For four years, Sophie has been my go-to person to care for my cat when I go out of town. She was dependable, but also trustworthy in my home! I loved that she would video call with my cat or send photos of what they were doing. As a pet owner, it was so reassuring to find someone that I couldtrust to take care of my cat in my home so that it didn’t have to be boarded. (stressful!) Sophie genuinely seemed to enjoy the time with her. I highly recommend her!…

I began walking dogs as a volunteer at a local animal shelter in 2016. I loved it so much I decided to make this my career. I started my business in 2018.
I see a dog and I grin ear-to-ear.
My clients haveranged from a Chihuahua mix to a French Mastiff mix.
I have solo and group walks, the largest group walks are three to four clients at one time.
If I have group walks during a week and if time allows, I like to give each pup solo walks so we can have a better trusting connection.
The areas I walk are Harlem and the Upper Westside.
Each client as well as their home, I treat with respect.
Your first walk is free!
During this crisis I will wear gloves and masks. Gloves will be changed after walking every client and plenty of hand sanitizing will be done.
I know it takes great trust in the person you hire to walk and or to pet sit your dog. That is why I send Daily Reports on all walks, pictures are included.
Thank you for considering me as your dog walker!…

How to care for a dog at home?

29.10.2019

When you first get a puppy, there is a lot of information to take into account. However, taking the time to understand your pet’s needs from the start will ensure your dog’s physical and emotional health throughout his life.

There are a number of factors that affect the health and well-being of your dog, most notably its breed and age. Because of this, it’s important that everything you do, from meeting nutritional needs to exercise and grooming, be considered with your pet in mind. However, there are a number of needs, common to all dogs, that must be taken into account in order for the animals to be healthy and able to successfully adapt in the family.

Physical activity

Every dog needs physical activity, but the level and nature of exercise should take into account the age, size and breed of the animal.

  • Make sure that the dog has a place for physical activity: walks with the dog should not be considered just an opportunity to quickly take the animal to the toilet.
  • Little by little and often: remember that medium, large and very large dogs have a longer growth period than smaller ones. During this period, their bones and joints develop. In this regard, such dogs should not be traveled long distances or engaged in certain sports until they reach adulthood. For such dogs, it is better to choose more frequent, but less intense sessions of physical activity.
  • Set aside time for play: for the dog, play is a form of natural physical activity that helps in the psychological development of the animal. Play is good for a dog for several different reasons: you spend time with your pet, strengthening the emotional bonds between you; control his weight, maintain his vitality and the health of the cardiovascular and immune systems.

Living conditions

Puppies are very sensitive to what is happening around them, and negative experiences will have a lasting effect. A puppy’s behavioral development goes through several stages, including a period of socialization that begins at four weeks of age and continues until the puppy is 14 weeks old.

The period of struggle with fear and the period of socialization proceed simultaneously, so any psychological stress that occurred during this time can have long-term negative consequences. Because of this, it is important to closely monitor your puppy’s reactions to environmental factors from the very first day he enters your home.

  • Set up a separate sleeping area for your puppy. Be sure to provide your puppy with a separate sleeping area where he can be alone and feel safe.
  • Create an environment rich in stimulating factors. For example, puppies like big cardboard boxes to hide in and rubber toys to chew on. It is important to ensure that puppy play is always supervised.
  • Introduce your pet to the new environment gradually. If you live in a city, you should gradually introduce your puppy to the things of city life that he will have to deal with, such as cars, escalators, elevators, trains, trams or buses.
  • Train your puppy to be alone. The puppy must learn to stay alone at home from time to time.
  • Introduce your pet to other dogs. One of the conditions for successful puppy socialization is communication with dogs and other animals, so your pet should take part in family walks as often as possible.
  • Walk the puppy. Don’t put off walking your puppy. He should begin to explore the environment from the age of two months.

Feeding

As with exercise, a puppy’s nutritional needs change as it grows. At first, puppies should be fed several small meals a day, gradually reducing the number of feedings to once or twice a day. The size and breed of a dog also affect its nutritional needs, as some dogs are more prone to digestive problems than others. The dog should always have access to water. It is also important not to overfeed your pet.

If you are not sure how much food your dog needs or how different growth stages affect the amount of food he eats, ask your veterinarian. He will explain how to create optimal conditions for the growth of your pet and how to prevent the development of obesity and increased stress on the emerging joints.

