Halia S.

Halia is so wonderful! Incredibly professional. I felt so comfortable leaving my kids under her care. She fed my kids lunch, followed our nap time routine, and did arts and crafts with them. When I got home they couldn’t stop talking about what a great time they had with her! I love how intentionalshe was. She really treats babysitting as a job versus just sticking them in front of the TV. Which any parent can appreciate! We can’t wait to have her back!!. ..

Hello parents! My name’s Renee. I am a high school graduate and a college student majoring in Education. I’m CPR certified with 8 experience and I’ve worked with all ages (0-13 years old). I grew up & wasraised around young children since I was 5 years old. My mom worked in the nursery at our church, and I enjoyed seeing them learn day by day. After elementary school I volunteered my 8th grade year with my second grade teacher and also in the special needs classroom, because I was home schooled. It was a great learning experience for me and also gave me some experience with school age children. There’s a daycare there and I worked with the children everyday. I’ve been on Care since August 2012, since I was a freshman in high school. If you have any questions or would like an interview, message me and I will get back to you as soon as possible! Child Care FAQs

The national typical hourly rate in 2022 is $20. 00 per hour for nannies and $17.50 for babysitters. Rates can vary based on the child care provider’s experience, certifications, employment status, and travel expenses. When calculating the cost of child care, you should also account for the number of children they’ll care for and additional responsibilities like household tasks or homework help. Learn more about how to set competitive rates for attracting the best babysitters.

The best way to find child care near you is to post a job detailing your needs on Sittercity, which will be shared with our community of available babysitters and nannies. We’ll notify you when child care providers apply to your job, and from there you can proceed with interviews, background checks, and reference checks so you can find the perfect fit for your family.

You can find experienced and passionate child care providers near you to provide the best care for your child, either in-home or virtually. Child care providers can help families with managing strict schedules, transportation to activities, homework help, last-minute coverage, date nights, and more. Whether you’re looking for full-time, part-time, live-in, or temporary care, you can count on Sittercity for finding passionate and experienced child care providers.

Families find trustworthy child care providers on Sittercity who are passionate about providing safe and enriching care for their children. Many providers report they are First Aid and CPR certified to provide the best care for your family. Babysitters and nannies have the option to complete regular background checks, and you can easily request a recent background check if they don’t have one or it is not recent. Families can also request to see professional references!

Our dedicated team also champions safety across our platform every day. Child care providers go through an identity verification process Berbix when registering an account. Some additional safety measures include Family Watchdog screening, babysitter and nanny reviews, and secure messaging.

Nannies and babysitters share the same primary responsibility of providing safe and enriching care for your child, but there are a few differences between them. Nannies are more commonly associated with regular work, whether full or part-time, offering daily or consistent care to a particular family. There are also several different types of nannies, including au pairs, house managers, doulas, live-in, and overnight nannies.

Babysitters, on the other hand, are typically hired for irregular or occasional work, either full or part-time. If you’re looking for last-minute care for date night, or the occasional few hours after school, a babysitter is a great best option.

Identifying the type and frequency of child care you’ll need is the best way to decide whether a babysitter or nanny is a better fit for your family.

Child care providers on Sittercity love providing enriching experiences for your children, and sharing their passions with them. They’re happy to participate in outdoor activities like sports, or indoor activities like music, baking, tutoring help, and art. Wherever your child’s interests lie, child care providers on Sittercity can engage them in a nurturing way.

Top 25 Things to Do in Jacksonville, Florida / Travel Guides

Jacksonville is in a very interesting geographic location in northeast Florida where the St. Johns River meets the Atlantic Ocean.
As you can imagine, water sports are very popular here among the Jacksonville beach communities along the adjacent Atlantic coast. From swimming and surfing at nearby Barrier Island beaches like Neptune Beach and Jacksonville, there are plenty of opportunities.
If you’re looking for something a little more land-based, you’ll be pleased to know that the city is proud of its golf courses, including the famous Ponte Vedra Beach TPC Sawgrass, headquarters of the PGA Tour. There are also many museums and cultural offerings to keep you and the approximately 1 million residents here!
Let’s take a look at best things in Jacksonville :

1. Cummer Art and Garden Museum

Source: flickr
Cummer Art and Garden Museum
Housed in a series of twentieth-century buildings, the Cummer Museum opens onto the St. Florida’s active waterway. This is a fabulous museum for children that tries to teach them to appreciate art! There is a large section of the museum dedicated to interactive displays that allows parents and children to explore and understand how art has changed over time.
The collection is particularly strong in American and European paintings and includes over six thousand works of art dating from 2100 BC to the twenty-first century. The museum also has three flower gardens, the oldest of which dates back to 1903. Beautiful all year round, especially in the spring when the orchid exhibition is shown. !

