12 Easy Hula Hoop Games for Kids

There are many ways you can play with hula hoops with young children that will teach them skills and develop their muscles, coordination and other physical skills.

By using hula hoops, you can teach your kids some new gross motor movements they might not yet be familiar with, such as skipping or swinging a hoop around your waist.

Hula hoops can be used in many movement activities, at home or at school. Here are a few hula hoop games to try with your preschoolers and older kids.

1. Musical Hoops

This game is a variation of the game musical chairs.

Play music and get the kids to dance around. When the music stops, instead of running to sit on a chair, kids must find an empty hoop and sit cross-legged inside it.

On each round, remove one hoop and the person who doesn’t find a hoop is out of the round. For younger kids, it may be better not to remove hoops so every child finds a hoop on each round.

This game is good for learning about position in space and body awareness.

2. Skipping Race

Did you know you can actually skip with a hula hoop?

By turning the hoop over your head and then skipping into it, one leg at a time, you can create the same motion as you do with a skipping rope.

This can make a fun and challenging race, and teach a new motor skill. Do this one on the grass as there might be some falling involved as kids trip over their hoops while getting used to the movement.

3. Hula Hoop Toss

Teach kids to aim and throw by placing two hula hoops on the floor and tossing bean bags into them.

For younger children, place the hoops close by so it is easier to get the beanbags to land inside them. For older children, move the hoops further away.

Teach number recognition at the same time by making number cards with the numbers 1 to 5 on and placing each inside a hoop (number 1 closest to you, number 5 furthest away).

Allocate the number of points on the card each time you get the bean bag inside a hoop and tally up the points after each round.

Here are more fun bean bag activities for kids.

4. Play Netball or Basketball

Young preschoolers would enjoy tossing a netball or basketball into a hula hoop as a traditional netball hoop is much smaller and therefore too difficult for most young kids to use.

Fix a hula hoop to a pole or doorknob (or any other creative position you can think of) with cable ties. You could even suspend a hoop between two chairs to keep it low for younger preschoolers.

5. Find the Number

Teach kids the numbers by laying out 10 hula hoops in random positions in a room or outdoor area. Place a sheet of paper or card with a number from 1 to 10 in each hoop.

Let kids run around and move freely, then blow a whistle or clap your hands and call out a number from 1 to 10. The children must run to the hula hoop and stand inside it, taking care to try and fit everyone in the circle.

This works best if a small group of kids plays at a time (up to 5 kids), and is also suitable for playing with one child.

For younger kids, use the numbers 1 to 5 only and increase them with time, as kids learn to recognize the numbers.

6. Hula Hoop Contest

Why not try a traditional hula hooping contest by swinging hoops around your waist to see how long they will stay up without falling?

This may be a little challenging for young kids but is a great skill to learn and preschoolers will find it fun to try. Let them watch an adult who knows how to hula hoop so they can see the movement.

7. Obstacle Course

Hula hoops are great for adding to obstacle courses.

Kids can hop into them (with legs together or alternating), weave around them, crawl through them, run over them, or toss things into them.

Here are some simple obstacle course ideas for kids.

8. Hopscotch

A traditional game played for many years, hopscotch has a whole host of benefits and is a great game to teach kids. It can be varied to make it simpler for younger preschoolers.

As a variation, instead of drawing a hopscotch court, lay out hula hoops and hop into them instead.

Here’s how to play hopscotch.

9. Race Across the River

Build strength with this fun pretend game.

Lay out some hula hoops and pretend they are rocks on a river. Space them wide enough apart that kids have to jump from one hoop to another.

Challenge your kids to cross the river safely by only jumping on the rocks. If they land outside the hoop, they will fall into the river and be swept away by the current.

Time your kids and see how long they take to cross the river and repeat the rounds to see if kids can beat their times. Or, make it challenging by moving the hoops further and further apart on each round, challenging kids to jump further.

10. Hula Hoop Pass

In this fun game, get the family members, or a small group of children, to stand in a row and hold hands.

The objective is to move a hula hoop from one side of the chain of people to the other side, without unlinking your hands. Move it over across your arms, over your head, under your body, etc. , until it gets to the other side.

11. Spelunking

Pretend to be archaeologists going on a trip to explore caves.

Place chairs in two rows and use them to hold up several hula hoops, spaced close together. You could also use a wall for support on one side, and chairs on the other.

Lay large sheets over the hoops to create darkness and the feeling of being closed off.

Pretend to crawl through the caves, slowly squeezing your body through the tight tunnels of the cave. If you can, play this at home at night. Switch off the lights and give your child a torch to make it fun.

This game will teach kids about their position in space.

12. Free Play

Last but not least, don’t forget to let kids play freely with the hula hoops. Lay them out and invite children to use them in their play in any way they choose.

Kids will use the hoops to represent other things during symbolic play (like rocks they can stand on to cross the river safely), they might make up their own games with rules, or they might toss them into the air and catch them.

Free play is important for learning.

I hope you’ll enjoy trying these hula games with your preschoolers and older kids. Here are more fun games to play with kids.

5 Fun Games with Hula Hoops

Affiliate Disclosure: As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Growing up, I’m sure we all played with the hula hoop and creating fun hula hoop games was a weekend tradition. Hula hoops have stood the test of time because they’re affordable, easy to find, and involve many games to solo or with your friends.

Remember the “good old days” when you and you’re friends would swing your hips around to see who could keep it spinning the longest?

Did you know that’s not the only hula hoop game out there? In fact, this simple toy is used for tons of great games with hula hoops that you should try.

Whether for using hula hoops for team building, group activities, preschoolers, seniors, or even just to make playtime something different, then these games are here to help!

