Philosophy and Goals
We believe each child is a unique individual and that children are happy and secure when they have plenty of opportunities to succeed each day. Success breeds self confidence, and self confident children approach learning as fun and actively search for information and solutions to problems. We believe in a developmental approach to learning: an approach where the child’s individuality is treasured and his/her independence encouraged.
We want to provide an environment that encourages each child to grow creatively, spiritually, emotionally, intellectually, physically, and socially. We want to make it easy for each child to:
1. Develop security and independence in a world outside the home
2. Make friends and learn how to handle social situations
3. Help each develop a good self image
4. Stimulate the natural curiosity in each child to question, explore, and experiment
5. Help each child develop his/her cognitive skills
6. Provide each child with many experiences of being loved, understood, accepted, and successful: to find out that he/she is a person valued for their unique being—-a child of God.
Curriculum
Educators and psychologists agree that between the years of birth and five, children develop, learn , and grow more than they ever will again during any other time in their lives. To make the most of these years, your child’s preschool experience has been carefully planned….

My grandchildren have been going here for almost a year. They are ages 9 and 5. The social skills they have learned and just the growth in general have been incredible to watch. My shy grandson is now inKindergarten and thriving because of the skills he was taught at this school for pre-school. My granddaughter is so mature and nurturing, always thinking of others and wanting to help because they are taught to treat each other with respect. I just can’t say enough about the facility, how it is set up and how well they have dealt with the whole Covid 19 with kids of all ages. They were one of the few schools I believe that did not have to shut down due to the attention to detail this staff uses with cleanliness. I would highly and gladly recommend this school to any parent of any aged child. Your children will be taken care of with the best of care and they learn so much while having fun. I’m here to help infants grow independently and being nurtured at the same time. I believe a child can grow and learn so much under many philosophers. The first year, a baby can learn so much. Many don’tbelieve they can learn the concept of colors and numbers, but with activities and repetition, they can master the fine art of early education.
A lot of interaction between baby and myself as well as the social interaction of other infants. Also time to explore the world around them with no interference.
I welcome you and your family into my home for wonderful care and exploration.
I am more than just a SAHM looking to care for other children. I’ve been in this field for ten years and counting. I’ve worked in a child care center setting, as well and nanny positions. Starting at $15/hr
Description:
Hi! My name is Akiko Strock and I am a professional and experienced and certified in first aid and CPR. I provide care for families in my home with a small number of kids. The childcare I provide is my ownbusiness and I provide tight book keeping of all payments and provide families with that information to claim their childcare tax credit. I provide families with a contract as a way to protect both myself and the family. I pride myself as being communicative and transparent with families. I have my bachelors degree in Philosophy, but have loved being a mother and have poured my life into it. I have a son and two daughters. My son is 7 years old and attends private school (in person learning) and my daughter is 5 and will be starting kindergarten in the fall, and my other daughter is 1. I am looking to provide care for one more infants or toddlers or preschoolers, or school age children (I’m willing to provide help with school work to those who are doing remote learning). Having the children around each other is a great opportunity for socializing and I’ve found that they learn a lot from each other. I am not just a babysitter, I use every opportunity for educating and developing milestones through a structured day of interactive play, reading, singing songs, and going on walks to the park or to the library for story time. I provide all meals and snacks as well as diaper wipes. I am very comfortable with newborns and have many “tricks” up my sleeves to help nurture babies. I am also comfortable with growing toddlers. Potty training, teaching shapes, colors, and letters, as well as outdoor time is part of our daily routine. Nap/rest time is always at the same time and the kids really benefit from having consistency in our day and the routine I establish helps to make the day smooth. Although there is a routine to each day, I do love taking the kids on little field trips to the playground, library, and sometimes even more adventurous places like the butterfly pavillion or the children’s museum, etc. I have a car that seats 7. I am a strong Christian and my love for Jesus influences every area of my life including my professions. I love to teach kids about the love of Christ through prayer, reading, and singing songs. Included in my services I would provide all meals and snacks, as well as diaper wipes. I have over 10 years’ experience and can provide references for recent families I have provided care for. I hope to hear from you soon!…

Our Custom-Built, Child-Centered Indoor Spaces
Designed For Discovery and Fun
Nestled in a residential area, our custom facility offers a variety of environments and experiences for all age groups. There are a number of indoor areas where children do not have to be confined to their classroom; they can explore other learning environments throughout our complex. Little ones can investigate in the toddler’s interactive hallway and get wiggles out in the gross motor room while older children explore and learn through the library, Ellee’s cave, the Computer Castle, the Music Room, and Kid’s Kitchen.