Primarily provides energy to the animal, but also helps to build and maintain body cells, helping to prevent digestive disorders, skin, dental, joint problems and problems associated with aging. Nutritious food that meets the requirements of a healthy diet contains the right amount of nutrients.

  • Do not switch your pet to a new food abruptly. In order not to harm the puppy’s digestive system, in the first days in a new home, give him the same food as he was fed before. If you want to switch foods, do so carefully during the weekly transition period, mixing the old and new foods in varying proportions.
  • Give your pet food that is appropriate for its age. For puppies, special products have been developed that are ideally suited to meet the needs of animals during the growth period. Follow your veterinarian’s instructions to create optimal conditions for your puppy to grow.
  • Set the daily routine. Dogs are pack animals, so they need precise hierarchical markers. Feed your puppy every day in the same place and at the same time after you and your family have already eaten. This will allow him to understand that you occupy a dominant position in the house. After feeding, if possible, do not allow the puppy to actively play for one to two hours.
  • Make sure treats are the exception to the rule, not the rule. Treats should be given on rare occasions to help the dog maintain a normal weight. Sugar and chocolate are prohibited as chocolate can be poisonous to dogs. As a reward during the training of the animal, you can use low-calorie croquettes.

Grooming and health

Regular grooming should become a habit. This will help keep your puppy’s skin and coat healthy, as well as bonding with your pet. In addition, coat care increases the likelihood of detecting various abnormalities and pathologies (for example, infestation with external parasites, skin diseases or areas of discomfort) at an early stage. Most dogs enjoy grooming if they get used to it at an early age. However, it’s never too late to start!

  • Start caring for your dog’s teeth at a young age. This will allow the puppy to get used to brushing his teeth with a toothbrush and toothpaste specially made for dogs. Try brushing your puppy’s teeth several times a week.
  • Book your puppy for vaccinations. Vaccination helps to avoid contracting infectious diseases, which can sometimes be fatal. Some vaccines are mandatory, while others are advisory. The puppy vaccination program usually starts at six to eight weeks of age.
  • Consult your veterinarian about deworming your pet. Puppies often get worms, so until they are six months old, it is recommended to do this treatment every month, and then every six months thereafter. Your veterinarian will create the correct deworming schedule for your puppy to follow.
  • Consult your veterinarian for flea protection. Be sure to protect your puppy from fleas and ticks. In order for the protection to work properly, it is necessary to treat not only the dog, but also the environment in which the animal is kept. Consult your veterinarian.
  • Consider spaying or neutering your pet. The decision to spay or castrate is a very important one and must be carefully considered. It is important to weigh any potential benefits of spaying or neutering versus the possibility of having offspring from your dog in the future.

Training

Good behavior and obedience must be developed from an early age. Puppy training should begin as early as possible – at the age when the puppy is most easily trained.

For your comfort and the peace of mind of those around you, your dog must learn the basic rules of behavior in society. Don’t hesitate to seek professional help with training your dog. There are many kennel clubs and puppy schools to help you.

  • Toilet training. When a puppy appears in your house, he most likely will not be toilet trained yet. Training takes time and patience. Never punish or scold a puppy with whom an embarrassment has occurred. Instead, find ways to prevent situations where the puppy goes to the toilet in the house.
  • Learn to respond to a nickname from an early age. From the very beginning, say the puppy’s name slowly and clearly to get his attention and associate the name with each command. Wait for the moment when the puppy is alert, so that it is easier for him to react, and call your pet over to develop obedience skills.
  • Gradually accustom the puppy to the car. Teach your puppy to ride a car from an early age so that they do not cause him anxiety. Before you go on a long trip, take a few short rides with your puppy.

When you have a puppy, there is a lot of information to consider about keeping, raising and caring for him, including all the initial nuances necessary to ensure the physical and emotional health of your pet. However, if you do everything right from the very beginning, it will be much easier for you and your dog in the future. If in any doubt, you can seek advice and support from your veterinarian.

How should you take care of your dog?

Dog care consists of many factors, in the article “Puppy care” we talked about what conditions your pet needs to create for a full life. Be sure to read the materials of this article, in it you will receive a lot of useful tips.

In this article, we will touch on the topic of dog hair care in more detail, as well as talk about the issue of sterilization, whether this procedure is necessary, how it affects the well-being and health of dogs.

Dog grooming

Dog grooming requires some effort on your part, but this procedure is simply necessary to make your pet feel good and comfortable.

