Founded in 1966, Calvary Children’s Home is a home for children in the Metro Atlanta area that need to live apart from their families. We provide a safe, loving, Christian home for these children while providing them with a stable home life. We strive to give the children entrusted in our care the very best skills, education, and values so that they may become responsible, productive members of society. Attending church, local schools, and participating in after school and community activities provide a sense of normalcy and gives our children experience in the real world.

In Memory of Rev. Ben F. Turner, Jr.
9/16/1927 – 10/7/2006

In 1965, a tragic event occurred in the Smyrna, Georgia community when a husband and wife were killed in an automobile accident, leaving their six children without a home. Since it is extremely difficult for any family to take in six children at once, they were separated and placed with four different families within the community.

The late Reverend Ben F. Turner (1927 – 2006) was with the children as they were being separated and saw the deeply emotional impact it was having on each of them. They wanted to stay with each other! Reverend Turner realized the tremendous need for the family to stay together, especially after losing both parents . . . “If children can’t have the love and guidance of parents, they should at least be able to live together as brothers and sisters. If I could build a home large enough, I could keep all the children of one family together.” This was the catalyst for the creation of the Calvary Children’s Home in 1966.

The original Calvary Children’s Home was one building on one acre of land with room to house 10 to 15 children and house parents at any given time. Once Calvary began accepting children, local juvenile courts, pastors, and individuals in the area began requesting assistance housing other children in need. An additional wing was soon added to the home in order to accommodate more children.

In 1997, thanks to many years of blessings and support from the community, Calvary Children’s Home moved from Smyrna to Powder Springs, Georgia. The new thirteen-acre campus is named the Vaughn campus, in memory of the generosity of the late Mr. and Mrs. Vaughn.

The Vaughn Campus is located on a thirteen-acres in Powder Springs, Georgia, our facility can host 35 to 40 children at any given time. We also have house parents that live at the facility with their own families. Over the past five decades, we have housed well over 400 children.

The future of the Calvary Children’s Home will be, as it always has been, totally dependent on God as He cares for us through the hearts and hands of our friends. We are committed to providing the best possible home to these children but we cannot do the work alone. Your interest and support is also important because of the encouragement it provides. It demonstrates to our children that they really are important as our friends take such an interest in them. The impact of that message is one that will remain with them throughout their life.

“They brought children to Him so that He would touch them; but the disciples did not admit those who offered. When Jesus saw this, he was indignant and said to them, Let the little children come to Me, and do not hinder them, for of such is the Kingdom of God. Truly I say to you: whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it.” (Mark 10:13-15)

Jesus teaches us to bring children to Him. The Lord understood the value of the child, therefore he was indignant at the disciples who tried to protect Him from communication with them. The Kingdom of Heaven is not only for adults, who may seem to some more important than children. But everyone who comes to Jesus in faith is valuable to the Kingdom of God. Namely, such faith is often manifested in children.

Our task today is to help the child to meet Jesus, to help him grow in the knowledge of God, to help establish a personal relationship with Him, so that the child learns to apply the Word of God in his daily life, affirms himself in Christian values, boldly preaches the Gospel.

God repeatedly reminds people through His prophets: “ What we have heard and learned, and our fathers have told us, we will not hide from their children, proclaiming to the generation to come the glory of the Lord, and His power, and His wonders, which He did . .. so that He knew the coming generation, the children who would be born, and so that they proclaimed to their children in due time – to place their hope in God and not forget the works of God, and keep His commandments “(Ps.77: 3-5). Today’s children are the future of the church, tomorrow’s pastors, preachers, missionaries, ministers, so it is so important to devote your time and energy to passing on knowledge about God and your faith in Him to children.

Even in the time of Moses, God admonished his people to take care of the spiritual nourishment of children, using every opportunity and in every place: “And let these words that I command you today be in your heart and inspire them in your children and speak about them sitting in your house and walking on the road, and lying down and getting up” . Therefore, it is so important not to miss this short moment of childhood, when we can sow good seeds in the hearts of children. And of course, good seeds planted at this time on good soil will grow and bear good fruit in maturity.

The world is changing, the means of interaction between people are changing, culture is changing, new challenges and new questions are emerging. But Christ, through His word, can provide answers to them. Therefore, the task of the Higher School is to show children that God’s word is relevant and effective in solving all the problems of both adults and children, both in ancient times and today. And in order for children not only to hear, but also to understand what the Bible says, we must speak to children in a language they understand, using terms and words that are clear to them, as Christ did, teaching ordinary people on examples close and accessible to them. and illustrations from their lives.

It is also important to understand that raising a child, caring for his physical and spiritual well-being is, first of all, the business of parents and families. The business of the Sunday school, the church is to help parents in this responsible matter. Therefore, the Sunday school must actively interact and cooperate with parents.