2. Catty Shack Ranch Sanctuary

Source: flickr
Catty Shack Ranch Sanctuary
The sanctuary is an excellent place for the care and rehabilitation of feral cats. Most importantly, once an animal is adopted, it is guaranteed to have a loving home forever as Sanctuary does not breed or sell any of its animals..
Children in particular will enjoy “meeting” residents ranging from tigers, lions, leopards, bobcats and cougars. Try, if possible, to stop by to witness the night feeding which starts with a guided tour followed by a feeding in which the keepers go to hand first to feed these magnificent animals!
It is obvious how much the volunteers love their work and all the animals, each assistant is ready to answer all your questions. Mandatory for all ages. The sanctuary has a snack bar and portable toilets..

3. Museum of Science and History

Source: flickr
Museum of Science and History
A must for the whole family and especially for your children who are interested in science and history as the museum specializes in exhibitions of science and local history. It features the main exhibition, which changes quarterly, as well as three floors of permanent exhibitions, including the Brian-Gooding Planetarium.
Museum exhibits tell all about the human body, the history of Jacksonville, how water works, and stunningly showcase the Great Fire of 1901, which was one of the worst disasters in Florida history, burning 146 city blocks and destroying more than 2,368 buildings in eight hours.

4. Fountain of Friendship

Source: unadmissions
Fountain of Friendship
After visiting the Museum of Science and History, I hope you will have time to walk around the neighborhood to see the Fountain of Friendship. Built in the 1960s, it has over 60 jets that shoot water up to 120 feet!
In particular, it is a wonderful sight at night, as the fountain lights up with colorful lights, creating a beautiful show. The park surrounding the fountain has enough picnic tables and benches to make it a nice snack or picnic for you and your family..

5. Riverside / Avondale Historic District

Source: flickr

For a real down south feel, you’ll want to visit Riverside, one of Jacksonville’s oldest neighborhoods. To prove my point, it is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In the northeast of Florida, almost on the Atlantic coast, is the city of Jacksonville. It could be (and in part is) the most popular city in the state due to its amazing Old Town, a prime location on the banks of the St. John River, beautiful waterfronts, an abundance of museums and parks. But in fact it is a city of “blue collars”, hard workers and hard workers.

Visit the Riverside Art Market, on Riverside Street, under the arch of the Fuller Warren Bridge. The market is considered the most important cultural and entertainment event of the city, which takes place in the open.

Getting to Jacksonville

The city is served by an international airport located about 23 km north of the city centre. It receives flights from many American cities, including Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, New York, Washington and Philadelphia. You can also get to Jacksonville by train, for example, from New York (Silver Star and Silver Meteor lines) or Miami.

A bit of history

Local fertile places were inhabited, according to archeology, 6 thousand years ago. Europeans landed here in the middle of the 16th century, and Fort Caroline became their first settlement. Later, when Florida was ceded to the USA in the first half of 19century, the city was named after Governor and later President Andrew Jackson. In the Revolutionary War, it was the meat from Jacksonville that the Confederate troops could count on, and the city was repeatedly captured by either the “blues” or the “grays”. In the years that followed, Jacksonville became a fashionable resort for those who made their money from the war. In 1901, a monstrous fire broke out in the city, in which both the City and many residential buildings disappeared. The restoration took 10 years.

It is not clear why, but a lot of serious crimes are committed in the blessed and wonderful Jacksonville. At the turn of the millennium, the city had already led the way in terms of homicides for a dozen years.

Jacksonville Attractions and Attractions

The Landing is a shopping district in Downtown, famous for its vibrant nightlife. Many festivals and other events take place here throughout the year. The Landing is full of waterfront restaurants, nightclubs and unique shops. Most of the fun here is observed on New Year’s holidays and the night before the annual game between the football teams of the universities of Georgia and Florida. During the holidays, it is in the Landing that fireworks are launched, and for Christmas, the largest Christmas tree in northeast Florida is set up here.

Another notable city block is Hemming Plaza. This is a park in the city center, flanked by the City Hall, the City Court, the Museum of Modern Art, the Public Library, the former Snyder Memorial Church, and many restaurants. Worth a visit is City Hall, a restored former general store built in 1912 in the prairie style by famed local architect Henry J. Kluto. Inside you can see a large sunny atrium. And the library building, the largest in the state, was built in a postmodern style by Robert Stern and has a cozy patio for outdoor reading.