Our on-site children’s museum is bursting with opportunities for dramatic play and hands-on fun and learning. Children cannot get enough of these large, separate, heated/cooled buildings in our backyard. These custom spaces allow children to engage in learning outside their classroom and provide additional opportunities for creative and imaginative play. These five major play areas include:
The Inventor’s House
Children learn cause and effect through interactive exhibits that make scientific principles fun and engaging. The creative displays focus on principles like gravity, electricity, air movement, magnets, and engineering. Children’s minds are challenged through interactive learning and discovery.
The General Store
Children are immersed in a grocery store environment where they role-play different jobs. Our shoppers learn math through making purchases and learn about making healthy food choices by stocking their baskets with a variety of fruits and vegetables. A section of the General Store boasts rotating themes such as Starbucks and Chic-fil-a to add to the fun, exciting atmosphere.
The Creation Station
The Bible is brought to life through thoughtful, custom interactive displays. Children are completely immersed in the story through role-play, costumes, props, and physical settings that specifically reflect Noah’s Ark, Jesus’ birth, and Jesus’ resurrection.
The Discovery Gym
A large, open space for gross-motor play, games, gymnastics, and special activities.
Provides an opportunity for age-appropriate children to use hand tools properly. These thoughtful, special projects instill a sense of responsibility, pride, and accomplishment by planning and executing projects.
Wholesome and delicious food, catered by a professional chef
We treat your child to a variety of healthy foods, ensuring they get the daily nutrition they need. The menu is planned by our in-house cook who prepares the daily breakfast and snacks. In addition, our lunches are catered by Mr. Gabe, a professional chef at K-Fusion. His lunches focus on healthy, fresh dishes that offer children a range of diverse meals to experience and enjoy!
To continue the promotion of healthy eating, children, starting at the toddler age, tend our school garden. From understanding where our fruits and vegetables come from, to watching a beautiful flower grow and bloom, there is no better way to learn about food and healthy eating than to just get out there and do it! Classes have their own garden plots that they plant, water, weed, maintain and watch grow throughout the summer months. It is fun, rewarding, and educational!

Simply put, there is no comparison to what A Child’s Touch (ACT) provides for my two children. The love, support and dedication of the teachers and staff is unparalleled. The learning environment provides fun play, structured education and lots of hands on learning that keep my children stimulated all day! That’s why making the 45 minute drive each day to and from ACT, is worth every second! I can’t imagine my children thriving at any other center as much as they do at ACT. It was a true blessing when we entered ACT four years ago and I feel so privileged and honored for our family to be part of the ACT family!
Kate
A Child’s Touch is a phenomenal preschool and educational facility. Their dedicated staff and excellent teachers are committed, engaged and patient. Our children have excelled at ACT and love to go to school everyday. Jackson is reading above grade level as a first grader, and Gabbie and Emma sing a multitude of songs that give thanks to the Lord for all they have. Jackson describes ACT as “fun and encourages creativity.” Despite the daily drive on I-25 from Erie to Thornton, it is worth every minute of it, because our children reap the benefits. There are other facilities and day care centers closer to home, but none compare to ACT. We are blessed to entrust such fabulous people with the care of our children when we cannot be with them. We don’t believe our children would be as well cared for and enjoy their time away from us at any other facility. We highly recommend A Child’s Touch!
Rich & Amanda
Words cannot express our gratitude for the loving care you have provided both of our children over the past 6 years. Choosing a school for our children to grow up in was a huge and scary decision, and we are so very happy that we obviously made the correct decision to come to A Child’s Touch. There has never been a day that we were not confident when we dropped off our girls in your care that they would come out with anything but positive experiences. The trust that we put in your school and the care and love that you put into our children’s lives cannot be described in words. We can only say that everyone at A Child’s Touch deserves more credit and thanks than we can express and that you truly have such an exceptional school and staff. Thank you so much for blessing our children with love, respect, guidance and wisdom and teaching them how to make good decisions and to share in the love of God. We are going to miss all of you!!
Tim, Jen, Kira, Kelsey K.
