respect to loved ones who served their country. Most communities also have some sort of cemetery or memorial dedicated to honoring fallen members of our Armed Forces with special commemorations on this holiday. Even if you don’t have loved ones in these cemeteries, your kids can still honor these fallen service members by placing flowers or flags at headstones that don’t have any.

12. Say ‘Hi!’ to a vet

Today is a great day to give back to the people who have served this country. Consider visiting a local veterans hospital or pop by and say hi to a veteran who lives on your block or near by.

13. Check out this Memorial Day video

The creators of the Hey! Guess What YouTube channel have a great, straight-forward, five-minute video on Memorial Day for kids. It breaks down the holiday in easy-to-understand terms.

Scenario of a thematic event with children of senior preschool age “Day of Memory and Sorrow”

Songs about the war sound. The children are seated.

On the screen – a slide about the Day of Remembrance and Sorrow.

Host: Today is the Day of Remembrance and Sorrow. Every day on June 22 at exactly 4 am in our country, people light millions of candles and carry them to memorials. In Moscow, they are carried to the tomb of the Unknown Soldier, then to the memorial on Poklonnaya Hill. On this day, flags are flown at half mast at state institutions, all entertainment events are cancelled. Today, on the day of Remembrance and Sorrow, the whole country remembers the most terrible date in the history of our country – on this day, June 22, 1941 years old, the Great Patriotic War began.

Remember!

About those who will never come again –

In memory of the fallen, be worthy!

Forever worthy!

June 22, 1941. Fascist Germany has dealt a terrible blow to our country. This is a deadly avalanche of highly trained, disciplined German soldiers. They have already taken over Europe. nineteen0 divisions (5.5 million people, about 5 thousand aircraft, over 3 thousand tanks spewing fire and lead – all this moved towards us, towards your grandparents, who were young just like you and me.

Host:

In the first days of the war, in order to support people, composer Alexandrov and poet Lebedev-Kumach composed a heroic song “Get up, the country is huge.” Let’s listen to it.

Listening to the song “Get up, the country is huge” Hitler declared: “It is not enough for us to defeat the Russian army and capture Leningrad, Moscow and the Caucasus. We must wipe this country off the face of the earth and destroy its people.”

June 22, 1941 is a terrible date. The day when for millions of inhabitants of our vast country all plans for the future collapsed – vacations, exams, weddings. All life turned upside down. Everything drooped, went somewhere very far, into the past, before the ominous word “war”.

Our country did not expect an attack, because we have concluded a non-aggression pact with Germany. We were not ready for war. But already on June 22, death claimed the lives of people. Already on June 22, the ground was buzzing under the caterpillars of tanks, bursting with shells, making its way through automatic bursts. The count has begun – 1418 bloody days of the Great Patriotic War. nine0007

The whole country rose up to fight the Nazis. Everyone stood up who could hold weapons in their hands, who could defend their homeland. Yesterday’s schoolchildren besieged military registration and enlistment offices, asked to go to the front, adding a year or two to themselves. And they left not to return. Almost the entire school graduation of 1941 did not return from the front.

Music video “Children of War”

Educator: You know from films, books –

There was a war with the Nazis.

To cope with the Nazi yoke,

The whole country united. nine0007

1. All those who defended their Motherland,

Glorifies our people.

About the heroes who fell in battles,

Eternal memory lives on!

2. To those who stood and survived,

To those who were young and brave,

Who fought in severe battles,

Who sat at the desk,

we give our soul.

We compose verses for you,

We sing songs for you.

4. For the native country people. nine0007

They gave their lives.

We will never forget,

Fallen, in a valiant battle.

5. A fire is burning at the obelisk,

The birch trees are sad in silence,

And we bowed low – low

Here an unknown soldier sleeps.

Host:

Every year, on June 22 and May 9, people lay flowers at the graves of fallen soldiers.

Eternal Flame burns in every city and village. Eternal is the one that always burns, never goes out and reminds people of the terrible word “War” and that this should never happen again, because adults and children need peace on the whole planet. nine0007

Let’s sing a song about this, which is called: “Eternal Flame”

Song “Eternal Flame” (senior group)

Host: Today we again remember that war. But not in order to hate those who brought death and suffering to our land, but in order to remember all those who did everything so that we, who live now, could laugh and cry, rejoice and grieve, study, work – and just to live, rejoicing in the world around us.

Song “Spring” (senior group)

Narrator: We have no right to forget the horrors of this war, lest they happen again. We have no right to forget those soldiers who died so that we can live now. We have no right. We have to remember everything.

6. We will be brave, like grandfathers,

We will defend our native land,

And the bright sun of Victory

We will not give it to anyone.

7. Let there be no war ever.

Let calm cities sleep.

Let the sirens scream

Doesn’t sound over my head.

8. Let no one burst a shell,

No one scribbles a machine gun.

Let our forests announce

Only the voices of birds and children.

9. May there never be a war,

No more trouble will touch us!

And let the years pass peacefully.

Let there be no war ever!

Host: People! As long as hearts are beating, remember!

At what cost is happiness won – remember! nine0007

When you send your song into flight, remember!

Remember those who will never sing again!

Tell your children about them so that they remember them!

Tell the children of children about them so that they also remember!

Carry your dream through the years and fill it with life!

But for those who will never come again, I conjure – remember!

“Minute of silence”.