Fort Caroline National Memorial is the very first French fort that was destroyed by Spanish soldiers from St. Augustine. Now there is a museum dedicated to the first French settlement in the area. The fortress itself is small and rather modest, but the hilly area around is great for hiking.

The Cummer Art Museum and Gardens are located on Riverside Avenue. Here you can see the ever-expanding expositions of the art gallery and take a walk in the well-groomed garden area right by the water. The Maritime Museum displays ship models, drawings and photographs, and artefacts dating back as far as 1562. And the Museum of Modern Art, housed in the historic Western Union Telegraph Building, houses works by state, national and international artists. foreign authors. In addition, art lovers may be interested in the gallery of the University of North Florida, which hosts several exhibitions of works by US artists and art students every year.

Well, if you are interested in not only contemplation – visit the Riverside Art Market, which is on the street of the same name, under the arch of the Fuller Warren Bridge. The market is open on Saturdays, from April to December, and here you can buy not only handmade paintings and gizmos, but also farm products, as well as participate in mass entertainment. The market is considered the most important cultural and entertainment event of the city, which takes place in the open.

The historic outskirts of Jacksonville are no less interesting in their own way than the city center. Riverside is located south of downtown on the banks of the river. He built up at 1910-1930, and many old houses, churches and tenement houses have been preserved here. Riverside has its own bohemian-inspired commercial center, Five Points, and a memorial park next to it, which houses a statue of the winged Nike in memory of those killed in the First World War.

Another scenic outskirt, Avondale, begins beyond Riverside as you move further southwest. It was built up in the 1920s, during the land boom. The developments mix a wide variety of architectural styles, including Tudor, Prairie, Georgian and Mediterranean Revival styles and bungalows. Jacksonville Events

In addition to the famous market, Jacksonville hosts the Jazz and Blues Festival, Florida’s largest outdoor festival. The city also has its own film festival, and the city’s public library holds a book festival. In July, the six-day Kingfish Fishing Festival takes place, with a prize fund of half a million USD: about 1,000 boats take part in it.

Especially special is the Eight Flags Shrimp Festival, which takes place on Fernandina Beach on Amelia Island. It’s about 90 miles from Jacksonville, but this annual summer event is fun and colorful, centered around a hilarious pirate invasion that terrorizes the locals. At the festival, the most drunken pirate is awarded, who manages to rob the most, and the well-known Miss Wet T-shirt contest is also held here.

Jacksonville area

Amelia Island is very beautiful and can be reached in about an hour’s drive. Tourists admire here the houses climbing the rocks and the plantation. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the island was a pirate base from which raids were made on Spanish ships. Since then, it has received the name “Eight Flags Island”: this is the only place in the United States that has been ruled by eight different powers.

Also of interest is a visit to Kingsley Plantation, the original southern plantation, well preserved.

St. Augustine was founded by Spanish colonists in 1565 and claims to be the oldest permanent settlement in the country. It is located about 45 minutes drive from Jacksonville to the south. Here you can find many tourist views: in particular, old mansions built by Spanish and British craftsmen. Other must-see sights in St. Augustine are the military fort, the Flagler Museum, St. George’s Street, the lighthouse, and the Lion’s Bridge.

Five miles from St. Augustine is Ottis Castle, modeled after millennial Irish castles. It is clearly visible from the A1A highway and is illuminated by beautiful blue lights in the evenings.

How people live in Jacksonville

Jacksonville is the largest city in the state of Florida with a population of 0.9 million people, 1.6 million live in the agglomeration, Jacksonville can equal a city like San Francisco or Indianapolis in terms of its population, the only difference is – this is not a very large suburb of Jacksonville, usually in American cities in the suburbs there are several times more population than within the city limits. Jacksonville is located 550 kilometers north of Miami, boasts very modest beaches of the Atlantic Ocean and the St. Johns, today there is a major US military and civilian deep water port. The local economy relies on banking, insurance, healthcare and logistics. Of particular interest is tourism, there are a large number of golf courses in Jacksonville, this is the best region for golfers not only in the USA, but maybe in the whole world, nevertheless, I would like to immediately note that Jacksonville is a place that has suffered an economic collapse and is located in the most deplorable state.