We’ve been taking our children there for just over 6 years now and am still amazed at all that they do for the kids. My son started in the toddler room and went there through kindergarten and my daughter started as an infant (3-months) and is still currently there in the pre-K classroom. We will have her go through kindergarten as their program is PHENOMENAL. From the beginning, I was very impressed with the infant room as I loved the care that each and every woman provided for my daughter when she was a baby. It was always extremely clean and really liked how they put thought into installing in floor heating so the babies would never be cold. I never had a concern about the patience, care and experience by the teachers in the room. As the children get a bit older (1 and 2), I really liked the philosophy of the playtime (both inside and outside). I didn’t realize how important it was to separate out the play areas so that the younger kiddos could still have their own’ play area and not worry about getting trampled… and vice versa. Potty training… a challenging stage in life… both our kids were always treated with such patience through that stage which, attributed to their success. The education that the kids receive as well at each age is so carefully planned out and our children just thrived (and continue to thrive) in their learning environment.

I have twin boys that have attended the ACT program since they were in Pre-K. We had planned on going to public school for kindergarten, but after seeing the strides they were making compared to their peers, we decided to attend the Kindergarten offered by ACT, and I’m glad we did! They are now reading and writing at an impressive level, and the passion and devotion of the teachers are second to none. We also enjoy the activities and programs as do our boys and other family members. ACT has given us great memories and given our boys a real foothold on schooling and a head start to their journey ahead, and for this, I am very thankful!
Chad H.
We have been very pleased with the social and academic growth that our son has made while at A Child’s Touch. He entered Kindergarten with reading and math skills and the teachers worked with him to quickly move him to books that were geared towards his reading level rather than have him go along with the class. He was also given a chance to improve his math skills once he completed the current lesson. They encouraged him to become social with his peers and come out of his shell with various fun and education projects. A Child’s Touch is constantly planning lessons and activities to stimulate his intellect, his moral compass and his social skills. The lessons and activities also encourage a love of learning that is hard to find anywhere else. The all day structure makes working easier knowing that there is no transfer to another location for the afternoon and the care is excellent and educational.

I just want to say THANK YOU to you, your family, & the entire staff at “A Child’s Touch” for the excellent beginning you gave my granddaughter, Madison in Religion, Safety, Art, Reading, Spelling, Arithmetic, Science, Ocean Life, & the Dinosaurs. She loved going to school there & you kept a very safe environment for her to learn & play in. The Passion Play that you orchestrated with the children was, I know, a great deal of work for the teachers, however, it will be a very special remembrance for the children & for all of us who will remind our children from time to time, of what Jesus did for us.
Linda
My first impressions sold me on A Child’s Touch. The staff alone is what sets ACT apart from other daycare centers and providers. I couldn’t find any other center that has staff with the length of employment as do the employees at A Child’s Touch. As well, ACT is a safe, secure environment with a solid, developmentally appropriate curriculum that is supported by their facilities. Within months of having my child at ACT, I have fallen in love and can proudly define for you why it is truly an exceptional daycare center. Again, the staff at ACT is what sets them apart from good daycare. The staff brings a wealth of experience, a deep knowledge of child development and history of serving children and the community. We have truly partnered through such milestones as baby food, bottle weaning, transitioning to a new room and other things as they come up. I am supported along the way as if by own sisters or mother. Not only is my child in great hands, so is my family.
Karen Z.
Thank you for taking such amazing care of our girls for the past four years. All of their teachers have been so caring and amazing that we always felt 100% at ease leaving them in their care. Mackenzie and Madison have made many friends and have had many wonderful experiences during their time at ACT. ACT staff have always been supportive, gracious, and accommodating when we have most needed it.

Ignite Your Child’s Natural Love Of Discovery
The journey began in 1977, when a married couple opened a small, non-denominational, Christian school in a mobile home park. Ever since, A Child’s Touch has grown along with the local need for quality child care, and has expanded as much as their hearts have in their endeavor to mentor, engage, and serve families.
Meet Mike and Debi Grillo
Mike has a double degree in elementary education and special education from Northern Arizona University, taught the A.C.T. academic kindergarten program for 18 years, and continues to be an on-site mentor to the teachers.
Debi has an associate’s degree in early childhood education.
Both founders, Mike and Debi, are involved with the overall management of the childcare center on a daily basis.
For more than 40 years, founders Mike and Debi Grillo have been hands-on from the ground up.
At first, he taught kindergarten and handled maintenance for the building and the playgrounds, while she managed the office and staff, and focused on curriculum.
Today, A.C.T. is proud to serve the grandchildren of those who first enrolled all those years ago, and Mike and Debi take joy to see what’s become of the seeds they sowed all those years ago.
