OUR ROOTS

Young children who go to Empowering Kids Academy get the tools and support they need for their healthy development. All activities are carefully designed to adequately nurture the emotional, intellectual and physical growth of our kids. Through stimulating activities and hands-on learning opportunities, children are free to develop into bright young minds. We ensure the children learn and grow in what we like to call a “yes” space! We form a collective approach to learning and provide a Reggio, Waldorf & Montessori inspired environment.

Empowering Kids Academy is located off 156th and Maple in Omaha, NE. We recently relocated and expanded our in-home childcare program into a small, family orientated childcare & preschool center.

We see the need for high quality childcare that is affordable and flexible. Our goal is to mimic the same personal, hands-on relationships parents seek with an in-home and apply it to a larger space where kiddos have access to an indoor kids gym we call the KIDSCAVE!! Our one of a kind “Zen Space” which houses our beautiful children’s library upon entry. Designated areas specifically designed for children to discover art, sensory and science experiences. Cozy spaces for theater, music, arts, creative expression and yoga. Teachers with Bachelors degrees in ECE for our Preschool and PreK programs. Special visitors that lead various activities such as basketball, soccer, dance, yoga, music, art, cheerleading and much more.

We are a small, family-owned childcare center that values close relationships and community. Our mission is to provide high-quality childcare in a play-based, child-centered philosophy. Our high education and curriculum standards are met through exploration and play. We provide an environment for children to develop a sense of the world around them through inquiry, exploration, interaction and problem solving.  With this model we can foster independence, curiosity and confidence in children. Children have an innate understanding and passion for play, and it is our job to use those opportunities to teach in an environment that naturally and holistically meets them where they are at. We provide more than just childcare. We pride ourself in relationship building, community and most importantly showing genuine love and passion for our kids.

My name is Aspen Kouri, I am so glad you have taken the time to discover my program and all we have to offer here at EKA!  Empowering Kids Academy started in 2017 with the idea of empowering kids to be their best through nurturing, acceptance, love and passion. Our program truly started with the idea of wanting to use my skills, expertise in the field and education to change kids’ life. Four years later, I have proudly accomplished everything I could have imagined plus more!  With my team of dedicated teachers we are empowering kids to the next level by welcoming you to our sense of place where children can freely explore and learn in the environment they deserve. Some refer to us as kids paradise! I promise to be actively involved each and every day with our growth and provide the same care and expectations I would want for my own son. I look forward to connecting and welcoming you to our family!

Contrast enhanced computed tomography features

Computed tomography (CT) is one of the most effective and most accurate methods of modern diagnostics. Unlike conventional radiography, computed tomography allows you to get a three-dimensional image of the area of ​​\u200b\u200bthe body being studied. In this case, the thickness of the cut can be up to 0.5 mm. With CT, the body is visualized in cross sections, which allows you to get 3D images of complex structures. A conventional radiograph is a two-dimensional representation of a three-dimensional structure. It is often difficult to separate overlapping structures on a normal x-ray, such as in the chest, and CT effectively eliminates this problem. In addition, CT is much more sensitive to differences in density and can detect abnormalities not seen on conventional x-rays.

CT scan with contrast is far from being prescribed in every case of using the computed tomography technique. This method of examination is very accurate, allowing you to examine even the smallest tumors, blood clots and hematomas, and is used if it is necessary to detail the picture of the disease.
By injecting a contrast agent intravenously, we answer several questions at once: are there hypo- or hypervascular tumors in the area of ​​interest to us and what are its dimensions,
whether there is necrosis or hemorrhage in it,
whether there are thromboses, aneurysms, vascular invasions,
whether there is a violation of the integrity of the vascular wall, there are no transient disturbances in the perfusion of the organ under study.

CT with contrast is performed in cases where it is necessary to distinguish very clearly between normal and abnormal structures in the human body . This differentiation is achieved by amplifying the signal from diseased tissues. The effect of contrast enhancement in CT is based on the fact that most tumors, especially malignant ones, have a better blood supply than healthy tissues. Therefore, the contrast agent will accumulate in them, giving a picture of difference from other tissues. In addition, contrast is necessary to study the state of blood vessels – veins, arteries. On CT images, the contrast will be highlighted in white, which will allow a good study of this area.

CT with contrast and oncology

In most cases, the procedure is recommended for suspected oncological processes, or for differentiating a benign tumor from a malignant one. Thus, CT with a contrast agent is recommended for:

1. Tumors of parenchymal organs of the abdominal cavity and retroperitoneal space (with kidney cancer, liver, pancreas, spleen carcinoma).
2. Cancer of the hollow organs of the abdominal cavity – intestines, gallbladder.
3. Formations of the chest – lungs, mediastinum, heart.
4. Tumors of the brain and base of the skull.
5. Neoplasms of the musculoskeletal system.

Contrast-enhanced tomography will make it possible to distinguish between a banal and common kidney cyst from renal cell carcinoma or benign lipoma, angioma. When examining the state of the liver, CT will help differentiate between cirrhosis, benign tumors, and hepatocellular carcinoma.

