Sacramento, USA – travel map

Photo from wikipedia.org [CC-BY-SA-3.0]

Sacramento is a city in the western United States at the confluence of the American River with the Sacramento River, the capital of California and Sacramento County, founded in December 1848 by John Sutter, Jr., the son of an immigrant from Switzerland, who founded the first white settlement in the region.

History

Prior to European colonization, the river valley was inhabited by the Nisenan and Miwok Indian tribes, who were engaged in hunting and gathering. nine0003

In 1799 (according to other sources – 1808) the valley was explored by the Spanish traveler Gabriel Moraga. Fascinated by the beauty and abundance of nature, Moraga exclaimed “Es como el sagrado sacramento!” (These are like holy gifts!), hence the name of the area.

The government of Mexico, which formally belonged to the territory, did not pay any attention to its development. As a result, the first European who founded a settlement here was in 1839 an immigrant from Liestal, John Sutter. The village, originally called simply Sutter’s sawmill, was later called New Helvetia (in honor of the ancient name of Switzerland). nine0003

Sacramento, 1849

During the California Gold Rush of 1849, Sacramento became the center of the mining district. John Sutter’s son, John Sutter, Jr., founded a new settlement nearby in December 1848 for incoming prospectors, naming it Sacramento, after the valley. The new settlement turned out to be noticeably more successful than New Helvetia, which overshadowed relations between the older and younger Sutters. In 1849, a city charter was adopted at a general meeting of townspeople, and on February 27, 1850, it was approved by the California State Legislature. During the 1850s, Sacramento experienced several severe floods, fires, and cholera epidemics. However, due to the favorable location of the city, its population grew rapidly, and by 1860 it exceeded 10,000 people. nine0003

The California Legislature met in various cities across the state, including Sacramento (first time in 1864). Such instability hampered the work of the assembly, and in 1879 it declared Sacramento the permanent capital of the state.

Geography and climate

Geographical information

The city is located in the Sacramento River Valley, at the confluence of the Sacramento and American Rivers, in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. Throughout the history of the city, floods have posed a serious threat to its residents, so a significant part of the land west of the historic center of Sacramento is not built up (due to regular flooding). Suburbs of Sacramento stretch almost 50 kilometers to the east, to the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, and only 6 kilometers to the west. The groundwater level in the valley is quite high and averages 9meters.

City government and politics

City government includes the mayor and the city council. The mayor is elected by citywide vote. The Sacramento City Council is made up of eight members who are elected by the city’s districts (boroughs).

Panoramic view of downtown Sacramento

In the California State Legislature, Sacramento is located in the 6th Senate District, represented by Democrat Darrell Steinberg, and in the 5th, 9th and 10th Assembly Districts, represented by Republican Roger Niello and Democrats Dave Jones and Alyson Huber, respectively. Federally, most of Sacramento is located in California’s 5th congressional district and is represented by Democrat Doris Matsui. Part of Sacramento is located in California’s 3rd congressional district, represented by Republican Dan Langren.

Sacramento USA – what we saw in the capital of California

Hello! Today I want to share with you how we went to the capital of California – Sacramento ( Sacramento ) during our trip to the USA in the spring. We have already passed the California capital once on the way from Lake Tahoe to San Francisco, and this time, following the same route, we decided to stop and get to know the main city of California. And now there is something to share: I will tell you what to see in Sacramento, what sights you must see, whether it is worth going there at all and where to stay in case you like the city. I liked Sacramento so much that I even want to return there on occasion. nineOl000 California Capitol

  • 3 Sacramento – our opinion and feedback
  • 4 Sacramento on the US map
  • Sacramento – the capital of California

Sacramento ( Sacramento ) is the capital and one of the oldest cities in California. It stands at the confluence of two rivers, the Sacramento and the American River. The heart of the city – Old Sacramento – adjoins the river and still tells numerous tourists about the dashing days of the Gold Rush, about which Jack London wrote so vividly.