Natural and climatic conditions, weather Jacksonville

Jacksonville has a humid subtropical climate, humid hot summers and mild winters, throughout the year daytime temperatures can vary from 18 to 33 degrees Celsius, in summer daytime temperatures in the shade can exceed 40 degrees , in winter during the day, as a rule, something around 10 degrees Celsius. Jacksonville is the safest city in Florida in terms of the threat from hurricanes, although back in 1871 Jacksonville was completely destroyed by natural disasters, but since then wooden houses have not been built here anymore. Nothing threatens modern buildings made of concrete and glass, except for natural desolation and the absence of inhabitants, if you are really afraid of hurricanes. As a rule, storms begin at the end of summer and continue throughout autumn, the rainiest months of the year are from June to September.

Advantages and disadvantages, advantages, pros and cons of living in Jacksonville, reviews.

Jacksonville at first glance may seem like a very boring city, despite the large number of parks that are stated in official materials, you can only walk along the embankment of the St. the bridge is the most beautiful place in the city, which offers a view of the outlandish semi-skyscrapers of downtown, the business center of the city is just a couple of modern buildings, you should not think that this is some kind of Manhattan. There are no beaches in Jacksonville, not at all, it’s not a resort place.

Many readers will be surprised to learn about such a town, the word Jacksonville will not say anything at all to many, all the more it will be a big revelation that it is the capital and largest city of Florida.

Where is it better to live in Jacksonville, rent an apartment, districts

Today Jacksonville is in ruins, it is a real ghost town by analogy with Detroit, there are no good areas in Jacksonville, downtown and historical areas that are crowded with people without a fixed place of residence cannot be considered as such who are attracted by local abandoned real estate. Those who stayed in the city live in the suburbs in private houses, many of them go to offices in downtown, only there and back, just walking around the city is dangerous, and there is nothing to do. Almost everything here is abandoned.

Salaries, income and work Jacksonville. The median and minimum wages are

The median income for a household in Jacksonville is $48,829 per year and the median income for a family is 59,272. Males have a median income of 42,485 versus 34,209 for females. The per capita income in Jacksonville is 25,227. About 10.5% of families and 14.3% of the population are below the poverty line.

Work in Jacksonville. Economy and Business in Jacksonville

The economy of Jacksonville is defined by the fact that it has the largest deep water port on the East Coast of the United States, and the economy of the region is highly diversified, but dominated by areas such as financial services, biomedical technology, consumer goods, information services, industrial .

Jacksonville is a rail, air and highway entry hub from Jacksonville International Airport, ship repair yards and extensive handling facilities.

Just don’t think that Jacksonville is exclusively a town where only hard workers and the military live, there are excellent museums, parks for recreation, theaters, zoos and gardens, shopping centers and historical architecture, including buildings from the golden era of the 1920s, and these are streets made in art deco and art nouveau style. For example, in Jacksonville there is the largest system of city parks in the United States, which occupy 320 square kilometers, Hemming Plaza Park is the oldest park in the city, which is located in the vicinity of old government buildings and palaces, but this is on paper, in reality Jacksonville is in deplorable condition, and many of these government palaces are falling apart and are home to the homeless.

Tourism in Jacksonville

Up to 3 million tourists visit Jacksonville each year, generating $1. 6 billion in revenue for the city, yet it can be said that this is a relatively low figure, given the resort status of Jacksonville, the famous gem of Miami hosts an order of magnitude greater number of tourists, but it is worth noting that the tourism sector still occupies 10% of all the city’s workers. If Jacksonville tourism generates 1.6 billion dollars a year, then the presence of naval bases brings 6.1 billion dollars a year, these figures can easily be seen that the city has more of a military, administrative and industrial orientation, people work here rather, what to relax or have fun.

9.2% of the population of Jacksonville is of foreign origin, 49.6% of them are naturalized US citizens, this is one of the lowest rates, which indicates the low attractiveness of the city as a place to live. Of foreign-born residents, 38.0% were born in Latin America, 35.7% were born in Asia, 17.9% were born in Europe, 5.9% were born in Africa, 1.9% in North America, and 0 .5% were born in Oceania.

87.1% of the city’s population speaks English at home, which is very high, only 5. 8% of the population speaks Spanish at home, 3.3% speaks other Indo-European languages, 2.9% in Asian or Pacific Islander languages, 12.9% in another language other than English.

Spanish 4.13%, Tagalog 1.00%, French 0.47%, Arabic 0.44%, German 0.43%, Vietnamese 0.31%, Russian 0.21%, Italian 0.17 % of the population.

Protestants are the largest religious group.

Russians or Ukrainians in Jacksonville, maybe there are a couple of people who, by the will of fate, were abandoned here.

Level and quality of life in Jacksonville, ghost town.