Table of Contents

Here are 5 Fun Games with Hula Hoops to get you started:

1. Thread the Hula!

If you’re looking to use a hula hoop for team building, this is the game for you!

Hula hoop team building activity

Watch this video on YouTube

Players will form a circle while holding hands with the hula hoop hanging on one of the player’s arms. They will start the game by passing the hula hoop around the circle without letting go of their hands.

They can achieve this by running the hoop down their arm, ducking their head in and then stepping through to pass it onto the next player.

Enjoy this hula hoop teambuilding activity with two or more competing teams to make it a hilarious competitive challenge where the first team to run the hoop through their entire circle wins.

2. Hula Hoop Rock Paper Scissors (aka Hula Hoop Hopscotch)

This is an excellent hula hoop game for preschoolers.  It’s also a fun way to play rock paper scissors!

Epic 4th grade hopscotch game – Hoop hop showdown

Watch this video on YouTube

Lay down all the hula hoops available no matter their size.  The idea is to create a long zig-zagging course.

Next, divide the players into two equal teams and arrange them at each end of the hula hoop course you just created.  When the game starts a player from each team will hop as fast as they can through the hula hoops to the other side.

When they meet the player from the other team they will play a game of paper rock scissors.  The player that wins will continue hopping as fast as they can to the opposing team’s side.

The player that loses must step off the course and run to the end of their team line.  The losing team will send a new player to meet the other team’s winner and challenge them again.

The game will continue until one team makes it all the way across the hula hoop course.  The longer the course the better!

You can make it challenging or add delays by adding special instructions at some of the hoops like swinging your hands wildly and counting to 10, clap 25 times, nod your head or sing a familiar tune.

3. Hula Hoop relay race

If you’re looking for competitive hula hoop games, look no further!

Hoops Relay – Prep II

Watch this video on YouTube

There are many games with hula hoops, but this is one of my favorites because it is team-based, competitive, and will wear our the players!  How do you set up and play the hula hoop relay?  Let’s begin:

First, you will need to divide your teams.   Four teams of 10 are recommended, but use what you have.

Each team will run their own course which will involve a series of 3 or 4 hula hoop challenges.  The video above shows three challenges, but you can get creative with your hula hoop relay course.

Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  1. A standing hula hoop obstacle (set of 6 hula hoop holders)
  2. A flat hula hoop where the player has to pick it up and move through the center of it
  3. A “roll the hula hoop 5-10 feet” section
  4. After rolling the hula hoop (above) throw it back to toss the hula hoop over a cone (if failed, roll again)

4. Hula Hoop Flip Ball

If you’re wanting physical education games using hula hoops, you will love this one.  It’s my personal favorite too!

Hula Flip Ball

Watch this video on YouTube

Games with hula hoops for couples or small teams aren’t hard to come by, but one as unique and challenging as this is.   The game is simple to organize.  All you need is one hula hoop per team of 2 and some cheap tennis balls.

Next, line the teams at a starting point.  Instruct each player that they have to roll the tennis ball into the hula hoop.  If it stops inside the hula hoop then flip the hula one time.

If the ball does not stop inside the hula, then the player who tossed it picks it up and tosses it back to their teammate.

This hula hoop flip game ends once a team reaches a preset finish line.  This game takes some skill and is great for adults or older teenagers.

5. Giant Hula Hoop Ring Toss

This is one of those games with hula hoops that all your friends will want to get in on!

Giant Ring Toss Game

Watch this video on YouTube

This game would require a larger playing area.  Someplace outside or in a large room will work best! The video above shows a giant hula hoop toss inflatable, but we recommend this affordable one on Amazon.

Once inflated, assign a throwing area where each player will stand.  They will have 3 hula hoops that range in size from small to large.  Now each player will have a turn to throw their hula hoops and will receive scores accordingly.

The player who has the most points after three rounds will win the game.

This game can also be played using orange traffic cones with various points assigned to them.

These are my personal favorite hula hoops for games:

Fun Hula Hoop Games for all Ages

Hula hoop games to get kids and adults moving

By

Dawn Miller

The hula hoop rotated into American hearts in 1958. It became an immediate hit with Americans young and old with around 25 million hula hoops selling in the toy’s first four months of existence. Wham-O cofounders Richard Knerr and Arthur “Spud” Melin (who patented it) set out to market the plastic hoop after learning about Australian children having fun with wooden hoops in gym classes. Hula hoops are considered a 1950s fad, but unlike coonskin caps, soda shops, and sock hops, hula hoops stepped out of the limelight but never really faded away.

Hula hoops are easy to find in toy and dollar stores. Kids still use the hip-swiveling circle toy in gym classes and for playing fun hula hoop games in their backyards. There’s a reason hula hoops have stood the test of time. They are fun and give the user a pretty good core workout. The budget-friendly hula hoop is also an innovative toy with a lot of other uses, making it a handy thing to have a few of in the garage, especially when you’re trying to get kids to power down. Here are 10 cool hula hoop games to get children (and adults) up and playing.

Fun hula hoop games

Playing with hula hoops is, of course, a blast, but swiveling those hips is a pretty good workout too. Give these hula hoop games a try when the kiddos are bored, have friends over, or are hosting a party. Hula hoop games are a perfect pick for a family fun night, too.

Swivel it

You don’t need to watch Elvis on YouTube to figure out how to use a hula hoop, but be forewarned, it isn’t as easy as it looks. Put on some music, grab some hula hoops, and see how many times you can keep it rotating around your waist. Adults can get into the act, too. Hula hoop workouts are actually a thing.

Hula hoop scotch

Think hopscotch without marking up the driveway or sidewalk with chalk. All you need are 12 hula hoops and the space to set them up in the traditional hopscotch format. Backyards, front lawns, and gym floors are perfect for hula hoop hopscotch.