    Old Sacramento view

    Historic Old Sacramento train station

View of the city from above

    Good to know:

    • Old Sacramento is a recreation of a wooden town from the days of conquering the Wild West, when there was a saloon on every corner and horse-drawn carts raced along the roads.
    • The City of Sacramento is located in the heart of the Land of Gold – Gold Country – in the Sacramento Valley on flat plains at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains.

    Sacramento on the map

    Gold Rush California

    Old brick houses

What to see in the Gold Country:

    • A scenic road from Nevada City to Sonora is laid across the plain with rural landscapes and small historical towns, ghost towns and still inhabited.
    • Route 5 also crosses the plain, around which small farming towns have gathered. The biggest cities like Sacramento, Nevada City or Sutter Creek can serve as a base for traveling through the Land of Gold.

    Getting to Sacramento

Sacramento is in the center of California but not on the coast like Santa Barbara. The city has an international airport.

Route 5, running south to north across the state, connects Sacramento to all cities in California.

Two interstates intersect in Sacramento – US-5 and US-80

Here are the distances to Sacramento and how long it takes:

    • From San Francisco – 90 miles, travel time – 1 hour 40 minutes.
    • From Los Angeles – 390 miles / 6 hours. nine0048
    • From Lake Tahoe – 120 miles / 2.5 hours.
    • From Yosemite National Park – 165 miles / 3.5 hours.
    • From Sequoia National Park – 250 miles / 5 hours.
    • From Redwood Park – 330 miles / 6 hours.
    • From Carmel and Monterey – 190 miles / 3 hours. Don’t forget to drive part of the way along the beautiful 17-mile road with majestic cypresses.
    • From the beginning of the Big Sur track along the Pacific coast – 190 miles / 3 hours.
    • From Las Vegas – 270 miles / 9hours.

    More comfortable transportation

We drove from Tahoe and crossed the Sierra Nevada mountains on Route 80, which was already open in the spring, in contrast to the famous Tioga Pass through Yosemite National Park. On the way, we stopped in Truckee, where you can visit the visitor center and learn a lot about traveling in California, as well as have a bite to eat.

    Good to know:

    • We rented a car for a trip around the USA at the Los Angeles airport. The best price for different classes of cars was viewed on site rentalcars.com
    • Read our article about all the features of car rental in the USA: http://paikea.ru/usa-car-rent-los-angeles/

to devote a lot of time to Sacramento, especially since we also visited Carson City, the capital of Nevada, in the morning. Therefore, I will tell you what you can see in Sacramento in one day for those traveling around America by car.

House in the center of the old city

Also available from San Francisco by Greyhound bus in 2-2.-10. The Sacramento bus station is located in the Southern Pacific area. From there, Downtown can be easily reached by the Green Line tram.

Parking under the highway between the old city and Downtown

    Parking in Sacramento:

    • We left our car in the parking lot of the mall Macy’s where the first three hours are absolutely free, and then every half hour you have to pay 1.5 dollars, that is $3 per hour. It was convenient for us, since Macy’s is not far from both Old Sacramento and the Capitol, which we wanted to visit for sure! nine0048
    • In general, parking in Sacramento is expensive, so think ahead about where to park your car. Check options and prices at bestparking.com
    • But there is also parking under the highway on 3d street. It’s very close to Old Sacramento, and it’s convenient, just pull off Interstate 80 to park right away and go sightseeing in Sacramento.