Grooming for dogs of different breeds depends on the characteristics of the coat, the thickness and length of the coat, the softness and capriciousness of the hairs. It would seem that the usual bathing and combing procedures should be the same for everyone, however, there are some nuances in caring for a dog’s coat in each case.

Four groups of dogs can be distinguished according to the degree of difficulty in grooming.

The first group of dogs is represented by breeds that require the most attention in caring for the coat of these breeds. This group includes dogs whose hair must be cut and plucked. This includes breeds such as terriers, cocker spaniels, poodles, schnauzers.

In second place in terms of difficulty in grooming are breeds of long-haired dogs. These dogs need to be brushed regularly. This is a fairly large group of breeds, for example, Collie, Pekingese, Bobtail, etc.

Next come the short-haired breeds, also a fairly large group, which includes Dobermans, Rottweilers, boxers and many others.

Finally, this classification is completed by dogs that do not have a coat, such as the Mexican Hairless, Chinese Crested, etc. Despite the fact that these dogs have no hair, this does not mean that they do not need attention, since these dogs need special care. behind their skin.

Daily grooming of a dog’s coat is of great importance. After all, not only the appearance of the dog depends on this, combing allows you to get rid of dirt, dandruff, dead skin cells, prevents hair from falling off, improves blood supply to the hairs due to a small massage of the skin with a comb.

In order to take care of your pet’s coat as efficiently and correctly as possible, it is advisable for you to visit professional dog hairdressers – grooming salons. They will give you professional advice on caring for your pet, help you choose the right brushes and shampoos, and tell you how to care for your pet at home.

In our article, we give general average recommendations for grooming dogs.

So, if you are the owner of a pet of a short-haired dog breed, then you will not have any special problems with caring for a dog’s coat. For daily care, you will need a terry towel or a special mitt, twice a week you need to comb the dog with a brush with hard natural bristles.

If your dog is a long-haired breed, then you will need a comb with long and blunt teeth at the ends for grooming. Another tool is a slicker, a wire brush or, in other words, a slicker. It is the slicker that helps to fight the matting of wool into tangles. However, often the slicker should not be used, otherwise your dog will go bald. Use the slicker brush once or twice a month and it won’t harm your dog. Only during periods of molting, the slicker and comb can be used daily. You may also need a special tangle comb, tangles mostly form on the paws, behind the ears and under the armpits.

Dogs with very hard coats need annual grooming and plucking – trimming. Haircuts are held twice a year, according to an individually designed program. Such maintenance of a dog is determined not only by the standards of its appearance, but also by elementary necessity. After all, if you do not pluck and cut dogs with such a hard coat, they become very overgrown and become unkempt in appearance. However, shortcomings in appearance are not the main problem in this case, if you do not cut and pluck certain parts of the body, then old hairs will prevent the growth of new ones, the dog will experience constant itching and irritation. An infection can get into scratches and microcracks and provoke skin diseases that are very difficult to treat. The style of haircuts for different breeds changes a little every year. If you want to participate in exhibitions with your pet, then you need to take into account such fashion trends. Today on sale you can find a wide variety of different types of scissors, however, it is not easy to make the right haircut for a dog on your own, it is better to turn to professionals.

When choosing combs and brushes for your dogs, consult the seller in the pet store, he will help you make the right choice. One general rule for all types of brushes is that the ends of the teeth should be blunt so as not to damage the skin of the dog. The length of the teeth depends on the length of the dog’s coat, the longer the coat, the longer the teeth of the brush. The density of the teeth also depends on the density of the wool. The owner of the dog should have two types of brushes with sparse teeth for quick combing and more frequent teeth for more thorough combing.

For daily grooming of dogs with coarse hair, combs with hard metal teeth are used. In schnauzers and terriers, you need to wipe the beard after feeding with a mitt and comb it periodically with a comb.

It is also recommended to choose the right food for the health of the coat and skin in order to maintain their condition from the inside.

Bathing dogs

Dog grooming includes bathing. The frequency of bathing also depends on the type of dog’s coat.

For long-haired dogs with matted hair, more frequent bathing and thorough combing is desirable, for short-haired dogs, bathing is less frequent, about once a month. Bathing water should correspond to the dog’s body temperature and vary between 37.5-39°C.

Long-haired dogs should be dried with a hair dryer; short-haired ones should be thoroughly wiped with a terry towel.