Tag

Children of all ages love tag, but moms and dads never appreciate being home base. When a game of tag breaks out, set up two hula hoops to use as home bases. When a child is inside the hoop, he or she is on base and can’t be tagged.

Bean bag toss

Put down a couple of hula hoops and grab a few bean bags, and you have made a simple party game for younger kids. Children can take turns tossing the bean bags into the hula hoops. To make it more challenging, have the person tossing move farther back, or place targets like cones or water bottles for players to aim at inside the hula hoops.

Jump hoop

Hula hoops have been swiveled on arms and legs as well as hips. So you can certainly use it in place of a jump rope and do hula jumps. It’s a good idea to try hoop jumping on grass, just in case someone trips since it provides a softer landing. This is a good cardio exercise for moms and dads, too.

Goal

If your future Carli Lloyd or Sidney Crosby needs target practice for his or her next soccer or hockey game, tie a hula hoop to a soccer or hockey goal. It’s a simple and inexpensive way to help budding sports stars work on their aim and shot.

Hoop catch

Hoop Catch is also known as Up High. This game should always be played outside, and be sure there is enough space. The object is to toss the hula hoop in the air as high as you can and then catch it before it hits the ground. Always have kids take turns tossing the hula hoop in the air to avoid collisions.

Hoop rolling

This game has really stood the test of time. It dates all the way back to the ancient Greeks. All you need to play is a stick and a hula hoop. The object is to place a hula hoop upright and roll it along using a stick to see who can go the farthest. Kids can also use their hands. To challenge kids, set a start and an end line. Or develop a simple hoop rolling obstacle course. If the hoop falls, just pick it up and keep on going.

Pass the hoop

A perfect party game, Pass the Hoop is ideal for larger groups. Place everyone in a circle. All the participants hold hands. One hula hoop is placed over a player’s arm to get the game going. Then, the hula hoop must be passed around the circle without letting go of each other’s hands.

Obstacle course

Setting up a backyard obstacle course for a party or to keep the kids busy on an afternoon after school is out is an easy and fun way to get kids active. Hula hoops can be easily set up for kids to crawl, jump, or run through. Add in some pool noodles, and you will have a cool obstacle course the kiddos will enjoy.

Hula hoops made a big splash back in the late ’50s, but they proved to have staying power. Wham-O may have marketed the first plastic hula hoop in 1958, but the idea dates back centuries. There are so many fun ways to use a hula hoop — so get playing!

Hoola Hoop Games For Kids

By Simon Books

Share Tweet Share Share Share Email

Hoola hoops aren’t just for spinning. There are several games to incorporate the classic toy; here are 10.

For years, children have been playing with hula hoops at home, school, or anywhere they find space to have fun. It’s a toy that kids who are maybe 6 years old and up would enjoy. Although one would assume that hula hoops should be outdated owing to the invention of modern toys, the truth is that they are still very relevant, like kids playing with chalk, and it’s entertaining even today. One of the best things about them is that many kids enjoy them no matter their age and regardless of kids’ ability to use one. Hula hoops are so simple to use that they don’t even need a manual or a power source to get started.

Most kids can twirl a hula hoop around their waist, neck, arm, or leg. Others take this a notch higher and play a hula hoop marathon, where the kids compete to see who can twirl the hoop the longest without losing control. However, did you know there are other fun games you can play with the hula hoop and have so much fun at it?

Here are some suggestions you should definitely implement to have even more fun with the kids:

10/10 Hula Hoop Basketball

Hula hoops can be used as a good alternative for a basketball rim. Tie the hoop to a tree and have the kids throw the ball into the hoop. For smaller kids, you can use a longer rope or a shorter tree so that they have fun too.

9/10 Skipping

If you want to introduce your child to skipping or jumping rope, you can start off with hula hoops. This is because they are more stable and easier to manage. Hula hoops will also teach the child how to jump, balance, and coordinate while having fun. They can smoothly switch from the hoops to rope once they’ve gotten used to it.

8/10 Obstacle Course

You can bury several hula hoops on their sides in the ground to create your obstacle course. Ask the kids to tunnel through, run laps around, or jump over them. Additionally, you can place them on the ground and make up some fun instructions for jumping in and out, such as spinning in and out or hopping on one leg.

7/10 Dolphin Island Tag

Photo by Gene Gallin Unsplash

This is a fun game for kids to play. Begin by scattering hula hoops across the field. These will be used to create islands or “secure zones.” Then decide on a leader. The leader will then yell, “It’s time to swim,” and all of the children will run to avoid being captured. The hoola hoops will be their “base,” as we called it in the game of tag.

6/10 Bean Bag Or Ring Toss

Put the hula hoops apart depending on the age of the children then give every child one or two bean bags. Then ask them to try to put the bag into their opponent’s hoop while trying to guard their own. They can use any part of their body to defend their hoop.

A ring toss is pretty easy, just choose a target and have the kids toss the hoop over it.

This is a great game to keep the kids entertained at a picnic or a birthday party. Make a line or a circle with everybody holding hands then place the hula hoop in one of the players’ hands to begin the game. After that, the hoop must be passed to the last player without letting go of their hands.

4/10 Rolling Hoop Catch

This is a fun game to play for both older and younger children. Demonstrate the process of rolling the hoop along the ground. Then have them try their best to catch the hula hoop before it rolls and lies flat on the ground.

3/10 Hula Hoop Pass

In this game, you will need to create pairs then have the kids roll the hoops to one another. You can make it slightly challenging by rolling out the hula hoops at the same time.

2/10 Rock, Paper, Scissors, Hoop

Divide the teams into two groups and set out 20 Hula Hoops in a straight line. When the whistle blows, one player from each team must leap two-footed into the hoops and make their way down the line. The players then play rock, paper, scissors when they meet at the center. Whoever loses the game has to go back to their original squad.