Jacksonville is the poorest and most depressing city in the US with a population of under one million, comparable only to Detroit and other ghost towns. If you open Wikipedia and other cold statistical sources, you will read that there is a lot of things in Jacksonville, this is a port, industrial enterprises, offices of large international companies, nuclear power plants and the like, however, when you get into the city, all this information is crossed out. In downtown, every second building is abandoned and destroyed, this is the place of residence of people, so to speak, without a fixed place of residence. Coming out to the central streets of the city on weekends, you will see only homeless people and athletes. Outside of a very small downtown, green areas begin, it is felt that life was once in full swing here, but now it is completely gone, what happened to Jacksonville, apparently the last straw or nail was the 2008 crisis that killed the city completely, revitalization is so and didn’t happen. There is no need to talk about the level and quality of life, we can only state that in prosperous America there are abandoned cities in complete ruin.

Crime and Safety in Jacksonville

Jacksonville has the highest crime rate among Florida cities.

Houses, apartments and real estate Jacksonville

Jacksonville has its own downtown, which is beautifully reflected in the waters, the tallest building is the Bank of America, built in 1990, and has a height of 188 meters or 42 floors, however, behind this skyscraper in the shade one can see abandoned buildings, including historical ones, which only with their dilapidated appearance remind of the glorious times that have long gone and it is not clear when they will return. Jacksonville has the cheapest staleness among major US cities, people are deterred by high crime and the generally dubious pleasure of living here.

Despite the many dysfunctional abandoned areas, by the way, including downtown, Jacksonville is a clean and tidy city, anyway – it’s the USA, not Africa or Lenin’s America, at least Jacksonville looks neater than Kyiv or Moscow, maybe due to the fact that there is no one to litter here, prosperous people moved to a few suburbs.

Jacksonville is a city located in the northeast of one of the US states, namely Florida. The city occupies a vast territory, almost 2300 square km. This means that Jacksonville is the largest settlement in the United States on the continent, if you consider the area, only a few settlements in Alaska, due to the large geographical expanse, can surpass it in area. The population of Jacksonville is about 821 thousand people. The urban agglomeration of Jacksonville has more than 1,300 thousand people. As of the end of 2010, Jacksonville was one of the ten fastest growing cities in the US.

The name Jacksonville was given to the city in honor of Jackson Andrew (Jackson Andrew), who was the governor of Florida, and after the seventh president of the United States. A well-known abbreviated name for the city is Jax.

Jacksonville City Map

Jacksonville’s Main Street Bridge is one of the city’s landmarks.

The land where Jacksonville is now located was discovered by Spanish settlers in 1513, but was virtually deserted until the arrival of the French, who founded Fort Caroline in 1564. Which was soon destroyed by the Spaniards, who seized control of these lands. Ultimately, after a short reign of the British in this territory, these lands were given to the United States. By 1859Jacksonville was proclaimed a city and had the largest port in Florida, which was a center for shipping timber and cotton.

The city of Jacksonville developed as the industrial center of the region because it was located on a navigable river and near the ocean. This port is the largest in the south and the second largest in the east of the United States. A balanced and well-thought-out economic policy that relies on industry, financial transactions, biological medicine, information services, ship repair and port industries, and tourism. The largest source of jobs here is the military, which has several large bases here. For example, to the north of Jacksonville there is a large military base Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, which is based on submarines containing ballistic missiles on their sides. 20 km from the city near the St. Johns River is the strategic base Naval Station Mayport, which is based on the fourth US Fleet. It is known that the region’s economy receives from the paramilitary bases in Jacksonville about 6 billion dollars every year. The tourism business is also very important to the economy, with approximately 10 percent of the city’s working workers in one way or another involved in tourism. In 2008, about a little less than three million people came to Jacksonville. .

Jacksonville’s 2010 race ratio:

According to the 2000 census, about 12% of people live below the poverty line. The median income per person was $23,700 (2009).

Riverwalk and Jacksonville Landing

The St. Johns River is the state’s longest running river. It divides the city into several parts. A large number of districts of the city are located in seven main parts:

There are several skyscrapers in Urban Core, but they are all no higher than 200 meters. The tallest building is the Bank of America Tower, 188 meters high and 42 stories high.

Jacksonville Landing

Popular downtown sites include Jacksonville Landing and the Jacksonville Riverwalks. Pery is a glass-steel complex with an orange roof. It is located on the banks of the local river St. John’s. The complex contains shops, restaurants and entertainment areas. Riverwalks are located on both sides of the river, the northern Northbank Riverwalk is three km long, and the southern Southbank Riverwalk is only two km.