There is a wide variety of specialty shampoos and conditioners to suit coat types and grooming needs. You can get more detailed information at a pet store or grooming salon.

Dog nail trimming

In addition to wool, it is also necessary to trim the dog’s nails, about once every 7-10 days, while it is important not to touch the blood vessel in the cavity of the claw, which is located at the base. Excess hair is also cut off on the paws, while the style of the haircut corresponds to the breed of the dog. Tangles often form on the paws, they need to be combed out and cut off. You also need to inspect the paws daily for the presence of dirt, glass, chewing gum and other contaminants. If the dog walked on fresh asphalt, tar, and other chemicals, you need to generously smear the paws with vegetable oil and wash it off with plenty of soapy water or a special cleanser to remove this substance. In winter, the streets and roads are sprinkled with reagents, so after a walk it is necessary to wash the paws with water and soap. In summer, it is enough to wipe the dog’s paws after a walk with a dry, clean cloth. If the skin on the paw pads is cracking, then lubricate them with vegetable oil or a fat cream.

How to take care of a dog at home in an apartment?

Caring for a dog is not limited to the correct maintenance of its coat, the dog’s eyes also require attention.

In a healthy dog, the eyes should be clear, if you notice purulent discharge from the eyes, this means that the dog may be sick. It can be both a sign of an allergy and a symptom of an infectious eye disease. In any case, you must definitely show the dog to the veterinarian.

If your dog walks in tall grass, wash your dog’s eyes with water or tea leaves from the outer corner of the eye to the inner (nose). After all, pollen, seeds and other particles of dirt can get into the eyes.

Ear care should be done weekly. To do this, you need to pluck the hair inside the auditory canal. If the ears are not very dirty, they are wiped with a swab dipped in vegetable oil. In addition, a huge number of special products for maintaining ear hygiene in dogs are now being produced, which have a mild composition and can be used weekly, which is especially important for lop-eared dogs. These dogs have an increased tendency to ear infections, so it is necessary to monitor the condition of their ears especially carefully.

Care of teeth and gums.

When chewing on solid food, the dog’s teeth are mechanically cleaned of plaque, thereby preventing the formation of tartar. If it was not possible to prevent the formation of tartar, then you need to contact your veterinarian to solve this problem. To avoid the formation of tartar, you can brush your dog’s teeth with special tooth powder and paste for dogs, and wipe the polished teeth with a soft cloth.

Breeding or spaying of dogs

An important decision in providing quality care for your pet is spaying of dogs, care covers this issue as well.

If you don’t plan to breed dogs and you don’t want to deal with your dog’s unwanted pregnancy, then the question of spaying is important.

It’s all about how the dog’s body works, whether it’s a female or a cable, they are primarily animals that are not able to control their instincts, including the instinct of procreation.

The unrealized instinct of procreation imposes harmful consequences on the health of the dog. It’s all about the hormonal background, which is completely confused in dogs living an inferior lifestyle. An unrealized instinct from time to time increases the hormonal failure in the animal’s body, which ultimately leads to numerous serious diseases in the form of cancer and neoplasms of the genital organs and mammary glands.

If you cannot or do not want to give your pet the opportunity to fully realize his sexual instinct, then free him from this torment.

Numerous studies show that the pros of sterilization are much greater than the cons.

So spayed dogs become more affectionate and obedient, more calm about other animals, not prone to escape and live longer. They have a lower risk of chronic diseases such as pyometra or transmissible sarcoma. There is no risk of sexually transmitted diseases in dogs.

Sterilization takes place in two ways: endoscopic sterilization and laparoscopic sterilization. The most commonly used laparoscopic with complete or partial removal of the reproductive organs. For cables, this procedure is easier, by removing the testicles, for females, sterilization is more difficult, it takes place during strip surgery. During the operation, either the uterus or the ovaries, or both, are removed. This is a very responsible operation, as it is important that the reproductive organs are completely removed during the operation, without any residues, otherwise there will be complications after the operation. It is important to remember that if only the uterus is removed from the bitch, and the ovaries remain, she loses her ability to bear children, but hormone production continues, the bitch’s behavior does not change and there remains a high risk of developing diseases of the reproductive system, including the development of mammary gland tumors.

It is necessary to choose a clinic with a good reputation, look at the reviews.

In addition to surgery, there is chemical sterilization. The disadvantages of this method are the risk of developing numerous diseases caused by hormonal failure in the dog’s body under the influence of these medications.
