IRSC Child Development Center – Indian River State College

IRSC operates a full-service center for early childhood education at its Main Campus
in Fort Pierce. The Center is staffed by well-qualified and experienced teachers,
as well as IRSC students in the Early Childhood Education program, and offers a developmentally appropriate learning environment year around.

The Center is open to students, staff and community families looking for a quality
experience for their children who are three months to four years of age.   Florida’s
Voluntary Prekindergarten Education (VPK) program for eligible four-year-olds is offered
during the morning.

Operation of the IRSC Child Development Center meets the requirements of the Child
Care Guidance, Services and Management program as specified by the Vocational Division,
Florida State Department of Education. The school meets all state and local regulations
concerning the operation of a child care facility and serves as a model for child
care centers.

The infant and toddler program serves our youngest students, ages three months to
three years. The curriculum, toys, daily schedule, food, as well as all aspects of
your child’s environment, is planned to best support the physical, emotional, behavioral
and mental growth of your child.

The preschool program provides care and education for children who are age three or
four by September 1 of the school year, and who are toilet trained and able to work
well in a preschool group setting of 15-18 children. Children are introduced to a
balanced program of interaction with friends in both teacher-directed and child-directed
experiences. The daily schedule includes free choice of time spent in the learning
center and group times for creative movement, music, storytelling and dramatization.
Walking trips on Main Campus and on-site presentations are also part of the experience.
The child-centered preschool program is based upon the belief that play is the best
way for children to learn. Each classroom is organized with areas for creative art,
dramatic play, blocks, math, science, literacy and cognitive and small-motor development,
and the environment is designed to stimulate imagination and creativity, socialization,
exploration and discovery.

Children participating in the Florida Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten program are required
to attend the IRSC Child Development Center on a daily basis from 8:30 until 11:30
a.m. At the end of each month, VPK parents must complete a Parent Attendance Verification
form. If a student is absent from the VPK program for five consecutive instructional
days, the student is considered withdrawn from the program unless written documentation
is provided by the parent or guardian describing the circumstances.

Enrollment

To apply for admission, a completed Request for Enrollment Application must be submitted to the IRSC Child Development Center Office. Once the completed
application is received, the child or children will be placed on the waiting list.

The wait list is usually long—especially for the infant and toddler program—so it
is important to apply as early as possible. The average wait time for enrollment depends
upon present class enrollment, the parent’s classification (student, faculty/staff
or community), the age of the child or due date, and the date the application is received.

A $150 dollar non-refundable enrollment fee is charged upon acceptance to the program.

Tuition

The IRSC Child Development Center offers several options for the hours of daily care
you are seeking for your child. Tuition covers ordinary operating expenses in the
Center, including food and education materials provided for the child, and staff salaries.
Tuition is expected for all days of operation. Tuition is not charged for the days
that the College is officially closed.

The “school day” is defined as 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and is covered by regular tuition.

• “Before Care” is offered from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. and is an additional $15.00 per week.
• “After Care” is offered from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. for an additional charge of $30.00
  per week.

Tuition may be paid weekly or monthly. Monthly tuition is due on the first day of
the month. Weekly tuition is due on the first day of the school week. If payment has
not been received by close of business the first day, the account will be forwarded
to the business office on the following business day. No child will be accepted if
tuition is not up to date. Payment of tuition can be taken at the Child Development
Center on Mondays or the first day of the month. Otherwise, payment should be made
to the Cashier’s Office in W-building.

Staff

The IRSC Child Development Center is under the direction of the Center Director and
is staffed with trained early childhood instructors with degrees and/or certifications
as required by the Florida Department of Education and the Department of Children
and Families. The staff ratio follows Children and Families directives. Additionally,
staff is required to participate in annual educational retraining.

IRSC student interns work with the Center as part of their internship. Other Early
Childhood Education program students may be involved in observation and participation
as required by course objectives. Work-study students will be utilized as available
and according to their capabilities in the Center operation.

Child Development Center Hours

The Center is open 7:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday during Fall and
Spring semesters. Classroom instruction occurs between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. There
is no provision for pick-up after 5:30 p.m.

All holidays observed by IRSC are observed by the Center.

What prompted you to accept a job offer at the Zvezda Leadership School?

All my active conscious life is connected with various educational programs and projects for young people. I hosted regional forums, hosted social engineering programs, acted as a trainer and expert in personal development.

For the last four years he headed the committee on youth policy of the Tomsk region and was involved in the implementation of educational programs in the region. At a certain moment, the realization came to me that I needed to develop further, and I moved to an educational center so that children of all ages could receive trans-professional competencies.