Together, the couple has continued to reinvent early child care to provide families with faith-based education that honors a child’s natural love of discovery, while keeping up with their goal of building a new structure to spark young imaginations every year.
That’s why A.C.T. has burgeoned into a unique, nationally recognized*, 3-acre sanctuary replete with 15 playgrounds that feature a redwood castle spanning 2,400 ft., a soccer field where team sports instill cooperation and a nature area to teach appreciation of the outdoors. A Woodworking Barn that houses age-appropriate tools so children can enjoy building their very own creations. The General Store is where children create a world of their own and “shop” for fresh fruits and vegetables. Engaging, interactive experiences with cause and effect activities bring science and play together. Children tend multiple gardens and splash in waterfalls and ponds to learn about life cycles and God’s creation. They explore the Circle of Honor that pays tribute to God, our great country, and those who have served to protect our freedoms. An interactive water display allows the children to put their hands in a flow of water on a giant rock slab.
*A.C.T. earned national certification from the Arbor Day Foundation for this new playground, and has one of the first 100 certified Nature Explore playgrounds in the nation.

Year-Round Programs with A Team You Can Trust
We offer year-round programs for infants as young as 6 weeks through kindergarten and have more than 30 team members who we consider family. Knowledgeable and nurturing, they illustrate our core values and boast a low turnaround meaning stronger relationships are formed over time, inspiring trust.
Our Nature-Based, Exploratory Curriculum: ACT Academics©
Our curriculum takes a creative approach because we know that worksheets are stagnant, and outdoor learning is not, and children learn best through experience when they’re engaged. Count on our teaching to also impart Christ-based values of acceptance, respect, and gratitude.
Parent Partnerships Are A Critical Piece Of Our Success
We know parents are their children’s first teachers. We want your child to thrive in our setting and to aid in that, we want to intentionally build a positive relationship with the adults who play the largest role in their child’s daily lives: their parents or primary caregivers. With clear communication and a positive partnership, we can work in tandem to reach your child’s full potential. We also strive to have every family become familiar with our Core Values. We want to embody those values in our interactions with the children, families, and the staff.
Our Core Values
Faith
In every situation, acknowledge that God is in control and working for our good. In all decisions seek God and trust His will be done. Be willing to take risks. (Philippians 1:6, Romans 8:28, Hebrews 11:1,6 , Proverbs 16:3)
Integrity
Honesty in all things without compromising the truth. Cultivate a sense of honesty and integrity in all that is said and done. Seek to do what is right before God. (Proverbs 10:9, Proverbs 28:6, II Corinthians 8:21, Hebrews 13:18, Psalms 25:21)
Intentional
We desire to be intentional in our ministry and mission focused. God came in human form with a mission. We want to be intentional with lessons, activities, interaction with children, parents, leaders, teachers and our community as we follow Christ’s example of His direct intent to love, teach and serve. (John 3:16-17, I Corinthians 6:19-20)
Environment
God is the founder of all things wonderful including imagination, curiosity and creativity. To fan the flame, we will provide an ever-changing and stimulating environment where children can create life-long memories through creative play and interaction with God’s creation. The children can expand their knowledge through hands-on activities, whether in the classrooms or on our safe, spacious playgrounds that challenge the mind and promote the desire to learn. (Genesis 1:1, Jeremiah 33:2-3)
Individuality
Each child is a unique and special creation from God with different gifts, abilities and strengths. Each child learns differently and at different rates. We cater to this premise in the environment and our curriculum adjusts to meet the needs of individual children in each classroom. (Psalm 139:14, I Peter 4:10)
Fun
Adopt a joyful spirit, celebrate life, and be adventurous. Embrace the wonder of being a child. (I Thessalonians 5:16, Psalms 16:11, Proverbs 17:22, Jeremiah 29:11, John 15:11, Ephesians 5:19, Philippians 4:4 )
Excellence
We will not settle for mediocrity, but excellence! We do not attempt perfection, but excellence. We represent the Lord and as such, we want excellence to be a part of everything we do and provide; environment, classrooms, curriculum, dealings with families, and how we deal with each other. We will strive for the highest standards in all aspects of our job. (Ephesians 3:20, Philippians 4:8, Colossians 3:23)
Positive
We are all created in the image of God. We recognize positive patterns are developed at a young age. We will be positive and encouraging in our interactions and environments. We will strive to uplift the children to see themselves through God’s eyes and their value to Him and promote a good self-image. (Psalm 139:13-16, I Corinthians 6:19-20)