1/10 Up, Down, Under, Over

Photo by Karolina Grabowska from Pexels

If you are having a group of kids over to your house this game will keep them entertained. Have four or five kids stand inside a wide hoop, which they should keep up at waist level without using their hands. Then challenge them to move the hoop up and down their necks or ankles with no hands.

Hula Hoop Games for Kids

Whether you are a parent, OT, PT, PE teacher, or classroom teacher, hula hoop games are engaging and fun to get kids moving! Here are several hula hoop activities that you can play with your kids. You will need hula hoops. If you do not have hula hoops you could put painter’s tape on the ground in a circle shape for some of the games.

Where you can play the games will vary. Some are great hula hoop games for PE others are hula hoop activities for preschoolers. It really depends on the children. You can modify the games as well based on the children’s skill levels and ages.

Don’t forget that hula hoops can also be used as a visual support for personal space boundaries. They are great tangible items to make personal space more concrete for children. They can represent their personal space bubble.

Hula Hoop Activities for Preschoolers

Let’s start with the little ones or easiest activities.

  • Simply place hula hoops on the floor and the kids can jump in and out of the hoops.
  • Turn on music and have the children dance around the room. When the music stops they have to run to a hula hoop and freeze.
  • Give each child a hula hoop. They have to move around the room holding their hula hoop around their waist and they are NOT allowed to bump into anyone. This is a great game to practice personal space and body awareness.

Hula Hoop Obstacle Course

This is a great game for indoor recess. Balance a few hula hoops across two desks. Place a few on the floor. Put a chair at the end of the course. The students can climb under the hula hoops on the desks, jump into the circles on the floor, sit in the chair, turn around and repeat the course back to start. How quickly can they complete the obstacle course?

Another option is to divide the group into a few teams.   Give each team one hula hoop.  Place a few chairs, cones or obstacles in a line.  On go, the first player on each team tries to roll the hula hoop around the chairs or cones back to the starting line.  Then the next player goes until each player has gone.  First team to complete the course is the winner.

Target Hula Hoop or Hula Hoop Ring Toss

Place a few classroom chairs or plastic cones about 5 feet from a starting line. The kids can practice trying to throw the hula hoops around the chair or cone. If you do not have chairs or cones, you can just put a book or bean bag on the floor and see if they can get the hoop around that object.

Hula Hoop Rock Paper Scissors

This is a twist on the classic game. There are many different ways to play this depending upon how many students you have or how many hoops you have. These directions are for a group of students with two hula hoops.

Place the two hula hoops about 10-20 feet from the starting line. Separate the group into two teams. On GO, the first players run to the hoops. They each stand in one hoop and meet each other. Play a round of Rock -Paper – Scissors with their hands. Whoever wins, earns a point for their team. They run back to start. The next players run to the hoops. The first team to 10 points wins the game!

Hula Hoop Games for PE

Circle Hoop – the group of children should stand in a circle all holding hands.  Have one pair of children unclasp hands and place a hoop on one child’s arm.  They should all hold hands again.  The goal is to move the hula hoop around the entire circle never breaking the chain of hands.  Children will have to bend over, squat down and stand on one leg to get the hoop over the head to pass the hoop to the next child.  This is a great activity to encourage balance practice and motor planning.

Through the Hoop – Break up the group into several small teams (about 3 children in each group).  Give each group one hula hoop.  Establish a starting line and another line about 10-20 feet away.   The first person in each group runs to the line that is 10-20 feet away and holds the hoop several inches off the ground.  Then the next person runs down, climbs through the hoop and back to the starting line.  The third person runs down, climbs through the hoop and back to the starting line.  The first person climbs through the hoop while holding it and runs back to start.  The first team with all three players through the hoop is the winner.

Hula Hoop Tic Tac Toe

There are plenty of hula hoop activities on You Tube but this game has gone viral there! Simply lay out 9 hula hoops on the floor in a 3 x 3 pattern – just like a tic tac toe board. Divide into two teams. Give each team different colored bean bags. On GO player one runs down and put their colored bean bag in a hoop and runs back. Player two goes and runs down with their color to mark their hoop. The first team to get three bean bags of their color in a row wins!

Hula Hoop Games – Jumping Patterns

If you have a lot of hoops, simply lay them out on the floor for the children to jump from one end of the room to another. Maybe create a hopscotch pattern or sideways jumping. Have the kids go through the course and change it up for the next group. The options are endless but you do need a lot of hoops.

Musical Games

This is one of my all time favorites. Scatter the hula hoops around the room. Inside each hoop place an exercise card or activity. Turn on the music and everyone dances around the room. When the music stops they must run to the closest hula hoop and perform that exercise. Turn back on the music and start again!

Games to Play with One Hula Hoop

If you have only ONE hula hoop, you still have options. Of course, there is the obvious – practice hula hooping around your waist. But here are a few suggestions that are not as obvious.

Hang the hoop from a tree to create a target hula hoop. Throw different balls through the hoop. Can you swing the hoop back and forth and still toss a ball through a moving target? Play catch with each other but you have to throw the ball through the hanging hoop each time.

Here is another hula hoop game for two players. Place the hula hoop on the floor in between the both of you. Player one creates a pattern such as step into the hoop and step out. Player two has to copy that pattern and add another one. For example – step into the hoop and step out, hop in on one foot. Player one now has to repeat both of those actions and add a third. Keep playing until you can not remember the pattern anymore.

This is more of a challenge than a game but still fun! Use your hula hoop like a jump rope. Can you hold it, bring it over your head and jump through it?