Children’s education: what should it be like today?

The environment and, of course, the activities of teachers should be aimed at the development of the child and motivate his cognitive processes. For a student, not only a consumer assessment of the situation is important, but also the opportunity to explore and discover the world. The child should not be afraid to make mistakes and ask questions. To interest the student, it is necessary to demonstrate to him what a real and useful result he will receive at the end of the training.

I have learned from my own experience that it is not necessary to create an environment where the child needs to sit still, be silent and be afraid to make a mistake. Together with the students, you can come up with and maintain your own rules of conduct. Invite the children to organize the space themselves – arrange tables and chairs, or maybe it will be more convenient for them to stand rather than sit.

Physical activity should not be prohibited. On the contrary, it must be skillfully used in educational activities. The most important thing, in our opinion, in education is that it is impossible to “overhear” skills; in order to turn knowledge into skills, it is necessary to provide practical classes for children already in childhood, and therefore our school is practice-oriented.

How should a children’s center be organized?

First of all, the center is not a frozen structure. Have the students post their projects and the results of their work on the walls. Tables, chairs, a soft zone should be mobile and move in the way that is convenient and desirable for children. It’s good if you can do outdoor activities. You can collect a small library where the guys can borrow books that interest them.

The teacher and the student should not be separated either spatially (a teacher’s table, chair, etc.) or meaningfully – the teacher is a tutor, a mentor who helps the student in independent study of the world around him. The most important thing is that the teacher understands the values ​​and needs of students and builds the educational process with this in mind. The main task of the teacher is to inspire young people, push them to self-improvement.

The technological equipment of the Center should become a logical continuation of the educational process. It is necessary that the student, on the basis of ready-made information blocks, could create his own educational trajectory. We, as teachers, understand that it is necessary to organize a convenient and understandable navigation system that adapts to each child, taking into account his characteristics and preferences. We offer a format of an individual trajectory in a digital educational environment that collects a student’s educational profile and a map of his achievements.

It is good to shift the emphasis in teaching activities from the teacher to the student. To this end, we use non-standard scenarios for classes. In my opinion, it is better to focus on the individualization of work and the ability to cooperate and negotiate within the team.

What are the features of the children’s development center?

Our center is focused on the formation of behavior patterns through practical activities.

Each student has their own program, which takes into account age characteristics and needs. There are programs aimed at preschool or psychological development, as well as the development of children’s activities. Programs are divided into long (9- 14 months) and short (from 1 to 2 months).

I want to draw your attention to the fact that any student should develop communication skills: connected constructive speech, a clear presentation of thoughts, active listening, presentation. In the future, it is already possible to move on to the following supra-professional competencies.

In our work, we focus on the fact that it is extremely important to teach children to adapt to change and manage multiple tasks. In today’s technological and rapidly changing world, the ability to find new technologies and adapt to changing conditions at work or in your business is important.

The development of creativity, the ability to analyze situations, perspective vision, the ability to find information and available resources for the implementation of projects – all this allows our students to achieve success regardless of their field of activity and interests, be it programming or entrepreneurship.

We have been developing our center for several years, changed the format and directions of work three times, mastered a lot of methodological material and scored a lot of bumps. The team that created the children’s center has worked in the field of education and youth policy for many years.

Why did you decide to develop by franchising?

In the second year of our development, we began to receive applications from different cities for the purchase of a franchise. At first we refused, because. we did not plan to develop the direction, but soon realized that our experience is unique and in great demand.

We have now packaged our materials into a small business franchise and provide partners with training and full support throughout the partnership.

In fact, we help to open a ready-made business. The business idea is decomposed into a business plan and step-by-step instructions for launching and implementing a children’s center with all methodological, marketing, legal and management documents, as well as IT support.

You develop soft skills in children. Why is this important today?

Many authoritative people – Anthony Robbins, Brian Tracy, German Gref, Radislav Gandapas, Igor Mann, as well as our team have come to the conclusion that 80% of success in life and work is achieved thanks to soft skills – a complex of non-specialized, important for a career over-professional skills that are responsible for successful participation in the work process, high productivity and are cross-cutting, that is, not related to a specific subject area.

Cross-professional skills include: effective communication, the ability to work in a team, communicate with people and manage conflict situations. It also includes: project management, emotional intelligence, critical thinking and more.

I want to note that such competencies help people find the best solutions for a wide range of tasks in a variety of unexpected situations. As a rule, a specialist or entrepreneur applies similar knowledge in most of the working time.

It is difficult to acquire transprofessional abilities from a lecture or watching a video. They are formed only in the process of activity.