Passion
Love what you do and do what you love! Our administrators and teachers are passionate about making the learning process accessible, understandable, and exciting. This passion generates a whole-hearted devotion to making a difference in the lives of children and families. In this way we honor the Lord Jesus and demonstrate His love to all who walk through our doors. (Colossians 3:23, I Corinthians 10:31, Colossians 3:17)
Preparedness
We will provide a solid foundation and give each child the tools needed to have every advantage possible for their life journey. We will prepare children spiritually and academically to go out into the world for the next chapter in their life to other academic environments and other schools. We wish to prepare children for any school they might attend, secular or Christian. We must put on the full armor of God to protect ourselves. (Proverbs 20:11, Proverbs 22:6, I Corinthians 9:24, Ephesians 6:10-17, Hebrews 4:12)
Stewardship
Be faithful with the resources God has entrusted to us. (Luke 16:10-11, I Peter 4:10, I Corinthians 4:2)
Discipleship
To actively seek to minister to children, staff, parents and our community. Share that Jesus loves them. Walk alongside them as they mature in their Christian faith. (Isaiah 55:11, Matthew 19:14, John 13:35, II Timothy 2:2)
Love
God showed His unconditional love for us, and through our actions, we can demonstrate God’s love to the children, families, co-workers, and everyone we meet. We know that while there are many aspects of our program that will support the growth of children, it is God’s love that will last through their entire lifetime and into eternity. (John 13:34-35, Mark 12:30-31, Colossians 3:14, I John 4:7-8, I Corinthians 13:13)
Community
Build authentic long-term relationships in the context of a loving community. Respect and support the school community that first begins here at ACT and then branches outside our walls to help support the needs of the greater community. Strive for unity. (Mark 3:25, Hebrews 10:25, Acts 2:46, Ephesians 4:3)

Music and Music Therapy (Diana Thornton).
A child with cerebral palsy: help, care, development. Cerebral Palsy
Library
– Development of musical language
– Music therapy
– Development of musical dialogue
Music
No matter how we feel about our abilities, we are all musical. Imagine how a baby feels in the womb. For nine months, the child hears the rhythm of the mother’s heartbeat, her breathing, voice and intonations, the phrases that she utters, feels the rhythmic movements of her body. He hears how the rhythmic sounds of the heartbeat are superimposed by the erratic noises that accompany digestion (and its disorders!), And the noise from the flow of blood through the vessels. A newborn is perfectly familiar with rhythm, tempo, pauses and phrases. In the mother’s stomach, he was already “dancing” to the music coming to him from outside, and it can be said that the artistic abilities for dancing and music are based on the experience that the child received in the womb.
The significance of this experience for you and the baby is that you have a common musical language for both of you. Many people do not dare to turn to music, they think that they do not have an ear for music, they simply do not know what to do with it. You’ve probably never looked at music from such a “basic” perspective, but I hope you now have no doubts about your musical abilities.
Music can be used to entertain a child – turn on audio cassettes or radio for him. But “live” music will bring much more benefit – songs and simple melodies – that you yourself will bring to joint games and enrich communication with the baby. If you know songs and nursery rhymes – use them, if you don’t remember any – learn them from audio recordings. Why don’t you compose your own “special” song? All you need is to come up with a couplet of short lines and a simple motive, or put your words on a well-known melody. Compose songs for different occasions, such as “bathing” or “dressing”.
Songs will come to your rescue when you don’t know what to say. They will help your baby to more easily learn your words, sentences, turns of speech. The song can become a guide for the baby, which will tell him the upcoming events. A visually impaired child will always be able to tell where you are if you hum a song while doing chores.
Responding to the sounds your child makes is very important for the development of his communication and speech skills, and this is discussed in other chapters. You may find it easier to repeat any of your baby’s sounds if you think of them as music rather than words. Listen to the rhythm of the sounds your baby makes, or watch the rhythm of his movements. You can take them as a basis for the game – repeat these rhythms after the baby and wait for the answer. You can beat the rhythm with your palms, tap it on the baby’s body, or tap the rhythm on the high chair on which the baby is sitting so that he feels the vibrations. Even a hearing-impaired child can perceive vibration and will therefore enjoy playing with rhythm. If the baby’s abilities allow – put him on a wedge-shaped pillow and let him tap something, at least with a spoon, on an upside down plastic bowl – special tools are not at all necessary.