Gross Motor Activity {Hula Hoop Games} ~ Learn Play Imagine

I am always on the look out for inexpensive tools to incorporate more gross motor activity into our daily routine.  One of the most simple and versatile toys you can buy is a hula hoop.  I recently bought four at Target, one for each of my boys.  Only my oldest, JZ (6) is able to use the hula hoop for its intended purpose, but there are countless other gross motor skills to be gained with a hula hoop!  Here are several of our favorite hula hoop games, suitable for toddlers on up.

This post contains affiliate links. Here is my full disclosure policy.

Supplies:

  • hula hoops
  • stepping domes

1.  The Hula Hop

Line up every hula hoop you own, and hop into the center of each one.

Hopping with two feet together is a gross motor skill most children learn around the age of three.  It is an important skill, because it helps children have control over their body movements.  By setting up intentional gross motor activities children are able to control their movements and have control of their own personal space.

With younger children I like to encourage hopping with both feet together without any obstacles in place.

For older children, the hula hoops give a goal and focus for their hopping, encouraging even more body control.  Can you tell that this is a favorite of J-Bug’s?  (4)

JZ gave himself the extra challenge of hopping into every other hula hoop.

For a child who has mastered hopping, the next gross motor activity I suggest is hopping on one foot.  This skill requires even more control and balance.  After my boys hopped across the hula hoops on one foot I had them go back and hop on the other foot.  If your child isn’t ready to hop on one foot, you can introduce the skill by encouraging him to stand still on one foot at a time.

The next challenge is hopping sideways.  Be sure to encourage children to hop both directions, to equally strengthen their muscles.

2.  The Hula Catch

JZ and I love to toss a hula hoop into the air as high as we can and catch it.  The goal is to always catch it, so this takes control while throwing the hula hoop into the air.  The impulse of a child is to send the hula hoop into the air as high as possible, but the challenge of catching the hula hoop gives direction and focus to the throw, make it more intentional.

3.  The Hula Race

We race our hula hoops in two different ways.  The first race is a competition.  We each roll a hula hoop as far as we can.  Whoever rolls the hula hoop farther wins.  For older children you could enforce boundaries and interference if one of the hula hoops hits the other, but we keep it as a simple race for now.

The other way we race is my favorite.  We roll our hula hoops and try to outrun them.  The objective is to run past the hula hoop while it is still in motion.

4.  The Hula Toss

For this game I set out markers for the boys to toss the hula hoops onto.  The goal is to ring the hoop around one of the markers.  I used domes.  You could also use cones, milk jugs, water bottles, toys, or anything that stands up.

For an added gross motor challenge, and to practice math facts, we gave each color dome a point value.

5.  The Hula Ring

Tank and Peanut (23 months) naturally want to participate in all of our games.  A simple way to include toddlers in gross motor activities with hula hoops is by holding up a hoop for them to walk through.  The added bonus is watching the sibling bonding gone on during the game.

6.  The Hula Spin

In addition to spinning a hula hoop around our hips, we try to spin one around our neck, arms, and legs.

7.  The Hula Walk

Another favorite way of mine to include toddlers in the hula hoop games is by simply walking around a hula hoop.  The easiest way to get a toddler involved is by modeling the action, so I put my camera down and started walking around the hula hoop.

J-Bug wanted us to walk around two hoops.

Then he added a third hoop.

Peanut finally decided to join in the hula hoop fun.

A modification on the hula walk for older children is to have them keep one foot inside of the hoop at all times whiles walking around the outside of the hoop with the other foot.

8.  The Hula Step

Another gross motor skill that takes focus and control is stepping on a flat hula hoop and catching it as it flies upward.

There are eight of our favorite ways to work on gross motor skills with hula hoops.

  • Game with a stick and hoops

A hoop is one of the available types of sports equipment, which is always in any school or kindergarten. Therefore, it is actively used for outdoor games – not only in physical education classes, but also at festive evenings and competitions. Yes, and at home it is not so rare. So, it can entertain the gathered company of children. After all, playing with a hoop in the fresh air is possible almost until the very winter (and even in winter you can find options).

Benefits of the hoop

Various outdoor games and hula hoop exercises are undoubtedly useful.

  1. Firstly, this is movement, without which the correct development of a child is unthinkable: movement trains muscles, ligaments, heart, improves blood circulation and oxygenation of the body.
  2. Secondly, the spirit of competition.
  3. Thirdly, if they play in the yard, it is also fresh air. So, additional oxygen and strengthening of immunity.

In addition, activities with a plastic or metal ring train or help develop skills and qualities important for children:

  • speed;
  • endurance;
  • dexterity;
  • flexibility;
  • force;
  • sense of balance;
  • sense of space;
  • discipline;
  • mutual assistance;
  • team spirit;
  • persistence;
  • feeling of rivalry;
  • desire to win.

Exercises and games for toddlers 3-4 years old

For children of this age, the manipulation of the object is quite simple. But you can still pick up classes with rings. For example, these:

  • Chicks

Toddlers are divided into several small groups (4-6 people). Each group sits in its own “nest” (hula hoop). At the command of an adult: “Come on, fly, chicks!” – the children run around. On command: “Let’s fly home!” Everyone must return to their nests. Repeat several times.

  • Mousetrap

An adult pretends to be a cat. He has in his hands a “mousetrap” from a hoop. Mouse babies should scatter around, and the leading cat catches them with a mousetrap hoop. Who gets caught last?

  • Ice floe crossing

Here the hula hoop will be an ice floe. The kids are divided into 2 teams, built in the back of the head. Go through the stage one by one. The task is to stand with your feet in a ring lying on the floor, and then, pushing it with your socks, get to the intended border, pick it up and return to the team. Then the next participant moves on.