One of the largest museums in the city is located near the northern embankment. This is the Jacksonville Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA Jacksonville).

South Embankment in St. Johns River Park contains the Friendship Fountain, which is one of the most famous places for both locals and visitors to the city. In 1965, when the fountain was built, it was considered “the highest and largest fountain in the world.” In 2010-2011, the fountain and the square have changed a lot. The South Embankment boasts one of the city’s most visited museums, the Museum of History and Science (MOSH).

Jacksonville’s Main Street Bridge is one of the most popular parts of the city, crossing the river in the center of the city. This is a bridge, the middle part of which rises thanks to the lifting towers, this is done so that large ships can pass along the river without obstacles. The bridge has four lanes of traffic, as well as sidewalks for pedestrians, which contributes to its popularization in the societies of runners and just those who just like to walk.

American cities have wonderful zoos. The Jacksonville Zoo can also be safely attributed here. Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens has about 2,000 animals and 1,500 rare plants and is rightfully considered one of the city’s biggest prides.

Jacksonville has only one professional sports club that plays in the US major leagues. This is due to the relatively small number of inhabitants. The Jaguars have been Jacksonville’s representatives in the NFL (National Football League) since 1995 and their arena is EverBank Field, which is located in the heart of the city.

Jacksonville (Jacksonville, sometimes in Russian Jacksonville or Jacksonville) is a city located in northeastern Florida. The city is spread over a vast territory of almost 2300 sq. km. This makes Jacksonville the largest city in the continental United States in terms of area, only a few cities in Alaska, due to their vast geographical boundaries, have a large area. The population of Jacksonville is 842 thousand people. More than 1.3 million people live within the Jacksonville metropolitan area. As of the end of 2010, Jacksonville is one of the ten fastest growing cities in the United States.

Jacksonville was named after Andrew Jackson, Governor of Florida and the 7th President of the United States. A popular nickname for the city is Jax.

Jacksonville’s Main Street Bridge is one of the symbols of the city. The fort was later destroyed by the Spaniards, who gained control of the area and eventually, after a short period of British rule, the area was ceded to the United States. By 1859Jacksonville received the status of a city (city) and had the largest port in the state of Florida, through which timber and cotton were transported.

Jacksonville’s location on a navigable river near the Atlantic Ocean has contributed to the growth of the city and the development of industry in the region. The deepwater port is the largest in the South and the second largest on the East Coast of the United States. A balanced and diversified economy is based on manufacturing, finance, insurance, biomedicine, information services, ship repair and handling industries, and tourism. At the same time, the largest employer in the region is the military, which has several large bases nearby. In particular, north of Jacksonville is the huge naval base Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, where a fleet of ballistic missile submarines is based. Just 20 km from downtown at the mouth of the St. Johns River is the important naval base Naval Station Mayport, where the US 4th Fleet is based. It is estimated that the total economic return from the presence of the military in Jacksonville is more than $6 billion annually. Tourism is also an important sector of the economy, with approximately 10% of jobs in the region linked directly or indirectly to tourism. In 2008, more than 2.8 million tourists visited Jacksonville.

The racial makeup of Jacksonville as of 2013 is:

  • White (excluding Hispanics) – 54. 2%
  • African Americans – 30.3%
  • Hispanics – 8.2%
  • Asians – 4.4%
  • mixed race – 2.5%

According to 2013 data, more than 17% of the population live in poverty. Average per capita income $25,521 (2013).

St. Johns River – the longest river in Florida, divides the city into several main areas. Numerous areas of Jacksonville are concentrated in 7 main sectors:

  • Southside
  • Arlington
  • Jacksonville Beaches
  • Urban Core (central part of the city with downtown)
  • Northside
  • Northwest Jacksonville
  • Southwest

There are several skyscrapers in the downtown of Jacksonville, though none of them exceed 200 meters. The tallest 42-story building, the Bank of America Tower, is 188 meters high.

Popular downtown locations include Jacksonville Landing and the waterfront portion of the Jacksonville Riverwalks. Landing is an orange-roofed two-level glass-and-steel complex located on the north bank of the St. Johns River. The complex consists of shops, restaurants and entertainment venues. Riverwalks are located on both banks of the river, the northern embankment of the Northbank Riverwalk is more than 3 km long, the southern Southbank Riverwalk is 2 km.

A few steps from the north waterfront is one of the city’s largest museums – the Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville (Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville), also known as MOCA Jacksonville.