Pour sand, lentils or beans into a plastic bottle or balloon before you inflate it – you get instruments with different sounds. Tie bottle caps or crisp paper to a silk scarf and let your baby play. When the child makes a sound, return the sound to him with your voice or with the help of some kind of “instrument” – so you will have a dialogue. Even if the baby responds slowly or feels the rhythm poorly, then the emergence of a dialogue is the biggest success of your overall game.
Music therapy
Music therapy is a special interactive method of helping adults and children with various types of disorders, which uses musical instruments and other equipment. The essence of the method is joint music-making. The therapist uses the sounds that the child makes, his rhythms, as well as the sounds that he makes with the help of instruments, and on this basis he builds his interaction and relationship with the baby. The music therapist is always a great musician, so he uses all the sounds of the child as elements of music. He answers the baby with a sung melody or plays a musical instrument (for example, a piano, clarinet or violin) in response, or plays a melody on simple toy instruments.
Any signal of the child (for example, stereotyped sounds or movements) is perceived by the music therapist as intentional and meaningful. As a result, the baby himself changes his attitude to these signals. For example, he begins to use them in order to get an answer. The sound acquires the meaning of a communication skill – a useless action turns into a useful one. In the process of normal development of the child, the same thing happens. The kid who repeats “pa-pa-pa-pa” doesn’t mean “dad” at first. Those around him “speak” for him, it is they who attribute a certain meaning to the child’s babble. Similarly, stereotypical actions (sounds and movements that are voiced by musical instruments) are assigned the meaning of a musical phrase.
The musical dialogue that takes place between the child and the therapist may be the longest and most skillful interaction that the child is ever capable of. Movement and speech problems often interfere with normal everyday interactions with others. Music therapy for such a child serves as a bridge from the world of loneliness.
The child directly influences the music that the music therapist performs – in response to any of his signals, the therapist changes the melody, adjusting it to the child. So the baby realizes that the sounds that the therapist makes are addressed specifically to him. This gives him a sense of his own importance. Such an experience is often extremely significant for the child and stimulates his development most effectively. Children enjoy the very process of creating music, so the motivation for each child in music therapy classes is very strong, it does not depend on whether he prefers to be only a listener or takes a more active part in the classes.
Music can help the child “organize” movements, a music therapist can teach the child to coordinate their movements (for example, when it is necessary to beat a drum). On the other hand, music has an emotional impact. It releases the feelings of the child, which he sometimes cannot express otherwise, allows him to express disappointment, despondency or joy. She gives him the opportunity to feel understood, to pour out the feelings hidden in him, to share them with others. Combinations of sounds characteristic for the baby open a window to the inner world for the music therapist. The therapist can talk to the child about his feelings and, depending on the situation, put these feelings into words or again into music.
If music therapy appeals to you and you would like to try it for your child, ask your school or health facility about it. You can also contact the Association of Professional Music Therapists (see Appendix V). Similar organizations exist in many countries.

“I can’t forgive my mother”
Shelley Thornton was born as a result of the high-profile Roe v. Wade case, which at one time split the United States into two camps – “for” and “against” abortion. Her mother wanted to get rid of the child, but Shelly survived and now tells her story.
Today in the US, another round of disputes, demonstrations and litigation over women’s rights to abortion. The conservative states of Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Iowa, Kentucky and Missouri are joined by Texas: abortion is prohibited here from six weeks, when the fetus’s heartbeat is recorded.
Abortion has been legal in America since 1973, when the Supreme Court ruled in Roe v. Wade. A woman under the pseudonym “Jane Roe” was suing Texas District Attorney Henry Wade for her right to terminate the pregnancy. As a result, such a right was received not only by the plaintiff, but by all American women. True, while the proceedings were going on, the child whom Jane Roe wanted to abort was born and was given up for adoption.
More than 50 years later, her lost daughter, known as Rowe’s child, spoke up and spoke about her feelings. We publish quotes from her interview and the story of the difficult relationship of an unwanted child with a biological mother.
Roe v. Wade
In June 1969, 21-year-old Texas resident Norma McCorvey discovered she was pregnant with her third child. The other two were given up for adoption: the eldest daughter was raised by Norma’s mother, the middle daughter was raised by strangers. McCorvey planned to terminate the pregnancy. Returning to Texas, she stated that she had been raped – in this case, the law gave the right to an operation, but Norma could not prove the fact of the crime. It was not possible to make an underground abortion.