CT with contrast enhancement is used for lymphomas – to distinguish them from another cancer (lymphogranulomatosis) or from simple lymphadenitis. Contrasting will allow you to establish the degree of cancer, its prevalence, damage to regional lymph nodes, the presence of metastases. Often, CT is also prescribed for malignancy of benign tumors, which will be noticeable by a number of specific signs (vascularization, increase in size, etc.).

Contrast-enhanced computed tomography very is informative in the diagnosis of intraluminal thrombi, as well as thrombosed aneurysms, areas of narrowing of the aorta by thrombi. Also, the contrast will allow a detailed study of vascular malformations, including before surgery to remove them. The examination will give a complete picture of the thinning of the walls of the veins, deep vein varicose veins and thrombophlebitis, as well as atherosclerosis of the arteries.

Computed tomography with contrast is used for diseases such areas of the body:

1. Hollow organs – stomach, intestines, esophagus.
2. Lungs, bronchi and trachea.
3. Larynx and vocal cords.
4. Brain, spinal cord.
5. Bases of the skull.
6. All parts of the spine.
7. Bones.
8. Jaws.
9. Nose and sinuses.

Various preparations are used for the procedure – ionic and non-ionic, with iodine content. It is iodine that increases the intensity of the image, while the harm from its penetration into the body is practically absent. The most common are ionic drugs, but non-ionic ones are even more preferred (their toxicity is zero).
Ionic agents include – Metrizoat, Diatrizoate, Ioxaglat,
to non-ionic – Iopromide, Iopamidol, Iohexol and others.

Before the administration of the drug, the doctor must clarify the presence of certain diseases and conditions in the patient, which may become contraindications to the procedure.
Before the examination, the patient must pass a series of laboratory tests
(blood biochemistry: urea (2. 4-6.4 mmol/l) and creatinine (men over 15 years old – 80-150 µmol / l, over 60 years old – 71-115; women over 18 years old – 53-97, over 50 years old – 53-106).
With an increase in these indicators, contrasting is not carried out. The amount of contrast agent is calculated based on the person’s weight.

There are different ways to introduce contrast, the main ones are:

1. Bolus. With the bolus method of administration, a syringe-injector is installed in the cubital or other vein, in which the rate of drug delivery is normalized.
2. Intravenous single dose. The drug is injected into a vein once with a conventional syringe.
3. Oral. In this case, the drug is taken by mouth.
4. Rectal. To scan the intestines, a contrast agent is injected through the rectum once.

Contraindications for CT with contrast agents containing iodine preparations are:

• Severe form of bronchial asthma and diabetes mellitus

• Allergy to contrast agent

• Hyperthyroidism

• Severe renal failure

• Myeloma

Pregnancy is a strict contraindication to any CT scan, because the study involves the use of x-rays. Relative contraindication – breastfeeding: after the procedure, breastfeeding should be excluded for 1-2 days. The tomograph has a patient weight limit, and when performing a CT scan in people weighing more than 110-120 kg, difficulties may arise.

It is generally recommended not to perform the procedure more than once every 6 months. This limitation is not due to the use of contrast, but to the radiation exposure received during CT. However, this burden is minimal, and CT scans may be performed more frequently for health reasons. It should be remembered that a number of patients (1-3%) have pathological reactions to the administration of a contrast agent, which can also limit the frequency of the procedure. These reactions include:

• Swelling of the face

• Shortness of breath

• Rash on the body

• Urticaria

• Skin itching

• Bronchospasm

• Pressure reduction

• Nausea

• Vomiting, etc.

Such reactions are considered signs of an allergy to the contrast agent and require medical attention. Normal are only a slight metallic taste in the mouth, pain in the injection area, a feeling of warmth in the body.

Preparation for contrast-enhanced CT includes:

• Do not eat for 4-8 hours before the procedure (depending on the specific study area)

• Take a drug to reduce gas formation (when examining the digestive tract)

• Come in comfortable, loose clothing

• Remove all metal jewelry, removable medical devices

The patient is placed on the couch, injected with a contrast agent, or a syringe-injector is installed. After a certain period of time, the scanning procedure begins – a person is rolled under the arc of the tomograph and a series of images is taken. The farther the studied organ is located from the heart, the longer it takes the contrast to stain it.

Main differences between contrast-enhanced and non-enhanced CT

When examining hollow organs, conventional native CT without contrast will show them as a homogeneous gray mass without highlighting. If a contrast agent is injected, the walls of the organs will be stained, which will make it possible to consider any diseases of their mucous membrane and muscle layer.

During the study of blood vessels, only the penetration of a contrast agent into them will make it possible to identify blood clots and plaques of atherosclerosis, as well as to detail the boundaries of aneurysms, narrowings and plexuses of blood vessels among themselves. Native CT will not provide such accurate information even when the “vascular mode” is enabled.

When diagnosing cancerous tumors, the differences between the procedure with and without contrast are most pronounced. It is malignant neoplasms that feed on the largest number of vessels, therefore they are painted clearly, brightly, with visible borders. Therefore, often after a native CT scan, on which a tumor is detected, contrast-enhanced CT scan is recommended to clarify the diagnosis.

In general, the differences between procedures are as follows:

1. Contrast-enhanced CT in one examination provides much more information for the doctor.

2. Computed tomography with contrast makes images of individual anatomical zones more detailed and clear.