South embankment in St. Johns River Park is one of the most recognizable and popular attractions for locals and tourists in Jacksonville. When at 19In 65, the fountain was built, it was positioned as “the highest and largest fountain in the world.” In 2010-2011, the park and the fountain are seriously modernized. Also on the south waterfront is one of the most visited museums in Jacksonville – the Museum of Science and History (Museum of Science & History or MOSH for short).

Jacksonville’s Main Street Bridge, crossing the river in the heart of downtown, is one of the most recognizable symbols of the city. It is a vertical lift bridge, which means that the entire middle part of the bridge rises on lifting towers in order for tall ships to pass In addition to the four lanes, the bridge has pedestrian sidewalks, making it popular with joggers and walkers.0008

There are excellent zoos in US cities. The Jacksonville Zoo, located north of downtown, was no exception. With 2,000 animals and 1,500 rare plants, the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens is one of the city’s key attractions.

Unlike much of the rest of Florida, the coastline near Jacksonville remains relatively untouched. The sandy beaches of Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach, Jacksonville Beach are conducive to walks and a relaxing holiday. Sport fishing, boating and water sports are also offered.

Adventure Landing is located southwest of downtown Jacksonville. On the Atlantic coast in Jacksonville Beach (Jacksonville Beach) is also the water park Adventure Landing Shipwreck Island.

The region’s relatively small population has meant that Jacksonville has only one professional club based in the nation’s major sports leagues. The Jacksonville Jaguars have represented Jacksonville in the NFL since 1995 years old and perform at the outdoor stadium EverBank Field, located in the city center.

Distances from Jacksonville:

  • Miami – 510 km
  • Orlando – 190 km
  • Atlanta – 480 km
  • Charlotte – 560 km

Winters in Jacksonville are comfortable, with 10-15 nights when temperatures are recorded below freezing. Snow is extremely rare. Like all of Florida, and in fact the entire east of the United States, Jacksonville is threatened by hurricanes.

St.

Augustine

Northeast Florida is considered to be the site of America’s earliest permanent settlements.

St. Augustine was founded in 1565 – 50 years before the first pilgrims arrived in New England. Most of the historic areas have been restored, and tourists have a wonderful opportunity to look into the past.

This is where Ponce de León set foot in Florida in 1513. And half a century later, the Spaniards founded the city of St. Augustine, which witnessed countless battles for Florida between the Spaniards, the French and the British in the next 200 years.

Castillo de San Marcos was built at the end of the 17th century. Withstood several assaults and blockades, she successfully resisted enemy attacks. This is an excellent example of Spanish colonial fortifications from the era of the conquest of the New World.

The Spaniards ceased to strengthen in these places only after 1763, when they ceded the territory to the British in exchange for Havana. After 20 years, the Spaniards returned here through another exchange – returning the Bahamas they had captured to the British. Spain held this region until 1821, when Florida became part of the United States.

Castillo de San Marcos, with its 12-foot-thick and 33-foot-high walls, still stands as a monument to Spanish determination to secure Florida’s coastline for centuries to come. The fortress is the oldest building in the United States, with the exception of Matanzas Bay.

Walk along the narrow cobbled streets among the houses made of shell rock and stone of the 18th and 19th centuries, among the ancient oaks, witnesses of those years, and you will feel the breath of history itself.

Among the preserved historical buildings – a wooden school building and a residential building. The school is the oldest surviving wooden building in St. Augustin. Both the house and the school are over 300 years old!

By the way, you can even look into the old prison, visit the old store, see how a school teacher teaches science to his students.

Many buildings in the old town have their own history.

For example, a plaque on The Dr. Peck House reads: “The stone walls of this building were part of the house that housed the Royal Treasury during the Spanish period. During British rule, the house belonged to Governor John Moultrie.”

In 1837, Dr. Seth S. Peck purchased this building and rebuilt it, keeping the old walls. The house remained the property of the Peck family until 1931 years old when it was donated to the City. A grant from the Flagler Foundation enabled the building to be extensively restored in 1968.

Tourists also visit the Lightner Museum with interest. The building was built in the Spanish style for Henry Flagler in the late 19th century.

Flegler, a railroad tycoon and owner of some of the world’s largest hotels, is associated with many properties on Florida’s east coast. The building of the modern Lightner Museum was originally a hotel (Hotel Alcazar), and now within its walls there is a museum of antiquities, crockery made of carved and blown glass and porcelain, ancient musical instruments.