In the end, she was referred to lawyers Linda Coffee and Sarah Weddington, who decided to set a precedent and at 1970, on behalf of Norma McCorvey, designating her by the pseudonym “Jane Roe”, filed a lawsuit in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas to recognize the constitutional right of a woman to have an abortion. The defendant in the case was Dallas County District Attorney Henry Wade, which is how the case became known as Roe v. Wade. At the same time, Norma herself never appeared in court, leaving work for lawyers. She gave her daughter through an adoption lawyer to another family.
After lengthy litigation at various levels, Roe v. Wade reached the Supreme Court. At 19In 73, he ruled in favor of the plaintiff, acknowledging that the Texas ban on abortion is unconstitutional. It was after this that the pro-life and pro-choice movements appeared and took shape in the United States.
The Mysteries of Norma McCorvey’s Fate

“Secrets and lies are the worst things in the world,” says Shelley Lynn Thornton of her life. She is 51 years old, and she is the same “Rowe’s child” who caused a fierce dispute that split the United States into two irreconcilable camps.
She was born by a woman who planned to have an abortion when she was 18. It took several more decades to talk about it publicly. In September 2021, Shelley gave two interviews – to The Atlantic and ABC. Shelley admitted that she was never able to forgive her biological mother.
After Roe v. Wade was won, Norma McCorvey came out of anonymity. She willingly gave interviews, participated in various events, and until her death in 2017 she was a famous person in America. Many who knew Norma personally called her “maladapted”. Born into a poor family, she suffered from the attacks of an alcoholic mother as a child and allegedly (it was not possible to confirm this fact) was systematically sexually abused at an early age by one of her relatives.
At the age of 16, Norma got married and gave birth to her eldest daughter, Melissa, but she was unable to raise her – the child was taken by her grandmother. Soon there was another pregnancy and childbirth, daughter Jennifer was given up for adoption.
Norma McCorvey had problems with alcohol and drugs and was never able to start a family. At first, Norma actively participated in various actions of pro-chaserers, but ten years after the trial, she made a sharp turn: she moved to the camp of pro-lifers, and then, in the middle of 90s, was baptized by evangelists (the ceremony was even filmed for television), after which she allegedly converted to Catholicism.
At the same time, Norma started looking for her third daughter. The fact that she wants to find a girl, McCorvey said on national television.
Journalists from the tabloid National Inquirer volunteered to help her in the hope that the high-profile reunion story would significantly increase the publication’s popularity.
“Now they will hate me and accuse me of legalizing abortion”

When Shelley Thornton was 18 years old, two strangers approached her on the street. Now she says that these people literally jumped out at her from around the corner, as if they had been watching for a long time and were just waiting for the right moment. It turned out they were National Inquirer reporters. “Are you Shelly?” they asked the girl and added: “We were looking for you.”
“They said my real mother was Norma McCorvey and asked if I had ever heard of her,” Shelley recalls. By that time, she already understood that she was an adopted child. When asked about biological parents, the adoptive parents did not really answer anything. Shelly knew that her two half-sisters were living somewhere, but she had no information about her mother, and even more so about her father. Shelly’s childhood was quite happy up to this point, full of gifts, adventures and love.
The reporters explained to the girl: her mother is the same Jane Rowe, because of whom abortion was legalized in the USA 18 years ago. “That is, you are“ Rowe’s child, ”the journalists specified.
Shelly understood this phrase very well, as well as what could follow it. “It was a shock. I thought, God, I will now be hated and accused of legalizing abortion. I was completely smitten by this news.”
The “touching reunion” planned by journalists did not take place

When Shelley voiced the information received at home, her adoptive mother Ruth (the adoptive father had left the family at that time) was also shocked. She remembered the name of the adoption lawyer who helped her adopt Shelley into the family, she remembered some details, but it never occurred to her that Shelley’s mother was SUCH a woman.
The attitude towards the Norm itself in American society was ambiguous. Her eldest daughter Melissa, who was closest to her mother, later recalled that Norma could easily be booed on the street, called a murderer and even Satan. Once, unknown people fired at the windows of her apartment and put several bullets into a car parked nearby.
Shelly and Ruth decided to meet with reporters from the National Inquirer, who suggested that Shelly take a DNA test and persuaded her to meet with Norma McCorvey in every possible way. But most of all they were worried about the answer to the question – is Shelley herself for or against abortion? She flared up and refused further communication.
Shelly got on the phone with her birth mother: Norma briefly told her daughter about her father and sisters, but the proposal for a meeting and a “touching reunion” was categorically refused.