Preschoolers 4-5 years old

The tasks get a little more difficult. In addition, they can be combined into fun relay races, hold competitions for the most dexterous and fastest team (of course, with sweet prizes for all participants). For example:

2 teams also play. Participants take turns placing the hula hoop in front of them, making a pass along its circumference, placing their feet sideways. After that, the task becomes more difficult: you need to go in a circle, putting your legs straight (like on a tightrope).

  • Snakes

Competitors need to climb through the ring, holding it in front of them with one hand, and then repeat on the other side and pass it to the next player on the team. Those who drop the hula hoop do it all over again.

  • Propellers

Place the ring vertically on the floor, holding it with your hand. Then spin it around its axis, and when it starts to stop, catch it before it falls. Who will scroll longer? Who will drop first?

If things are very easy for children, make it harder. For example, in the “cliff” you can walk on your toes, on your heels; in the “snake” – with the last movement, jump through the circle, as if through a rope; spinning the “propeller”, make a certain number of claps or jumps until the hula hoop falls, and then catch it.

Games for children 5–6 years old

By this age, children become more dexterous, their coordination improves, which allows them to offer them even more complex manipulations with rings: for example, jump over them, like on a rope, to the count. Or these games:

Herons

Hula hoops are laid out in front of the team members in a zigzag pattern. Each player must jump from one circle to another on one foot, changing position (first straight, into the next ring – sideways, then – back, and so on until the end of the path. Whoever jumps on the circle itself or behind it, leaves. They play until

The mobile game “Get in the hoop”

The mobile game “Get in the hoop” has many varieties. But the essence is the same: to throw a certain projectile (ball, bag of sand, even a snowball in the winter on the street ) to the target (hula hoop) Options:

  • The hoop is suspended vertically at the level of the players’ eyes, at some distance from them. Their task is to take turns throwing their shells at him. The one who hits the most number of times wins.
  • Participants are divided into 2 teams and lined up in a circle (through one: a player from the first team, from the second, etc.). A hoop is placed in the center of the circle. Members of one team, on a signal, throw bags at the target. Count the number of hits. Then the other team throws.
  • Teams line up. A ring is hung in front of each. On command, they throw the balls at once into their rings. The smartest win.

Game with a stick and hoops

There are also several variants of team games with a stick and hoops. For example:

  • The task of the players is to roll their hula hoops vertically to the set border, pushing them with a stick (a long wooden or plastic skewer), and then return to their team with sticks and hoops in their hands.
  • Teams are divided into pairs. The players of each pair must take turns pushing the hoop with a stick to each other. You also need to catch it on a stick so that it does not fall. The task is not to drop the hoop and ride it faster than the rivals. Then the next couples come out.
  • A player from each team tosses the hoop up and then catches it with a stick. Whoever misses is out. Play to the winner.

There are a great many varieties of games and exercises using hoops. They are simple, accessible, but at the same time they bring children not only positive emotions, but also tangible benefits.

20 Team Building Games for Every Taste

“None of us is smarter than all of us together” –

Ken Blanchard, American management expert and author.

A friendly, cohesive and efficient team is the hallmark of a successful and constantly evolving business. An experienced leader knows that without a good rest, one should not expect a good job.

Contrary to popular belief, team building games are not only fun or even a waste of time. They contribute to the improvement of the company’s performance, increase the productivity and level of employee satisfaction from work, and broaden the horizons of team members.

Also, team building games quickly increase the level of mutual understanding among employees, which creates a favorable working environment. In addition, team entertainment helps to reveal the leadership qualities of company employees, as well as to discern their (often hidden) talents.

It is especially important to pay attention to team building games at a difficult time when many people work from home. Remote employees feel more isolated than ever from the team. This, according to Gallup (analysis and consulting company), can reduce productivity by up to 21%.

In this article, we have collected 20 team building games that will support the morale of the company’s employees, will not let you get bored and drown in everyday worries and problems.

Hoop exercises for children

Sport is a healthy and vivid perception of life. And acquaintance with him should take place in childhood. Elementary training for a child can be organized in a city apartment. This article details various hoop exercises for children at home, the benefits of classes and recommendations for parents.

What is a hula hoop and what is its use

A hula hoop is an object that is rotated around the body without the help of hands. The name comes from two words “hula” – a Polynesian folk dance and “hoop” – a hoop.

Its history goes back to ancient times. In Egypt, dry vines were woven into a circle, in Australia – a bamboo stalk.

In Russia, already plastic, it appeared in the early sixties and immediately became popular among girls.

Hoop training is beneficial for both adults and children. A special set of movements with it affects a large group of abdominal and back muscles, relieves stress from the spine. This helps to equalize the heart rate.

In addition, it is the most affordable and harmless home exercise machine. Parents can safely leave their child alone without fear of injury.

Types

There are several types of this sports equipment:

1. Plain, made of plastic or aluminum, hollow inside. Such gymnastic rings can be of different sizes. For kids, you need to select plastic ones with a diameter of not more than 80 centimeters. They are light, freely held in a child’s hand or at the waist, they can be tossed.

2. Collapsible – folds in half or quarter as opposed to normal for easy transport.

3. Weighted – aluminum or steel with a diameter of 95 centimeters is recommended for teenagers, for women who want to model a figure.

4. Massage. Inside, soft balls are mounted along the entire diameter, which rotate when the hula hoop moves. Such a sports simulator, in addition to a general health effect, produces a light massage of the internal organs. The package may include a counter of revolutions and calories burned.

It is recommended to choose sports equipment in bright colors – this will make training not only useful, but also beautiful.

At what age can you study

There are no age restrictions for classes. Kids get acquainted with this gymnastic attribute from one and a half to two years.

In the future, the loads only become more difficult, and the intensity of training increases.