Another example of a Spanish-style building is The Ponce de Leon Hotel, which was also commissioned by Henry Flagler in 1885-1887. concrete, a mixture of cement, sand and shell rock. The interiors of the Hotel are decorated with stained-glass windows, marble and carved oak panels. Hotel “Ponce de Leon” has become the best among the Flagler hotel system and very popular among celebrities from all over the world. So, for example, several US presidents have repeatedly stayed at this hotel.

During World War II the hotel served as a Coast Guard Training Center. In 1968, the building was converted into Flagler College, which has since housed the Humanities Institute, which has attracted students from all over America.

Spanish Quarter Village restored from a real colonial Spanish village dating back to 1740.

Guides in the clothes of those times invite you on an exciting journey through the past. Visitors can see with their own eyes scenes of the life of the early colonists: how the hostess cooks food on fire, how she manages pots and cauldrons in the kitchen, how a carpenter makes furniture, and a blacksmith forges iron with a huge hammer.

And, of course, you should definitely visit the Fountain of Youth, which was never discovered by Ponce de Leon in 1513. In St. Augustine there is a whole park where a monument is erected to the man who discovered Florida and a fountain of his dreams was built, almost tame peacocks walk near the fountain

Jacksonville

North of St. Augustine is Jacksonville, a modern business and industrial city whose residents love comfort and a high quality of life. Here everything is done for convenience: roads and railways are well equipped, the infrastructure of sea and air communications is highly developed.

Located on the banks of the St. Johns river, Downtown Jacksonville is a blend of business, industrial, government and cultural facilities, including the Convention House, Convention Center, Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens), the Museum of Science and History, the Florida Theater and, of course, the famous Jacksonville Landing.

Jacksonville Landing is probably the most famous place in Jacksonville. In fact, this is a whole complex of hotels, shops, exhibition halls, restaurants, night and sports clubs and other entertainment and cultural facilities.

The collection of the Cummer Museum of Art has an impressive collection of paintings by artists from every era – up to the present day. The fine connoisseur of art will certainly be impressed by the Museum of Modern Art, in the exposition of which you can see works by masters of the 20th century and garden sculpture.

Across the river, directly across from Jacksonville Landing is the Riverwalk. This is a city park about a mile long.

Another picturesque park is River Oaks Park, this is a very calm, quiet place, and here you can wander for hours alone, enjoying the closeness to natural nature.

East of Jacksonville, at the mouth of the St. John “s river, Mayport Naval Station is located – one of the largest US naval bases. A variety of naval ships are based in Mayport, including aircraft carriers, cruisers, destroyers, etc. Many ships are open for excursions on weekends.

For the natives of Jacksonville, the word “Mayport” is not associated with the navy, but quite the opposite – for them it is a cozy, familiar place with a good bite, which can be reached by ferrying from the city.

This part of Mayport has always been and remains a good place for recreation, for fishing, shrimp, trout, sea bass, flounder, etc. are excellently caught here. Going out to the open sea, you can see dolphins and barracudas. Yes, a ferry crossing is also like a little “adventure”.

South of Mayport for 20 miles of the Atlantic coast stretch the magnificent Jacksonville beaches: Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach, Jacksonville Beach. The open ocean attracts here not only lovers of sea swimming and chocolate tanning, but also fans of all types of surfing.

Over the years, Jax Beach has evolved from an ordinary beach into an attractive holiday destination, like the famous beaches of Santa Monica, Santa Cruz. Restaurants, play pavilions, rides (ferris wheel, roller coasters, etc.), beach and bathing accessories shops, bars – all this, of course, makes the rest complete and not boring.

Fort Caroline

Not far from Jacksonville is another memorable place – Fort Caroline, the first French settlement in Florida.

It was first visited in 1562 by the French captain Jean Ribault. Two years later, in 1564, two hundred colonists led by René de Ladonier arrived here and founded the fort, naming it Fort Caroline (la Caroline), after the king of France, Charles IX (Charles IX).

The Spaniards did not tolerate the French presence for long and a year later, 32 miles from the Fort, they built their own settlement of San Agustin (St. Augustine), and then, on September 20, 1565, attacked the French colonists and killed almost everyone. The French retaliated in 1568 by slaughtering the Spanish garrison at the former fort, which the Spanish renamed San Mateo.

Due to the peculiarities of the relief (sand, proximity to the river), alas, nothing remains of the real Fort.

Everything that can be seen in the fort has been restored according to drawings and descriptions of those times. The museum located there introduces tourists to the life and a brief history of the French colony.

It is very likely that if the Spaniards were not so intolerant of their French neighbors, Fort Caroline could be as famous as Jamestown, Plymouth, St. Augustine.