“I quickly realized that the only reason she was trying to find me and get close is because my mother plans to use me for her own image and publicity,” Shelley commented on her refusal in a recent interview with ABC.
Together with her adoptive mother and the lawyer hired by the family, Shelley worked hard to keep her name and other personal information from being published in the press. In the semi-anonymous article, Shelley was presented as a pro-chaser, although this was not true. In the United States, the struggle between the two groups is often fought with the help of very radical methods, and Shelley simply did not want to be “classified as a religious fanatic.” She admitted that she herself was rather against abortion, but did not want to join the struggle, much less become the banner and symbol of any of the parties.
“Be thankful I didn’t kill you then”
Shelley Thornton said in an interview that her biological mother “didn’t deserve” to meet her. Screenshot from the ABC film
After the publication of Shelley Thornton, it became clear that it was no longer possible to live as before. She worried that the story of her birth would become known and be hated by all of America. “I hid this information from everyone for a long time. It was hard, too much weight. It has always been difficult for me to build relationships with people, I constantly thought – what will they think of me?
After a while, another tabloid reporter showed up at Shelly’s doorstep. She admitted that through complex moves she obtained the address of “Rowe’s child”, and tried to persuade the girl to a frank interview. The journalist literally attacked Shelley, sending flowers and gifts. In her notes, the sensation hunter wrote that Shelley was “part of American history,” and therefore did not belong to herself, but should appear before the public.
Norma McCorvey, meanwhile, did not give up her attempts to get closer to her daughter.
Shelley recalls that from time to time her mother called her on the phone, they talked, but something did not work out. In the heat of one of the quarrels, Norma screamed: “Yes, you should be grateful to me that I didn’t have an abortion then!”
“I thought: What?! Should I thank you for not killing me and then giving me up for adoption? Shelley says today. “And I told her that I would never, ever thank her for that.”
In response, Norma hung up.
When Shelly was in her early 20s, she met her future husband, Doug. For the first time, she revealed her, as it seemed to her, “shameful” secret to him, but the man only shrugged his shoulders – they say, whatever happens, I love you, that’s all. They got married and had a son and two daughters.
During her first pregnancy, which occurred even before the official marriage, Shelly at some point hesitated whether to keep the child, but stopped in time and decided that she would never take such a step. As a result, her marriage developed quite happily.
Meeting of the three sisters
Shelly with her sister Jennifer. Screenshot from the ABC film
Over the next few decades, Norma McCorvey continued to appear in the media for various reasons, turning into a kind of scandalous star, who is ready to be invited to their events and actions by everyone interested in cheap popularity. Norma was a frequent guest on various talk shows, with the help of journalists she wrote two books – an autobiography “I am Row” and non-fiction “Winning with Love” – a story about her religious experience. Shelley at this time diligently tried to exclude the biological mother from her life. When they said “Row” from the TV screen, she changed the channel, flipped through the pages in magazines.
“For years I ignored this problem. But it has not disappeared anywhere, on the contrary, it is becoming more and more. Now all I can do is finally meet her face to face,” the grown-up Shelley says of her decision to step out into the public field. She first thought about dealing with this story in the 2000s, and only 13 years later, in 2013, at the age of over 40, she met her older sisters, Melissa and Jennifer. The three sisters became friends and now maintain a warm relationship.
Norma spent her last years in the care of her eldest daughter. Shortly before her death, McCorvey gave her last, alas, again scandalous interview, where she admitted that her participation in pro-life actions and a change in views on abortion were bought: allegedly she was paid several times by large organizations that advocate for life: the amount could reach about half a million dollars .
Shelley was shocked again. She found no remorse for the past in her mother. And when her older sister told her that Norma McCorvey was dying, Shelly did not come to say goodbye. Norma passed away in 2017 from heart failure. They never met Shelly in their entire lives.
Four years after Norma McCorvey left, Shelley finally decided to give an interview.
– Have you forgiven your mother? Lindsay Davis, an ABC sea otter journalist, asked her.
– No. And I will never forgive. There are many reasons for that. The main thing is that even after so many years, she wanted not only to see me, but to make some kind of show out of it.
Shelley does not regret her decision to never see her biological mother. “She never expressed her feelings for me or said even simple words of regret about the past.”
In the US, the debate around abortion is still going on. And so far, both sides in their arguments are trying to refer to the history of “Roe vs. Wade.” However, today the truth about this story has become known, the tragic truth about a mother and daughter who never saw and fell in love with each other.