Rules for handling

There are no special skills in practicing with this physical training device. It is worth trying once and forming a habit with further training.

Starting position for training – legs slightly apart, body straight, arms spread apart and bent at the elbows.

The sports ring should be leaned against the back and pushed in any direction. Release your hands.

Continue rotation with a small amplitude of the waist. Buttocks and chest are motionless. If unsuccessful, try again.

Preferably exercise on an empty stomach.

Simple exercises

In addition to rotational exercises, you can do the following set of exercises with a hoop.

  1. Forward bends. The hula hoop must be placed on the floor in front of you, the body is directed forward, the legs are shoulder-width apart, the arms are slightly bent at the elbows. Do slopes with a deflection in the back 10-15 times.
  2. Turns to the side. The starting position is the same. You should roll the object in front of you, turning the body. Repeat 10-15 times.
  3. Side bends. It is necessary to hold the ring above your head and tilt to the right and left 10 times.
  4. Jumping, similar to jumping rope.

It is very important to accustom girls and boys to such a routine, but not all parents attach due importance to this. Someone does not understand the importance, others do not have enough time.

Breathing exercises

It is advisable to perform breathing exercises with a hoop before and after the main health-improving activities.

  1. While inhaling, you should gently lift the ring up with both hands, rise on your toes, hold, then lower yourself while exhaling. At the same time, stretch the spine as much as possible.
  2. Do squats according to the method of the first exercise.
  3. Press the projectile against the back. Perform turns, inhaling on effort, and exhaling on returning to the starting position.

Play equipment

Lessons with the baby should be carried out in the form of a game. Moreover, while having fun, girls and boys learn:

  • develop basic motor qualities – strength, speed, dexterity, endurance;
  • navigate in space;
  • form moral and volitional skills – endurance, perseverance, mutual assistance, discipline;
  • strive to complete the task not only correctly, but beautifully and easily;
  • develop a reaction.

Recommended games

Hoop games for children can be single, pair and group games. Classes can be held both indoors and outdoors, combined with a walk.

Who can hula hoop further. If only one projectile is available, execute in turn.

Children really like it when an adult holds a play object, and a baby jumps through it.

Complicate the previous pastime by doing everything in motion.

Another game is to throw a ball at a horizontal or vertical gym equipment.

Trying to keep the hula hoop around the waist by dancing or making funny moves.

Tunnel is a game in which many people can participate at once. Several gymnastic rings are placed on the ground. The players hold them with their hands. The other members of the team run one by one into the formed arch, take the place of the last member and take turns replacing each other.

This game can be varied by rolling a ball along the corridor.

Juggler . The participants of the relay line up in two rows at arm’s length from each other. The ring is tossed and passed to the next player. His task is to catch in order to let him go further along the row. The one who dropped or failed to accurately complete the task is out.

Socket . Sports attribute lies on the floor. All participants in the game stand in a circle – they are birds in a nest. The host gives the command: “Fly!”. The kids start running around the playground. A new signal arrives: “Cat!”.

Each player tries to get back into the circle. The cat catches the birds. The most sluggish leave the playing field.

Taxi driver . The kid is inside the hoop and holds onto it with his hands. He’s a driver. A taxi drives up to people and offers to give a ride to someone where they need. The passenger joins the driver. The taxi driver sends it to its destination and returns for the next one.

Acrobat . The players are divided into groups. They take a game item and pass it to each other, gradually increasing the pace. The winner is the team that can not drop the physical attribute for the longest time. It is very good to diversify this competition by turning on fervent music.

Contraindications

There are no age restrictions for hula hoop classes. It is more correct to start introducing children to the specified sports device at preschool age. During this period, physical development requires increased attention.

However, there are certain contraindications:

  • diseases of the internal organs, in particular the intestines and kidneys;
  • problems with the spine;
  • skin disorders, rash, itching;
  • injuries, fractures, hernias.

If there is at least one of the contraindications, it is recommended to seek the advice of a specialist.

Pros and cons

Any kind of physical training increases the heart rate. Increases oxygen consumption by cells. There is a normalization of blood flow and strengthening of the heart muscle.

In addition, the back is straightened, which helps to combat stoop. Metabolism, bowel function are normalized, stretching, flexibility are improved, the vestibular apparatus is trained.

For overweight children, exercises with a hoop will help to model the figure and strengthen the muscular corset.

However, there are also disadvantages.

When working with a weighted ring, hematomas may occur on the skin of the abdomen and injure internal organs. There are cases of asymmetry of the muscular corset.

How to choose a hoop and where to train

First of all, you should decide on the ultimate goal of training, fitness level and height. Exercises can be carried out in the apartment, in the yard, as well as on the territory of specialized sports facilities.

When it comes to your child’s health, remember that the gymnastic ring is the ideal sports equipment to involve your child in the world of sports.

Classes help organize the daily routine, develop the habit of being outdoors more and more.

At least once a year, we face the question: “How to celebrate a birthday?”. And it doesn’t matter if it’s your own holiday, or you want to surprise a friend, but the solution to this problem can turn into a real one …

A hoop or hula hoop is not only a children’s toy, but also a real sports equipment. Our article will tell you about massage hoops and hula hoops for weight loss, as well as exercises and games with them.

Hula Hoop Trainer and Toy

Hawaiian girls performing the graceful hula dance with bamboo stalk hoops were far from the first to spin them around their waists. Fossilized hoops have been found during excavations of tombs in Egypt. It is known about the distant ancestors of hula hoops, which in some regions of the ancient world were made from vines. The plastic waistband was invented in 1957. The principle of its creation was based on the idea of bamboo hoops common in Australia, and the well-known hula hoop got its name precisely in honor of the Polynesian dance “hula” (“hoop” in English means “hoop”). From 1958 years, when the first plastic hoops were put on sale, and to this day they continue to improve, and their popularity does not wane. Now we will JUST talk about hula hoops – about their types, as well as about exercises and games with hoops.