We left the car at Macy’s and shopped at the same time

    Hotels in Sacramento

After walking around the city and finding out its secrets, I can advise you to look at housing in the Downtown area closer to Old Sacramento or right on the river to feel all the authenticity of Old California. It is a safe area and very close to all attractions. nine0003

I recommend the best hotels in Sacramento in rating:

    1. Hyatt Regency – Best Hotel in the City City
    2. Hampton Inn & Suites 9038 – Good Water
    3. Delta King – Old Sacramento Wharf Steamboat Hotel
    4. Hawthorn Suites – Budget hotel with breakfast and parking in downtown Sacramento
    5. Good Nite Inn – The most budgetary housing option in Sacramento
    6. HI HOSTEL – Popular Relations in Dauntown

Special offers for the best Sacramento hotels on Booking:

    Booking.com

If you are just passing by Sacramento and want, like us, to drop by for half a day in the city center, then it is most convenient to spend the night in chain hotels with a good breakfast, located at the entrances to the city in the direction you need (follow the links with the name of the city you can go to articles with our review of good hotels, if you still decide not to stay in Sacramento, but go further):

    • towards San Francisco on Route 80 – Motel 6 Davis
    • towards Tahoe also on Route 80 – Rodeway Inn Auburn
    • North California on Route 5 – Quality Inn038 Woodland
    • toward Yosemite and Sequoia National Parks on Highways 5 and 99 – Best Western , Comfort Inn

    Transportation in Sacramento

Trams and buses run throughout Sacramento. There are also taxis, but they are expensive. nine0003

    Sacramento Tourist Transportation Scheme

    • You can get around the city using RT Light Rail public transportation. A one-time trip costs $2.5 . Subscription for the day – $7 . See more details on the official website.
    • YoloBus 42B goes to the airport from the city center. It runs every hour, and the journey takes about 20 minutes. The cost is $2.25 .

New buses run around the city

    Sacramento Attractions

Sacramento doesn’t have a lot of famous attractions. And mostly tourists come here for the spirit of the Gold Rush, to the Railroad Museum and to visit the Capitol and other state institutions of Downtown, which can be accessed completely free of charge to anyone.

    Sacramento Attractions

The old town of Old Sacramento is located on the banks of the Sacramento River. From the Tower Bridge, which limits the historical part of the city, Capitol Mall departs, a promenade leading directly to the Capitol. Walk here just one mile. All interesting and beautiful buildings are also located near the Capitol. And if you have the desire and time, you can wander a little and admire the architecture of Sacramento. nine0003

    In the Old City

Old Sacramento – the main tourist attraction of the capital California

What to see in Sacramento must be :

California’s sights – where to go by car

at the entrance to EAGLE Theater

A family business from the depths of time – a jewelry workshop and a store owned by the same family for many generations

Now let’s walk the streets of old Sacramento.

    Old Sacramento

Old Sacramento ( Old Sacramento ) is six blocks of historic buildings with shops, restaurants and museums, which are located between the river and the modern city. Some buildings in Old Sacramento were still in use by gold miners in 1849 during the gold rush, although most of the buildings date from the 60s and 70s of the 19th century. It was at this time that Sacramento became the link between the wealthy cities of the California coast and the rural towns of the plains. nine0003

    Delta King Steamboat Hotel

The Pony Express stopped in Sacramento and had a station for transcontinental trains, and San Francisco was accessible by river by steamboat. Delta King Riverboat , the last paddle-wheel steamboat, as we saw in Savannah in Georgia and Lake Tahoe, still stands at the wharf. From 1927 until today it has been a 3 star hotel and restaurant. You can live there for about $140 a day (link).

    Tower Bridge in Sacramento

We entered Old Sacramento from the Tower Bridge. The first place we saw was Joe’s Crab Shack . We are vegetarians but came in out of curiosity. Satisfied diners were already sitting there. Overall, this restaurant has a good rating.

In Joe’s restaurant you can not only eat crabs, but also buy souvenirs

On the opposite bank in West Sacramento stands a golden step pyramid The Ziggurat , built at the end of the 20th century in such a way as to recall Mesopotamian ziggurats and the days of the gold rush, as I understand. This building is now occupied by the California Department of General Affairs. Basically, it deals with business issues. nine0003

    Sacramento Pyramid

Nearby is a 19th century school with just one room. Just imagine! All students in the same class!

The school building is about the same as we saw in the Great Smoky Mountains, but larger than in the Fruita Valley in Capitol Reef in Utah

You can ride through Sacramento on a horse-drawn settler cart (the same Wagon Wheels). The price is from $15 to $60, depending on the duration of the trip and the route.

To feel like a migrant from the Gold Rush, you can ride a wagon

The old depot and steam locomotives attract children and those who are interested in this mode of transport.

Immediately behind the depot are museums – Sacramento History Museum , where you can learn about the history of the region, and California State Railroad Museum with old locomotives and trains.

    Union Pacific

    Old locomotive

And here is the museum building

    Brick house with metal balconies

We went for a walk further towards the visitor center. It turned out that it is not as rich as other information centers where we have been before. However, there is an old wagon inside! nine0003

Well, our walk through Old Sacramento is over and we’re heading down the easy walkway down the highway towards town.

Nearly all homes are restaurants or shops

    California State Capitol

California State Capitol ( California State Capitol ) is the seat of government for the State of California. When Arnold Schwarzenegger, known to us as simply the Terminator, was the governor of California, he worked here. The neoclassical building was built between 1861 and 1874. nine0003

The Capitol is 1 mile from the Tower Bridge. It is open from 7:30 a.m. (weekdays) and from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily. Admission is free from N Street. You cannot carry bags wider than 35 cm and 32 in height. Official website – capitolmuseum.ca.gov

The Capitol Moll starts from the Tower Bridge

The Capitol stands in the middle of a large landscaped park and was built by 1874 in the Greek Renaissance style with a Corinthian portico and a large golden central dome, at the top which flaunts a copper ball. Very similar to the Capitol in Washington. nine0003

The building has been restored several times (last time in 1970).

The Capitol is surrounded by a park with palm trees

The figures on the roof as in antiquity

The path leads through the garden of tropical trees

The Capitol looks magical. A very airy white building, which can be admired as well as antique buildings left after Ancient Greece or Rome or the best architectural masterpieces of Europe.

Also, the Capitol is a museum of the political and cultural history of the State of California. nine0003

We go through the huge doors. By the way, there are several entrances to the Capitol. Tourists are allowed in through the south entrance. There they inspect how at the airport

It is worth visiting and State Senate Chamber , where important voting takes place and a portrait of George Washington hangs. The chamber is located to the right of the entrance. Unfortunately, we didn’t get there because the place was closed.

See the magnificent dome of the Capitol in our video:

You can take a free tour of the Capitol, which starts approximately every hour at its entrance. But we like to walk alone, so we wandered around the majestic building on our own. nine0003

This is one of the largest Capitols we have seen. In addition to the capital, it can also be compared to the City Hall in San Francisco. But our beloved Capitol in Austin, the capital of Texas, is similar in appearance, but made of a different stone.

Palm trees and magnolias grow around the building, and in general the territory near the government building resembles a blooming garden. This, of course, is unexpected.

Sacramento – our opinion and review

After visiting Sacramento, we decided that we had not lost time in vain. Not to say that Sacramento is a very popular city with tourists, but a large Russian community lives here. Many speak Russian, as in New York.

While traveling across the USA, we made a special trip to the state capitals to visit various Capitols, so we couldn’t bypass Sacramento, the capital of California! nine0003

    Street in Downtown Sacramento

Personally, I liked Sacramento. The city center is well-groomed, there are many trees, you can hide from the sun just in the shade of their crowns or next to tall buildings. And since Sacramento is located in a very hot valley, it is almost always warm here (not like in Chicago or Philadelphia).

Of course, the city is not without problems. Like San Francisco, Miami, and Los Angeles (especially Venice Beach and Hollywood!) there are a lot of homeless people on the streets.

Mounted police keep order in the city

As a result, I would advise everyone who is interested in the history of California and read Jack London to go to Sacramento to see with their own eyes in what conditions and in what atmosphere the desperate people who hunted for gold lived.