Slimming hoops

The simplest hula hoops or hula hoops are made of iron or polyethylene, they are quite light due to the fact that they are hollow inside. They can be folded several times, while in terms of their characteristics, such hoops are not inferior to ordinary hoops, but are more convenient for storage at home and transportation. The disadvantage of hollow, including folding, hoops is that they are too light and cannot be used as massage ones, but are more suitable for gymnastic exercises.

The now popular models of hula hoops for weight loss are improved and provide a better study of the muscles of the waist and hips, mainly due to weighting and the presence of massage elements.

Weighted hoops are available in weights from 0.5 to 2.9 kg. It takes more effort to twist them, which burns more calories and more actively trains the waist and hips. They also have a massage effect.

In massage hoops , special elements are placed on the inside – rubber or plastic balls, which enhance the massage effect during exercise.

Slimming hoop with massaging elements

Massage elements in the so-called magnetic hoops have built-in magnets, due to which, when the hula hoop is twisted in the air stream, tiny particles are formed – anions, which are negatively charged oxygen ions, the benefit of which lies in the ability to purify the air by destroying microbes and dust particles. Thus, training has a double benefit – and calories go away, and ionized air acts on the areas being worked out.

Universal Gymflextor hoop

Universal hoop-simulator Gymflextor (zhimflextor) is not just a hula hoop, but a whole complex of simulators for training various muscle groups. Thanks to the elastic material of which this hoop is made (reinforced rubber of high strength), it can take the form of various simulators and be used not only for spinning at the waist. It is noteworthy that each simulator has its own degree of load, and the shock load of the gymflextor is no more than that of an ordinary hoop, weighing just over a kilogram.

Most modern hula hoop models for weight loss are collapsible – they consist of several arc-shaped sections, some of them fold rather than fold due to their flexibility. Some hoops can even be equipped with a calorie counter.

A little about training with hula hoops for weight loss

All that is needed for training with a hula hoop for weight loss is enough space so that when the hoop rotates, it does not touch the surrounding objects. The recommended time for classes is from 10 to 20 minutes a day, while you can listen to your favorite music or watch interesting programs on TV. In a word, not training, but sheer pleasure!

Among the benefits of practicing with a hoop are:

  • positive effects on the heart and respiratory system;
  • improvement of the skin condition in the affected area (waist, abdomen, hips), including reduction of cellulite;
  • training of the vestibular apparatus;
  • figure modeling;
  • normalization of bowel function.

A small disadvantage of all modern weighted and massage hula hoops for weight loss is that during the first workouts they can leave a lot of bruises on your body, so it is better to perform exercises in tight clothes.

Games and entertainment with a hoop for children

Children are very fond of playing with hoops

Looking at a mother exercising with a hoop for weight loss, children are also fond of this activity. But even if the kids still can’t twist the hula hoop around the waist, they can gladly try to just roll it, preventing it from falling to the floor and helping themselves with a stick or a wooden spoon with a long handle. And if you show the kids a trick with a hoop returning back, they will probably try to repeat it themselves.

For a company of children, you can offer the following game: everyone stands in a circle and holds hands, while the hula hoop is placed on the bent elbow of one of the participants in the game. A child standing next to the owner of the hoop must climb through it without opening hands with a neighbor. And so on in a circle. During the game, there will definitely be many funny moments that the guys will remember for a long time.

And if you get several multi-colored hula hoops of small diameter, then you can arrange a hopscotch game for children in nature even in a place where there is no asphalt – in the country house or in the park. At the same time, parents will remember their childhood and show the kids what a fun and provocative game it is. Just do not forget to allow the smallest to do several jumps inside one hoop. When the child learns to twist the hula hoop, then such multi-colored hoops will be useful for improving skills – rotating several around the waist at once.

Now JUST buy a hula hoop and enjoy sports and play activities with the whole family!

Questions and answers

Question. Are there any contraindications for hula hoop training?
Reply. There are, of course, contraindications for hula hoop exercises, as for any other training. Be sure to consult a doctor if you suffer from diseases of the intestines and kidneys (for example, urolithiasis), the spine (intervertebral hernia), and also have problems in gynecology. A contraindication to hula hoop exercises is pregnancy, injuries to those areas that are affected during training. Do not use the hoop for 6 months after caesarean section and a few weeks after childbirth, as well as for the elderly. Also, with caution, hula hoop exercises should be performed during critical days. If during the training you feel discomfort or pain, you should stop the session so as not to harm your health.

Question. How often and how long should I use the waist hoop to lose weight?
Answer. Of course, hoop training is ideal for shaping the waist, but fat deposits are not reduced as quickly as we would like. As a result of 2-3 weeks of daily 5-10 minute hula hoop workouts, the waist and hips can decrease in volume by only 1 centimeter. It is recommended to start exercises with a waist hoop from 1-2 minutes, gradually increasing their duration to 20 minutes. And if you exercise regularly, and even follow a diet, then the results will not be long in coming.

Spinning the hoop… doesn’t that remind you of your childhood? The times when friends or girlfriends competed to see who could spin the hoop the longest. And yet, do you know that people began to rotate the hoop back in ancient Greece – this is how the athletes of those days trained in order to maintain beautiful and correct forms. After that, the gymnastic hoop (eng. hula hoop hoop) was used as an element of circus and dance. To this day, they can be rotated around the waist, arms, neck, and legs to perform acrobatics. However, the rotation of the hoop is the most useful element of athletics, which allows you to reduce the waist, promotes blood circulation. The spinning hoop is primitive, but its usefulness is especially important.
